I got the back cover and NVMe adapter, and its not bad but has one major shortcoming in my opinion and that is that the NVMe bay is not heatsink friendly to say the least, which given the fact that the LLG performs best with PCIe 4.0 x4 drives, and half decent ones run hot, it could do with a rework. I tried my spare Samsung 980 Pro with heat sink and I was expecting the cover not to fit and had some long thin screws to sort that, but it wont fit in the bay at all as its to wide. I ended up screwing it in to the raised back of the bay with some thermal pads underneath in the bay just to give it a level fitting. It now sits exposed but looks fine, and is on there rock solid. It has a nice performance boost as well compared to the original and 2TB upgraded one I had in there as it performs around 50+% faster and is very noticeable on some games like BG3 where the experience is smoother. it does heat up a fair bit and does get hot, but not hot enough to burn, more like holding a hot coffee cup type hot. Its not an ideal solution, but until a third party option comes along that lets me have it in a bay properly, its staying as is as the performance increase is worth it, plus its on there solid and nothing really is exposed as the drive is completely wrapped in the heatsink and the connector is covered. Its also got the advantage of being able to be actively cooled when being used docked as with a USB fan on it, it runs perfectly cool (I'm running the 3DMark storage test on it as I type this and its perfectly cool with the fan on it). I cut up an old 200mm fan dust filter and covered all the vents as well to complete the package, and while its not ideal, I am satisfied as its feeling like an upgrade to me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. The 980 Pro runs a bit hot from what I know, given its high read/write speeds. It also depends on the controller type.
If I can suggest putting just a tiniest bit of thermal paste between the processor and the pad before you put the heat sink around the SSD, you'll have better heat dissipation. I know it sounds strange but if you try it, I know that you'll see different results.
It looks like the back cover has thermal pads to connect to different parts of the Go, so it is used for cooling. That's probably why we haven't seen more official 3rd party mods like you get with the Steam deck, as they would need to replicate or have a substitute for that to not get overheating issues. My guess is a 2280 SSD with a heat sink would solve the SSD issue, but something else would be needed for the rest.
Sure, if you are going to add a 2280 external SSD, this cover is the best option, but for any SSD that will go underneath it, it will be worse. I mean, the vents for the 2242 and 2230 are useless, plus it doesn't look very nice IMHO 😆 I feel downgrade
This isn't surprising at all. More holes intakes or outakes doesn't means better airflow, it means less air moving per holes so the air is moving slower inside the device which is probably not a good thing. the size, position and number of holes was probably calculated in accordance with the fan's capacity. your are indeed disturbing the intended airflow and dissipation surfaces areas. The engineers probably know what they're doing, and if they've decided not to add more holes, it's probably for a good reason.
The Legion Go has really good cooling for the APU. A single fan is able to cool it quite well. However, things aren't going so well for the SSD. I've constantly seen my mine showing critically high temperatures, especially when I install games. Of course, if you use a 2280 drive on this modded one, it's going to be super cool with a heatsink, but there are many users out there who prefer using the one that the Go comes with, a 2242, and using this mod cover with it's extra holes will worsen it for them

Thanks. I only got it because it’s important for others to know what they’re buying, especially since AliExpress stuff isn’t easily returnable. If you have a 2280 SSD with a heatsink, go for it as it has a hole for the adapter to go in externally, but for other size formats (2230, 2242), it would be terrible. Even I’m using a heatsink and the stock SSD for the Legion Go, which doesn’t have the highest read/write speed. If I use my 2230 WD Black SN770m, it will likely fry itself. Poking holes in the SSD area is definitely not enough; I’m not claiming to be a thermal engineer, but I believe that plastic isn’t thermally conductive like the metal used on the original. Even the thermal image shows how the original has heat spread over a wider area, while the PETG on the 3D mod cover used is just showing a very hot spot and the surrounding area is unaffected.
You should re check before and after with nvme temps. Also really is designed for use with a 2280. I use a 2280 + a heatisnk. My max nvme temps are 40c and my average nvme temp while gaming is in the mid 30s. Also my cpu temps during all these test way lower also. Your numbers don’t align with mine so somethings off or your just not optimized as well as you could be
I didn't use a 2280, just the 2242 that comes with the Legion Go and a heatsink. Yes, it makes more sense if you use this mod with a 2280 drive, but with 2230 or 2242, it has worsened SSD temperatures much more than they're already on mine. For CPU & GPU, it improved by about 2-4 degrees. It has some downsides. First, the fan gets dusty much faster. A mesh filter is an option, but then it might reduce its cooling. We are back to square one, but cleaning frequently solves it. I think my results make sense. I repeated it three times. The original back cover has an internal metallic coating. I think it may transfer heat from the SSD hotspot more than a 3D printed plastic one. In your case, having a 2280 drive makes it a good mod, especially having a heatsink and all, but for 2230 and 2242 drives that go inside, it will get worse. Please check it to confirm this. I'll try it with a 2280 NVMe, sure it will be good. I also was interested in trying it with the 2242 that comes with the Legion Go, thinking I was improving it by having those extra air vents, but actually, it's not better at all. Our results don't align because we have different drive placements.
Something is wrong with your SSD. I have the older revision of this back panel and my stock SSD tops out at 64c after downloading 125gb game using gigabyte Ethernet
to ensure that the mesh isn't decreasing the airflow, It's better to add mesh because holes are quite big but adding a mesh before testing may change the result
That's what I thought. A waste of money and time. Lenovo spent a lot of time designing this thing. if it was just as easy as poking a million holes in the back they would've done that and moved on.
It's good if you have the 2280 SSD mounted along with a heatsink. I'll try it out later on. I got an SSD, especially for it, along with the adapter, but for anyone that is going to use a 2242 or 2230 NVMe, it's really going to worsen it. Those air holes aren't going to do any good. Plus, if you don't apply a dust filter on top, the fan will get way more dust and you will just need to clean it frequently. Maybe you noticed, but the fan gets dusty quite fast. I cleaned mine three times since I got it in November. I appreciate the work done on this mod, but if we want to address the internal SSD temperature, it would take more than just poking some holes like you said. The first thing is having some passive cooling, so you will need thermal engineering going on. I believe third-party companies like JSAUX and HandheldDIY could make it like they did for the Ally,it works well.
he uses the backplate wrong...this backplate is not designed for original 2242 SSD but for 2280 SSD which should be put to the slot in the middle of the back plate in the back...this whole video is useless
But whoever made this cover has included some airflow holes for the internal SSD at the bottom, many would assume that more airflow generally may also improve internal SSD temperature, but it just worsens it. sure putting any SSD externally will be good. I'm just pointing out that this cover mod may be bad if u want to put ur SSD in its original position.
STAPM by design is a thermal target. You can’t compare temperature with STAPM applied. Move the SSD to the position the backplate is designed for, turn off STAPM, and rerun the tests. This is a hack job of a review lol

Onestamente, non credo che sia un buon aggiornamento a meno che tu non abbia un NVMe 2280 da montare, altrimenti potrebbe peggiorare le temperature del drive 2230, 2242 all'interno. Inoltre, la ventola raccoglierà più polvere dati i fori d'aria più grandi, quindi dovrai pulirla più spesso oppure installare un filtro antipolvere. La somma che più buchi non significa Wow, i materiali misti all'interno usati in quello originale possono condurre calore meglio del materiale di stampa 3D PETG. Se hai drive 2280, non è male anche la temperatura della CPU, GPU secondo poco 2-4 °C. Ma lo trovo esteticamente brutto rispetto all'originale, lol il Go sembra un giocattolo con questa cover 😄

Do you mean to put some thermal paste on top of the installed pad on the Z1 Extreme?
