    Couple of people were asking RE the Raptor and why it was replaced. It developed a driveline whine just after we did the towing test with the trailer dyne. We gave Ford the option of replacing the vehicle if they could get the replacement to us by that afternoon - I'll reply to this comment with the diagnosis for what was wrong (we didn't get this until after filming).
    This wasn't mentioned on the video, but the GWM was also delivered without a brake controller, we gave GWM the option of installing one in time for the next day and they turned it around in time for us to do the tow testing. And it was already mentioned in the video that the SsangYong had an engine light visible, which was due to an O2 sensor and we were told it wouldn't affect performance.

    One thing this test has exposed is frankly how misleading the "3500kg" tow ratings are on many of these utes. The fact that so many of them can only just barely crack 90km/h with the trailer dyne hooked up and active, and struggle with the 2500kg trailer up a mild grade is concerning at best.

    • @CarExpertAus
      @CarExpertAus  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think I mention in the video somewhere that a number of the utes would struggle if they were at payload towing max capacity. Tow ratings can be quite misleading.

    This is honestly the most comprehensive test I've ever watched I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love how you combined both scientific testing with the trailer dyno and subjective testing with the trailer pull test.
    Also no other tests have ever just such a variety of vechile what's shocking is the petrols outperformed all of the desiels! People have been up in arms about the ranger raptor being petrol and it destroyed the competition even with off road tyres.
    The proof in the pudding is that even the jeep Gladiator which is the least tow capable vehicle on paper (NA petrol, low torque, mud tyres) and it still out performed the 4 cycle diesels.
    I think the wildtrack shows that HP is also important for towing not just low end torque.
    My only question mark is your girl economy results from the trailer or the 0-100 as no one tows at full throttle. Also the petrols are getting a better time as a result of using more fuel. So a seperate fuel economy test would be better.

    Amazing review, Paul! Love how you really put vehicles through their proper paces. Once thing to note, in reference to the Ram versus Silverado, I noticed the Ram only had 6715 km's on the clock, whereas the Silverado had 21,288 km's, which probably accounts for some of the niggles you may have had and I hope you took that into account. I may live in Australia, but I'm an American, and As a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy man, I may be a bit biased, but oh well...

    hi guys, with the cannon, it needs to be in sports mode when using cruise controll for towing. in sports mode it will hold speed well while towing. i towed a caravan around australia with it. it is programmed to only apply a set level of throttle depending on what mode you have it in, so when its in sports mode it will apply much more throttle and hold the speed well. It didnt miss a beat the whole trip, we also vlogged the whole trip on our channel. great content by the way, i enjoy watching these tests.

      Its amazing how many people miss this detail - pretty poor effort from Paul on that, easy to do some research. I 've had no issues in sport mode towing 2T with 5 on board, it was better than my 150 Prado.

    • @CarExpertAus
      @CarExpertAus  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully GWM will integrate a tow mode - a Sport mode is designed to hold gears for performance, a tow mode will select gears for economy and engine load. The cruise control shouldn’t drop down to 40km/h before it dials back gears - that will hopefully be a simple software change. How did you find the ride on your road trip?

    • @griffinsgetaway
      @griffinsgetaway ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @CarExpert yeh I totally agree it should have a tow mode, but sports mode does work well enough for towing in my experience so I just use that. Obviously the ride quality is not perfect, but when you consider the price point they are in, i think they perform all around quite well. Fuel economy is really good when towing too!

    • @griffinsgetaway
      @griffinsgetaway ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @CarExpert I'm thinking it would be cool to do like a performance vs cost ratio or something like that in your tests. If you can come up with a way to quantify that.

      @@CarExpertAus Was such a good job was easy to sit thought it all, in fact went though parts again. Ill admit the conclusion caught me a bit of guard. Like the ending of 6 sense. After seeing how many of those UTEs cant get to a 100, really struggling to actually, well, pull their weight, I thought best tow truck would be the wildtrack. Looked and sounded like it handled it pretty effortless and the fuel consumption kinda backs it up, it was practically the lightest on fuel if you exclude the trucks that couldn't get to a 100. Well actually it was just behind the BT50 where others like the raptor used more than 30% fuel (Quick guess I didnt calculate) and was pretty noisy. At todays fuel prices (Diesel and Petrol) that extra 30% or more for the other big trucks is a ton of money. Anyway again great vid. I really enjoyed it. Shared it with heaps of others that is looking to buy a UTE soon.

    we tow a 3000kg trailer/caravan with a ram 1500(hemi/8speed/4wd) on an 8000 km annual trip here in canada. the trip is a mix of freeway driving and 2 lane blacktop. we do use a load equalizing hitch and sway control, both are very important especially at 100 km/h on a freeway.
    maximum grade we have ever seen was 18% up and down, the ram accelerated from 50 to 90 km/h up that grade, no braking required on the downhill side, just a manual downshift on the steepest section

    Thanks Paul. That was a great towing test video. Can you do one with large 4WD's with 3.5T loaded in trailer as these wagons are used in real world applications all across Australia? Keep up the good work.

      @reubs91 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only a small percentage of ute owners actually tow up to 3.5t, so the test is probably more relevant to 95% of people towing.

      @@patrioticpengu1n. There’s a big reason y it would be difficult to find all factory stock vehicles after a 1 year period. For the typical person that buys them. Drives to school, shops, work & odd 750kg towing. Stock dual cab is fine & mostly overkill…. Anything above that ie. work ute, off road, off road camping & the grey nomads. All need modification. Anything from a change of tyres to a full setup.

    Thank you as I really appreciate your great job done and comprehensive testing!
    You managed to answer about all the questions I have.
    Brand new UTEs test is also about how they compare to the trusty old friends. So, special thanks for including the Gladiator as this gave me an idea how old petrol V6 might compete.
    The only point I would prefer to see is how old big diesel American trucks will perform under such test. I am talking about Ford F-250, F-350, RAM-2500, RAM-3500 etc. here. You might have also some other towing trucks in mind like 4x4 flatbeads or cabins (Iveco daily, Mitsubishi canter or similar).
    If you manage to extend this testing for such truck it would be just brilliant!
    Thank you and keep doing great things!

      Love my ecodiesel Gladiator Rubicon. The payload rating is way derated, I haul 1600lbs of water in the bed regularly, only way you really notice it is when the water starts sloshing around. Otherwise, it doesn’t even take all the rake out. I haven’t touched anything in the suspension. The diesel throttle is so smooth too, you could drive it with 1 toe on the pedal.
