    I thought old dune was fun but after watching it, I felt like this is infinately better because it let the story unfold organically and didn't make paul as hero. I also liked that alia is a baby, its so creepy that jessica is discussing creepy plans with fetus lol

      Problem was that the studio took away Final Cut from David Lynch who directed the 1984 version, that’s why from around the hour mark, it becomes erratic and a mess.
      He said it would be around 3-4 hours and the cut off half the movie.

    The choice of Chani’s character was certainly a bit of a change from the novel, giving her her own distinct motivations and characterization wherein her love for Paul and her people is why she can’t accept him as the Mahdi. This change was ultimately done by Villeneuve so he could tell the story of Dune without making the mistake Frank Herbert admitted he did, being too subtle about Paul.
    Many people after Dune was published still saw Paul Atreides as a hero, even though Herbert vehemently wished to portray the opposite, a reality which Herbert owned up to in his motivations for later novels. I think one can argue Herbert’s more one dimensional characterization of Chani kinda contributes to this-since it gives Paul no personal repercussions in the book. Him becoming cult leader doesn’t truly meaning anything for him in a way that harmful to the self, it doesn’t alienate those he loves in the book, which might have hurt Herbert’s intention.
    In the movie however, Paul becoming Kwizats Haderach has to truly mean the death of Paul Atreides in a lot of ways, and this costs him dearly with regards to those he truly loves.
    Also, it helps further drive in a point of how Chani represents the fremen. Chani at the end rides a sandworm while the others go off into spaceships, something the fremen NEVER DID. This is a key point of characterization for the whole of the fremen. The more they follow the Mahdi in a fanatical way, the more actually out of touch with their culture they become. Their culture is taken over by Paul and Jessica’s influence, their cult of personality. Hence, at the end of the day, it’s Chani who knows Paul Atreides as simply the boy she loves and not as any messiah, who is still the one acting like a fremen, riding the worms, etc.

    When you say that this was less brutal than the original -- the original was the book. David Lynch actually seemed like he didn't like the books because he changed the whole theme, and turned it into kind of a hero's journey. Frank Herbert's novel was meant as a cautionary tale against creating and following Messiahs. Paul IS NOT really a hero. The Bene Gesserit were trying to create an individual that would create the future that they wanted, and planted the prophesies in order to control the Fremen. However, when Jessica broke with the plan, they created the circumstances for their own destruction, and that of the empire. Paul uses the Fremen for his own personal revenge, even though he knows that the result will be a bloody Jihad that will devastate many worlds. He's only a hero in the same respect that Genghis Khan could be considered a hero.

    • @mdemi7692
      @mdemi7692 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      okay i need some clarity. paul created an alliance with the fremen for revenge and also because his father said it was necessary. everything he does before taking the water of life is strategical and not in an evil sense. Once he does take it, he doesn’t become a tyrant, he can literally see everything all at once. isn’t he choosing the greater good amongst every single possibility? it’s not merciless and power driven killing like a Genghis Khan figure, it’s a man that knows everything doing what must be done right?? *if the answer to this is in the books or answered in dune messiah just say that, don’t explain lol

      @ryanhampson673 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@mdemi7692 Paul never wanted to become a tyrant. What happened was the movement grew beyond his control and takes a life of its own. Paul starts something and then loses control of it the Fremen believe in the cause so much that they won’t listen to Paul anymore. A lot will be explained in Messsiah that shows this. Messiah sort of wraps up Paul’s story for the most part but Paul’s story doesn’t completely finish until the book after that Children of Dune. After that it’s Paul’s son Leto II that becomes the emperor and stuff gets wildly weird and bad….But with Leto II the God Emperor it’s all means to an end and for a good purpose even though it’s as horrible as it gets.

      @@senantiasa have you read the books? Because if not your point is moot. Yes, Paul is the perceived hero in the first book and he liberates Arrakis, so good points for that… No one would view the Harkonnens as the good guys even with a western point of view (chip on your shoulder much?)After they liberate Arrakis they go on to destroy virtually every house in the imperium and kill 61 billion people in the process….If you still view him as the hero after that I’d question your moral standing. Frank Herbert has said many times the idea he was trying to portray is the danger of a charismatic leader and in the story Paul knowingly uses the Fremen beliefs for his benefit of getting revenge on the baron and emperor. Granted the book readers have knowledge of what happens, but literally everyone I’ve watched watch Dune has come to the same conclusion of “oh wait, isn’t Paul supposed to be the good guy?” Freeing your land= Good…Killing tens of billions for your leader after you have freed your home world= Bad.

    • @senantiasa
      @senantiasa 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ryanhampson673 No, I haven't read the books. What is the motivation for the Fremen to kill billions of people? Because at least in the movies, the Emperor destroyed House of Atreides because Duke Leto ruled with his heart (meaning that the other houses don't rule with their heart, because then the Emperor would have destroyed those houses too). But I've also heard that in the book, the Emperor wiped out the Atreides because its army is becoming the strongest in the Imperium.
      Why did the Great Houses reject Paul as Emperor? Is it because they still want the old, evil Emperor to rule? Or is it because they want to rule Arrakis themselves? Or is it because they don't believe that the Fremen have the right to rule over their own land? It seems like the Great Houses "chose the wrong side". I'm assuming that it was these houses that ruled over Arrakis before the Harkonnens (because the Harkonnens ruled for 80 years, yet the Fremen have been ruled/oppressed/enslaved for centuries).
      So those are my two questions about the books.

    The Water of Life was basically super concentrated spice. Up until Paul only the Bene Gesserit could survive drinking it because they were trained to neutralize the poison aspect of it. It unlocks ancestral memories along the female bloodlines. For Paul, since he was a male, he was able to access both his female and male genetic memories. It also gave him the ability to see all possible outcomes of things in the future. So basically he had perfect prescience of the future and of the past through his genetic memories. That’s what the Bene Gesserit were after.

    Feyd-Rautha may have found the sietch to destroy it because he is also prescient - there’s a few hints he might be, such as dreaming of Margot and Paul’s inability to foresee the attack on the sietch. It’s difficult for the prescient to see anything another prescient could counteract. The director also indicated Feyd is meant to be more of a mirror to Paul and more of a legitimate threat - the idea that Feyd could have been Paul if he’d had the same resources.
    I think it’s purposely left unclear if that’s why Feyd holds his own against Paul - though Paul at that point is so omniscient that he maybe chose to let the fight play out the way it did. In the book, Lord Fenring blocks Paul’s sight at the fight, but in this case it may have been Feyd.

Just like his father (Leto) didn't marry Jessica, in order to keep the option of a political marriage open. Chani remains his love, the mother of his kids and "concubine". Like Jessica says in the book: we who are called concubines, history will remember as wives. (paraphrasing)

    Yea the “sonic” weapons from Lynch’s film weren’t a thing in the books at all. Lynch didn’t want his movie to be a “kung fu” movie in his words, even though the weirding way is a martial art. Many people want to compare Paul to Luke in Star Wars. Paul isn’t Luke…He’s Anakin, so much so Lucas based the storyline of Darth Vader on Paul.

    Can someone explain too me is it like the freemen either get exterminated or the great houses die, like if Paul didn't go beast mode and attack they would have been hunted down in the south? So it's the moral of he wants the arrakis people to live even if it means going to war with everyone, there's no wrong or right answer 🤔

      It's quite tragic, if bro leads with his heart to protect the Arrakis people he becomes a tyrant to achieve it, I see a lot of people portray him as bad which he is kinda, but hits different when understanding mostly no one in that position would give up and watch their love ones die and home crumble around them for the greater good, jeez 🔥

      no you're right, Paul saw the only timeline where they survive was the one where they had to act like harkonnens "to defeat a monster you have to become a monster" type of way. It's similar to his mother in the start before she becomes the reverend mother, either death or torment. Paul chooses torment, too.

    You really need to stop comparing 1984 dune to this dune.
    This new dune is not a remake of the 1984 dune.
    It is an adaptation of the 1965 novel.
    In fact, most novel fans of Dune. Do not actually like the 1984 movie. Because it's actually not a great adaptation of the novel.

    This movie in particular got me interested in the books. Have you read the books? I enjoyed the first one but not to the extent of this one right here! I don't know what it was about it. Possibly the cinematography and the similarities it has to star wars and LOTR. I've only seen the stars wars where it has the one with Oscar Issac who also played Paul's father in the first Dune
    Hollywood doesn't make movies this exciting very often, it's rare and when they do they surprise you. I can't wait to see what happens next in Dune Messiah

    I have a problem with you calling that abomination of a movie from Lynch as the "original". That movie was not Dune. Was a version of Dune that was completely opposite of Herberts themes. Was the 1st "Marvel" movie. All hero's and superpowers. !/2 the plot was not part of the "original" story. I found it entertaining. But just was not the real story from the Book. Sound weapons. And making it rain by thought. That was crap. These last 2 movies carried with them the themes of Dune. Power being a source of corruption. Leaders who should not be worshiped. That is what Dune is about. And the final lesson........ "Be careful what you wish for... You might just get it"..........
