The raytracing in Control has worked for a while, on OG Deck too, but when it was originally released, Control was a whitelisted proof of concept game and you had to use launch options to enable it. This is quite literally exactly all I was hoping for with the refresh. The fact the screen is slightly larger is insanely amazing!! I just hope Valve finally officially release it here in Australia, so I can sell my current Deck and upgrade without paying the same price as I could for a Legion or Ally from a retailer here...
Honestly since I already own a 1st gen Steam Deck I'm sitting out on this one. However, I think the upgrade is rather big, because screen is one of the only complaints I have about the Deck, and before it was integrated into the OS, vibrantdeck made the screen 100% better, I could never go back to the Deck without it. Props po Valve for addressing the concerns of the community and actually listening to the community this time while still making the Deck cheaper than competition. They've really hit the nail on the head with the Deck and it's the single best gaming hardware purchase I ever made.
I suspect this will appeal to gamers that have not bought into the Steam Deck yet, or ones that have but want to upgrade regardless. Most that have the original Deck wont likely upgrade, but this Deck could open up the market to many of the gamers that didn't want to buy in because of the screen or battery life, with this Deck, it's a big quality of life improvement in a lot of areas, even the performance has got a nudge up which isn't anything special but it's there.
Agreed with you here I’m happy with my og steam deck with my swapped 1tb ssd. The improvements are impressive with this new model I applaud them for listening to the community to address the problems.
in a few weeks? there will be steam OS 3.5 stable ready for your deck with a new colorprofile via softwareupdate and it looks very good. I´m on the beta brachn and already use it. you will be surprised if you crank the colorslider to the far right what this not so good display can do now.
I'm hoping the competition from Asus and Lenovo pushed Valve to do this. I'm sticking with my Gen 1 Steam Deck, but if Valve starts an upgrade buyback program that's decently priced, I'm in! Also will be interesting to see the VibrantDeck plugin vs Oled, just to kinda see how far the improvement would be.
Valve is just doing corporation things. Don’t mistake the new changes as charity. They aren’t a publically traded corporation, but they are still a corporation. They are only following the scent of money. People here acting like they are doing all this out of the goodness of their hearts is literally insane.
Goodness gracious this is an amazing drop! I just bought mine over the Summer Sale and it's crazy how much they put into this refresh. No issues at all with my battery or screen with the games I play but I recently got an OLED laptop from work and having that OLED on my couch cozy deck is SO tempting.
Not a lot of people are mentioning the media component of the new deck...with OLED and better NIT. This device should be a beast for consuming media (movies, netflix, youtube ) true black color etc... can't wait to test it
This automatically makes me want a steam deck. I wasn’t interested at first because newer iPhones and the Switch Oled have spoiled me with their Oled screens.
As a owner of an iPhone 14 and switch OLED I still use my steam deck more…I’ve repurchased many games and it’s fine in handheld..but when you connect to a 4K tv is when the deck can still shine more even standard edition.
I honestly don't see a diference. I have an s20 fe OLED and a m1 ipad that isn't oled and I don't see the difference. I don't get the hype over it to be honest.
@@TheL1arL1arI'm the opposite, went back to my Switch within weeks of early adoption of the Deck. Got bored of spending more time optimising games than actually playing them.
I have an Ally and Steam Deck (bought the deck at launch) and always reach for the Ally bc the screen is so much better. Super cool to see this update, makes it pretty competitive again.
I got the deck on launch, rog ally at launch and legion go at launch. The steam deck is the weakest out the bunch I don't really like it. May trade my old deck for this one though, or mabye hold out for a deck 2. Valve should've made the deck oled smaller. I hate how bulky and heavy the deck is.
@@blackfalcon1610 I did when I had an sd card in there. It caused my Ally to freeze a lot, had some booting issues and eventually stopped reading it. I’m seeing in TH-cam videos that putting a heat shield strip over the sd card reader internally fixes the issues, but I haven’t tried it since then.
The older models are discounted too. That’s nice. Seems like a great time to either buy the shiny new thing ór the slightly less shiny thing for a great price.
Even the new ones come at a very good price compared to the predecessors, which isn't that common these days. Take that, $50-for-OLED Nintendo, $30-for-stand Sony, AND adorably-all-digital Microsoft! Oh, and don't forget Nvidia's 40 series, and Radeon 7000 to a lesser extent.
Worth mentioning for battery optimizations in Cyberpunk. That game will consume as much CPU power as it can, even though it doesn't improve your framerate. Locking it to 8W or 9W at the same settings, will yield 30fps and 15.8W TDP instead of 21.9W on the LCD model. I get ~3h with the 30fps cap. which would mean something like 4.5h on the OLED variant.
Exactly why I rarely purchase first gen. This info from Rich is making this 2nd gen a MUST buy for me. Everything he said is an upgrade. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Related to valve I bought the valve index when it was released. Two years back when one of the satellites went out they replaced it for me free of charge, way past warranty. No hassle or problems they just said they would take care of it for me and it was at my door in a couple days. So without hesitation I bought the steam deck OLED and I've been loving playing around with it. Great hardware, pretty easy to use and with some effort I'm able to play non-Steam games as well and mod my games. I 100% trust valves products.
I lost my steam deck carrying case asked steam support and like 5 minutes later they're shipping a new one free of charge and I was well past warranty.
I'm more than happy with my regular 512 steam deck, but I'm also happy for those that'll be able to get this new and highly improved Deck. In the end I am still very curious about whether or not I'd like to get this though haha
This is why I held out on getting a steamdeck this last few months. I’ll pick this one up. Should be good as I’m always having to travel. I’m sick of planes
As much as I want a nicer screen, I’d rather be able to run triple A games at a steady 60fps. And right now the steam deck can really only do 30-40 fps on them so I’ll wait til they upgrade the internals
Looks like a really cool update, but more geared towards those who have no handheld yet, I'm gonna wait for a Deck2. The new screen is nice but I don't really care for it, and while improved battery and slightly better performances is always good it's not big enough to justify the hassle or cost of switching version.
SD is a great platform for stuff like console emulation from the 7th gen and backwards, and multiplatform 8th gen games. The OLED in particular is also great with game streaming due to the strong wifi card inside it, so it can act like a PS Portal if you want it too. On top of all that, you can play PC games (especially Bethesda games) with mods. The integration of Gyro, trackpads, and programmable buttons is also superb with steam input, opening up a lot of typically keyboard and mouse only games to be more comfortable with a traditional style of controller. Its a great little piece of tech for enthusiast types who enjoy all those sorts of things. I dont know how much value it has for people who like a simpler "turn it on and play" experience. You may find better price to performance elsewhere, but the amount of software and community support for the deck is staggering, and it can handle all sorts of weird use-cases. I personally really enjoy mine
It's great to see Steam listened to criticisms of the initial Steam Deck, which like you said was an amazing handheld machine. I love my Steam Deck and use it more than my actual gaming PC at this point. I'm excited to see the improvements they keep making the deck and will probably upgrade in a few years if they keep this up.
I use it more than my desktop too! I never thought I'd be so happy to be able to just play anywhere and comfortably too! And I have a solar charger too so I get some pretty amazing portability! 😂
I own the first model and will be passing on this one, but I love that Valve is continuing to improve the hardware. Only good things can come from this.
May I ask why you'll be passing? I own the launch model too (512 / matte screen) and am on the fence. A part of me wants to sell and upgrade. Another feels it isn't worth the effort.
I appreciate that they've done this refresh but also kept it similar enough so that people who already own a deck who may have bought it recently don't feel absolutely burned for their purchasing. This looks absolutely great but as somebody who owns a regular deck I'm pretty happy with mine and will continue to be happy with mine. Being able to play on the go is brilliant and I love it, OLED or not.
I don't think I've ever seen Richard so giddy at the start of a video. Well done, Gabe. I wasn't initially too interested in upgrading my Steam Deck, but Richard may convinced me to.
What about the minimum brightness on OLED compared to the original display? I usually play at night and with ps vita OLED I wasn't able to due to high minimum brightness. Sometimes IPS can be better suited for special use cases...
If it matches the default Deck brightness settings it goes pretty low already, you can also add a color correction plugin (VibrantDeck) so you can go super low brightness if you want, same with the saturation.
I love how they used the upgrade mainly for battery efficiency so owning an LCD is just as good in terms of performance (I'm aware of the 2-3fps difference in games)
Was gifted an OG steam deck a few months after launch by my girlfriend and I still love it. Glad they didn’t burn us too bad with the upgrade, yet making the QOL of the product a whole lot better. Hopefully more peeps will try it out
My 512gb model comes tomorrow as well as a 1gb microSD card. I am beyond excited to finally put a dent in all these indie games I have that just never felt right to play at a desk. That and revisit some of my favorite titles from yesteryear. So glad I waited for this refresh.

I still hope however that battery life still continues to improve over the next generations. I think 4h at high demands should be the goal, i.m.o.!
I plan to grab this one and stay on the "refresh cycle", mainly because my interest in using this in the latest games doesn't really exist. I would consider this kind of platform a machine to replay old favorites or long forgotten titles. I'm getting too old to be stay up to date with all the latest titles.
They fixed all of the issues I had with the original model. Love my Steam Deck, the temptation to get the OLED model is high but going to wait for the Steam Deck 2. For those on the fence about the Steam Deck and don't already have one, now is the time to jump in!
the whole point of handhelds is portability, so I definitely value improvements in battery life more than raw power. I don't care about the latest AAA games, I care more about my already massive steam library. I've got a pc for fancy latest aaa already
I’m currently happy with the deck u have but excited for a couple years to pass by for when I want an upgrade because we can expect them to keep improving and I’ll be able to get a truly amazing upgrade in 3 or four years
I guess the only thing missing really is VRR. Set a refresh target to like 40fps and VRR could clean up any dips, or let you bump settings more and let you play in a constant variable refresh state. Overall, pretty awesome. I'd be pretty sad right now if I had the original Steamdeck with improvements on essentially everything.
If you keep waiting for the next versions improvements you’ll never get anything. Nearly 2 years from now someone will be saying they would have been sad to by this version of the Steamdeck…
This is a pretty incredible refresh for the SD! Ill be waiting for Steam Deck 2 to upgrade but new OLED owners will be very happy, especially if this is their first steam deck
I'm happy to pick this up, and then in two years if there is a Steam Deck 2 with the same OLED screen and battery life, but a more performance APU, I'd happily just upgrade. It's not really that expensive, especially if I subtract the cost of selling my old model.
I guess now it makes sense why they've had discounts on the older models recently. I bought one during the Summer sale and I kind of wish I had held out a bit longer, but it doesn't bother me all that much. Hopefully this means official OLED replacement screens will be available so those with the older models can upgrade from the LCD if they wish.
I hope they keep the oled screen for a steam deck 2. Won’t be upgrading to this since I’m still happy with my current deck but I’m excited for the future
Wouldn't mind if SD2 base model have a LCD screen though, having a very low cost to entry to me has always been a major thing for steam deck, to some people even the base SD1 have become a sufficient desktop replacement already.
It looks like a great mid gen refresh. I’m still glad I was an early adopter as I’ve had so much fun and beaten tons of games on it but if I didn’t already own one this would be tempting. Enjoy, all those that did wait though.
I'm tempted but I think I'll still wait for the Deck 2. Even though Valve has done a great job with optimization, I've still noticed some performance issues even on some not too demanding games.
Hey Rich! Was the performance boost not akin to steamos 3.5? Was the lcd model upgraded to beta channel or was it on stable? The performance gain maybe due to the wizardry valve made with the os upgrade.
No, it's the memory running at higher clock rates, that will give a performance upgrade in most 3D games, I think the original Deck was running at 5500 whereas I think Richard said the new Deck is running at 6400, so think of it like overclocking your vram on a gpu that gives extra performance. SteamOS 3.5 likely does help to deliver a bit more performance on some games, but the new Deck is going to be better performance over the old Deck in almost all 3D games thanks to the memory upgrade.
I've held off on getting a Steam Deck for awhile, and while this is a significant upgrade from the OG, it is quite a missed opportunity for Valve not to include hall effect sticks here. But maybe that's being saved down the line.
Aside from the Steam Deck OLED being a really nice upgrade over the base Steam Deck, it's also nice hearing Bjørn Lynne music in the background of a DigitalFoundry video for the first time in a while, Over Distant Shores is a very comfy track.
This is crazy. I already optimize the hell out of my current deck to get 2 and a half hours out of a game like Spider-Man. Using those same tweaks I can probably get closer to 4 hours on the OLED. I’m so hyped!
I very much enjoyed my old Steam Deck, but after I got the ROG Ally, I felt no need to keep it. I'm just happy I was able to sell my old Deck before the OLED one dropped; I would've probably had to lower the price on it. I'll keep my 1080p 120hz display on the Ally. Sure, I would love an OLED display, but I'm definitely happy with what I got.
i suppose its fair that had you not got/tried the original you might not have gotten interest in the device in the first place had you waited for an oled variant to show up.
@@adriantrusca1245oh I feel stupid alright. Just not for getting a steam deck. As a budget pc, it's perfect and often outperforms desktops in a similar price range. Portability just adds to that.
It's a shame Valve wasn't more transparent about their revision plans. I think they're going to sell fewer of these units as a result, personally I think this revision is fantastic. But now, like a lot of Rev 1 Deck owners: I'll just wait for the "Deck 2." Even if Valve claims that they're not planning to release a sequel to the Deck for several more years: they were saying that before surprising us all with this so.... 🤷♂️
2025 I suspect a Deck 2 will be released, if they wait longer then that, the Deck is going to look quite dated compared to other rivals on the market, also, the Switch 2 will be out by then, so I can't see Valve taking any longer then that. If I was a Deck only, I would wait it out for the Deck 2, unless you really want the better quality screen or battery life. In any event, I suspect this Deck revision is more for newer gamers that have not bought the Deck yet, many of them had complaints about the screen and battery life, something that's much better on this Deck.

The raytracing in Control has worked for a while, on OG Deck too, but when it was originally released, Control was a whitelisted proof of concept game and you had to use launch options to enable it. Since then, Mesa 23.2 (open source driver that Steam Deck uses) enabled raytracing on most AMD GPUs (including SD) for all games, no more whitelisting.
Nice! Last time I tried some games that had raytracing, the options were still greyed out. Maybe I need to take another look.

@@blackfalcon1610 I did when I had an sd card in there. It caused my Ally to freeze a lot, had some booting issues and eventually stopped reading it. So I took it out and I stopped having those issues. It can now read the same sd card again, but since I still have my deck, I didn’t have a need to use an sd card when my Ally had a 2TB installed (my SD has 3TB of storage).
I’m seeing in TH-cam videos that putting a heat shield strip over the sd card reader internally fixes the issues, but I haven’t tried it since then.

Thats true done the same it happens with quite a lot of Games so its great but i really wanna limit the CPU Mhz in Vanilla Steam OS

Valve actually is doing good work, happy early adopter here. Happy yall get the steam deck in full glory.
Man I'd been wanting a Steam Deck since launch but am so happy I I convinced myself to wait until they eventually released an oled model
Valve won me over with the repairability of the Deck.
I love how they used the upgrade mainly for battery efficiency so owning an LCD is just as good in terms of performance (I'm aware of the 2-3fps difference in games)

Superb refresh by Valve and definitely a role model for others, especially to Sony as well as M$ and Nintendo.

I guess now it makes sense why they've had discounts on the older models recently.

Ive been wanting the Deck from day one, but im so glad i waited. Excelent video!
I very much enjoyed my old Steam Deck, but after I got the ROG Ally, I felt no need to keep it. It's a shame Valve wasn't more transparent about their revision plans. I think they're going to sell fewer of these units as a result, personally I think this revision is fantastic. But now, like a lot of Rev 1 Deck owners: I'll just wait for the "Deck 2."
Even if Valve claims that they're not planning to release a sequel to the Deck for several more years: they were saying that before surprising us all with this so....
Its the part of being a early adopter.. Happens every time.
