Last week, the Armenian Prime Minister announced that it has frozen its participation in the CSTO, accessing Russia of failing to fulfil its security obligations, and realigning itself to the West, particularly with France. In this video, we explain why Armenia has fallen out with Russia, what's France got to do with it, and how it fits into a wider regional realignment.

@@TheOmegaXicor In Armenia my ass, the main ruckus before this dumbass proxy war in Ukraine was about Armenians rebelling within Azerbaijan, that's not CSTO business, and Russia still bent over backwards to keep the situation stable, the contested area guarded by peacekeepers and borders stayed exactly the same until Armenia *explicitly and clearly* surrendered it, which is the actual topic at hand they're somehow trying to spin into Russia abandoning Armenia.
Armenia has been flirting with NATO for years, Armenia gave up the land, the CSTO definitely cannot intervene in this even if you spun the law worse than a yankee, Russia has not only no legal basis to intervene but also no interest or gain.
Russia intervening would mean a military invasion of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the latter being a damn NATO/israeli asset no less.
These psyops haven been bottom of the barrel since the arab spring and whoever believes the PR spins is either naive or treating geopolitics as a football match.
Armenia: “ bro they are invading please send some help we have a defensive alliance.”
Russia: “ you have reach the inbox of Russia to deliver a message please wait until the beep”
What? Armenia was not invaded!
It was and still is
Karabakh was invaded and it's not officially part of Armenia and Armenia didn't recognize it as a part of itself. So why the heck Russia should send it's soldiers to die instead of Armenian ones?
This is accurate. Russia simply has no ability to respond at the moment.
Russian peace-keeping in Nagorno Karabakh was based on the ability of Russian paratroopers and other mobile troops to drop into the territory. Russian peace-keepers were there just to be a tripwire.
But all meaningful Russian force has long since been pulled out of the Russian bases in Armenia and other near-abroad (e.g. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, etc) and re-allocated to Ukraine. But even more importantly, those Russian paratroopers who were the implicit threat in Russian peace-keeping - they are also fully deployed (and many cases destroyed) in Ukraine.
So Azerbaijan had nothing to fear from Russia. So it took the opportunity to end the Nagorno Karabakh saga while it could. And now, after more than 30 years, it is over.
So this has nothing to do with Russian desire to help, and everything to do with Russian inability to help. But from Armenia's standpoint, it doesn't matter - at the end of the day, they were abandoned by Russia.
Parts of Armenia are occupied by azerbaijan right now, and have been so since 2022. Not Nagorno Karabakh but Armenia itself, so Russia had to act and failed to do anything.
armenia has had a difficult history, I really hope for peace and prosperity for the nation and its people

@@FS-eh4dj For the most part, the Byzantines and Armenians got along actually. There were several emperors of Armenian origin in Constantinople, plenty generals, and most imperial provinces had sizeable Armenian minority populations. Armenia itself was a massive battleground between the Byzantines and Persia, so that made their position between the two extremely difficult. Also why Armenian culture is so similar to both. The fact that they eventually were surrounded and subjugated by various hostile Muslim polities made their position far worse. Unfortunately that’s the problem they still face. Armenians were butchering local Turks+Kurds and other minorities(Christians and Jews) in the western part of Turkey during Ottoman and Russia war bcz they got instruction to rise against Ottomans. Instruction was given by the Russian Orthodox church. They were also supported by French and other western powers.
In the east part of Turkey there is a saying amongst people when they want to keep their kids quite "Ssssshs Armenian is coming" or "Son of Armenian b..."
These are the real life teaching not from bias western historical claim.

Actually the bond goes back to Cilician Armenia, where French was the second language for the nobility as was Italian for the common people of the Kingdom. First contact was established in the 12th century between the two kingdoms and when later the modern nations formed it did not take long for them to establish strong diplomatic relations.
The bond between France and Armenia is much older than the 1915, it has started since the French kingdom of Lusignans haas settled in the island of Cyprus and where both Armenian aristocracies, mostly the daughters of kings married with French king of the dinasty in the 12 th century where the French King Lusignan ruled and was crowned a king of Cyprus, Armenia( Cilicia) and Jerusalem, there is even a chapel in North Cyprus that has survived for little and on it's wall is written= for the bond and Friendship of French and Armenian nations... Armenians have lots of sympathy for French people, for their culture, and many other things, we Armenians are always attracted to the deep values of a certain nation, their art, their way of being and their culture and French people have it it all in those terms!!! ❤

Hi. I am French, and I live in a town called Valence (in the Drôme region, in the South East). My region recent history and political life is profoundly shaped by the armenian community. We estimate that around 33% of the population has at least one armenian ancester in recent history.
The armenians came after the genocide, and came to our region as we had industries and craftmanship in Shoemaking, Hatmaking and overall leatherwroking, which they shared.
I've grown up with Armenian friends, armenian food is very common in the city, our jewellers and leatherworkers are armenian. Some armenian flags are hung to different places of the city, and you might even see the Nagorno Karabagh flag.
The armenian genocide is also a living memory, and multiple monuments honoured those who died. We have a museum dedicated to armenian culture in the city.
Our specific region is a great example of an already long lasting cultural relation between France and Armenia. In Lyon, Marseille or Valence (all along the Rhône river), a lot of armenians came after the French intervention in Turkey during the first world war, during which France brought as much civilians as possible in French. They arrived in Mediterranean ports and settled. Armenian genocide is studied in French classes, and overall, Armenians are perceived as one of the very well integrated and positive immigrant communities in the country.
France was a long ally of armenia, and the United States were as well. We did not steal an ally of Putin. The cultural relations that we have are just becoming more political since Armenia's independence, and the increasing needs of Armenia to form bons in security and economy - need that became even bigger as the recent event with Azerbaidjan showed + Russia is unable to support Armenia rn.
Russia wants peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan (both were part of the USSR). And speaking in a military conflict on the side of Armenia, for territory that does not belong to them, does not look like a peaceful settlement between 2 states. Russia has influence on both states and can keep the peace. But it looks like Armenia wants to commit suicide.
Russia has kept the peace just fine these last 4 years hasn’t it?
Russia doesnt want peace between armenia and azerbaijan. If they did they would have applied a significantly better effort to achieve that, but they didn't. Russia's policy consists of keeping the conflict low intensity and avoiding both an escalation and the search for a permanent solution. They do the exact same thing in Moldova with Transnistria, Ukraine with Donbass (up to 2022), Georgia with South ossetia and Abkhazia, and even to some extent Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The reason they do this is to control keep these countries weak and vulnerable and either reliant on Russia or unable to escape Russia's orbit. Its just a 21st century divide and conquer. @teongrey91

Armenia aligning with France, and given Greece aligns more with France, it seems a mini military alliance is forming around Turkey.
France is salty because they lost Libya to Turkey despite support from Russia, UAE, KSA, Egypt, and politically Greece. And Turkey is rapidly gaining influence and power in Africa disturbing France's ability to freely exploit North and Central Africa. But France selling their old weapons to Armenia or Greece isn't much of a threat or alliance.
France doesn't have the power, forces or political will to actually confront Turkey or start a war. For Turkey meanwhile, it's an issue of survival. Their weapons aren't a real threat other than maybe the Rafaelle they sold to Greece, but then the f35 are a far bigger threat. More over, Turkey's defense industry is advancing at such a pace, it's unsustainable for Greece to try and keep up when they are in massive debt already and going into more debt to spend billions on new weapon systems that will be old news by the time they get them. France is also notoriously unreliable as a weapons supplier, which is why so many developed countries canceled their orders with them recently (e.g. they got very upset over canada canceling their submarine contract and buying American ones instead).
Greece bought 4.5 gen Rafaelle. Turkey inveiled a 5th gen fighter and had its maiden flight. Turkey a giant army of sophisticated drones. A well trained and battle tested, experienced army, the second largest in NATO etc etc. All France is doing is lashing out because of their failures in Africa. *More importantly you have to realize, just 4 or 5 years ago this anti Turkey alliance consisted of Russia, Gulf States (except Qatar), Egypt, Greece, Armenia, Israel. They tried everything from proxy wars to trying to force pipelines through Turkish waters. Nothing worked, they left one by one and made good with Turkey. Even Israel and Turkey made up. This is also monitored in India. Armenia is small, but its tie with Russia is symbolic for many reasons. Armenia has a deep connection to Russia since the 19th century, and it was the only people in the Caucasus to welcome Russian arrival. This made Armenia the master on relationship with Russia compared to India. I think it is not just humiliating to watch for many Indians (including me, a half-Indian), but this revealed Russia's true face. With India facing China and Pakistan, I doubt India can trust Russia to do something in our favours. Russia had forced India to pay for its products on Chinese currency a year ago and I don't think Indians can forget it.
Your Indian half definitely doesn't think like most Indians. I wonder what is your other half lol. India doesn't have such deep ties with Armenia AFAIK.
Russia also allowed you to pay with UAE Dirham. If only your own currency is good for something, so Russia don't have to jump through another hoop just to get paid.
India is a powerful country and is militarily power is growing fast. Russia is a foe, on the bridge to became China puppet as it exhausts itself in a war it can’t win on the long term.
One of the U.S. biggest strategic mistakes was alienating India by partnering with Pakistan (Idiot Reagan). Pakistan has proven to be a very unreliable partner. Finding Bin Laden in Pakistan has irreparably deteriorated relations between the two countries. And because US partnered with Pakistan, India has drifted towards Russia, despite having values (free market democracy) closer to that of "the west".

France has ties with Armenia since the 1st crusade, and this special relation is deeper since the Armenian genocide of Turkey, many Armenians took refuge in France.
I'd say it's natural that Armenia look toward Europe when Russia fails to protect and respect its defense agreement. And it's natural that Armenia speaks to France first.
It will hit India and Vietnam hard. Armenia is symbolic because it was Russia’s best ally for a long time, and Armenia enjoyed many privileges not even India and Vietnam could have on relations with Russia. I got reports that Armenia’s tragic situation is being strongly monitored by Indian officials and a lot of officials in Vietnam are shocked as well.

Poor Vlad, he has no friends anymore!
I read Psalm 21:11 as a prayer for Armenia; "Though they plot evil against you, and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed".
France is Armenia's best friend. They were the first country to recognize the genocide. You can say "Merci" in Armenia instead of their thank you because its too hard for foreigners to say. They have always been good allies
Actually it was Uruguay, not France
As an armenian, i can 100% confirm, we just tell people to say „merci“ 🗣️🗣️
Ik they’re preoccupied but I’d love to see the US get much closer to Armenia. If it’s able to protect it - it is in such a strategic position. The US also has many Armenians with Glendale California being a ‘little’ Armenia
Russia is not a real ally of Armenia. And I am not taking why Russia didn't provide weapons to Armenia in "Theird Nagorno karbakh war" because Russia is dealing with the war in Ukraine, but before even Armenia is a member of "Common Security Treaty Organization" like an Russian "NATO" and they didn't provide weapons to Armenia before and in the "Second Nagorno karbakh war".
Also Nagorno Karabakh is not legally part of Armenia as like if someone attacked/liberated an area that was occupied by the nation in NATO without directly attacking them on their soil, would that make NATO to jump in or let their member do by themselves?

And NATO would not have much grounds to criticize Russia over any actions in NK since they themselves were more than happy to intervene and attack another country during the Kosovo war

Great analysis. Thank you :)
I don't get it. If Azerbaidjan/Nagorno Karabakh is not in CSTO, why would then Russia had to intervene? The war was not on armenian soil, and it was not Armenia as an CSTO member that was attacked. Someone explain pls???
Azerbaijan currently occupies part of Armenia, CSTO was called when Azerbaijan invaded Armenia proper and Russia failed to do so.

Good for Armenia. Russia betrayed Armenia every time when azerbaijan attacked to Armenians. As soon as Russia was giving weapons to Armenia, Putin was giving more to azerbaijan and therefore Armenia was always being defeated. France on the other side has more respect for Armenians, and has offered to help in many difficulties.

You forgot to mention that while Pashinyan was in Paris he was invited to attend Macron putting an Armenian who fought in the French WW2 resistance into the Pantheon, adding an emotional connection between the two countries.
Not strange that members in the CSTO tries to find alternative security arrangements since Russia often discuss invading them if they do not please the "overlords".
If you look at a map, France is rather far away. The one strong neighbouring country is Turkey. Unfortunately, there was that little genocide the Turks tried on the Armenians around 1915 which drove them to seek help from Russia.
So, Armenia (3m people) has former enemy Turkey (85m) to the west and open hostile Azerbaijan (10m) to the east. South there is Iran and North there is Georgia (3m), which is partially under Russian occupation. Talking about between a rock and a hard place.
Armenians also did genocide on Turks. So it's mutual
Excellent video.

Armenia should eventually puruse EU membership along with Georgia. Together they would offer EU greater foothold in Caucasus.
Culturally and politically rhese countries are more European
What about giving Azerbaijan Nato membership, Armenia is not happy with it but it would be a nightmare for Russia and Iran on their backyard
@@jeryndavelauan2453 Azerbaijan in NATO is not just a nightmare, it's a checkmate, that's why everyone including Turkey, Russia, Iran, Saudi, Israel are catering to Azerbaijan and doing whatever they want, it's not just strategically important, but a country with a lot of natural resources and a huge ethnic group within Iran that has a strong desire to join Azerbaijan and can be easily integrated in their population. That's why it's in Azeri interest to stay neutral and be like a Switzerland of the east rather than a NATO base. If macron was as good on internal policy as foreign policy france would be a utopia. Hes actually playing 6d geopolitical chess all the time
you don't seem to understand how french system is working. The major role of the president is to represent France abroad and the president is the chief of the three armies. He has only a very limited indirect power to internal affair (he just choose the prime minister that's all). Your comment is foolish
While that may be true, macron is clearly the main voice on the domestic stage too as he practically controls his party@@julienriou4511
@@julienriou4511 True, however he is the face of the government non the less and when his government does not so great internal politics, well that rubs off on Macron non the less. So in the end it becomes Macrons problem no matter if that is right or wrong and Macron has to fix it, or he will be outed no matter if it's his fault or not. So no in reality the comment did actually make sense, because politics isn't about who is responsible for what, but about who is seen as responsible for what.
Whether it's Russia or France, Armenia is playing a losing game against Azerbaijan. The chance to negotiate a favorable peace treaty was lost in the late '90s due to hubris. Furthermore, the only country with which they have a modicum of shared strategic interests is Iran. France will profit from the relation, try to assuage the Armenian diaspora, and extend its influence as much as it can. However, France will not intervene directly in support of Armenia, given its military inferiority and geographical isolation. Armenia is mostly on its own.
military inferiority compared to whom ? Azerbaidjan ? 😂
@@St0rrrm Also how can France able to help Armenia if Armenia is surrounded by two enemy nations, one nation who didn't dare cross out with Russia and another nation who hate France?
I was looking for this comment. Azerbaijan has more soldiers, more money, a bigger population, and a strong alliance with their neighbor. Armenia doesn’t. In case of further war, Armenia is in a tough position. France will never intervene on their behalf and Russia has proven unreliable as a partner. Unless they can somehow find peace with their neighbors, I sadly don’t see what they can do.

This is not accurate, Armenia has politically moved away from Russia for close to a decade now, this is why they lost Nagorno Karabakh, as Russia decided to not safeguard Armenia anymore and left it completely open for Azerbaijan with support from Turkey too invade. Armenian politicians have utterly failed its people by this shift of diplomatic focus.
This is especially true as the west including France, are not and cannot not do a single thing to support Armenia, which Russia could.

Phasing out the use of Cyrillic, signing uranium deals with France to help Europe bypass russian gas.Kygyzstan cancelled CSTo training excercises, Kazakhstan is the only central asian country allowing mir card payments ( and only for private individuals) central asian workers are increasingly chosing to go to the Turkic sphere nations and china than russia. @davidcooks2379 Eh historically the Armenians held large swathes of land in the middle East. especially prior to Muslim Arab invasions
The problem for Armenia is that the west and France in particular has very little influence in Caucasus. Their only access in the region is through NATO member Turkey, which is an enemy of Armenia. At the same time European Union has a strategic energy partnership with Azerbaijan and this explains why they did not react more dynamically to the ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh. Propably the best regional partner for armenia is Iran, that has always supported Armenias national aspirations since the late 19th century and also has a problem with their Azerbaijani minority.

Thats not true this countries refuse to continue work with France and Russia just using the opportunity
I feel like you missed an important detail here, which is the reason why it's France that Armenia is getting close to rather than the US. They need a Western ally since Russia is useless, but they need someone Iran won't object to too much since they're Armenia's only real ally and a vital trade corridor. France is the only Western country with a serious military that won't piss off the Iranians, and thus they're really the only option. Ultimately they want to get India in there as well but that's not the topic of this video.
