Valve has announced a new Steam Deck OLED model, joining what it is now calling the Steam Deck "LCD" (original) models. The Steam Deck OLED includes a new screen, which itself Valve says will bring improvements to thermal performance, acoustics, battery life, and repairability. The Valve Steam Deck OLED enters a market that's growing with alternatives from the ASUS ROG Ally, the Lenovo Legion Go, GPD Win series handhelds, Aya Neo, and more. The new Steam Deck OLED will replace a couple models of the Steam Deck LCD, with remaining (old) inventory seeing a price reduction. The official Steam Deck OLED release date is November 16, 10AM Pacific, with reviews hitting the internet between now and then. Our review sample is arriving at time of publishing this news video. We will be benchmarking the thermals, battery life, acoustics, and charge time for the Steam Deck OLED in short order, so check back for that.

I can't hardly wait for you to test beta drivers on the deck and when it screws up, you blame it on LTT LOL!
my 1st gen deck's audio board shat the bed and they wouldn't sell me a new board. i am no longer interested in the deck
Great news! Are you planning on testing the Lenovo Legion Go?
I don't know, they also said we couldn't put a bigger internal card in the 64gb model. Have you tried to disassemble the screen on the oled model? @GamersNexus
Like to see IFIXIT get their hands on one.
Talk about a head scratcher....Why didn't they go with Zen 3 APU or maybe laptop gpu like the 7600M?
It is honestly so refreshing to have a company allow the hardware engineers to talk directly to media outlets instead of some marketing team. They are so helpful knowing exactly what they're talking about, down to all the details like heatsink fin height and fan thickness.
Even greater that they allow for reviews to go live way before the full release of it (though to be fair there shouldn't be a massive performance uplift).
These changes seem to be bigger than they are at a first glance. I wonder how much the die shrink does. All tests for the SD pointed towards witchcraft at 9-11 watt settings. Mine I rarely let go over 11 watt. And I am wondering what the 6nm die shrink will do for that optimization. I feel this could be actually bigger than the 20% bigger battery. I would have been happy with the bezel shrink which was the only thing that had bothered me. This is even more. 2tb micron 2230 is ordered. This is not the fourth SD I will buy. I have been giving these out to my nephews and nieces like candy.
Instead of "directly talking to media outlets" they should've talked to the customers, and maybe stopped lying about an upcoming refreshed model.. they literally say every single day somewhere, how they won't make a new one, i obviously didn't wait, just bought recently the "og" deck, but not recently enough to be able to refund it.. yeah they are so open and so helpful..
@MrGiHunt Valve didn't deny any refreshed model claims- rather they stated that there are no plans to upgrade the performance target for a couple of years, which is true so far. I actually remember them talking about how good it would be to improve battery and screen for the existing hardware, and that's exactly what they did
@@bugmenotaaaaaa Just don't.. just don't defend a multi-billionaire company.. anticonsumerism at it's peak
@@MrGiHunt no, YOU "just don't". valve have been clear about the refreshs. that's a hard fact. you're the one who is dunking on them by accusing them of something they simply did not do. this is not about "defending multi-billionaire companies", it's about sticking to the truth. keep your emotions in check before you post
Wow. A company that ACTUALLY differentiates between a refresh and a generational change?!?! And it doesn’t even have an X in the name
This is a really stupid marketing decision, truly.
I hope the next generation Steam Deck gets a better name like the Steam Deck HPC21080X1337
But it has a K in "Deck" so you know it performs well
That's valve for ya. Their good reputation for being pro-consumer is no joke.
Is what being a private non-traded company get's ya.

D is 500 in roman numerals, e represents a mathematical constant equating to approximately 2.71828183, c is roman for 100, and k is 1,000.
When multiplied it turns the steam "deck" into the steam 135,914,091.5 and truly is a great name with obviously great performance.
Companies do that all the time, what are you talking about
The 1TB model is listed with an "Exclusive startup movie". What a premium feature. I hope Steve covers this on GN's review.
It better be a video of Gaben saying "You're the man!" every time.
Old 256/512 gig models had an even better one: custom keyboard theme
It's the full _Shrek_ trilogy (unskippable). DreamWorks isn't exactly giving those rights away.
For those who didn't live in r/SteamDeck (🪦 reddit), before Steam made a official way to change the startup video, replacing it with _Shrek_ was one of the sub's biggest memes.
Seems like I have to collect steam decks now to get all the digital goodies.

Forgot the "more" in that statement. 😊
Wow looks like a company that actually wants to do a nice upgrade and listen to its customers. Looks super promising and fixes most of what would prevent me from buying the first one
It's almost perfect. I just wish it had a USB4 port, so that we could use eGPUS.
That would genuinely mean I'd never bother with a Windows Desktop PC again.
That's what you can achieve if you have no outsider meddling with your business, and a huge store that finances everything you make.
same here, fixes basically every problem that caused me to hold off on the first deck... probably buying this refresh
It doesn’t fix what’s keeping you from buying one, it’s because you’re still mentally stable, this thing is for people who have to bring a fidget spinner everywhere they go. ADHD problem children.
I sold my launch Deck, because it was buggy and soured my experience. But I will be picking up a OLED model to give it another chance.
Adding threaded metal inserts into the plastic injection molding is really expensive. I’m super happy that Valve decided to make that change, though!
Very much needed. My Deck is down 2/4 long screws that snapped in half inside the plastic moulding. Glad they're showing their commitment to reparability.
The device is expensive too...
@@michaelmonstar4276and its still very much cheaper than the competition performance and efficiency wise
I reassembled my ancient laptop once and it had problems, the second time 2-3 screws would not get the hell out no matter what. Plastic housing is horrifically bad... It's really great that they are doing this.
I thought heat set nuts were added after molding not during or is that only the DIY method?
Overall sounds like Valve is moving in the right direction with the deck. Looking forward to the full review from GN.
They aren't moving forward at all. It's still horribly underpowered, they didn't even change the specs to upgrade it at all....

I'm really excited about the Linux HDR support that Valve has been working on. It would be awesome to be able to play games in HDR on my desktop. Thanks Valve for making gaming on Linux more possible than ever!
Exactly. It was just about a month or two ago that I realized HDR wasn't really a thing on any Linux-distro, and disappointment set in (although my monitor isn't the most capable anyway). - But here's the push it needed. I hope they found a way to probably also standardize it, like with the HGiG-efforts.
Right, I probably wont buy a deck anytime soon but I am so happy its been such a success. Valve has done so much heavy lifting for Linux gaming mainly because of the deck, and I am very happy about it.
HDR is still not present in general in Linux. It is now just available for gamescope which supports certain games. From what I have seen the HDR support is almost getting ready to be finalized for wayland and KWin (KDE compositor, Steam also uses KDE) already have a experimental branch to test HDR. It may need some time to iron out and become mainstream but it will be soon.
I think the stealth big news here is the possibility that Valve is going to make HDR on Linux mainstream. Fingers crossed.
Multiple different groups already working on this. With AMD gpu when running gamescope as main compositor you already can get HDR on linux. Gnome devs are working on 10bit color support which is needed for HDR.
Yeah, I know HDR support (on external displays) is part of the SteamOS 3.5 update notes, but it's only now sinking in that they've made this much progress.
I'm also hoping this means that SteamOS 3.5 is set to finally leave beta on or before the 16th.
I'm not a Linux user beyond begrudgingly, but it's definitely great to see Valve bringing enough people over that the needle on gaming stuff for Linux has been noticeably shifting in a short period. Maybe it will push more games to support HDR or even nudge MS to further improve Window's impementation.
@@ninele7 Plasma 6 is already supposed to have HDR support as part of it's roadmap, but at least now Valve is on track to boost development a whole bunch with an OLED model now.
They had HDR capable compositor since some time, however it's not intended for normal use. HDR in linux is expected to be delivered early 2024
What I like about Valve is they are listening to the community. I believe the top 2 requested things was an OLED screen and better battery. The fact they've improved the cooling solution and thermals/efficiency with a node shrink while reducing weight slighty is impressive.
I'm glad they've stuck with the same aspect ratio and resolution. I'm not convinced the benefits of full HD in such a small format is worth the performance loss driving more pixels.
If you want to notice things, note how they're a private company while most of the competitors are public companies.
Thermals and efficiency is not improved, 6nm node doesn't offer that advantage over 7nm node.
If they were listening to the community they'd start working on Half Life 3. :)
@@soragranda Proven otherwise
Yeah, I'm pretty sure every change is something that the community has wanted and a few more on top of that.
I could see increasing the screen resolution being cool if they combined it with some magical dynamic resolution software to keep from eating the battery and performance for no reason.
As in, it'd be nice if you were watching a 4K movie if the screen could display it natively but for the majority of the time it was lower resolution.
Just in time to deck the halls.
Lots of new stuff on deck to release still this year.
And here I was about to get an Odin 2 for my Xmas gift
With bawls🍸 and a lolli🍭.
Really wish it had hall effect sticks.
A quick note about the download speeds: Steam supports P2P downloads from machines on your LAN so download speeds aren't necessarily restricted by your ISP!
they are if their router is crap, which most of them force you to use their router.
depends where you live, when i lived in the UK they forced you to use crap, now i live in Sweden and can use my own router.
Edit: For people who dont seem to know, The deck uses WIFI, so if your WIFI on your router is crap, then it affects LAN speed too. OMFG.
@@ricky_pigeon The trick is that there is nothing stopping you from getting your own router and having theirs just be the go between.
Do that and you can go even farther and have whatever wifi setup you want.
I actually get significantly better download speeds when downloading over the internet vs local transfer. I think it may have to do with the local PC having to compress the data to Valve's format so it matches what you would get from their servers, but there could be other factors influencing the speed as well. I have a 5950x, but I still only get like 250-300Mbit/s on local transfer to my SD vs 400-500 via internet (both over WiFi).
@@LanceThumpingso the off the shelf router would be connected to the ISP's router and that one to the internet? Wouldn't that make the problem worse? Or did you mean smth else
Local transfer is capped to something like 15Mb/s with no way to change it that I could find, so unless you have terrible internet, its not very useful. Still nice to have
An OLED screen was the only thing missing from the Deck keeping me from buying one. I’ll be lining up to throw money at Gaben for that gorgeous translucent model now, GGs Valve.

I overclocked my RAM on the deck from 5500 to 6400 and it made a massive change in some titles, a noticeable change.
much more than any CPU/GPU clock increase.
So nice to see the refresh get a speed increase for non overclockers.
I never bothered to overclock anything in this. In the contrary. I tried to underclock and undervolt with no real luck. That thing is out of the box as efficient as it can get and eats the competition between 9 and 11 watt. The 6nm die shrink and the reduced bezel and the 20% bigger battery are reason enough to get one. What are you thinking of? Buying a whole vat of Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and a new backplate and unleash the rage of hellfire? Are we turning the Steamdeck into some kind of boomer hotrod?
Using Smokeless? I completely skipped the RAM settings the last time I did an OC, but I'm getting ready to apply a fresh one once SteamOS 3.5 drops.
@@GSBarlev i was on preview branch and the bios updated, but i was using smokeless, i'm not sure how you do it as of this moment. i'm waiting till 3.5 hits stable then i'll see if its possible to change ram speed again. in some games, i can give an example, GTA5 my frame-rate was increased by around 20-30% in multiplayer, in a solo lobby so there was no other players, increasing CPU or GPU clock did little, overclocking ram, major increase in fps that i noticed before even toggling on the FPS graph, cyberpunk was another game to benefit.
The GPU and CPU share the same memory so this is why you get a big increase in performance, not so much on a desktop pc with dedicated GPU memory.
the new deck will have a refresh rate increase to 90, you can also overclock the current steam decks refresh rate, i run mine at 70. just something else to look into if you care about that.
@@bjorn-falkoandreas9472 increasing the memory frequency does not typically result in any downsides to efficiency.
If anything it should instead improve efficiency by allowing the APU to work quicker and go back to lower states sooner.
You can at the same time increase memory frequency while decreasing APU frequency/voltage, the two changes are completely independent
The original model was already an amazing value proposition, replacing it with something that is a clear upgrade in every meaningful way is only a win. Shoutout to them increasing the storage- I only finally got to upgrade from my 64GB model where it was painful dealing with the Proton shader caches, so finally having something bigger for the base model is huge.
It's hardly every meaningful way. It has not got a SoC performance increase.
@@wmoule You could argue it does in a way. Smaller process generally means lower power and better temps which would let it boost higher and longer.
Though it's likely not going to be a big increase if there is one in practical use.
I'm glad to see the 256gb replacing the 64gb version and still keeping the same price point.

So glad I waited on getting a Deck, great news!
Oh I was just about to get a deck, fantastic news. It's also nice to see compatibility with old shells.
I am perfectly happy with the LCD screen on my first Gen Deck and have only had issues with battery life and thermals when I tried PS3 emulation. Good to see the better thermals and battery life though, and I’m glad to see the eMMC memory is going away. I would have gotten the 64GB with a bigger SD card if it would have been a NVME and not eMMC.
It’s also crazy to see a company embrace user repair and modding in 2023, and I love it.
Yea, I bet PS3-emulation is a hog to run... Apparently it doesn't even work that smoothly on a solid desktop-PC, right?... What an enigmatic blackbox the PlayStation 3 still is, and what a misfire for gaming and support, really... Technologically interesting and quite impressive, but an unorthodox choice for a general videogame/media-console. Cause to this day: W.t.f. was even that?! - And now we have something as open and flexible as the Steam Deck. We're living in the future now..... and now..... and now still.....
...and even now... etc.
@michaelmonstar4276 Performance wise Infamous ran about on par with real hardware, about 20-25 fps at 720p during the intro. Perfectly playable honestly. Just didn't want to literally burn up my Steam Deck playing it very long. The new thermals and battery hopefully help with that.
Steve you are a gentleman and scholar. I just seriously want to thank you for keeping me up to date :D
The limited version I think successful is not only about selling out, but about their being a higher return rate because of different supplies assembly and material cracking, qa etc
Sounds like a pretty darn good refresh across the board and is hitting on all the things I've heard people wish for in an update.
Would've been amazing if they had updated the APU to Zen 3/RDNA 3 with the same core/CU counts but that would've been a much larger change and the die shrink is already good.
There were a lot of people still going with the Steam Deck over the Ally and others because of it's more consistent performance (IIRC the Ally sometimes weirdly performed worse), great hardware design, etc.
So this refresh is just going to make them even more competitive for those few years until SD2.
The SD still is the certified king at 9-11 watt. I wonder what the combination of die shrink and 20% bigger battery does to that. What is the power consumption of OLED compared to LCD? Shouldn't that also be less because OLED does not have lamps illuminating dark LCDs? The SD is a no-brainer for the touchpads. I played 10 hours of Stellaris on that one just because I wanted to test real quick if that is viable. It was.
There's a good argument to be made that by keeping the performance essentially the same, it's a fixed target for game developers. The original deck is still very capable at 800p, and well optimized games should be able to be stable at 30fps at that resolution, even with very high graphical fidelity. (Hogwarts Legacy and Armored Core 6 both come to mind.)
@@bjorn-falkoandreas9472 Yeah, according to some users the battery life has gone up massively (at least in the titles they tested).
I'm still eagerly awaiting GNs followup in-depth testing.
Please test the Legion Go alongside the Steamdeck! I really want to buy one of these handhelds but I don't know which one yet. I was leaning Legion Go for the bigger screen, but I can't do it until you guys release a good review with all the details.
If they come up about even for you, then I hope you go with the Steam Deck to support the ongoing (rather gigantic) work of getting good Windows compatibility on Linux. Microsoft is getting more and more frisky with our privacy so having Linux as a viable option for most regular consumers is an absolute boon.
@@andersjjensen Is it not possible to "just" install SteamOS on any of the other handhelds?... I imagine there could be complications, but it doesn't seem unlikely. (I've never looked into it.) - But don't worry, there will be plenty of support for Proton, as it's used plenty and increasingly so. - I'm pleasantly surprised how it just exploded and how much works with it. I just switched to a Linux-distro at the start of this year and it seems to be permanent because of efforts like Proton (as well as, indeed, hearing increasingly negative stuff about Windows (11), while other than it just dying on my for one last time I was actually quite good with Windows 10). - And now that they seemingly have cracked HDR (hopefully standardized with HGiG or something, and not exclusive to Arch-distros like SteamOS), it seems I'm/we're on the fast-track to using HDR on PC as well (I was disappointed to find Linux doesn't seem to have proper support for it yet when I got my new monitor about two months ago). - So, whichever device, I'd just try running SteamOS or some form of Linux on it anyway, if at all possible.
I hope you also consider the quality of the Deck's OLED-screen, which according to Rich at DF is top-tier, like having a portable home-theater. - The thing is not only OLED with pixel-perfect contrast, it's also HDR-capable, it's color-accurate, it's fast... I mean, OK... I'm "all about size" (heh), I use a 38" (hehe) 21:9 at arm's length (HAH), so I totally get the preference. But since I got an OLED-TV recently... There's just nothing like it. And yea, it's about a small screen in this case, barely the surface of a DVD-case that is, and it's much more "casual" and all that. But it's just a better screen. - If you just want a larger, more in-your-face experience from an almost 9" LCD at 144Hz and higher resolutions than 800p, then Go with the Legion, sure. But keep in mind that motion on an OLED will be tighter, even at 90Hz, AND you also need the power to drive higher framerates and resolutions. - You're probably going to have to upscale a lot and a somewhat larger screen with a higher resolution is going to show more flaws. - I'd honestly opt for the slightly more modest size and resolution and refresh-rate, which is also lighter on the power (including OLED versus LCD on top of that), but get a much higher quality image in return, even if it's almost an inch-and-a-half less diagonally.
But then, what I personally would play on a device like this might differ a lot. I mean, no way I'd play high-action shooters or open-world stuff on it. I'd play things like platformers and puzzlers and perhaps management-games or arcade-racers. - So yes, if I'd insist in playing something like DOOM, as the Legion Go page would suggest, I might rather go with that one. But I'd much rather have the "pop" and tightness of the OLED for the stuff I'd be looking at. - My two Euro-cents. 🤷
will you do a review for the Lenovo Legion Go?
Thans!

Great Job as always!
keep up the testing and reporting. i love my steam deck so much i just might try to get the limited one
Shame a oled upgrade won't be possible, but its understandable since it seems you would need to change the cooler, battery and maybe parts of the chassis.
I'm not sure why, it uses less power, and is not as deep, so it should fit in just fine (though since there would be more room, that might cause it to be more flimsy I suppose), but there could be some other valid reason why they don't want to do it.
@@tosvus Refreshed APU and RAM, could be harder to validate between LCD, "LCD->OLED" and OLED models if they offered some kind of upgrade. Maybe someone will mod it though if they sell replacement oled screens?
The other big issue is internal display connectors arent as well standardized as external ones so its possible the new panel is physically incompatible with the old mobo
Reselling the OG deck will be difficult now considering a refurbished 64GB model is only $280.

nice direction they are going! I hope we get a nzxt H6 review soon.
Valve is awesome!!
I really want that Limited edition. I'm completely frustrated that the Steam Deck is still not directly available in Australia, and that we are forced to go through potentially dodgy third party sellers who may or may not honor warranty claims. But will definitely jack up the price.
Or we have to create a US Steam account, and use a VPN plus good forwarding services to get one direct from Valve, with no warranty. Steam should have global distribution by now. I don't care if they were burned by EB Games, there are other retailers in Australia if they want to go that route.
Their competitors aren't excluding the Australian market. I just want to give Valve my money. Why do they have to make it harder than it needs to be?
I do have the money in hand to be able to buy the new version on launch. seriously tempted order from the US and have it on-shipped to me.
Retailers in Australia include:
Kogan/Dicksmith (Same company) a company that I've had a bad experience with a couple times. I stopped using them after the last experience.
Amazon from some company called Skyradar, no idea who they are.
Catch from some reseller called Tech Tack, no idea who they are.
None of the major retailers or computer shops are grey importing Steam Decks. That's a pretty big red flag to me. That signals to me that warranty support is not good.
This is why we need an official, supported release of Steam Deck in Australia still.
It has been 2 damn years

Awesome little upgrade, especially with the addition of 90hz. Love my LCD deck and while I'd love one of these OLED ones, I have no issues with mine currently.
I always hated LCD technology, image quality is bad. I have a Plasma 1080i TV, CRT TV and monitor and OLED.
LCD doesn't have black, the colors aren't good and the motion response is so bad (Sonic games are unplayable here).
I'm hoping the screen can still run at 60Hz-90 doesn't divide into quite as many of the Deck's magic fps numbers as the current 40-60 does.
@@GSBarlev was wondering that too. The 40hz setting is an absolute godsend on the deck as is so hopefully the 90hz OLED has the capacity to natively run at 40hz rather than just software limiting frame rates and not the actual refresh rate.
@@GSBarlev 90hz still reduces sample-hold motion blur.
Hope the new display is a drop-in replacement even though it is 0.4“ bigger, but the chances of that seem pretty slim
This is pretty much exactly what I wanted, as most of what I play doesn't need a lot of power but I'm so spoiled by OLED (or as-good screens) on everything else I have.
AND apparently it draws LESS power than the LCD-panel. So you'd be saving in that area as well. - Not quite sure about when it's in HDR, but I think it might not be a lot more.
Waiting to see if this thing will get scalped. Good to see Valve pushing out such a quick upgrade.
Now I may actually get one. I'd like the limited edition, I'll preorder it right away if I'm able to.
Dang, I love my deck, and this is a nice refresh, but I'm one of the rare users who will make use of all the features of the Legion Go (eGPU, detachable controllers, powerful CPU, 1600p display it's a friggin tablet). I'll probably recommend the new steam deck to anyone looking for a handheld over the Legion Go, though (unless they meet very specific criteria) -- especially with that OLED display.
I’ll go with the legion go instead bigger screen and 144hz I don’t care about oled I have a monitor that’s oled the go has more power and has good features plus big updates coming for it tomorrow and more down the road.
The original LCD Steam Deck was a great peice of kit that I was very happy with. This refresh seems to be a decent improvement over that as well!
Of what I've seen on DF, it's quite a big improvement in terms of the image-quality. Not in a way that it makes the LCD look bad or anything, but an OLED-display, and HDR-capable at that, is just a whole other level, not to mention the color-accuracy and such. - And all the other updates are just great nice-to-haves, some perhaps even essential. - I just like how they took on all the feedback and tried to address most of it. - Imagine that.
The hemi-anechoic chamber reminds me of the stealth test in the first Splinter Cell.
Still excited about that general steam OS install. I want a game box attached to my TV~
Man, I specifically got a steam deck earlier this year because they said there wasn't going to BE any revisions until at least 2025. Thanks valve.
Too early, Chandler Bing...
I'll probably never get a Steam Deck unless they go completely space cookie and give it wired ethernet (in which case it could be a handy network diagnostic tool), but I'm VERY grateful for the work Valve is doing for gaming on Linux.
Even in it's current state you can get an adapter that uses the usb c port just like the docks that add ethernet.
@@shoopnooop2952 Ethernet emulation over USB is fine for connectivity but it doesn't offer the same driver level features as hardware ethernet where you can hijack kernel interrupts, etc.
I just wish the triggers had the same end button than the steam controller had, those were great!
omg im so excited!! i just ordered a replacement fan for mine but maybe ill return it and try to sell my current one for the new 1tb one!!!!
If anyone had told me 10 years ago that the Steam Box would be a handheld gaming computer, I would have laughed my butt off.. but here we are, I am genuinely interested in getting one, I just haven't had the money to spare for one yet, so this hardware refresh is a welcome news story.
Actually, I would've thought that would be a much more sensible way of doing it. Because... while I was seeing the potential of like "non-sucky pre-builts" with a literal Steam operating-system on it to bridge the gap between PC and console, having it in a more convenient device that's also portable with all bells and whistles on it to control it would probably have been more attractive back then as well. - Of course, their experiments and experience with the Steam Box and probably the Steam Controller led to the Steam Deck, so yea. - Just saying, I didn't think of it back then, but I probably would've been more like: "Oh... Yea, that probably actually makes sense for a general consumer." - But then, having this kind of power in it back then, that's a different story. But that might also be what you were getting at...
Ok this will be an instant buy from me - I've been holding out on the Steam Deck and the primary factor was that screen.
Guys, please also test the Lenovo Legion GO
"That we could find"...wild Aya Neo appears 😂
I love how they said they're not going to release a new one any time soon and this is markedly better in every way 😂
I think the idea is to not launch a new one that has better CPU and/or GPU. Because developers really like to have few, stable configurations to test against. So having the same CPU and GPU for say, 5 years, is really good.
@@Winnetou17 That is true, however comments from Valve in the past indicating that we wouldn't be seeing a display upgrade in a refresh either, and yet here we are.
Anyway, shut up and take my money.
@@mesasone2280 Agree on the last statement :D
Stil, was lazy to check myself, but in LTT's video it shows what was actually told, and they only said it's difficult. And that they won't make a faster one (instead of a new one), sooo ... they actually didn't lied.
I knew they'd do an oled steam deck, glad I waited.
I just saw the real review at LTT. Nice surprise upgrade
Would really love to see the anti-glare OLED screen and normal OLED screen side by side outside, and see what looks better. Less glare, or full black intensity?
Dave2d actually mentioned this in his video, the etched glass brightens the blacks and looks worse but can be fixed by using a screen protector.
@@lemonscampi Yeah, but the glare has definitive disadvantages outside with sunlight in the surroundings. And it surely woldn't make any sense to pay more for the etched screen just to stick a protector on. Might as well just buy the cheaper one and be done.
@@lgolem09l LCD version looked fine without anti-glare, my 13 year old laptop though... any amount of daylight made it horrific to use. I think that OLED lessens the difference further. I really don't want to pay 120€ more just for 512GB more storage when 512 GB is MORE than enough, just delete some games and stuff if you don't use them for a while, they download and install quick enough nowadays anyways with some decent internet.
And there is no point to buying now price cut LCD versions at all, given that the battery life is the biggest issue of handhelds and this one improves that by a lot, +90Hz is gonna be huge, just using it without games is gonna be a bit noticeable, typing should be a ton(on my 144Hz monitor that i barely reach with 1070Ti... just opening programs, moving around etc is super noticeable 60-144, 90 will be less so, but it will be). And OLED screen... my phone P30 pro apparently has it, everything does look REALLY great on it, but im never gonna watch a movie on such a tiny screen... some YT videos here and there yes, but... Now on Steam Deck, hell yes, bed watching will be a thing for me.
@@lgolem09l Exactly.
Probably will wait for an APU upgrade before jumping from the LCD Steam Deck, but this is awesome all-around. Freesync would be an instant upgrade.
Once again first in the presentation well done Steve 💪😎🤘
I didn't hear Steve mention this, but the speakers were also improved.
ive had my steam deck since Q3. I'm tempted by this one but i wouldn't have gotten back into gaming as much as I did if it wasnt for the OG. Ill keep that one and wait for SD2. awesome product!
Thinking the same. This is tempting but there is realistically nothing wrong with the og one.
i'm saying. @@GameTimeWhy
So basically there's no chance for a screen upgrade kit for the old model?
There is, cause it's the same physical size and not thicker but thinner. It probably just depends on compatibility in terms of connecting it up and such. - I'd look at ifixit to perhaps come up with something. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd start selling a kit.
@@michaelmonstar4276 yeah it would just need a bracket since it's thinner, but I doubt that a valve sanctioned kit will be released.
wohoooo happy I waited. Going to buy steam oled for sure
I NEED it!!! I have a steam deck already but these upgrades are good enough to get a new one
Not only are the upgrades address the exact complains that the community had (brighter screen & battery life), but they also improved cooling as well as making it cheaper!
(256G model I got was 549e and now they sell 512G OLED for 569e) They're going to sell out day 0, as they should.
Valve is the best
This time it's not gonna take months of preorder waiting too. Surely they have stockpiled, learning from last time just how much people wanted it, and overall increase in popularity over time. I think people will wait at most 1 month(super max 2, which is both WAY less than LCD, first launch).
@@kiloneie The timing looks suspiciously like they're trying to get them shipped for xmass, so it's a 100% no wait zone unless some major scalper accident happens
@@Dizintegrator Steam Deck sold millions, there is no way in hell scalpers can affect what Valve has in store. I don't see preorders, but i am sure that they are sure that they have a strong supply.
Man i do want the Steam Deck, it's such a crazy value for money, but i also want a physical keyboard and something smaller and so GPD Win 4 and even Win Mini are still more attractive even though they are much more expensive(but also much more powerful, especially in the processing power, productivity).
@@kiloneie I sure would like to think so too.
As an owner of steamdeck I can vouch that while its onscreen keyboard is surprisingly easy to use thanks to two trackpads, I still find myself using my bluetooth one to do any significant typing. So if built in keyboard is a must for you, SD is not your bro. However, if you will mainly be gaming on it then SD has the best experience so far thanks to their steam integration and the ability to use third party stuff too. Oh, and its BIG too, so you won't be putting it in your pocket any time. In fact, the case or a pouch is pretty mandatory and with it the whole thing becomes even bigger.
That being said, I'm extremely satisfied and a bit salty because I want the new one but the old one serves me well still :)
It's crazy that valve (while stocks last) is selling a refurbished 64gb steam deck for $279. They really cornered the handheld pc market and got it in a choke hold right now.
Except Nintendo (I know, not PC), which just keeps on Nintendoing at their Nintendroids. - And then there's the... PlayStation Portal... which... can do nothing on its own, for a lot of money. - If only Sony (of all companies) would've made something like an Ally or Legion and pre-loaded it with SteamOS or something, then did some kind of cross-thing between PSN-accounts and Steam-accounts or whatever... People would love them for it. But naaaaa..... Would be so cool, though, to hook Steam up to PSN, be it through a Sony-device, or the Deck, or just any PC with Steam. If they want to move onto the PC-platform/market so much, what's with the hesitance to connect?!
Thank you TechJesus . Just order a steam deck .
When do new case reviews come?
Wonder if valve will have a trade in or a upgrade kit for the older decks
No upgrade, as explained in the video.
I don't think they'd do that kind of thing. - Perhaps other companies like ifixit, which they do work with, might create them, though... I'd look there. - Cause I also see talk of putting the new screen into the first Decks, for example.
I think many deck owners let out a sigh of relief when they heard that there isn't a very tangible performance increase 😂
I bet that they're pretty annoyed that there are so many upgrades otherwise. - Also, it actually does run significantly smoother. It's like a more optimized version, this APU. Not saying like a boost in framerates (perhaps some lighter games), but definitely stuff like smoothness in frametimes seems to be there.
@@michaelmonstar4276Yes, but having the same performance, the devs can carry on optimising games as if it’s a single sku
Nice. I've been thinking about a SD for a long time...don't really travel so mainly just at home\friends\work\parents handheld stuff, for emulation and retro PC games (which i think look and play better on a small screen handheld vs a huge monitor or tv). Might just jump on the discounted OG SD.
Is there going to be an in depth review of the Lenovo Legion go? maybe a comparison between the steam deck/rog ally/legion go.
I like the new deck a lot! Valve improved on almost all aspects people wanted and its not even more expensive its even cheaper and has more storage. Sadly i already got a day one deck here and a second one would be overkill.
Man I just bought mine a month ago, if I knew Oled was coming I'd have waited :(
You're not missing out much it's basically the same device with slight improvements. Deck is great been playing many good games.
imagine steamdeck os on the ally, what a great experience that would be!
I wonder if there will be an upgrade path... *watches video* damn.
Interesting since it seems super easy to swap components. I could see the battery not being changeable due to the seating. Since the display takes up less space should be possible. Maybe the ribbon cable and attachment positioning is different?
I can totally see the community figuring out how to 3D print modifications to get the new components working in the old shell.
