    This Steam Deck review (or initial review, anyway -- we're still waiting on ability to review SteamOS) looks at the production-ready Arch Linux-based handheld gaming PCs for the first time. The video includes methodology notes for our in-depth testing approach and demonstrates the basics of the more advanced principles we apply behind-the-scenes in testing. The benchmark sections follow those, with a heavy focus on Steam Deck battery life, thermal testing of the memory, ICs, APU (GPU/CPU), and more, and acoustic testing alongside RPM ramp and hysteresis.
    We're looking forward to a review of the UI and OS for SteamOS in the future. We didn't test Windows yet because the drivers were incomplete, and so the data would not accurately depict a version with GPU drivers.

    • @michael1
      @michael1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, not really. What we know about Valve is their staff have a short attention span when it comes to projects and a boss who hasn't cared for decades - just look at the guy, zero self respect to walk around like that. He will let his staff walk away from a project kidding himself and anyone that will listen this is some kind of enlightened management style rather than the crock of shit it is.
      Whilst that is annoying for a £30 multiplayer game you enjoy, it's the death knell for hardware. Do you really want to buy a games system from a company who can't run a few servers for a multiplayer game without bots, cheaters and scammers? And imagine as and when games are as unplayable as TF2 is today on said hardware some fat unwashed guy from the company tells some school kids a pile of BS that they are fixing it when they clearly have no interest or intent to doing that. Good luck getting problems sorted once Valve lose interest, you'll have an expensive paperweight.
      Only an idiot would buy this given Valve's lack of commitment to their existing hardware and their lack of commitment to their gaming franchises. This will fail firstly because they are still trying to beat the long dead horse of linux gaming. Half the games or more either won't work or will work with bugs and caveats. That might be ok if you install linux + steam on your PC for fun but it will be a nightmare for people expecting to buy a handheld console and have it just work. These people are going to learn first hand too just how useless Valve are at support and how uninterested they are in the problems once they've got your money.
      Gabe BS for making his games free to play was that the free players would add value to the paying customers. The reality however is these players are free because they are worthless. They cheat, they scam, or they fill servers not even playing the game. The multiplayer servers slowly got worse and worse and Valve have done precisely nothing at all to address this - other than a few bandaids to stem negative press about bots being racist etc. They didn't remove bots that made the game unplayable, they just removed their ability to generate headlines.
      Make no mistake. This is what will happen to this product. Valve will fail and Gabe will just BS and lie when asked about what they intend to do. Other Valve staff will rationalise and say how failure isn't failure at all.
      Secondly because their staff will quickly want to move onto something else leaving the same kind of team consisting of "one intern and a halfwit" they've had working on TF2 for the past 5 years or more. Or worse, like the steamlink / controller / steam machines, they will just let it die completely and stonewall customers. Ok, the controller and steam link were next to useless and pointless anyway so few dismayed customers. This, on the other hand, will have a much more public failing.
      You'd have to be stupid to hand over money to valve for this product.

    It was bold of Valve to add DX12 titles in their lineup of games allowed to review. For those unaware, the Steam Deck will use vkd3d for translation of DX12 games to Vulkan. vkd3d is not near as mature as DXVK, which handles DX9 to DX11 titles. The Steam Deck overall should see better performance in DX11 titles than DX12. If the game gives you the choice of renderer, go for DX11. @@mbvglider I agree. After the flop of the steam machines, they made absolutely sure this one was right. They are probably making quite the loss on the hardware side, but hardware is not their business. They invest into a whole new gaming ecosystem, which they can profit from with software.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thorwaldjohanson2526 Yeah, they must be losing a lot of money on this one. It's basically a portable PS5 but with twice the RAM, added screen and battery, and yet the price is still very affordable. There will be a lot of people (like me) who buy it and don't even really buy new games for it. As a Mac user, I'm buying this to be sort of a part-time portable Windows device that can run some X86-only software and RTS games on that I've purchased over the years, as it's waaaaay cheaper than any laptop or even a mini PC that has similar capabilities. Valve has done something amazing here. I have a feeling a lot of DIY users will find creative things to do with their Steam Deck that have nothing to do with gaming because of its specs and price. For instance, you could hook up a USB-C dock and run a very capable home server on it. The possibilities will be endless.

    As someone who has worked in a Failure Analysis lab for an aerospace circuit board manufacturer, I am pretty impressed with your testing methodology in this video. You have really upped your game recently and you should feel proud. The only thing I can think of that I would have done differently (I am making some assumptions about data collection) in my lab would have been to conduct the thermal tests in an environmental chamber where I could very precisely control temperature and humidity.
    Using a thermal chamber could also allow you to add another real world test like gaming outside during the summer.
    I have no idea if any of the above is something you would be interested in, but the thermal chambers I used in the lab were almost all made by Espec. The one I have in mind right now would be a bench top chamber in their SU/SH line.

    • @alexcrowl
      @alexcrowl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don't think comparing this device to any PC is really apples to apples. You can't carry a desktop tower on a plane. Steam Deck is cheaper than any gaming laptop, cheaper than most latest-gen GPUs, and half the price of "competing" handhelds.

      I too would still be interested in windows performance. Most people who buy a PC do other things than just game. If this thing can give me decent performance for some basic PC needs, it makes it an even greater value. I would get this over, say, an MS surface even as someone potentially considering a surface (obviously not for gaming).
      People always like to say "apples to apples" but I don't think that's always how a person shops. If you have to pick ONE tech thing to spend money on, you might very well put this up against a laptops, a tablet, etc. I wouldn't even mind a comparison against PCs/Laptops at double the price point. Having a good idea of exactly where this sits and deciding for yourself if the portability is worth giving up XYZ just makes sense from a consumer standpoint.

    • @destebangm11216
      @destebangm11216 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexcrowl yeah, comparing the steam deck to a similar PC desktop is just useless, 1 every gpu right now is expensive AF and portability cannot be done with a desktop specially running on a battery, it's a totally different product, and honestly at 400 dollars not a single PC can have those features at that price right now, the cheaper RDNA 2 card is 200 dollars and is a waste of money because of the PCIE lanes and the VRAM, and the Steam deck yeah just has 8 CUs but it has a 800p screen, a CPU and 16 GB of Ram, is insane

    • @lordmoose213

      @@andersjjensen the main things I can think of off the top of my head are modded Minecraft, (which admittedly won’t run incredibly no matter what but still runs a lot worse on AMD gpus), a lot of emulators and older games also use OpenGL. Doom 2016 used OpenGL until it was ported to Vulcan. IIRC blender also uses OpenGL. Though it probably should not be, it’s still relied on for many things.
