Rescuing a Seraphon Starpriest

  • This week I paint an old Skink Starpriest that I got used a while back. The model was in alright condition, just a few minor fixes were needed to get this guy to the tabletop! Using some real world examples really helped get this guy some pretty awesome scales, I don't normally go for things like that, but in this case it really helped sell the idea for this really cool Skink.

    I was just watching Squidmar miniatures “ugliest mini’s” video when I had an idea for a fun challenge. Take the worst sculpted mini you can find and see if your painting technique can truly rescue it! I’m sure there are plenty of bad mini’s to choose from.

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true! More often than not I just put oil washes right over the top of my paint jobs, in this case I was a little worried about the white ink because I’ve had issues in the past with not letting it fully cure. From the time of application to the oil wash was about 10 minutes for this guy, so I varnished it to be safe. I’ve had white ink come right off models in the past, it’s very delicate.

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Contrast through the airbrush is actually making me excited to have all these contrast paints! I haven’t used very many of them because there hasn’t really been something that made sense, but airbrushing then changes the game. They won’t wreck your airbrush, there’s nothing really different about these paints compared to normal formulas, other than there’s more medium in there to do the contrast thing. Most of them are already really thin because of that and can go straight into the pot, really nice. Now to just transfer all my pots to dropper bottles!!

  • @TheHouseCommunity

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      I would stick with the blues and oranges for as much of an army as possible, maybe using pink in the basing if the model doesn’t have any extra bits that would make sense for it. That would generally tie it together. I would say that any place where gold works just use gold, that way you get a good amount of that in there too.
      I wouldn’t mind getting a start collecting box for these guys and trying it, something I’ve been thinking about more and more. Someday :)

      Now is a great time to get back into the hobby! Lots of great stuff coming out all the time these days.
      For a starter paint set I would recommend something like a Vallejo starter paint kit, something with a good variety of colors and a handful of metallics, then probably get some Games Workshop Nuln oil and Agrax earthshade. You put an oil was on the mini. What steps do you take to make sure the paints that go on after stick to the oil?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I have the time to let it dry fully, which really doesn't take too long, especially with a hairdryer, then it's fine to continue painting over the top of it. the water in the new paint won't do anything as long as the oil paints are dry. If I don't have the time to wait for it to be really dry and I need to move on, I hit it with a hairdryer, then some matte varnish, hairdryer again, and then continue to paint. The varnish is really the key to speed.

    What is that paper you lay down for painting and spraying?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just black construction paper, nothing too special. Great for getting the excess moisture off of the brush for glazing and drybrushing though :)

    good paint job overall, must say the finish looks a bit chalky and not as smooth. not sure if this is because its from ebay or not

    quick question - have you had any issues applying acrylics over oil washes?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the oil isn’t dry then you can get some weird mixing of paint on the model, sometimes it’s a great effect to do, especially on weapons, you can get a cool streaking kind of look. But most of the time it’s not what we want. I suggest either letting the oils dry completely, or letting them dry enough to be mostly set and then varnishing over the top to lock it in. I usually give it 20 minutes and then varnish the model, that way my oils are protected and there isn’t any interference with new paints being applied.

      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got mine from Amazon, it was, I think, an 8 pack of colors for $39 or so. You can find them in Michaels craft stores as well.

    You didnt do the thing! 😨😨😨The thing at the intro where you transition into the video by covering the camera lens with the bottom of the model.
    And also the model is really kick ass :D

      Lol, I guess I wasn’t feeling it this week. The base for this model is particularly small compared to most of the other ones.

    He looks cool but there's white speckles from the airbrush all over that model, work on your control and maybe mask off areas you don't want to be ruined by the airbrush
