The best way to get bike audio noise is to use something like a zoom audio recorder. Mount it under the seat. The benefit of those is you can control the input gain so It doesn't distort. Can even run a separate mic closer to the back end of the bike. Just wish I could do it on my track bike. But no where to mount it 🙄
They do have a wind foam case for it, that way your gopro still looks nice at the end of the day, it does great with wind, and you can just take it off and put other cases on it also. (I have a gopro hero 8) 15:00 The case also costs like $8 and protects it too.
Foam acts really poorly against fur which is basically transforming the force of the air movement into moving physical hair furs. Foam just has tunnels for the wind to spread away from mic but most of the wind can still get trough in windy conditions. It might work well with just the wind of riding the bike but when there already is heavy wind on top of the mountain the fur is the deal!
I really appreciate it, going out into the woods today, testing out a GravGrip look for a review from me this weekend, I really appreciate all of thes tips and tricks.

The white balance in the upward direction is mostly to compensate for the green that is prevalent in a forested mountain bike setting. If I ride my mountain bike in an urban setting where green is mostly lacking, should I move the white balance more downward, even keeping it in auto?

WHAT ABOUT LOW LIGHT? The Hero 9 is Terrible compared to the Hero 8. I returned my 9 last week. So irritated cause I wanted everything else the camera offers.
I can’t wait to try out those settings! Wish I could actually get the hang of color-correcting though. I’ve rewatched the video 3 or 4 times yet I still can’t manage to get my footage to look right. Plus, the fact that my laptop becomes a potato the instant I run DaVinci Resolve means it’s very difficult to even try to color-correct anything 😅
I hear the HSU Windslayer cover works well for wind noise reduction. It's basically just a foam rubber wrap, similar to a speaker cover. A 2-pack on Amazon is less than $10.
Great video! My question is about Quark Stabilizer $199 vs Horizon Leveling on Go Pro 9 (free) vs Max Lens Mod ($69.99 with GoPro Subscription) Any thoughts? What are the pros and cons of using which for mountain biking. Thank you for all your great work.
Horizon leveling (at least in my experience) is limited not because it doesn't do a good job but because it forces you to shoot in linear mode and if you're wanting to capture POV action with a gopro wide or superview is going to produce a much better shot. I'm hoping the Max Lense Mod will allow us to turn on horizon leveling but provide a wider field of view. Fingers crossed! If it doesn't work as well as hoped I'll be getting the stabilizer too.
If I have an external mic plug in for better audio when riding, do I need to put “ RAW audio “ on high & “ Wind “ off? By the way phenomenal tutorial man bravo. 🤝
Are you still using a gimbal after the introduction of the horizon level function and the max lens mod lens? And if you prefer the gimbal, then why? :) Love your content!
Not sure about the wind noise off suggestion. On a motorbike it sounds shockingly bad when wind reduction is turned off. Even with foam wind blocker shields. Will try the rest of the video settings. 👍
Thank you. The one thing I'm really not liking IS those bright sunlight spots on the ground. They just wash everything away, and like you said, have no detail ... they look like crap to. I can colour tweak in my editing program ... that'll be a bit of a learning curve, cuz you can really mess it up. But this helps alot to get the filming side and create a little less work in "Post". So thank you.
Great video. Taking my 13yr old up to Whistler for his first time tomorrow. This is gonna capture the trip way better than any footage I’ve taken. Super pumped to see the feedback. Love your videos bro.
Thank you. I just go a new GoPro Hero 9 for Father's Day. I NOT a photographer or videographer. I am just learning how to use this thing and most of the settings you show are way over my head ... for now. So I mimicked your settings on my gopro. I will try it out during my next ride :)
From another Canadian, thank you so much for putting these together! Honestly, your first tutorial for GoPro settings was the most useful thing on the internet, and this is a great update to cover the GoPro 9. My aim has been to share what I see as close as possible to reality, and I feel that has been accomplished. Every time I look at the results after a bit of colour editing, it makes me smile 😁 The wind mufflers do work great! Did you get the idea from Stephen Reid? FYI, Red One Music out of Montreal sells the minis at $18CAD which I consider a fair price! Do you have any tips for reducing breathing noise on these cameras? I do a lot of head mounted footage, and I want to capture the nature sounds, but not my own sounds.
I have the same question about breath sounds; I do fishing content with either a chestie or head mount and capture a lot of breathing. I’m going to try the dead cat placement he’s showing and see how that works out.
what about when used on a motorcycle helmet? Will the auto win reduction still not be a good idea? Will the dead cats work as well at motorcycle speeds?
Thanks for a clear explanation and for showing each step straight through. I'm changing my GoPro settings now for a test run later this afternoon. Super cool video and presentation!
Well done Ryan, off my bike from injury but I did get the 9 and started to play with it. Basically the same as the 7 with few changes. I did get some deadcats and will be turning off the wind setting. Looking forward to checking it out. I am really missing my Ripmo and now the weather in BC is changing. All this week will be hero dirt and I can't ride!!
FPS is a critical setting and an explanation of why 24 vs. 60 would have been helpful. As well, in some of the settings, in the woods where you go in and out of sun are what you are primarily discussing but what about when in total sunlight, like on a mb course, what should the settings be e.g. white balance still 5500, ISO Max 3200 or 1600? Thanks
@@user-md3je2qq7x From Hero 7 onwards they use a single clock rate sensor (30Hz) and the camera interpolates other frame rates (24/25 etc) this is why GoPros own launch videos are always in 30fps. It also helps that most TH-cam viewers are using 60hz screens (easy division for the graphics processor).
@Northern Amauta 24fps would be cinematic with a 1/24 or 1/48 shutter speed but that doesn't work well with the HyperSmooth stabilisation that you generally want to be on when capturing a bike video. In addition, the lens used in an action camera won't produce "cinematic" footage as everything is in focus and there is no depth of field. The bad pixely image is due to TH-cam's compression, not the original footage of the camera. @@slinkytrips Any hint where I can find more about your statement? The one that 30Hz is the native clock and everything else is interpolated? Sounds very strange to me.

I stumbled across this video by chance and I changed all the settings per your recommendation. Your side by side example was just too convincing. But here my situation/dilemma for you …I’m using mine as my motorcycle helmet camera. Not for motorcycle content as my TH-cam channel is something completely different. I do plan to use this camera to help with TH-cam content so I’ll keep the settings as you recommended, but when it comes to riding my motorcycle at night should I adjust the ISO lower than the 3200 so I get better low light footage? The reason I ask is if I was unfortunately in some kind of accident I want to have the clearest picture possible. I work a particular shift so when I go to work it’s daytime but when I leave to go home it’s usually around 10 PM to midnight. I use my camera simply because I don’t trust other drivers, so it takes the “he said, she said” out of the equation. Thanks for your video and feedback in advance.
Thank you for sharing your settings. I agree the GoPro Protune Color with auto WB is way out of natural color, especially the skin tone looks too saturated, more reddish. I took a scene where a red sweater looks orange.
there is a third mic under the power button... on the hero9 and the double tape is easily made with a hole puncher, JUST REMBER TO KEEP THE PAPER ON WHEN YOU CUT THE HOLE!!
Thank you!! I am getting horrible flicker in high contrast areas. All the dark areas while skiing, in sun light or flat light, were pulsating and looked like an acid trip. Hopefully this will fix that.
24fps actually IS pretty close to what our eyes see, I mean its not like you can compare cameras to eyes anyway since "we dont see in fps" but IF you do.. 24/25 is the way to go, especially with the motionblur it produces if you got the shutterspeed right.

Enjoyed the video. So you don't use an ND filters or try to slow your shutter speed down to 2X framerate? Is that because it can negatively impact stabilisation and you prefer stability to motion blur?

Fantastic, similar settings to what we use on our 9, except wind noise. Ours will now be turned off! What are your thoughts on the foam wind stoppers (cover whole camera) you get off eBay?
Question: What would you suggest for settings when doing indoor recording, on sticks, using adjustable w/b LED studio lighting? I can control my w/b from my lights, dimming both warm and cold LEDs to whatever I prefer. I turn off all stab during sticks recording, simply because there's no need for the camera to do unnecessary work. From my stills work, I know to turn off IS within my Canon lenses, so I do the same with this. So back to the question...how would you set for indoor work? Thanks!
ND Filters help Massively -im just finding that out myself after buyimg a drone and searching for GoPro filters after seeing how they massively impact the ddi mini 4 pro drone. even just a UV filter helps a go prop especially in artificial light. for people using a gopro for content in a room. So, the question is: should I still turn off wind reduction if I don't want the camera to look like a beared punk? I will not usually use it at high speeds, mostly walking.

Can even run a separate mic closer to the back end of the bike. Just wish I could do it on my track bike. But no where to mount it 🙄
idiot, that's why he has the dead cat.
I just watched this today and adjusted my settings and it was SOOOOO much better. Thanks for the great tips!
They do have a wind foam case for it, that way your gopro still looks nice at the end of the day, it does great with wind, and you can just take it off and put other cases on it also. (I have a gopro hero 8) 15:00
The case also costs like $8 and protects it too.
Send me a link to the wind case please !! I had one for my GoPro Hero 6 and it worked really well
@@theDecendalorian thanks !! They also now do one for Hero 9 👍🏻👍🏻
I really appreciate it, going out into the woods today, testing out a GravGrip look for a review from me this weekend, I really appreciate all of thes tips and tricks.
I'm surprised how noticeable the audio change was in your settings and the factory ones! Were you using the separate Wav file that the raw audio creates?
he literally says to use the raw audio file. lol
@@BryanMiraflor Where?
12:59
@@nathanmunro2082 He said that he never messes around with the separate audio file, instead he just turns it to high so the quality of the audio will be better in general .
@@Brenzle This is something lot of people get confused on with RAW audio.
Turning RAW audio on does not alter the audio on the video file, it creates a separate audio file next to the video file. Depending on what you set RAW to, it’ll either do zero processing to the audio in the 2nd file, or give you a slightly less (over) processed result. You’ll have to sync the audio track in post, which is why I normally don’t recommend it for first timers.
Holy crap! Was watching for GoPro setting tips and stayed for the insane trail biking speed footage!!!
Thanks for the settings advice! You ever tried using a polarizer with the gopro? I do a lot of skiing/fishing and in both situations the polarizer is a life saver to reduce glare and get my highs/lows looking good.
The white balance in the upward direction is mostly to compensate for the green that is prevalent in a forested mountain bike setting. If I ride my mountain bike in an urban setting where green is mostly lacking, should I move the white balance more downward, even keeping it in auto?
Man I thought having to look out for snakes was bad. I'm glad we don't have bears in Australia!
Well, Australia has some pretty deadly snakes, though. Gorgeous country you live in.
Just got lookout for Drop Bears! Meanest of them all.
@@chameleonpogono it is pretty great, I gotta say
But the trail situation could get some more... help? In sa the trails are pretty average. Need more trails or less trails but bike park quality cmon scomo
@@josiahgolding7826 it does seem like we're on the cusp of that. A lot of small towns have realised the tourism potential and everyone wants to be the next Derby.
Wow! What a difference, I recently purchased a GoPro 10, and I took some video and photos in Banff plus two days a go my back yard and was not happy with the out come on both with the newest camera, went on Utube and found your channel, changed the settings and the greens grass and blue sky is unbelievable, thanks for the settings and I’m a subscriber now 😊
Excellent job! Great presentation skills - going to give a go out in my garden-
You’re my hero dude! I bought this GoPro for trail riding (dirtbike single track) and was underwhelmed by the factory quality. She’s all set and ready for the snow to melt now! Great vid!

Yup
WHAT ABOUT LOW LIGHT? The Hero 9 is
Terrible compared to the Hero 8. I returned my 9 last week. So irritated cause I wanted everything else the camera offers.
What about the HyperSmooth 3.0 with horizon leveling vs the single axis gimbal? Would be interested to see if the gimbal made any difference.
I second that! Keen to know if it's worth buying the gimbal
You can only get horizon leveling in linear mode, which crops the frame too much for MTB.
@@huntstyle I think that is why a lot of people have been talking about and showing it with the max lens mod.
I use a foam sock for my Hero 7, That works better as the mics are in awkward places. I like the settings you suggest though!
@@jamaliciousben the max lens mod keeps you locked at only 2.7K
If I have an external mic plug in for better audio when riding, do I need to put “ RAW audio “ on high & “ Wind “ off?
By the way phenomenal tutorial man bravo. 🤝
7:27 "who wants to spend all day watching a youtube video". 7 and a half minutes in and still havent gotten to the point of the video -_-
7 minutes out of 1440 in a day. Chill
@Connor Gaughan wtf dude go smoke a doubie
Just got my first go pro a Hero 7. Can't wait to play with the settings now and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help
Dude your voice sounds like Alex Honnold’s, crazy! Thanks for the vid!
These videos are great! They finally gave me the confidence to start making my own videos. Keep them coming!!!
Best of luck!
@@Kowo-tb7rb Thank you!
Welcome to the gang!
On the Trail MTB thank you! Glad to be apart of it
Great video. Taking my 13yr old up to Whistler for his first time tomorrow. This is gonna capture the trip way better than any footage I’ve taken.
Super pumped to see the feedback. Love your videos bro.
I much prefer higher framerates for action, such as this. 60 fps is the go to for me.
Every time I look at the results after a bit of colour editing, it makes me smile 😁
The wind mufflers do work great!
Dead cats and GoPro wind slayers
I built your L ramp btw thanks for the plans 🤙🏻
I built one a few months ago too! So awesome
Thanks for a clear explanation and for showing each step straight through. I'm changing my GoPro settings now for a test run later this afternoon. Super cool video and presentation!
Thank you for that my GoPro footage looks a lot better since I changed it
Well done Ryan, off my bike from injury but I did get the 9 and started to play with it. Basically the same as the 7 with few changes. I did get some deadcats and will be turning off the wind setting. Looking forward to checking it out. I am really missing my Ripmo and now the weather in BC is changing. All this week will be hero dirt and I can't ride!!
Thanks for the setup. Looks like not much has changed from the 8. We love the footage we've been getting with your settings. Thanks.
Thanks
Those 24fps on a bike video are far from being "cinematic" and closer to a headache due to all the bad pixely image
What do you use ?
@@slinkytrips thanks for the info
@Northern Amauta
24fps would be cinematic with a 1/24 or 1/48 shutter speed but that doesn't work well with the HyperSmooth stabilisation that you generally want to be on when capturing a bike video.
@@brother-ql I believe the pixely and artifacted footage is due to the TH-cam video using the AVC codec. @exXplode2 Do you know why this video doesn't utilize the VP9 codec even though its uploaded in 4K?
Great video. I would love a video on how to get crispy clear uploads. Currently uploading in 4k from either Resolve or Adobe Rush and final quality on TH-cam isn't great. Interested to see how you get such amazing uploads.
My bike channel works good because of you, I owe you a beer mate!

@@TheLoamRangerCould you just give a quick tip how to setup gopro for winter? Ski/Snowboard pow footage for open mountains area (90% white color) and for the forest ride?

Yes, I wanted to write a comment to update that video. Guess you read my mind.
there is a third mic under the power button... on the hero9
and the double tape is easily made with a hole puncher, JUST REMBER TO KEEP THE PAPER ON WHEN YOU CUT THE HOLE!!
Thank you!! I am getting horrible flicker in high contrast areas. All the dark areas while skiing, in sun light or flat light, were pulsating and looked like an acid trip. Hopefully this will fix that.
This dude: i wanna mimic real life
Also this dude: *uses 24 fps
24fps actually IS pretty close to what our eyes see, I mean its not like you can compare cameras to eyes anyway since "we dont see in fps" but IF you do.. 24/25 is the way to go, especially with the motionblur it produces if you got the shutterspeed right.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this video Ryan. I am not camera savvy but do want my new 9 to look and sound it's best. Cheers!

The “wind” function may be more important for quadcopter usage. Thanks for the tip. Can’t wait to try them.
Your settings have really helped me. Thank you for posting an update as the cameras have been updated
Thanks for the tips. I'm a first time GoPro user and I'm wanting to use it on my motorcycle.
I'm not to happy about putting the dead cats on it but, its got to be better than the wind noise issue I've been dealing with so far.
Thanks again for the tips on the settings.
If you're at a ski resort and surrounded by snow... Would you still want the White balance at 5500? Or would that be the one time you'd want it less?
There's differences in the menu. *Because of the Firmware Update?*
Mine doesn't say *Hypersmooth 3.0 Boost* --- it says *Max Hypersmooth [ON]*

Yah fookin' nailed it, dude! The Loam Ranger, da game changer. Thank you!! Any videos on locked exposure settings?
Great video; exactly why I subbed.
I will note that if you encode your videos using VidCoder/Handbrake, it seems to remove the GoPro grading and change the output video to the 'flat' profile. This can serve as a workaround for those of us that mistakenly bought a Silver on the cheap.
Am i right in assuming these settings will work just as good for Fpv freestyle and flying..🤔
This may very well be the most useful video I've watched in months
Thank you! I film quite often footage at the motocross track and I agree the shadows and audio is trash. I cant wait to try out my new custom setup. Thank you
Enjoyed the video. So you don't use an ND filters or try to slow your shutter speed down to 2X framerate? Is that because it can negatively impact stabilisation and you prefer stability to motion blur?
I’ve just changed my settings in activity mode to yours will give it a try here in uk over weekend
Thanks mate. Another good Vid..
If you think those trails are slippery try riding the hills in Perth, Western Australia during the summer..... Riding on ball bearings 8-)
( graining is significantly reduced)
So, the question is: should I still turn off wind reduction if I don't want the camera to look like a beared punk? I will not usually use it at high speeds, mostly walking.
Tired the settings and I am sure they are good. But I have a pint tint on my videos. I’m using Luma and a GoPro 4 Black. 2 days trying to clean it up. Still love your videos.
Than you sir, I look forward to filming now that I have made these changes.

Great explanation of settings change. Picking up my Hero 8 Black tomorrow and will make the necessary changes. I am not a MTBr but ride gravel and rails to trails...certainly not the jaw jarring you do. I assume these settings will work well for this type of biking too?
I'll try out your settings today. I tried the hero 9 yesterday and everything was white and just blown out by the bright sunlight. I ordered nd filters but they're not here yet. Great video. Thanks for the advice.
can you please share more details on how you use the go pro in various sports? like ski, water, etc?
Can you do a video like this for the insta360 One R if you still have/use that camera?
awesome thanks, also setting the white balance to a fixed position will prevent any flickering (from the auto setting changing the white balance every time) so if you have set it to 5500k you will be able to change it in premiere.
Subbed for a fellow Canadian. Great work and I"m waiting for Hero 8 Black to arrive. Was going to take it boarding this year, but after my fall, my season might be done. Can't wait for the summer though when we can hopefully all be normal again!
I just picked up a Hero10, charging the battery now, once that's done I'm going upload your settings and go for a ride ... tomorrow. Thanks!
How can you get good motion blur when using auto for the shutter speed? What about using ND filters and manually setting it?
