    I feel like the problem is, that the umpires are too scared to admit that they made a mistake. It's like when you're being sued and your lawyer tells you not to admit to any crimes lol but also, bwf should allow for instant video review for the umpire with referees like in soccer, everyone makes mistakes, we're human.

    • @ivankjt
      @ivankjt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      In the BWF handbook for umpires, it is stated that once a call has been made, the umpire HAS to stand by their decision. Admitting a mistake after a call has been made is not a good look for BWF / the umpire so this is why we never see umpires do this. I agree with what you said, the solution to this is to enforce slow-mo video reviews with the referee and for the overturn of an umpire's decision to be allowed whenever a wrong call is made.

    • @themasterstringer
      @themasterstringer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@ivankjt yea it's not the umpires, some rules needs to be updated and/or amended. I remember seeing umpire giving a yellow card to a player after they just finished a super long rally and both players were still very much out of breath. Last few weeks I was at a tournament, for one match the receiver had his hand up so the server waited, and the umpire faulted the server for delaying to serve, everyone was face palming so hard lol. There needs to be some flexibilities built-in to the rules

If the decision could be overruled with a video replay in these scenarios it would prevent a lot of problems such as false faults.

    There are lots of types of the error made by the umpires in fact, and most of them are caused by the 'eye-judge': they won't use the replay of the point to help, or won't even use any high tech like radar in the case of 'service too high'. I hope this series will be continued which includes most of the ridiculuous judges by the umpires or the line judge!

    • @Schmats1
      @Schmats1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason those kinds of things aren't used (which is a bit weird but I kinda understand) is that because badminton is such a worldwide sport, expecting every court to have loads of advanced gimmicks is just not logistically possible and so the rulebook is adapted to that.

    • @adrianwong69

So justifying a change in the rulebook would take a lot more.

When you take the ability of judges to mess up out of it, then there's no need to have horrible experiences because you know that it's all about you and the persons in front of you. When you leave it up to someone else, they're bound to make bad and, in some cases, corrupt calls for the benefit of themselves over the players.

    Fix would seem to be to have all the players that have issues with the umpiring immediately send a complaint off to the governing body after the match. And then have those complaints reviewed every 3 months or so in a transparent manner that the public can look in where the umpires have to defend their calls. Some might be bad calls, some just might be errors due to being tired and what not, but there will be some that just cannot be defended. Have a X strikes and you are out rule where they get disbarred from judging competitions if they are found to have done a poor job. And if a certain nation/group consistently seem to be giving biased calls have measures in place to limit the number of umpires that nation/group can nominate for international competitions. The most important factor being the public should be able to review the 'judging' of the umpire calls just as easily they can watch the match the call took place in.

      Probably not worth the effort. Badminton umpires are assessed at various stages by assessors. For semi finals and finals the referee will also usually choose umpires, looking at their performance. Split second decisions at the net are often very difficult - remember that you actually see only about 2 degrees at any one instant, not the 180 degree illusion. Any umpire who consistently favoured one country or player would soon get reported, and not selected.

    What Viktor did in the last clip should be more commonplace. I'm not a big fan of Leverdez but his opponent clearly knew the shuttle was out, he should have served into the net out of respect.

    • @MrJ4ckie

      The wild thing about the Leverdez call is that 3 people should have called the shuttle out - both line judges and the umpire. It was clearly out, so clear that any umpire worth their salt should have seen it. It was also the easiest kind of shot to call, not moving fast across the line. It's right up there with some of the most ridiculous calls in the history of the sport imop. Similar to the one in the 2008 Korea Open where Lin Dan got absolutely enraged (and rightfully so, minus the whole racket throwing and wanting to fight part).

    Number 6, SYQ vs VA
    Personally don't think the umpire was wrong. Rules are that racket can cross the net, provided the shuttle is on your side of the court.
    VA returned SYQs kill at the front, but from the replay, it can be seen that VAs racquet goes under the net while the shuttle is still in play when he returns that kill. Ie, his racket crossed the net while the shuttle was in SYQs side of the court. Hence a fault.
    I'm assuming this is the case since crossing the net can be either be your racket going above or under. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. And also, can't be entirely sure why the umpire faulted VA since the audio is inaudible. But assuming I'm right about the rules regarding the racket crossing the net, that's the only justifiable reason I can see how the umpire faulted VA.

    • @pauldodd2120
      @pauldodd2120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It's only a fault if any part of your racket protrudes over the next before you hit the shuttle on your side. If your racket is under the net, It's only a fault if it impedes the opponent. Otherwise, if you were to throw your racket out the court on purpose trying to hit someone, then you would get a red card and probably the referee would be called to see if you should be disqualified.
