AMG is not AMG anymore, its AMG performance. back then its all about taking a normal car and make it able to kill you by putting monstrous v8 motors and aerodynamic parts on the cars. they basically were a street racing tuner for mercedes up until around 2015/16. after european law changed around that time, enviromental restrictions got much tighter for car manufacturers. they couldnt produce overly loud cars anymore and also had to downsize the engines because of the co2 emissions and fuel consumption. these days its all about optimizing the cars and not making them german muscle cars. the decision to make a class amgs and thit like that is all mercedes themselves because since they merged with amg, amg is not a tuner anymore, its just like audi s or bmw m power producing in company optimized sports cars. also due to mass production the prices they have to pay to be able to sell these cars at the european market are insane. if you produce small series or prototypes like harley you can do wild shit, amg is selling huge amounts of cars tho because it makes much more money. if you want the „real“ amg spirit and dont gibe a fuck about money these days check our brabus or mansory.

It's a shame that these are dying out because they sound amazing and are so fun to drive.
I think only Porsche is saved nowadays, as the other German automakers like Audi, Mercedes and especially BMW are just a shadow of what they were in the past, creating cars that are very expensive for what they are worth with soulless designs and dubious build quality.
Porsche also has a firm stance on making true performance cars no matter what happens in the world. They are working on synthetic carbon neutral fuel. Id rather buy a used 911 or 718 instead of any BMW or Mercedes.

This happens when a company gets bought and becomes part of Big Corporate. Their original philosophy becomes secondary to the political and financial interest of Daimler-Benz. The AMG badge will retain its value and prestige for a little while, but eventually it will become meaningless and thus worthless.

I'm a big fan of the m112k/m113k era of AMG. Older models were special but simply lacked some reliability and power. 355hp out of the NA 5.5 and supercharged 3.2 was repectable. 500 hp out of the m113k was insane for 2003. E55s are still incredibly reliable for around 15k.
Most performance badges have been diluted these days, with badges such as 's-line' and basically every bmw other than base having some sort of M badge. Everyone wants to feel special but no one actually wants to pay for meaningful increases in performance.

You are forgetting one thing - This decision was made when Mercedes announced the 2017 A Sedan Concept. During the reveal of that car, Mercedes said that their new design language of *surface-focused design featuring reduced lines and gaps* would be the way forward. And we're seeing it now. Although I imagine this is only just the start. By 2030, I imagine, most EVs will just look like blobs on wheels with almost no design elements whatsoever. Honestly, people will question if they are buying a $100k car that has boring bland design language.

You can't put a wing on an ev. They cut down the range significantly. Also making a retro styled ev would be unwise because the aerodynamics are horrible for older boxy cars. Until they have the technology to charge your car in 5 to 10 minutes aerodynamics plays a huge part of developing an Ev.
The Mid-2000s AMG are my favorite. This was the beginning of big horsepower numbers defining the Mercedes ranks. I entered into Mercedes ownership with a 2005 c230 kompressor sedan at 189 Hp and moved up (10 years later) to the 2006 CLS55 AMG at 469 Hp 516 lbs of torque. I have not needed to buy any other car after this. Technically those early AMGs were Mercedes by AMG or AMG by Mercedes since they were still just collaborating and not yet in house. I think this allowed the 80s and early 90s AMG designs to be more defined over the regular Mercedes models they were based on.

I was thinking on this recently before coming across your video. I have owned a C32 and a CLK55 AMG. Seemed like things became indistinguishable in the mid 2010s. When I couldn’t tell the difference between a C, E, and S class without looking very closely or finding the badge I think design was going downhill. I don’t own one but I think the 2010-2013 E class is one of the best looking Benz out there.

It all started to snowball when companies realized they could just replace Craftsmanship/build quality with new electronics/bells and whistles. I think we’re starting to see the peak of it. Now that it’s harder to develop new stuff/more risky it’s easy to just attach a V6 that’s tuned for like 40 more hp, a body kit and call it an AMG E53.

And now I also know what bothers be with the new (C118) front design the smile front that is inverted. And design of EQ lineup is just sad to look at the same way BMW iX, iXM and 7 designs are 😢
I agree with the styling part. But I disagree with SL43 with not being worthy of AMG line. It's actually the only roadcar Mercedes which uses F1 technology, the MGU-H on the turbo, which eliminates all of the turbo lag. I don't know the reason why they don't put it on the big engines such as the V8 or V12. but anyway I think the SL43 is the perfect convertible car.
When I was in college, there was an AMG of North America facility not far from me. Friends and I would go in and drool over the cars. The salesmen were cool with it as long as we didn't leave slobber and fingerprints all over the cars. These were the real AMG cars. Going into a MB dealership today and seeing them is not the same. They were exclusive, one-off cars, that were meant for special owners. They have taken the AMG name and turned it into just another Mercedes. The allure of owning an AMG is gone.
w210 and w211 is my all time fav lineup of mercedes, the e55 is by my opinion the best of the bunch, with its unique supercharger and mighty roar, i like w211 mostly for design because it looks super agressive when u slam on the amg kits and it has some beautiful arches and curves, the w210 is by my opinon the most variated mercedes, it has a huge range and variety of goodies, starting with the 300tdt u get the legendary "diesel 2j" also known as the om606, and the 300ce comes with the legendary m104 engine, theres even v12 versions of it in both sedans and wagons, it might not be the prettiest to look at but if its anything its subtle and doesent craze out anywhere, whereas the w211 looks mean as hell.
I am a native german, and when i got my driving licenses in the 90s, my first car was a 1987 W124 sedan. I LOVE THAT MODEL! I drove it everywhere. At the end it had ~400 000 km on the odo. And then a BMW driver thought, my mercedes is to long and shortened it by crashing in the back. Caused by age and odo, i got nearly NOTHING from the insurance. So i bought a Mitsubishi Lancer. However, i would love to see some of the old values came back to Mercedes. The 5 spoke AMG rims would be great for EV. Spoilers not really. These do downforce by destroying top speed and range. Yes in countries, where you have 100 kph / 65 mph as a topspeed it's not such a difference, but here in germany we are allowed to drive as fast as we want. And at speeds 200 kph / 130 mph a spoiler makes a big difference. And that is the reason, the EQ series looks like it does. To max out range by reducing drag. I love the new Hyundai cars. I have seen the new Staria on the street in white, with white wrapped windows. It looked like a shuttle from STAR TREK. That is soooo damn amazing! The new N 74 is a nice looking beast. I wish they would bring out a small series of that model, that is driveable on normal roads. normal interior, useable height, just the basic design. I would buy one, if it is priced right....
The new SL (R232) was actually designed by AMG from the ground up, which is a first for them. That's why all of them are branded as an "AMG". There are only differing powerplants.
Problem is in basic design itself. Look at that W124 it looks like it's chiseled from granite block with hammer by artist of taste, then look at AMG version: it was chiseled from same rock but using jack hammer. It looks raw and imposing, almost animal like. It demands your attention and primal instincts. And then there are torched blobs of plastic with AMG badge as seen today.
Peak AMGness was the 55k era of cars. The W211 E55 was the definition of wolf in sheeps clothing. One of the fastest vehicles of its day, and if you didn’t know any better it looked like every other e320 at the church on Sunday. Simple understated style, refined well built interior, and a monster under the hood that will happily run 160+ all day long
I completly agree about having a modern design based on an old school 80's car. That's a big advantage german car brands have over Tesla. They have history.
Bembli made me feel fairly bright for my taste in buying the car that sits in my garage, the CL 55 AMG. I fell in love with the CL 55 AMG when it was chosen as the Formula 1 safety car. The roof line, missing a B pillar, gave the car a very lovely line extending from the front end to the end of the trunk. Then, AMG put a 5.4 litre engine and added a supercharger to run the horsepower up to 493 bhp. I managed to find one close to home and was thrilled to be able to bring home a silver Silver Arrow. I bought the car 3 years ago and I'm still thrilled to drive a car that can nearly hit 200 mph, if it weren't for the 155 mph limiter that Mercedes puts on all of their production cars. Irrespective of that minor issue, I mean face it, when am I going to drive faster than 155 mph on a public highway? Sorry, I have no issues with my car. The interior is excellent, and the engine and transmission are excellent, so the car is just fantastic. I have to extend my thanks to Bembli for buttressing my love for the design of my CL 55 AMG.
Untill the late 90's Benz was special!! All those cars are still awesome, even today with all the new technology in current models . All the new cars are well - just another car 😳
I think AMG lost it on the 43s and 53s, if they instead used v6 and treated them like actually amgs including all additional and necessary parts that would make the car whole and effective things would be better. just like the w203 c55 and c32 - best combo of daddy and baby amg!!!
Any car that does not have V8 or atleast a V6 engine doesn't deserve the AMG badge or M badge for BMW. I dont care if you can get 600hp out of 2.0L engine. Its still just a loud little pepper grinder that doesen't even have the capacity of a Coca-Cola bottle. Put a V6+ engines in your cars or don't dare to call them sporty or luxurious. I dont care about emission I want a V6, V8 or V12 end of the story.
Mercedes AMG like BMW M has now become a marketing hack instead of a division that was once responsible for performance oriented treatment of regular cars. Now they just charge for the nameplate instead of performance. Its as if they’re saying “Hey you can’t afford the actual AMG? Come look at this “AMG” for less.” And can’t blame Mercedes alone for that. Every single manufacturer is doing that. They care about sales more than anything now.
back in the day they would also sometimes make 2 amg models in the same generation mate. Look at the w202 C36 and the C43 or the C32 Kompressor and then later the C55 in the 2000s. In the 2000s there was also a C30 CDI AMG. And all of these were properly fast so what do you mean.
What amg should have done is strap a liquid cooling system for the motors then allow the motors to overvolt/extra heat. This will produce more power at the cost of heat but the concept is similar to super/turbocharging an ICE engine. Would've been super cool

The past half decade has been pretty boring for German cars in general in my opinion. Made most cars working under the same platform with the same drivetrains, a lot of the same features, just a different look. American cars do a lot of the same, but admittedly boring for an "AMG" lineup. M cars have gotten more boring over the years as well.

I despise that new AMG grille with the vertical bars. It just doesn't at all fit the curvy designs of the modern AMGs. Not to mention that it's not even an AMG grille to begin with. It has been around since ~1953, long before the AMG was founded as a tuning shop (in 1967) and it simply got ported into the modern AMG models without even having any history linking it to the AMG brand as a whole over the past decades. It's absolutely awful and I sincerely hope and wish it disappears as soon as possible.
It's very diluted now. Last week had a girl get angry at me for not offering her transport, then she started saying I don't care about your car, I have a glc amg. I was like damn, which engine you got. She said diesel. 🤦🏿♂️
mercedes in general goes in the wrong direction with their designs. The worst is their interior, the current e class interior is just amazing but everything in the c-class, s-class and even eqe/eqs looks way worse.
I do like some of new amg like the gtr, it looks mean and feel like the car itself can talk " Look at me, I'm angry ". But personally, i really like the CLK63 Black Series with iridium silver metallic and it reminds me of the CLK-DTM edition. And oh yes don't forget the W140 S73 looks baller to me.
Well, they dont change so much because it costs money. They just make the bare minimum, a new bumper and a few badges. Bigger fenders etc. would require a bigger change, or more parts, so it would cut into their profit. They do the minimum to make a bigger margin.
In my opinion, the 190E and the 300SL are the most gorgeous cars that Mercedes have ever made. Even though they have completely different designs, they have one thing in common, they've made a mark in car-manufacturing history to stand out! The 300SL is an elegant car that just oozes confidence and class and the 190E just accentuates that you can make a 'normal sedan look badass with some minor tweaks. Great break down and wishes you the best, cheers. 🙂
I feel the amg gt 4 door is a sedan that doesn’t have a black series trim or fours b it is the type of Sedan you mentioned and will go down as an icon for Mercedes especially for being the fastest production sedan they’ve made
0:00 - 0:40 is something that happens with almost all car makers. Everything is getting diluted and less wild. There are less and less cars that just make you go "holy fucking shiet" when you see or drive them. AMG had some really crazy cars, like the 190 EVO 2; theres not really anything these days that compares (mabye the AMG GT).
AMG lost its prestige when Mercedes started selling models that were no longer hand built engines. Most AMG models today are just normal cars with upgraded rims and a more intense throttle map
Overall the industry has gotten incredibly lazy. Say goodbye to the car community when everything goes electric, because even a Honda Fit will be fast.

When I heard about the transition to the 4 cylinder ev hybrid for many of the AMG models, I knew I had to scoop one of the V8s up before they were history so I bought maybe one of the last 2021 C 63 S models ever sold by Mercedes earlier this year. It's a shame that these are dying out because they sound amazing and are so fun to drive.
I have driven this car. It felt so powerful I was afraid to floor it.

When it comes to EV’s: new Hyundai went Mercedes, Mercedes went old Hyundai.
They actually scooped up a bunch of old merc and bmw designers. The ones that were around in the late 2000s
This happens when a company gets bought and becomes part of Big Corporate. Their original philosophy becomes secondary to the political and financial interest of Daimler-Benz. The AMG badge will retain its value and prestige for a little while, but eventually it will become meaningless and thus worthless.

Most performance badges have been diluted these days, with badges such as 's-line' and basically every bmw other than base having some sort of M badge. Everyone wants to feel special but no one actually wants to pay for meaningful increases in performance.
One of the few badges that hasn't been diluted is Audi's RS.
When it says RS, there's RS in it.

And we are saying what ugly cars bmw are making. Maybe we don’t appreciate yet what bmw is trying to do. They go for crazy designs. But it could work out what they are trying to do

A lot of people have gone to M and G class to differentiate themselves and Mercedes seeing that, made the decision to go the route of the predominant SUV and 4wd market. Fair play Krauts gotta eat

Could you please make a video where you try to redesign the eqs amg. Like putting lager wheel arches etc.
All I want is a Mitsubishi Galant AMG. Do those count as AMG more than the new ones?

Completely agree, I just don’t know how or why I can not get excited when I look at the eqs.
I love all of the wild 65 AMG’s & Black Series, hopefully they keep the Black Series label exclusive
Always a fan of that EVO. Yeah that would be crazy if Mercedes can make something like that again.
Worst is when the put the AMG body kit and badges on 4cyls. Those 3 letters used to be the Mark of the Beast. Now it sounds like a kindergarten song.

I feel the amg gt 4 door is a sedan that doesn’t have a black series trim or fours b it is the type of Sedan you mentioned and will go down as an icon for Mercedes especially for being the fastest production sedan they’ve made
On a design aspects, the three pointed star on the grille would have to go and bring back and the original star as those on 1980's, mid 90's lineup.

CLK 63 AMG Black Series is possibly the best design ever.
