- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 ก.ย. 2024
- I recently promised I was going to do The Phaal Challenge... and have a found the place to do it.
I am at the Akash, an Indian restaurant in Portsmouth that I used to frequent in my university days.
But not content with making me a Phall, they are adding even more chillis - it's a Phaal Plus, a Super Phaal!! It's the hottest curry I have ever faced... oh my God !
Owner Faz had his own TH-cam channel where you can check all of his receipes too - / @cheffaz9543

I did promise I would do the Phaal Challenge - well I actually ended up facing a Phaal Plus Challenge - but how did I get on?
What did you think about the restaurant as a whole? The rest of the menu was really tasty!!
The decoration 8 out of 10
Apparently the phal challenge started in brick lane New York as a dare to see who could eat the most spice.
@@robsmith6281 oh I didn’t know that
@@robsmith6281I didn’t know that thanks
It's about time... Great video mate. You're much less of a wimp than I am
Ha ha - couldn't find a phaal in France mate 😂
@@GaryEats come on Gary!! Do the same challenge in Portsmouth and I’ll join you for the laugh 😂
Ha ha Gary 😂.
I think we prefer the milder currys Gary 😊👍
🤣🤣🤣
Cant beat the Akash when im down Pompey working. Im from Newcastle but been going there for 15 years on and off through work . George and his sons are great and very welcoming they know me as ' CHAMPION ' because whenever I went it I would end my sentences with champion 😂
Ha ha - that's brilliant! Faz was working when I went, he's a top guy. Great Indian restaurant, long may it stay in the family and keep knocking out such good food !
@@GreenoEats yeah Faz is a good lad keep up the good work with your videos all the best 👍
Proper Geordie and Lancastrian phrase is Champion. ... How are you doing Marty..?
@@martyjago8636we miss you champion.
@@cheffaz9543 I'll see you soon mate 👍
The food looks absolutely amazing. Well done to the chefs.
The restaurant did you proud, I really don’t know how you did that last meal. lol
Great job with the video.
Best

Thanks - needed some fortitude to get the phaal completed that's for sure!
Great video Greeno, you should work with Gary again
I am sure we will get together at some point - all great movie franchises have at least a trilogy don't they !!
@@GreenoEats Bad Boys II!!!
@@gusyonok9950 ha ha - well and some less good franchises too
Except without anything greater than a kiddie Korma 😝
That made me sweat just watching you eat it!!! Did all look very nice food though
This was in my feed because of Gary's video.
THE AKASH!! No way, my local!! Haven't dined in for ages but had a takeaway only 3 days ago.
Fabulous place and fabulous staff. Faz and Jaf are superstars, taking over the reigns from their dear Dad George, who himself is still a legend.
Can't fault the place, best Indian in town bar none 🙂
(Akash - this is Smurf... ello!!)
When I was there some of the family came in, I got to meet Faz’s uncle, quite the character!
Hi Greeno, I think I would be stuffed eating only the starter and the second, the portion sizes were enormous! 😅 It looks and sounds absolutely wonderful, so sure I would love it. When it comes to the Phaal I think it would have killed me, I am like Gary when it comes to spice, I can tolerate a bit of spice but nothing like a Phaal. Then my colleagues at the A&E would have to treat me afterwards. I am really impressed with your effort eating that Phaal, mate! Respect! 🫡
I had a great takeaway bag to bring home :-) As for the Phaal - it was a challenge, but my digestive system is seemingly made of relatively stern stuff, no A+E for me :-)
They know a review is being filmed, i bet them portions aren't the same size for everyone else.
@@ShirleyT-Keela I asked them to give me exactly what any other customer would receive, so that it gave a fair representation of their restaurant
The food looked lovely
The kitchen looked a place that is well used ,not just sterile and cooking by numbers.
The food portions and pricing looked spot on
The family should be rightly proud of 50 years in business.
Agree with all of that 100%
Almost 50k in views and so many new subscribers. I’m so pleased for you Greeno, well deserved my friend. I’m looking forward to Gary responding with his Phaal++ challenge. I know he wants to, he just hasn’t admitted it to himself yet. BTW I love my heat and extra spice but that would have killed me. I tip my hat to you.
Thanks, the channel is progressing very nicely at the moment - I am glad that people are finding it and (in the main) enjoying it !
I stumbled across your channel tonight and what a great video I've just watched. Nice one! and I'm looking forward catching up. More power to your elbow.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video !!
Its the next day you will need the help! I had a phaal once - never again, it was like giving birth to enriched uranium the following morning.
The mixed kebab looked pretty good as did the food overhaul - much better curry than the one Gary went to last week.
Good work!
It was a great meal - even if the "dessert" was a little fiery !!
😂😂😂
On the plus side, you don't have to turn on the toilet light.
Lmfao 😂😂😂😂 x 10. My mate once ordered a phal in his complete ignorance of Curry's. Lol. About a spoon in he said try this it's chuffing hot.... We still laugh about it 26 years on.
You mention in your Video about 'Gary Eats' and his catastrophic introduction to Curry !!! Well, Greeno, it has to be said, you leave Gary Eats in the shade - and quite rightly so !!! Bravo Greeno - keep up the great work with your very authentic Video Reviews !!!
Thanks for the kind words Paul, much appreciated!
Wow I was cheering you on at the end. Well done.
Ha ha, thank you!
👏👏👏👏♥️ Fair play Greeno, Fair play!
I tried a chicken vindaloo at our local pubs curry night back in the late 80s. Wow scarred me for life, had to mop my face with a slice of bread!😂
Korma or Butter chicken from then on for me!
You are a superhero!👍♥️
Not sure what scenario this talent would be useful in the superhero world though!!
@@GreenoEats oh I don’t know!!🤔
Im "Basingstoke " up the road from Portsmouth = my home in the 70s,80s,90s .
If you were in a pub in town - you ended up at a indian restaurant. Kickout out of the pubs 11pm plus a few later back then . Indian restaurant served booze to 2am ....
We had a local - you turned up and met the sane drunks every week . We had a special table - we called the "captains table " . Age ranges on the tabke were 18 years ( me and my friends in the 90s ) and 70s plus year s old . We just met the old timers in the restaurant every week when in town .
Everyone guy in the restaurant thought they could handle "Hot" and ordered the hottest they could get . Most were crying half way through -
We just Jalfrazia for the hot our hot dishes and got the waiters to put on extra "birdseye" chilies ( the little green ones )
It wasnt until 2000 ish did i eat my first vindaloo ...i didnt enjoy it at all .
We heard about the naga and phaal but you had to ask them to cook it . I do like hot but in my old age - im not as "jack the lad " as the 90s with mates ( they were great times ) .
I moved to Buckinghamshire around 2000 and all the indians went "high-end" ...serving monk fish , salmon curries etc still lovely food .
But as per video - i like old skool restaurants = elephants everywhere , waterfall light pictures , booth seating etc
I dont mind cobra but prefer kingfisher - maybe a dodgy house white or red and a irish coffee to end .
Its a brilliant nightout - i do miss the 90s - having friends who didnt have responsibilities was why it was so good
That sounds like it was a great place!!
Good to see this restaurant challenge and hear about your time at University of Portsmouth in the 1990s. I was also around at this time.
Probably studying harder than I did 🤣
@@GreenoEats We had some great times on Albert Road and had a few good currys as well!
Favorite line: "It's not JUST an unpleasant bowl of chili..."
My understanding of how it MIGHT work by adding the other types of chile - I think that really they hit different parts of the palate. So you're not necessarily making it that much hotter at a certain point, but you're tormenting more of your taste buds with the heat you're applying. Of course, you ate The Entire Bowl, so ... where do we send flowers?
As far as relief, yes, water is not effective, since it just basically spreads the offending agents around. The heat from chiles is carried in oil, which water doesn't penetrate. Other oils can help (hence the dairy), and sugar seems to counteract some of the effects. I've also heard that the Russian Cure (straight cold vodka) works wonders to remove the pain, which would make sense because alcohol will cut oil. However, after Eating The Entire Bowl of heat, you'd probably end up in a sodden puddle on the floor if you resorted to the vodka, thus making it difficult to return to the restaurant. Which would suck, because that place looks fabulous, and the people seem wonderful.
Maybe on a more normal future outing with just a basically hot curry, you could test the curative effects of a mango Lassi laced with a tot of either rum or vodka (I've had both in Lassi and they've been very nice). But Mrs Greeno should drive. 😅
Ooh, a boozy lassi sounds just the ticket !! Thanks for the info about how the chillis work - very interesting.
Will be visiting The Akash very soon! Fair play to you, I was sweating by the end of the video just watching you lol!!! Hope you made a speedy recovery!!!
After an interesting following morning all was well 🤣
I have impressed quite a few Indian co-workers in an attempt to make them feel at home, by eating Vindaloos and Phaals, but you have my respect! Phaal++ Impressive!
Why thank you !
Well done ! Hope the following days you had wasnt to painful on the toilet roll budget ??
Hi @GreenoEats, loved this video! Hats off to you for not only accepting the challenge but smashing it as well! Only the best people went to Uni in Portsmouth, I was a few years ahead of you and graduated in 1989 (when it was still Portsmouth Polytechnic).
I had a great time at Pompey - it was a good town to spend a few university years!! Glad you enjoyed the video !
You did well!!! You didn't even look like you were struggling. Hardcore 😅❤️
Looks can be deceiving !
That was epic Greeno!!!!! We were cheering you on here!!! Put Gary to shame you did 😊😂
Ha ha, thanks ! Gary would like it at this restaurant though, I hear they do a lovely korma ha ha!!
Well done mate! Nothing like a quality Phaal if you can find one these days. Bet your arse was like a Japanese Flag the next morning.
I had a few interesting hours the following morning, but nothing I couldn't handle lol!
Well done Greeno, the Macmaster cant even eat a Korma, I love hot and spicy food but I dont think I could do a phaal.
It was pretty intense!
Hi Greeno, since your collaboration with Gary recently, I was curious to see if & when you would try a phaal. The food at this restaurant looked excellent! Glad it was as good as you remember it from many years ago. The phaal cooking away in the kitchen looked like lava in a pan!! I could never do it,... It would be the death of me. Good on you for trying it... A bowl of pain! But you did very, very well. 😅🙏
I am a man of my word :-)
@@GreenoEats 💯
I find to enjoy very hot curries, let them cool down to the point the physical heat is cooling compared to the chilli. This is why I enjoy left over vindaloo the next morning, more than when it's at serving temperature.
I should have left this longer then, it was boiling!
Fair play! This would kill me 😂
Just about still alive to tell the tale !
First time viewer, great video. I was at Uni in Pompey 94-97 so no doubt passed each other unknowingly. Used to love The Akash or a Chicken Tikka Naan from Bombay Express on the walk home. Happy days 👍🏼
Undoubtedly our paths will have crossed somehow, I was around 93-97. For me it was Akash or Kens Kebabs, or a cheap meal and a pint on a Tuesday at the Wine Vaults!!
Superb food, lovely staff beautiful restaurant top notch well done Greeno
Great video cheers Jonathan
Thanks Jonathan - glad you enjoyed it - I had a great time at Akash !
I love a Phall - and they never taste the same when tried in different restaurants. Full of flavour.
It did surprise me that I could still pick out flavours with the level of chilli in there
Just to let you know Greeno if we don't see you for a couple of days, I would fully understand 😂 Fab review, what a great place, and I would be very surprised if you don't get at least fifty more subscribers. Thoroughly enjoyable, much respect 👏👏😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it ! In spite of the slight discomfort in eating the phaal, I really enjoyed making the video !
You're brave mate! That phaal looked super hot and my god it was a deep bowl of. Fair play lad!
no point playing around - go big or go home (in fairness there were points where go home looked a decent option!)
That starter would feed a family for a week😂.constructive criticism but music waaay over the top .😊
Huge wasn't it - so good though !
Agreed, the music wasn't appropriate at all.
Really spoiled the video.
Fair play to you for even trying it, phal is no joke. All in all a solid effort and the food looks amazing
Great restauraant all round, the food is tasty and prepared with love and tradition. Lovely people too.
Hi Greeno, great effort on the phaal, Bravo! We recently visited family in Collumpton, Devon and ate at a restaurant called-Noor Sitara. Well worth a try and not for from Dorset.
Thanks for the tip !
Well done. Greeno. Hope your gut was OK. A trip down memory lane for you. Was lovely to see. The fact the the same family run the place, was the icing on the cake. Great stuff.❤
Glad you enjoyed it - I have come through relatively unscathed!
I am in my 70's and i used to have very hot curries without a problem and a Phaal curry was not a item that you could get. These days i won't have anything above a medium Hababero level heat as my tolerance is shot to ribbons.I don't envy you eating a Phaal as i could not do it even at my height of hot curries. The rest of the food looked fairly good.Great review again
So you're saying I should enjoy the spice while I can then? Well, maybe not quite that level of spice !
I was the same in terms of spice tolerance but I've recently got back into chilli sauces as an alternative to mayo, as I was getting a bit fat 🤣 I think I can handle a bit more spice again now as a result. I did have a phaal once in Brum
Well done Greeno I knew you could do it! It all looked delicious! Thanks xx
All in a day's work 😂
Well done Greeno. Braver man than me. Congrats on the 12k too.
Braver? Or just dafter??
Brave man, amazing, well done!
Brave? Or stupid?? ha ha
Well done there Greeno. It is a different style review today and the extra bits are great. It is great to know the places you ate at 30+ years ago have stood the test of time and that can only be down to the restaurant offering excellent value, great flavour and wonderful ambiance. Will you be doing a video with BeardMeetsFood next ?? hahaha (only joking) That would be a funny crossover.
It was nice to get a little extra access, the team at Akash were very accomodating. Means a bit of a longer video, especially with doing another curry after the first one, but I think it's worth it !!
Well played!
Thanks - I am still hear to tell the tale!
That Phaal is the same colour going down as it is coming out the next morning lol. Well done, I would have drank six pints of lager with that!
Ha ha !!
Amazing Greeno😮 well done for this challenge!! Really impressed.. I was sweating just watching you🤣
Great review 👍👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it !
Welcome back to Portsmouth (my hometown!)
The Akash has preserved its reputation over the years but there's some interesting competition - the city has grown up a bit in recent years and much more interesting range of restaurants and food.
I normally don't get much further than Gunwharf Quays - so it was nice to have a mooch around my old stomping grounds!!
I always welcome recommendations, so if there is anything I really should be trying let me know!!
@@danlacey3676 used to love the Akash, because it used to take reservations after 2am when the clubs finished.
@@GreenoEats I'll have a think - with great power comes great responsibility !
Well done for doing the Phaal challenge and you actually ate it all! Food looked amazing. Thanks for a really entertaining review 👍🙌
Glad you enjoyed it !!
Hope the bog rolls went in the fridge for later on lol !! A pint of Gaviscon on standby, well done Greeno for doing that challenge. I like a naga , that's about as hot as I can handle it.
Ha ha, the freezer !
Great review Greeno. That starter was a belly filler on it's own! The main looked like it was served by people who love what they do and it looked top level.
I'm one of the weirdos who really love a phal. They are not too hot to me. Had much hotter than phal at some places over the years after boasting and a few beers! (to my silliness). Also had a few good discounts for surprising staff with eating the heat over the years, lol....If you are working up the hot curries, remember this....
It's food. Drink a lassi with it slowly, not lager or water. Tell yourself you can do it. Ask for naga for extra flavour over the 'raw' chilli heat. Mind over matter.
Oh yeah, finally, don't eat a phal when it is steaming hot, it enhances the heat.
Finally, if you have got a cold, covid or similar....this blasts it away 😃😃😃😃
Yes, mind over matter is right - and as for clearing the system of bugs, after an interesting 12 hours or so I felt on top of the world!
I’m watching this in the hotel opposite Marlboro fish and chips in Weymouth. Obviously i had some. Well done on this boys.
Nice! Did you try the battered mackerel ?
@@GreenoEats sadly not. But I'm moving here soon so I thought I'd save it.

Fair play to you on that phall Greeno! In my younger days, I used to get through three of them every week - 2 takeaways and a proper sit down at the weekend with the other half.
Blimey - you must have been made of strong stuff!
Great video, well done on the challenge. Subbed and liked
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I believe phaal is really a British-Indian dish. You rarely see it on Indian menus in the US.
Probably so, just a curry designed for the male bravado!
I think I'd have waited for it to be nearly cold.
Just delaying the inevitable!
A proper food reviewer mate telling us every element of your dining experience excellent
Glad you enjoyed it - to be honest I should have done less describing - the video's nearly 34 mins long - it's like a Scorcese food review !!!

Epic effort Greeno. Our rugby club at Uni was right near the curry mile in Brick Lane. Our pre-season curry was Phaal for first years, Vindaloo for second years and only third years plus got a free choice. I'm still traumatized... You finished which I couldn't do 20+ years ago!
Ha ha - but would you try it again now? I know how rugby lads are !!!
This is the closest anyone has got to ordering a Phaal to someone I know. They have their Phaal extra, extra hot with extra Naga chillies. The intensity of the spice and the heat doesn’t touch them xx
It touched me !!! ha ha
What did you do at uni?
Vindaloo is my go to, and I often have it made hotter, but never had a phaal. How much hotter is it?
My degree says "Economics" although as to what I did at uni, it was probably minimal work and plenty of time in local hostelries!
You smashed that mate. Made it look easy

Impressive on all levels. The food was beauty on a plate, so fresh looking and made with care and attention. That was so nice they let you into the kitchen as well, that's an honour. I don't know how you did that phaal and all of it to boot, fair play to you, glad I didn't have to do it lol. Great video, and wonderful restaurant, great they kept it in the family using the traditional cooking methods.
Exactly my kind of place - a family business that the current owners have grown up in, and are already training the next generation. Passionate and with a real pride about what they do.
Hiya. As a huge fan of hot dishes, I'd like to share a trick with you. You shouldn't "ease into" a hot dish, you should plunge into it with gusto, take it head on. Then you will not only bear the heat, but also relish it, fully enjoy it.
I'll bear that in mind next time !!
Wow I salute you Sir for virtually finishing the Phaal. I tried some many moons ago that a friend have ordered at I only dipped a bit of naan in it and it blew my head off. I'm more of a madras guy myself 😂. Well done 👍🏻

About 25 years ago i worked with a Bangladeshi guy and he told me the the fahl is actually not meant to be hot originally. It was just a fairly hot as in madras hot fish curry.
Just invented to appease the macho English guys who wanted to prove they were tough enough to eat something hotter than vindaloo !!
