Updated gopro.github.io/labs/control/owner/ so you can now type "DCR's GoPro ..." and have that work. That error bothered me at the start of your video. The single quote was sent as unicode, not ASCII, which is all the camera can display in the Labs firmware. It is now simpler for multiple line owner information.
Amazing, full, concise information, as per usual, i worked underground at a national air traffic control center for years and I've been blessed with working with people as professional as you, fantastic work, good Sir, you are a rare breed
The start recording at a certain time is fire. Seriously awesome. I love how GoPro wasn't afraid to show the inner workings. Not pretty UI or anything like that. I LOVE the QR code control. Im not sure they intended to do that, but if my gopro is mounted somewhere, having wifi will destroy battery, and the connection isn't very quick. Just holding a QR code up for a split second to change settings is seriously great
Great job, this is epic! The article I saw last night only mentioned 2 beta features in GoPro labs, it’s WAY more powerful and customizable than that. Thanks for the video showing it all.
Excellent presentation as always! This little camera continues to amaze me with all it is capable of doing. Thanks and always look forward to your next post!
I have aux batteries, but this is actually the feature that sold me. I've already sold my Hero 7 and upgrading to the Hero 8 for the ultra long timelapse feature alone.
Love the content!!! Just bought the Hero 8 bundle after watching your video and its been a HUGE help in making my own content! Thanks for the recommendation for that and for all of the drone content too! Keep it coming! :)
Boom! Enjoy the new cam, and definitely check out some of these features. Not all of them will be for everyone, but if nothing else I think the owner startup screen is brilliant!
Hell YES! My mind is spinning with all the possibilities of these. The long timelapse thing can be great in so many ways! My new 8 is on the way, ao I casn't wait to try this out. GP had to step up their game to compete with the new stuff out there and it seems they're still working hard at it. I love this. As of this comment, the 8 is on sale for $299 with no trade-in necessary! Time to buy.
Great video as usual however nobody is talking about the Hypersmooth boost option that's now available on the Superview POV setting which could be a game change for many. I posted a video about this yesterday.
Interesting, for me it defaulted back to 4K/60/Wide when I tried, but then again, that's probably a 60FPS limitation versus a 30FPS one. I often use Superview, so that'd be big to also get boost too!
Some neat features, thanks for sharing. The other week my Hero 8 was switching itself back on after i had switched it off....would finally switch off after a set period. Strange, but back to normal now.
Generating a QR code for each different profile is just amazing on the go. The quick preset on the camera were cool but this is even better. Gonna go print 10 of them on a paper and carry it with me all the time ! So quick to switch !
This is a game changer. GoPro should have released these experiments months ago. Agreed, the favorite ones will be folded into Hero 9. I know 90% representing GoPro Biffs and Bettys out there won't ever touch these features, but for us nerds....they fill a need we have always wanted in ONE unit.
That's seriously cool, really good to see these potential changes coming! The timestamp will be fantastic for a dashcam! Great video covering these, thanks!
I've stuck to my GoPro Hero Session 5 but these new features are super tempting to get a new GoPro. Even though these are features are in "beta" I like the direction they're going.
thanks DC cant wait to try this! going to test out the motion capture with my gopro at the birdbath and see how many birds it captures once i come back! this was a pain to go through the footage before when recording for long periods :)
Haha...that's awesome! It'd be interesting to see how you find the sensitivity settings. You might need to end up giving GoPro feedback there. I found the 1 (least sensitive) is still crazy sensitive. There is an option though to 'learn' the background a bit, but I didn't dig into it.
DC Rainmaker yes you’re right I also think the background setting at 5 second works great however it didn’t stop the capture even when hold capture after no motion detected was on 0 seconds. Did it stop recording for you when you tested it? I never managed to get it to stop.
Thanks DC, any news on Hero 9? Maybe a new chip? The GP1 chip was new with the Hero 6 Black in 2017, and it was the first in-house chip designed by GoPro itself rather than by Ambarella. The GP1 chip added the company’s HyperSmooth stabilization technology. In the Hero 7 Black, the GP1 chip was boosted to 2 MB of RAM, but more could be done to improve the chip further. Some possible areas of improvement for a GP2 chip include improved shooting in low light, greater manual control, better slow-motion capture and new apps. A new chip could also enable the GoPro Hero 9 to achieve the 120-frame rate for 4K and 480-frame rate for Full HD. Additionally, offering new apps with the camera could further improve its capabilities.
Great info/vid, thanks! I love the idea of being able to have the camera wake shoot then sleep. Only prob is looks like you can’t use that feature with night lapse video. Wish they would allow that. On my backpacking trips I go to bed early but want to do a 2 hour nightlapse in middle of night without having to wake up to start and stop.
I'd consider providing that feedback in the forum. From talking to the GoPro person in charge of it, they really are super interested in hearing peoples feedback and already have things in the cooker based on feedback already. It sounds like they have a lot of flexibility here.
DC Rainmaker thanks I would but looks like you need to signup using google Facebook or apple. I only have apple and don’t use two factor authentication so I can’t post there. Oh well. Thanks! Edit - looks like it can be done by changing setting to power up using last mode (mine had changed to start with photo). If you don’t specify the mode with QR code and have camera set to last mode and then scan code while in nightlapse it works. Yay!!!!
anyone know how to get the firmware onto the go pro? I downloaded the zip file, extracted it and copied it across but its doesn't do anything. what am i doing wrong?
Done it. Extract it then I opened the folder with the numbers. Then opened the other folder with the numbers not the Mac folder. Then inside that number folder is an 'update' folder. Transfer just that to the SD card. Then switch on the gopro
I love the content dude! Always a huge help to learn about these new features form someone who can explain them in everyday easy-to-understand terms! Keep it up!!
Hey, do you know if/when they're gonna make improvements to the Streaming part? Currently, you can only use their preset settings (like wide FOV, etc). Do settings from Labs apply to Live streaming? Thanks!
Very nice coverage of the QR Control features. One warning about setting a mode and using the delay start features: they typically shouldn't be used together. One reason is if your default preset doesn't match the mode you just selected, it will boot into the wrong mode, i.e you have set Default Preset to "Last Used Photo", but wanted video. The commands are issued in order, so setting 4k60, happens before telling the camera to sleep and wake at 5am. To ensure the delay start functions boot to the correct mode, it is best to manually set the mode to what you want and have the Default Preset set to "Last Used" or matching the mode you need. Then power down the camera, the slow way :) , so that all the configuration is saved. Then power up the camera for setting the delay start instructions. All this can be solved with QR Codes (simply changing the order of operations), so there will be updates to the QR generators, as there have already been a couple since your video. See qrctrl.com for a shortcut to all the current GoPro Labs QR Code generators.
Well that was easy. The QR generator at gopro.github.io/labs/control/custom/ now allows the Delay Action starts and mode settings to be mixed more reliably. Ver 1.03
It would be cool to slap a QR code on you gear to instantly set up the cam for the activity you do with said gear. Speed sensor for bike. Time stamp code on you car dash. . . . Better the wallpapering all in one place, qr tattoos, lol!
Yup, exactly! It sounds silly, but it's super practical when you think about it. For me, I'm almost always toggling between a Superview mode and a Linear mode. I'm seriously going to just print out two tiny QR codes, and then tape them to my bike. Waaaaay easiser to toggle back and forth this way. It's brilliant.
Hi DC Rainmaker, I have a question not about the Gopro but about a speed sensor. I'm going to buy the Wahoo Roam but I have the Garmin speed sensor 2 and cadence sensor 2. I was wondering just like I can use it to show my power on Zwift I was wondering if I can use my speed sensor to show the Wahoo the amount of watts that I am outputting or do I need a specific power meter ? Thanks
the rest of it - the QR code is a copy of the RunCam features - but you use an APP to do it, which is really handy and better than putting stickers or holding bits of paper.
Really useful video, thanks. Do you know if you can customize the short clips? I work with gopros and need to make 5 seconds videos, but the short clips are 15 and 30 secs. TIA.
Awesome Updates. I just hope they had a feature to automatically name the files based on a time format of ISO Standard 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD-hh-mm-ss) r example 2020-05-31-22-06-01 (May 31, 2020, @ 10:06:01 pm). I always rename my files into this format using Canon Digital Photo Professional Software which has this feature. This is to avoid duplicates in files as I am archiving my personal photos which are more than 12TB and time does not change and does not duplicate. Time will always be accurate (as long as you set your time based on the internet standard). I've been doing archiving for a long time and putting a letter on a file even with dates just complicates things. I found out that professional archivers use ISO8601 Standard to quickly locate specific files. I also rename my folders with letters included in the last section. So for the folders, it's usually like this example: YYYYMMDD - Trip to the beach with family. Then the pictures would be based on timecodes I mentioned earlier. There is a good reason why this format is good and I will add a link below: th-cam.com/video/OdgOYV6pt4k/w-d-xo.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601 I also have tools for renaming like Bulk rename utility, Exif date changer, Photomove 2.5 (to move massive files into specific folders). I like the idea as an option. To me, that’s the strength of this. My guess though is that behind the scenes in the GoPro ecosystem (web/app/camera) there are lots of hidden dependencies for the GoPro file naming structure that probably have to be dealt with first.
@@Dcrainmaker Yes. You are right. At least for now go pro has added a lot of features for this. I had a weird dream last night that the hero 9 will have dual screens like the osmo action cam. Anyways, I will always stick with GoPro since they had replaced my defective Karma Grip years ago. That was terrific customer service. I just wish the next GoPro will still be compatible with the Karma Grip (that's the reason why I didn't buy the hero 8 because it was not compatible and I still need that super steady shot that the karma grip provides). I was actually watching your review on the telesin multi battery charger on GoPro when your reply pop-out. haha.
Indeed, only the Hero 8. And in fact, they've released an Android app already to cover these, as well as an iOS app soon apparently. Will probably do a quick video on those once the iOS variant comes out.
@@Dcrainmaker That's great you still have a US #, someone mentioned you were from Seattle so wasn't sure. Yea we're still here in Seattle area but missing the bike trips and Euro travelling due to covid19. Hopefully soon we'll be back on the road!
some really cool stuff there! now all we need is the ability to download vids from the camera to the comp without needing to have an internet connection! some of the places i go, i'm no where near a wifi connection. also, maybe a setting that will actually allow a person to play their videos on a computer!!! both of my laptops meet the required specs, but neither will play the vids smoothly. as feature packed as the 8 is, i'm really starting to feel like i wasted over 400 bucks on this camera!!!!
Hi . Thanks for sharing. We’ve gone to the featured link to activate the motion detection function but can’t find the template shown in your video referring to motion detection? Amy advice would be greatly appreciated. John Dundee. Scotland
Really interesting stuff. The long chapter would be a great option for what I do with multi camera videos. I with it would work with the Hero5 black. Thank you very much for your time.
I had this qr code feature on my hero 8 I've gone to switch it on today and the feature seems to have vanished off my gopro. I even set up my mobile number on there but that has gone aswell. Does the qr code feature have some sort of expiry date. Do I need to redownload the firmware? Help please.
After installing Labs, I updated the camera with the GoPro app and so lost all of this features. So if I want to keep my camera updated and use GoPro labs have I to repeat the procedure for every update? Or is this just a stand alone version so every time I install it it’s every time the same?
yeah me too... For newer stuff I was looking at the Insta R, but developments like this.. are really cool, especially the timelapse stuff on this GP8 is nice!
Is the videos having incorrect time thing fixed? I don’t know if it’s still a problem but my session 4 has to be set to UTC 0 to give correct time on videos but photos stamp with local time. So if I have my GoPro configured to show correct time on videos and a take a photo it will show local time +6 hours. Kinda annoying.
That looks pretty cool ! A quick question if I may.. I was looking to get a 2nd gopro 7 black to play with some 3D picture ideas I had.. do you know if the field of view on the 8, while using ProTune in stills mode, is identical to the 7 black ? if so then I could have an 8 to use these new features you've shown AND do my experiments in 3D pics by pairing the two camera's. Great channel by the way.. my go to for all this cool stuff :-) keep up the excellent vids..
I'm new to all this hero 8 gopro stuff, where do i find the QR code options ,and all the updates you've described ,is it only in the gopro plus option as i can't find them updates anywhere ,or are these updates only available over there as i'm in the UK
Love the idea of this 👍🏼 best thing Go-Pro have done, just a shame you can’t use it on earlier models of Go-Pro like the 7 or 6 ! Or maybe later on with new software updates !

I was actually watching your review on the telesin multi battery charger on GoPro when your reply pop-out. haha.
I use advanced file renamer to adjust the file name format, it's fully customizable:

It would be interesting to see how much better the stabilisation is with the reel steady software with this extra info compared to the internal output
are you able to enable stabilized night shots in PHOTO TIMELAPSE.
This is useful for walking around in night markets/ night streets etc
very cool stuff, DCR! You need get that pilot license!
Thanks, some day!!!
All of these are really cool. Do you know if the max will do the same?
Thanks for the video, excited about that "Crazy Long Time Lapse" feature. All kinds of possibilities! Are these features only for the GoPro 8?
Indeed, only the Hero 8. And in fact, they've released an Android app already to cover these, as well as an iOS app soon apparently. Will probably do a quick video on those once the iOS variant comes out.
Thanks for the info! Will gopro 8 work while charging? as battery life is under 60 minutes
Definitely liking this 👌 it would be so cool if they could intergrate voice command into those code settings
Very cool. I like the sunset or rise feature. Why I don’t like getting up to grab it. Ha.
I’m all about not waking up for sunrise! 🤣😂
Nice! Just waiting on my Hero8 to come in after the trade-up offer. BTW funny you used the 206 area code, that's Seattle area! /me calls DCR's #... ;)
That’s where I’m from ;) and also the first three digits of my phone. Yup, still have a US number!
You don't just use a card reader? That's how you get the files... Your computer may not handle hvec recording, make sure it's set to h.264 not 5
Hi . Thanks for sharing. We’ve gone to the featured link to activate the motion detection function but can’t find the template shown in your video referring to motion detection? Amy advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! thanks for the Video, love the new features. Hope they make some Permanent .
I like the personalisation - handy if you lose the gp8 !
Really interesting stuff. The long chapter would be a great option for what I do with multi camera videos. I with it would work with the Hero5 black.
Thank you very much for your time.
Hey. These functions will be implemented for GoPro 9 ?
I had this qr code feature on my hero 8 I've gone to switch it on today and the feature seems to have vanished off my gopro. I even set up my mobile number on there but that has gone aswell. Does the qr code feature have some sort of expiry date. Do I need to redownload the firmware? Help please.
very koool all the things you wanted to do but couldn't .. now you can !!!
Any idea of how to setup the start recording feature as you start freediving? Not click it on every dive would be a killer
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Great job as always! Thanks.
Amazing feature! Thanks for the vid!
After installing Labs, I updated the camera with the GoPro app and so lost all of this features. So if I want to keep my camera updated and use GoPro labs have I to repeat the procedure for every update? Or is this just a stand alone version so every time I install it it’s every time the same?
Loved this video thank you!!
Thanks!
Super helpful vid !
Where is R chapters for 12gb files? I’ve got labs but can’t find that.
Oh if only this was available for the 7, I would love the motion trigger for a project I am doing right now.
yeah me too... For newer stuff I was looking at the Insta R, but developments like this.. are really cool, especially the timelapse stuff on this GP8 is nice!
Excellent info... thanks for sharing!
updated the cam, where do i get the app for the phone? i am new to the 8 and qr codes
Im still sitting on getting the gopro hero black 7 for my biking stuff.... I missed out on the sale a week ago..
Go for the 8th dude, it's worth it
I'm new to all this hero 8 gopro stuff, where do i find the QR code options ,and all the updates you've described ,is it only in the gopro plus option as i can't find them updates anywhere ,or are these updates only available over there as i'm in the UK
My download will not update at all, unzipped it dragged it to right place turn on my cam an nothing happens other then a normal load up.
Great Info.
Still no time and date stamp on the osd as Garmin has been doing since Day One?
Great video!
Love the idea of this 👍🏼 best thing Go-Pro have done, just a shame you can’t use it on earlier models of Go-Pro like the 7 or 6 ! Or maybe later on with new software updates !
Hello ! battery level show incorrect after instal labs ! stock 80%
@theloamranger you think you can do some videos on how to really use the new features!!!
