Something missing from the books is that it is like the Middle Ages in that strategic alliances and marriages were very important. And the politics were very important. But, The last lines of book Jessica, tells Chani that Irulan “will have the name, yet she'll live less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she's bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives."
this is what hollywood has lost. star wars, star trek, lord of the rings, they all had the one thing that is lacking today. great writing, and filming brought together to make a story come alive.
I was very impressed by Rebecca Ferguson in this movie. It's a shame she's such an underrated actress because she's so amazing and charismatic in every movie she does !
It's always fun to hear Denis Villeneuve talk about Rebecca, because in most interviews it sounds like he practically worships the ground she walks on. He's a man who recognises talent, that's for sure
I don't think she's underrated at all. I've seen a ton of praise for her and rightfully so. She's amazing in everything she's in. She can do it all, drama, action, thrillers.
Dave Bautista is like the Anti Rock, takes roles he finds interesting and fun for himself and is based and lovable as an actor. Also, I love how Stilgar's "LISAN AL GAIB!" is almost comedic relief through the entire film, until that last shot of him boarding the Ship and him screaming it with that fanatical look in his eyes. Aslo also, it's never really explained in the Movies but, the reason Swords/Knives are used in combat, and why they didn't use the Las Guns on the Thopter is because, when a Las Gun's beam hits a Shield, it sets off an explosion akin to a Nuclear blast, because reasons, so Las Guns are used against unshielded targets/fortifications, the Crawler didn't have Shields as they also attract Worms and drive them into a frenzy when in the Desert.
I don't get where this "Stilgar is comedic relief" is coming from. There is nothing even remotely funny about his transformation from a fanatic to a zealot. It's just sad and frightening.
Just for clarity's sake, the Kwizat Hadorach (KH) is the real chosen one the Bene Gesserit (BG) wanted to lead. A male BG that can see both pasts of male and female, along with the future, and the BG want that person to lead the Imperium (and they want to control him). Paul was also trained as a fighter and politician. When he drinks the water of life, it is the final step for him to become the KH (though he's arguably only a psuedo-KH since Jessica had him one generation early - The BG wanted Jessica to have a daughter with Leto Atreides, who would then have a male child, the KH with Feyd-Rautha). So, the Lisan Al-Gaib (LA) is the made up prophecy by the BG to control them as a people. That's why Jessica has the rundown on how to take over their culture. She didn't really want to, until she drank the Water of Life. When that happens, she's much more deterministic, as is Paul. She has the daughter that tells her what to do. Paul has crystal clear potential futures. They see the possibilities and what must happen for their best case scenario, so they do those things without question. It's a major part of why Paul switches so drastically upon drinking the Water of Life.
The reason they planned for Feyd to marry fem-Paul is because KH needed the Harkonan bloodline in him, but Paul already did because his mom is Harkonan, which is why he could become the KH at all. If his mom wasn’t Harkonan, he couldn’t be KH.
@@adrianvulpes9509the BG for all their scheming and analysis failed to take into account that action. In the expanded Dune books, the Kwisatz Haderach mother (the one in charge of the KH breeding program) wants to refine the genes from the Harkonnen stock and that resulted in Jessica's birth. Then they essentially partnered a Harkonnen gene holder with an Atreides one and they were caught surprised that a male offspring was their long awaited KH. Even Mohiam failed to take that into account when Paul showed extraordinary resiliency during the Gom Jabbar test. The BG sure were full of ego.
@@fella790he is a full fledged KH once he took the Water of Life. He came a generation earlier but he is a real deal. His command of prescience was a bit weaker though and the Golden Path was supposed to be the way for him to fully wield the powers of a KH. His son would take that mantle when Paul threw away what must be done.
The worm riding scene in theaters was brilliant. Love the time spent on build up and patience during such a packed film. Certain theater audio systems during it vibrate you to your core lol
This movie really showed me that there’s a CRAZY different from theater to theater in sound quality. Some places do their sound design much better than others.
I actually got goosebumps seeing it the first time. Steven Spielberg was interviewing Denis for a Director's Guild podcast and said about the sandworm riding scene "it's one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever!" That's some seriously high praise.
With Dune 2 crossing $710m worldwide, confident that if Dune 3 by Denis Villeneuve is on par with Dune 2, it could have a shot at $1bn worldwide which would be crazy for a Dune movie!
17:26 they don't go into it too much, but the lasguns (lasers they use) trigger a nuke-like explosion if they touch a shield, not only at the point of contact, but it also reverberates back to the person using the lasgun and would kill them too. So, they can't take out the chopper with that.
One reason the technology seems so different is that 10,000 years earlier Mankind won their war against their equivalent of Skynet and "thinking machines" were outlawed. People turned instead to developing the human mind leading to groups like the Bene Gesserit, the Mentats (human calculators like Thufir Hawat), and the Guild Navigators.
The reveal about Jessica being Baron Harkonnen's daughter is only briefly mentioned in the book. Baron Harkonnen is homosexual and has no known biological children which is why he relies mostly on his nephews Rabban (Batista) and Feyd-Rautha (Butler) as his surrogate sons. It is mentioned that he allowed himself one time to be seduced by a Bene Gesserit who would then go on to give birth to Jessica. The major concern about Alia (Paul's sister) being exposed to the Water of Life in the womb is that it turns her into an "Abomination", a pre-born Reverand Mother with the power and vision of all the memories of previous RMs tied to her bloodline. This makes her vulnerable to being possessed by the egos of her ancestors (including Baron Harkonnen) because she doesn't have a strong sense of her own identity; how can she when she's still just a foetus at this point. This goes onto be the main story for the third book Children of Dune.
It goes into it a lot in the prequels written by Brian Herbert. Pretty much got blackmailed into it, twice, and then was strategically given an STD that transformed his body from god-esque to what it is now, deteriorating it to the point where he's too weak to walk without suspensor help.

The way Villaneuve and his cinematographer frame every shot is incredible. It’s so minimalist and yet so great in scale and detailed at the same time. In theaters this was just an incredible watch
I'm biased because Villeneuve is a hometown boy, and I first saw his shit when I was a teenager and when he was barely a full adult... but besides his obvious storytelling abilities, the guy has an eye for talent and for surrounding himself with talented people. One thing you may not have picked up on: Chani’s secret name is “Desert Spring” and she said it was about a prophecy….the prophecy was basically that Maud’dib would die and be brought back to life by tears of a desert spring!
My wife saw the first movie playing on a bus and she told me it was a "weird sci-fi thing" and when we watched Part 2 in theaters she loved it and called it her best theater experience!

My reaction to DUNE p2 was to go out to the lobby and buy another ticket for the next available theater showing. I saw this film 3 times in theater, all IMAX. No Regrets (Regerts)!
This is the only other series that i've watched so much that its getting closer to my lord of the rings binges through out my life. I've legitimately seen LOTR 14 times (the entire trilogy) from memory, other times, it was in the background while my friends and I were gaming. I've seen Dune 2 at least a total of 7 times now, i love it so much. This is the 2nd movie series that has done that to me, and beat the matrix.
Paul actually used the atomics to destroy the cliffs that would protect arakeen from the sandstorms. It also opened up a third attack point for the fremen.
56:05 I find weird that they chose to make the Emperor call Leto weak in the movies. The Emperor did not think Leto was weak, quite the opposite, he admired and even envied Leto, for many reasons... he was popular among the other houses, had a son to heir, etc., unlike him (The Emperor) who seems powerful, but in reality is only being controlled by the Bene Gesserit who chose to not grant him a son, for example. The Emperor even wished that Irulan had been born earlier so that she could've been older and married Leto.
I think he did that as a final desperate attempt to kill Paul and save himself. He called his father weak, knowing that Paul will have to challenge him (or his champion, because he was old) to a duel.
I interpreted it as a taunt out of anger, frustration and unwillingness to accept his defeat. For the same reason he said that Paul should bow at his feed. It is dishonest, but he can't help himself but to spite Paul for daring to challenge his place as emperor in such a disrespectful manner.
I am so glad that Jessica is so important, characters like her usually die as part of the origin story, not so here. I love how powerful she becomes, she's almost galadriel
I love watching the reactions to Dune 2, just to see that moment when that one defining thought of Dune pops into the minds of the reactors (who haven't read the books): "Maybe.... Maybe this guy isn't the hero."
They didn't really go into it, but there were absolutely moments when Answer and the Oak were hootin' and hollerin' and Mason seemed to have some kind of haunted look on his face. Not sure if I read it right, but I think he felt it
@@ladrac198 Yeah, it's surprising that so many of them are rooting for a man and his mother who declare a "holy war" and whose followers are portrayed as an army of fanatics. Perhaps Denis Villeneuve should have used the original terminology from the books: "jihad". This would probably have set off many more alarm bells in the Western consciousness because of the word's more negative connotations. Although it and a holy war or crusade mean basically the same thing.
Messiah is going to break a lot of "casual viewer's" hearts I think. I hope the 3rd book gets adapted as well, but I'm not sure about God Emperor - that might be too out there for most people.
52:32 Just FYI about the atomics, in the lore atomics can't be used directly against houses because of a long held agreement called the "The Great Convention". Using atomics against another house would obviously destroy the agreement and cause all out armageddon so Paul smartly used them to destroy the barrier wall allowing the storm and the worms into the basin.
24:10 - Pulling up the front edge of the worm's ring segments exposes sensitive tissue underneath. Sand severely irritates this exposed tissue, so the worm can't dive and must remain at the surface, and will roll to keep the exposed bit as far from the sand as possible. By shifting the hooks laterally, the rider can force the worm to roll, which also causes it to turn.
At the end, when Paul tells Stilgar, "Lead them to Paradise". It is said with sadness because this is the terrible fate he saw if he went south and tried to avoid. He now realizes there was no avoiding the death of billions because of him. The only way to avoid this outcome would have been to just roll over and give up, letting the Harkonnens and the Emperor win. Spoiler alert: This is also why I think Paul wasn't able to follow the golden path. He emotionally wasn't strong enough to deal with all the death and destruction that was needed to shape the universe the way it needed to be like his son, Leto II (God Emperor of Dune) was able to do later.

Leto II is a sociopath, thanks to his upbringing, and he has no problem becoming a heartless dictator hyperfocused on the ideal of humanity in the future, while causing untold suffering to billions in his thousands of years of rule. Again, Herbert warning the reader about the awful reality of authoritarian leaders. That so many Leto fans try to explain away his monstrous behavior just goes to reinforce how psychology has noted a marked uptick in antisocial personality disorders in the last 50 years.
@@rikk319 And yet, Leto II is what was needed to save humanity from extinction. There have been great leaders and terrible leaders who were sociopaths. There will always be need of people like that to make the tough choices when times are hard, the rest of the time, keep those people as far away from power as you can, until they are needed again.

@@rikk319 You forgot one specific point : Dune was already been terraformed by Fremens for centuries by the time the Atreides arrived. It's not shown in the movies but is described in the book. So the desert will eventually fade, and Dune will become green and blue again, destroying the worms and the spice production with or without intervention. So, in a nutshell, the Empire will crumble, revolts will be repressed by force, people will starve to death and humanity will return to pre-industrial time in no time on every planet. Don't forget there will be in the first time a politic mess and a struggle for power since the treachery of the Emperor will be revealed by Harkonnens. So you have to choose between two directions : 1) Let things go its way, doing nothing, and hundreds of billions of people dying of isolation, war and starvation in the long term. -> no more central power ; -> no space-time cuts in galactic travels ; -> maybe the slow and final end of humanity ? 2) Doing something to unite humanity by holy war, dozens of billions people dying by your action in the short term, but saving ultimately hundreds of billions dying the worst way possible. -> still a remnant of central power for some time (until technology has advanced enough to travel in space without spice) ; -> humanity reforged without the influence of the spice, all types of prophets and precognition leaders. For the point of view of Paul and his successor, it's a moral conflict of the "Trolley problem" in the grand scale. *An utilitarianism moral dilemma,* which cannot be comprehend by the all the people suffering and dying because of the choice of one single man to turn the direction of the train. So, yeah, Leto II is a sociopath who chooses to "save" humanity from its demise. He's not doing good obviously, he's doing bad for the greater good. Maybe there would have been better options, if the Bene Gesserit had not played with the lignages for so long to create extrasensory peoples, or if they didn't played with religion and create an ultimate fanatic army ready to leach on the Empire with or without the existence or the survival of their messiah... That's why Leto II is so obsessed and angry towards the Bene Gesserit, his dictatorship style is because of their past choices, but he's not mean to destroy this group but teach them the harshest lesson possible, to let them evolve the best way possible (and the two books after is about the point of view of the Bene Gesserit). It's not one man fault, *it's the fault of all humanity until this point in the story and the dependence of spice to stabilize the society.* Leto II get humanity off spice to free itself of strong leaders, false beliefs, and extrasensory people. He's not a hero, he's not a good guy, hes' not a great leader, he's a martyr willingly sacrificing his humanity to save humanity. Was he right ? Nobody will never know in Dune, nor the readers, because it's obvious Frank Herbert wanted to reveal something about another space related threats in one or two more books but had not the time to do so... which is sad.
@@Zagrakhen If spice leads to the problems, then perhaps humans losing space travel and existing on separate planets would be best. How exactly would that lead to extinction any sooner? Humans would evolve separately on each planet, and not have to worry about some over-arching despotism running everything in the galaxy. I've read the books, too. I just find Herbert's premises about human evolution and extinction and there being "only one way forward" with the Golden Path rather absurd. You don't teach "humanity" because "humanity" isn't a hive mind. Each new generation, each new individual, has to be educated to develop properly. There's no way to teach a "lesson" and have humanity learn it for all time, because "humanity" is a concept. Human beings, each individual one, is the reality. In my opinion, Leto II was even more misguided than Paul. If Herbert was trying to show how a single human trying to make decisions for everyone else was a very bad idea, he succeeded. If he was trying to show that Leto II was ultimately right, then he's plowing under everything he taught about charismatic leaders being bad in the first two books. Either way, it shows that he had some good ideas, but getting your philosophical lessons from fiction isn't always the best idea.
52:15 - That wasn't a warning shot. The capitol city Arakeen is built within a ring of mountains called the Shield Wall, so named because it keeps the sandstorms and worms at bay. Paul used the atomic weapons to blow a hole in the Shield Wall right as a particularly nasty storm hit, allowing the storm through the mountains and creating a passage for worms carrying an army of Fremen to reach the city.
LOVED this movie. The casting was fantastic and I was just thinking in my head of all the actors I recognized lol 😂 also Rebeca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica SO WELL she made me feel the pain and torment she was going through after drink the “Water of Life” and the fact she could totally switch from protective mother to a tormented souls with over a thousand Reverend Mothers speaking to her at once is incredibly impressive.
I appreciate the "twelfth century" reference much more than you might expect. They really teased the "cowbell" thing with the "More. More. Give me more." And yes, Chani comes comically close to saying her secret name is Zendaya.
You should see Timothy in "The King". Saw it years ago and his performance in that was why his performance in Dune wasn't such a shock to me. "The King" is fantastic.

Even Paul’s father Leto is related to the Baron, if I’m not mistaken the Harkonnens and the Ateidis somewhat share ancestry, in the first movie the Leto poison scene, the Baron calls him cousin.

48:08 The Fremen warrior is probably the most underrated actor in this film. The entire scene rests on him believably turning to Paul's side, and you can see his confusion and defiance become feelings of wonder and fanatical loyalty-all sold with body language and a single word.
An interesting fact is that the Bene Gesserit can choose when to get pregnant and the gender of their child in order to produce children when and where the order wishes, following the Bene Gesserit breeding program. And Paul’s mom disobeyed the orders and gave birth to a son
Paul's secret name, "Usul", is a word for the foundation/base of a pillar, that holds everything else up, and his war name "Muad'Dib", the kangaroo mouse of Arrakis, is also a constellation that points to their North Star, AkA "The One Who Points the Way", another way of saying leader, SO, Paul Muad'Dib Usul, AkA "Paul, the one who leads the way, and is the foundation that holds us all up"... pretty powerful name! also, the Harkonnens planet is orbiting a black sun, so with that and their ozone layer, it makes an old school filter on the whole planet, so under the suns rays, everything is shades of blacks, greys, and whites, but away from the suns rays, they have colours...
Loved your reactions as usual, thanks guys! Just something to keep in mind - the author, Frank Herbert, intended everyone to realize that Paul is not the hero. He's the villain of the story. Dune is, at heart, a cautionary Sci Fi tale about Fascism and Theocracy. Paul is someone who readily embraces Revenge. And he voluntarily turns his back on the Atreides way his Father taught him, to embrace the legacy of his Harkonnen bloodline, and seize power for himself. This movie wraps the first book in the series, Dune. The next film will begin into DUNE MESSIAH, one of the sequels. Let's just say that Herbert kept trying to get people to realize that the anti-hero Paul was a villain, so expect that the farther into the story that you go, the harder and harder it should be to justify Paul's actions, or to be on his side. When people ask "What villain do you love to root for in all of Sci Fi or Fantasy?" After you see Dune, you really can only ever answer "Paul Muad'Dib". Because we love to be on his side, but once you follow the full arc of the first book, it becomes abundantly clear that he sacrificed who he was and how he was raised in order to pursue an agenda his father would never have sanctioned, and in the process, even knowing that he would cause billions of people to die of starvation, he still chose his own success over the well-being of hundreds of millions of innocents. Muad'Dib is the single greatest Anti-Hero ever written. And the sad thing is... most folks miss that completely. And end up cheering for Fascism, Cruelty, and Jihad. Which is the term used in the books. And the ironic thing is that Dune is the underpinning for all modern SciFi, the same way that Lord of the Rings is the underpinning for all modern Fantasy.

Except for the material that is based on Asimov's Foundation trilogy, which was voted in it's own time (40-50s) as the best science fiction story ever told. Is it really that hard to believe that people prefer Fascism and Jihad over Feudalism? At least in those extremes you have a choice, you can be a follower, a bystander, or a rebel. Under Feudalism you are born into it, and that's it. Many people loved and followed Napoleon in his imperialism because he dismantled Feudalism. Anyway, for the Fremen, Paul is a hero that finally took them out of a harsh life and threat of genocide, and led them into power and hope. For the empire he is a villain that is destroying the status quo, a status quo that is being enforced by corruption and fiefdom. Paul is not a villain, arguably he's an anti hero, and the novels show us how terrible the existence of a Messiah is for anyone who is not following him.
At 13yrs old when i saw Return of the King at the cinema, i thought I'd soon see films that were done so well & make me feel the same way as the LOTR trilogy. I didn't think it would take 20yrs until the Dune films but I'm glad i got to experience that same feeling again.
I thought exactly the same thing! The LOTR trilogy had been my #1 favourite for twenty years... Now they're tied with Dune! I just hope Messiah will be equally incredible.
It goes to show you that whenever someone says about a movie, or sports star, "We'll never see something or someone as good as this again", it's just a tired trope and very self-centered, as it almost always focuses on someone or something from their own childhood or lifetime, and never someone or something from history, or the chance that it will very likely be surpassed at some point in the future.
These movies were so well made and entertaining and I'm so glad Villeneuve made the choices he did to clarify the themes from the books. What I find most interesting about the "Dune" series is that the overarching theme is how propaganda about a "Messiah" and a the manipulation of people by a charismatic leader leads to problems. The fact that Paul becomes the unwilling leader of a Holy War that leads to the genocide of millions is wild to me. One hopes that he's on the right path, but we find out that by the end of this movie, his mother and the people around him led him to be a tryannical and blood soaked emperor.
So, the people Paul replaced were better? The Emperor, The Baron, The Bene Geserrit? Paul could see all possible futures. Even though the path he was forced to take was going to be bloody. Humanity survived. If the Bene Gesserit got "The One" they were hoping for. The one they had complete control over. Would that be better? The Reverend Mother was willing to sacrifices a whole House. And you think it would be better to have her in control of the "Ultimate Power" in the Universe? Think of our own past...... What about the tens of millions of Humans killed in WW2. Was horrible. Mass destruction on a scale not seen before. But would it have been better to let the Nazis win? I do not think so. Paul was a good man. One who tried to do the best he could. But sometimes the best is still horrible. He could have run from the responsibility. But instead, he did what he thought was the best he could do. Given the circumstances.
The knee-jerk silly reactions to Stilgar's descent into religious obsession and fanaticism isn't funny but heartbreaking. Taking his tragic character as a sign of comedy is shallow and depressing, considering where his character ends up and what the author (and director I think) was trying to convey.
@@rikk319 Director and editors definitely played up the religious fanaticism for laughs, because they don't respect religion and they look down on the religious. They had an opportunity to show how scary devotion is, how terrifying fanaticism can get, and instead they played it off for cheap laughs.

I do not what exactly is so hilarious about Stilgar in the movie, especially after his words clearly show he is getting crazy about Paul. Also people laughing show that humans do not realise how fanatics are dangerous. In real life it is the same. I know because I’ve lived with this kind of people.
Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (the one who tested Paul with the Gom Jabbar) is Jessica's biological mother/teacher. Jessica's parentage was kept secret from her as well from the Baron. Only the higher up Reverend Mothers knew of this, no one else.

The reason that they didn't use the laser on the copter right away is because in Dune, hitting a shield with a laser causes a nuke-like detonation that would kill everybody that was in that fight, Fremen or Harkonnen alike, including the person holding the laser weapon.
Great reaction, guys ! Now go see it in the big screen. I went to see Dune 2 in 4DX with my son. When the grandfather worm appeared, the whole theater started to shake like an earthquake was taking place. My seat was bucking like a bronco trying to throw me off! I needed a seatbelt, and the seat was slamming into my back. It just got more violent when Paul got on the worm. I reached for my son, concerned for his safety. I found him screaming with joy, having the time of his life. As Paul rode the worm, my son and I let go of our seat, raised our arms and raised our feet off the floor. The whole theater felt as if it was to going to tear itself to pieces. The music was deafening beyond belief. My son and I rode the worm with Paul. It was an incredible and exhilarating experience. Someone should make a riding of the worm amusement ride!
One thing the films didn't explain is how the shields worked. You can't use a laser (lasgun) on shields because it would cause an atomic explosion, killing both the shield wearer and the one with the laser. So when the Fremen were attacking the spice harvesters, if they shot them with the laser, the ornithopters would get them and they couldn't shoot the ornithopters with the laser as they had the shield...
Keep in mind House Corrino and his army The Sardaukar have been in power for 10,000 years ! They are the premier fighting force in the galaxy. Up until they meet the Fremen.
It helps show Frank Herbert's idea that the human culture of the galaxy has stagnated, with little or no technological or philosophical change in 10,000 years, too.
In the book, Chani stands with and supports Paul all the way. And she and Princess Urulan understand the details of a political marriage. Chani will have Paul's children and.... Well, I don't want to spoil it all for you. But the restrictions of cinema compelled the director to make some changes and switch a few things around. If Chani just sticks with Paul, a lot of tension vanishes. So much more. But the basics hew close enough to the book.
I mean you literally spoiled it for anyone reading... At least edit your comment and add: "SPOILER" before the sentence: "Chani will have Paul's children and..."

I was exhausted too after watching Dune 2 in IMAX. It was an amazing experience but so much to take in: visual impression, the sound, all the things happening in the film. I needed half an hour to process everything afterward. I wouldn't have minded if they had split this first book into three parts.
And best supporting actress for Rebecca Ferguson, and possibly best lead actor for Chalamet. Plus the practically-guarunteed awards for cinematography, score, sound design, and visual effects.
I can't imagine any movies going that well after Messiah. Possibly a mashup of Children and God-Emperor? I know the unfilmable is occasionally filmed, but the other two canonical books strike me as really unfilmable.
They are a handful of movies that have come out recently that are must see IMAX experiences; Top Gun Maverick, The Batman, Dune and Dune Part Two. Absolutely incredible movies, cinematic masterpieces
The reason they don't use the beam weapon on the Thopter is because the interaction between the beam and the shield is catastrophic for everyone involved. The reason they van use it on the harvester is because they don't use shields because shields cause worms to attack in a frenzy.
Lol watching The Answer put his fingertips together and whispering under his breath before their first kiss is just adorable lol The realisation in his eyes as Paul says the thing about being equal to Chani, you can see his reaction building from that moment. Love It. So nice e to see guys excited about romance in films rather than just rolling their eyes or making a joke
The part where Paul rides the Worm for the first time is all practical, they had a stuntman ride on a physical copy of the worms top while they pelted sand at them and used a wind machine
The set design and the filming in infrared and in imax put this movie in a next level tier. There are no movies like it right now. It is amazingly unique in such small details but huge in such impactful ways. Perfection is in the details. Every actor in this franchise is exactly who should play their role. The casting director alone deserves an Oscar.
I have such admiration & gratitude for how well done both movies are & the care that you can tell was put into making them. I've been impressed with Timothee's acting for a while, but when I watched Beautiful Boy with him and Steve Carell...I was blown away. It's a bit of a tough watch, particularly if you're close to anyone who suffers from addiction but he was INCREDIBLE in that movie & Steve put on a beautiful performance as his dad too.
Its so fun watching people come into this world and love it. This is the 5th version of this I've been exposed to and I have never read the books. 2 games, a movie and mini series. I really hope they make more. There's an older Knights movie with Timothy that I was first introduced to him as an actor "The King".
To me, this felt like watching an incredible documentary! Like this was a real life adventure that we were just tagging along with. Absolutely incredible stuff for such a extravagant Sci-Fi movie, to be able to feel like this could've actually happened! 10/10, best movie I've ever seen!
It's not made very clear, but the atomics are used on the shield wall... the formation of mountains and rocks that protect the city from sand storms and worms. With the opening created by the atomics... both the storm and the worms are allowed to attack directly.
I noticed the allegory between Paul and a particular religious figure that was done really well. LOVED this film, seen it in the cinema. The "turn" when he goes south doing his big speech amongst the Fremen I felt my blood pressure go up, goose bumps & it felt powerful. Good edit so you kept a lot of the movie in, great reactions!
They couldn’t use the lasers first in the scene where they first started attacking the crawlers. Lasers against shields causes a nuclear reaction. that’s why they had to use surface to air artillery to take out the copter first or it would take out the Freman with the lasers, preventing them from being able to take out the crawler.👍
The "in-universe" reason the Fremen do not use lasers to take down the ornitopter is that lasers tend to cause a nuclear explosion when hitting a shield... The harvester was not protected by a shield because while active shields tend to attract and enrage worms. So the Fremen knew it was safe to use the laser against the harvester while very dangerous to use one against the ornitopter.

I was very impressed by Rebecca Ferguson in this movie. It's a shame she's such an underrated actress because she's so amazing and charismatic in every movie she does !

Dave Bautista is like the Anti Rock, takes roles he finds interesting and fun for himself and is based and lovable as an actor.
Also, I love how Stilgar's "LISAN AL GAIB!" is almost comedic relief through the entire film, until that last shot of him boarding the Ship and him screaming it with that fanatical look in his eyes.
Aslo also, it's never really explained in the Movies but, the reason Swords/Knives are used in combat, and why they didn't use the Las Guns on the Thopter is because, when a Las Gun's beam hits a Shield, it sets off an explosion akin to a Nuclear blast, because reasons, so Las Guns are used against unshielded targets/fortifications, the Crawler didn't have Shields as they also attract Worms and drive them into a frenzy when in the Desert.
He's actually interested in acting and being a serious actor. The Rock is just concerned with being a "cool" superstar.

The "fun" thing about lasguns and shields is that you can't tell at what end the nuclear explosion will occur.
I don't get where this "Stilgar is comedic relief" is coming from.
There is nothing even remotely funny about his transformation from a fanatic to a zealot. It's just sad and frightening.
Just for clarity's sake, the Kwizat Hadorach (KH) is the real chosen one the Bene Gesserit (BG) wanted to lead. A male BG that can see both pasts of male and female, along with the future, and the BG want that person to lead the Imperium (and they want to control him). Paul was also trained as a fighter and politician. When he drinks the water of life, it is the final step for him to become the KH (though he's arguably only a psuedo-KH since Jessica had him one generation early - The BG wanted Jessica to have a daughter with Leto Atreides, who would then have a male child, the KH with Feyd-Rautha).
So, the Lisan Al-Gaib (LA) is the made up prophecy by the BG to control them as a people. That's why Jessica has the rundown on how to take over their culture. She didn't really want to, until she drank the Water of Life. When that happens, she's much more deterministic, as is Paul. She has the daughter that tells her what to do. Paul has crystal clear potential futures. They see the possibilities and what must happen for their best case scenario, so they do those things without question. It's a major part of why Paul switches so drastically upon drinking the Water of Life.

I thought Paul wasn't "pseudo" KH, he just simply refused his role, and paid for it with his foresight
The reason they planned for Feyd to marry fem-Paul is because KH needed the Harkonan bloodline in him, but Paul already did because his mom is Harkonan, which is why he could become the KH at all. If his mom wasn’t Harkonan, he couldn’t be KH.

In the expanded Dune books, the Kwisatz Haderach mother (the one in charge of the KH breeding program) wants to refine the genes from the Harkonnen stock and that resulted in Jessica's birth.
Then they essentially partnered a Harkonnen gene holder with an Atreides one and they were caught surprised that a male offspring was their long awaited KH.
Even Mohiam failed to take that into account when Paul showed extraordinary resiliency during the Gom Jabbar test.
The BG sure were full of ego.

His command of prescience was a bit weaker though and the Golden Path was supposed to be the way for him to fully wield the powers of a KH.

The worm riding scene in theaters was brilliant. Love the time spent on build up and patience during such a packed film. Certain theater audio systems during it vibrate you to your core lol
This movie really showed me that there’s a CRAZY different from theater to theater in sound quality. Some places do their sound design much better than others.
I actually got goosebumps seeing it the first time. Steven Spielberg was interviewing Denis for a Director's Guild podcast and said about the sandworm riding scene "it's one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever!" That's some seriously high praise.
Home theater systems do so as well.
I have a pretty decent one (not overpowered for the space I have) and it was quite the treat.
With Dune 2 crossing $710m worldwide, confident that if Dune 3 by Denis Villeneuve is on par with Dune 2, it could have a shot at $1bn worldwide which would be crazy for a Dune movie!

Yeah, the amount of projectiles was certainly a difference. The effect of the object exploding inside the shield before it blinks out is cool.
One reason the technology seems so different is that 10,000 years earlier Mankind won their war against their equivalent of Skynet and "thinking machines" were outlawed. People turned instead to developing the human mind leading to groups like the Bene Gesserit, the Mentats (human calculators like Thufir Hawat), and the Guild Navigators.
This is what's the most fascinating about the Dune universe to me. I love the way you phrased that, beating Skynet.

The reveal about Jessica being Baron Harkonnen's daughter is only briefly mentioned in the book. Baron Harkonnen is homosexual and has no known biological children which is why he relies mostly on his nephews Rabban (Batista) and Feyd-Rautha (Butler) as his surrogate sons. It is mentioned that he allowed himself one time to be seduced by a Bene Gesserit who would then go on to give birth to Jessica. The major concern about Alia (Paul's sister) being exposed to the Water of Life in the womb is that it turns her into an "Abomination", a pre-born Reverand Mother with the power and vision of all the memories of previous RMs tied to her bloodline. This makes her vulnerable to being possessed by the egos of her ancestors (including Baron Harkonnen) because she doesn't have a strong sense of her own identity; how can she when she's still just a foetus at this point. This goes onto be the main story for the third book Children of Dune.

It goes into it a lot in the prequels written by Brian Herbert. Pretty much got blackmailed into it, twice, and then was strategically given an STD that transformed his body from god-esque to what it is now, deteriorating it to the point where he's too weak to walk without suspensor help.

The way Villaneuve and his cinematographer frame every shot is incredible. It’s so minimalist and yet so great in scale and detailed at the same time. In theaters this was just an incredible watch
I'm biased because Villeneuve is a hometown boy, and I first saw his shit when I was a teenager and when he was barely a full adult... but besides his obvious storytelling abilities, the guy has an eye for talent and for surrounding himself with talented people.

My reaction to DUNE p2 was to go out to the lobby and buy another ticket for the next available theater showing. I saw this film 3 times in theater, all IMAX. No Regrets (Regerts)!

This is the only other series that i've watched so much that its getting closer to my lord of the rings binges through out my life. I've legitimately seen LOTR 14 times (the entire trilogy) from memory, other times, it was in the background while my friends and I were gaming. I've seen Dune 2 at least a total of 7 times now, i love it so much. This is the 2nd movie series that has done that to me, and beat the matrix.

Paul actually used the atomics to destroy the cliffs that would protect arakeen from the sandstorms. It also opened up a third attack point for the fremen.
56:05 I find weird that they chose to make the Emperor call Leto weak in the movies.
The Emperor did not think Leto was weak, quite the opposite, he admired and even envied Leto, for many reasons... he was popular among the other houses, had a son to heir, etc., unlike him (The Emperor) who seems powerful, but in reality is only being controlled by the Bene Gesserit who chose to not grant him a son, for example. The Emperor even wished that Irulan had been born earlier so that she could've been older and married Leto.
I think he did that as a final desperate attempt to kill Paul and save himself. He called his father weak, knowing that Paul will have to challenge him (or his champion, because he was old) to a duel.
Yeah he was lying and quite obviously so. Leto was a threat to him he knew it. I veiw it as more of an attempt to goad Paul.
I interpreted it as a taunt out of anger, frustration and unwillingness to accept his defeat. For the same reason he said that Paul should bow at his feed. It is dishonest, but he can't help himself but to spite Paul for daring to challenge his place as emperor in such a disrespectful manner.
I am so glad that Jessica is so important, characters like her usually die as part of the origin story, not so here. I love how powerful she becomes, she's almost galadriel

They didn't really go into it, but there were absolutely moments when Answer and the Oak were hootin' and hollerin' and Mason seemed to have some kind of haunted look on his face. Not sure if I read it right, but I think he felt it
@@ladrac198 Yeah, it's surprising that so many of them are rooting for a man and his mother who declare a "holy war" and whose followers are portrayed as an army of fanatics. Perhaps Denis Villeneuve should have used the original terminology from the books: "jihad". This would probably have set off many more alarm bells in the Western consciousness because of the word's more negative connotations. Although it and a holy war or crusade mean basically the same thing.
For many reactors it doesn't pop. And they actually changed some moments to make it MORE obvious. Still flies over the head.
Messiah is going to break a lot of "casual viewer's" hearts I think. I hope the 3rd book gets adapted as well, but I'm not sure about God Emperor - that might be too out there for most people.
52:32 Just FYI about the atomics, in the lore atomics can't be used directly against houses because of a long held agreement called the "The Great Convention". Using atomics against another house would obviously destroy the agreement and cause all out armageddon so Paul smartly used them to destroy the barrier wall allowing the storm and the worms into the basin.
24:10 - Pulling up the front edge of the worm's ring segments exposes sensitive tissue underneath. Sand severely irritates this exposed tissue, so the worm can't dive and must remain at the surface, and will roll to keep the exposed bit as far from the sand as possible. By shifting the hooks laterally, the rider can force the worm to roll, which also causes it to turn.
At the end, when Paul tells Stilgar, "Lead them to Paradise". It is said with sadness because this is the terrible fate he saw if he went south and tried to avoid. He now realizes there was no avoiding the death of billions because of him. The only way to avoid this outcome would have been to just roll over and give up, letting the Harkonnens and the Emperor win.
Spoiler alert: This is also why I think Paul wasn't able to follow the golden path. He emotionally wasn't strong enough to deal with all the death and destruction that was needed to shape the universe the way it needed to be like his son, Leto II (God Emperor of Dune) was able to do later.

Leto II is a sociopath, thanks to his upbringing, and he has no problem becoming a heartless dictator hyperfocused on the ideal of humanity in the future, while causing untold suffering to billions in his thousands of years of rule. Again, Herbert warning the reader about the awful reality of authoritarian leaders. That so many Leto fans try to explain away his monstrous behavior just goes to reinforce how psychology has noted a marked uptick in antisocial personality disorders in the last 50 years.
@@rikk319 And yet, Leto II is what was needed to save humanity from extinction. There have been great leaders and terrible leaders who were sociopaths. There will always be need of people like that to make the tough choices when times are hard, the rest of the time, keep those people as far away from power as you can, until they are needed again.

@@rikk319 You forgot one specific point : Dune was already been terraformed by Fremens for centuries by the time the Atreides arrived. It's not shown in the movies but is described in the book. So the desert will eventually fade, and Dune will become green and blue again, destroying the worms and the spice production with or without intervention.
So, in a nutshell, the Empire will crumble, revolts will be repressed by force, people will starve to death and humanity will return to pre-industrial time in no time on every planet. Don't forget there will be in the first time a politic mess and a struggle for power since the treachery of the Emperor will be revealed by Harkonnens. So you have to choose between two directions :
1) Let things go its way, doing nothing, and hundreds of billions of people dying of isolation, war and starvation in the long term.
-> no more central power ;
-> no space-time cuts in galactic travels ;
-> maybe the slow and final end of humanity ?
2) Doing something to unite humanity by holy war, dozens of billions people dying by your action in the short term, but saving ultimately hundreds of billions dying the worst way possible.
-> still a remnant of central power for some time (until technology has advanced enough to travel in space without spice) ;
-> humanity reforged without the influence of the spice, all types of prophets and precognition leaders.
For the point of view of Paul and his successor, it's a moral conflict of the "Trolley problem" in the grand scale.
*An utilitarianism moral dilemma,* which cannot be comprehend by the all the people suffering and dying because of the choice of one single man to turn the direction of the train.
So, yeah, Leto II is a sociopath who chooses to "save" humanity from its demise. He's not doing good obviously, he's doing bad for the greater good. Maybe there would have been better options, if the Bene Gesserit had not played with the lignages for so long to create extrasensory peoples, or if they didn't played with religion and create an ultimate fanatic army ready to leach on the Empire with or without the existence or the survival of their messiah... That's why Leto II is so obsessed and angry towards the Bene Gesserit, his dictatorship style is because of their past choices, but he's not mean to destroy this group but teach them the harshest lesson possible, to let them evolve the best way possible (and the two books after is about the point of view of the Bene Gesserit).
It's not one man fault, *it's the fault of all humanity until this point in the story and the dependence of spice to stabilize the society.* Leto II get humanity off spice to free itself of strong leaders, false beliefs, and extrasensory people. He's not a hero, he's not a good guy, hes' not a great leader, he's a martyr willingly sacrificing his humanity to save humanity. Was he right ? Nobody will never know in Dune, nor the readers, because it's obvious Frank Herbert wanted to reveal something about another space related threats in one or two more books but had not the time to do so... which is sad.
@@Zagrakhen If spice leads to the problems, then perhaps humans losing space travel and existing on separate planets would be best. How exactly would that lead to extinction any sooner? Humans would evolve separately on each planet, and not have to worry about some over-arching despotism running everything in the galaxy.
I've read the books, too. I just find Herbert's premises about human evolution and extinction and there being "only one way forward" with the Golden Path rather absurd. You don't teach "humanity" because "humanity" isn't a hive mind. Each new generation, each new individual, has to be educated to develop properly. There's no way to teach a "lesson" and have humanity learn it for all time, because "humanity" is a concept. Human beings, each individual one, is the reality.
In my opinion, Leto II was even more misguided than Paul. If Herbert was trying to show how a single human trying to make decisions for everyone else was a very bad idea, he succeeded. If he was trying to show that Leto II was ultimately right, then he's plowing under everything he taught about charismatic leaders being bad in the first two books. Either way, it shows that he had some good ideas, but getting your philosophical lessons from fiction isn't always the best idea.
52:15 - That wasn't a warning shot. The capitol city Arakeen is built within a ring of mountains called the Shield Wall, so named because it keeps the sandstorms and worms at bay. Paul used the atomic weapons to blow a hole in the Shield Wall right as a particularly nasty storm hit, allowing the storm through the mountains and creating a passage for worms carrying an army of Fremen to reach the city.
LOVED this movie. The casting was fantastic and I was just thinking in my head of all the actors I recognized lol 😂 also Rebeca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica SO WELL she made me feel the pain and torment she was going through after drink the “Water of Life” and the fact she could totally switch from protective mother to a tormented souls with over a thousand Reverend Mothers speaking to her at once is incredibly impressive.
I appreciate the "twelfth century" reference much more than you might expect. They really teased the "cowbell" thing with the "More. More. Give me more." And yes, Chani comes comically close to saying her secret name is Zendaya.
You should see Timothy in "The King". Saw it years ago and his performance in that was why his performance in Dune wasn't such a shock to me. "The King" is fantastic.

Even Paul’s father Leto is related to the Baron, if I’m not mistaken the Harkonnens and the Ateidis somewhat share ancestry, in the first movie the Leto poison scene, the Baron calls him cousin.
If I remember correctly in the book that's something high families call each other, it doesn't necessarily mean actual relation.

48:08 The Fremen warrior is probably the most underrated actor in this film. The entire scene rests on him believably turning to Paul's side, and you can see his confusion and defiance become feelings of wonder and fanatical loyalty-all sold with body language and a single word.

Loved your reactions as usual, thanks guys! Just something to keep in mind - the author, Frank Herbert, intended everyone to realize that Paul is not the hero. He's the villain of the story. Dune is, at heart, a cautionary Sci Fi tale about Fascism and Theocracy. Paul is someone who readily embraces Revenge. And he voluntarily turns his back on the Atreides way his Father taught him, to embrace the legacy of his Harkonnen bloodline, and seize power for himself.
This movie wraps the first book in the series, Dune. The next film will begin into DUNE MESSIAH, one of the sequels. Let's just say that Herbert kept trying to get people to realize that the anti-hero Paul was a villain, so expect that the farther into the story that you go, the harder and harder it should be to justify Paul's actions, or to be on his side. When people ask "What villain do you love to root for in all of Sci Fi or Fantasy?" After you see Dune, you really can only ever answer "Paul Muad'Dib". Because we love to be on his side, but once you follow the full arc of the first book, it becomes abundantly clear that he sacrificed who he was and how he was raised in order to pursue an agenda his father would never have sanctioned, and in the process, even knowing that he would cause billions of people to die of starvation, he still chose his own success over the well-being of hundreds of millions of innocents. Muad'Dib is the single greatest Anti-Hero ever written. And the sad thing is... most folks miss that completely. And end up cheering for Fascism, Cruelty, and Jihad. Which is the term used in the books.
And the ironic thing is that Dune is the underpinning for all modern SciFi, the same way that Lord of the Rings is the underpinning for all modern Fantasy.

Except for the material that is based on Asimov's Foundation trilogy, which was voted in it's own time (40-50s) as the best science fiction story ever told. Star Wars and even Dune draws some from it, though there is no real central protagonist, as it's a plot-driven story, not character-driven, and thus very different in that way from most sci-fi stories that came after it.

Is it really that hard to believe that people prefer Fascism and Jihad over Feudalism? At least in those extremes you have a choice, you can be a follower, a bystander, or a rebel. Under Feudalism you are born into it, and that's it. Many people loved and followed Napoleon in his imperialism because he dismantled Feudalism. Anyway, for the Fremen, Paul is a hero that finally took them out of a harsh life and threat of genocide, and led them into power and hope. For the empire he is a villain that is destroying the status quo, a status quo that is being enforced by corruption and fiefdom. Paul is not a villain, arguably he's an anti hero, and the novels show us how terrible the existence of a Messiah is for anyone who is not following him.

At 13yrs old when i saw Return of the King at the cinema, i thought I'd soon see films that were done so well & make me feel the same way as the LOTR trilogy. I didn't think it would take 20yrs until the Dune films but I'm glad i got to experience that same feeling again.
I thought exactly the same thing! The LOTR trilogy had been my #1 favourite for twenty years... Now they're tied with Dune! I just hope Messiah will be equally incredible.

It goes to show you that whenever someone says about a movie, or sports star, "We'll never see something or someone as good as this again", it's just a tired trope and very self-centered, as it almost always focuses on someone or something from their own childhood or lifetime, and never someone or something from history, or the chance that it will very likely be surpassed at some point in the future.

These movies were so well made and entertaining and I'm so glad Villeneuve made the choices he did to clarify the themes from the books.
What I find most interesting about the "Dune" series is that the overarching theme is how propaganda about a "Messiah" and a the manipulation of people by a charismatic leader leads to problems.
The fact that Paul becomes the unwilling leader of a Holy War that leads to the genocide of millions is wild to me. One hopes that he's on the right path, but we find out that by the end of this movie, his mother and the people around him led him to be a tryannical and blood soaked emperor.
So, the people Paul replaced were better? The Emperor, The Baron, The Bene Geserrit? Paul could see all possible futures. Even though the path he was forced to take was going to be bloody. Humanity survived. If the Bene Gesserit got "The One" they were hoping for. The one they had complete control over. Would that be better? The Reverend Mother was willing to sacrifices a whole House. And you think it would be better to have her in control of the "Ultimate Power" in the Universe? Think of our own past...... What about the tens of millions of Humans killed in WW2. Was horrible. Mass destruction on a scale not seen before. But would it have been better to let the Nazis win? I do not think so. Paul was a good man. One who tried to do the best he could. But sometimes the best is still horrible. He could have run from the responsibility. But instead, he did what he thought was the best he could do. Given the circumstances.

The knee-jerk silly reactions to Stilgar's descent into religious obsession and fanaticism isn't funny but heartbreaking. Taking his tragic character as a sign of comedy is shallow and depressing, considering where his character ends up and what the author (and director I think) was trying to convey.
@@rikk319 Director and editors definitely played up the religious fanaticism for laughs, because they don't respect religion and they look down on the religious. They had an opportunity to show how scary devotion is, how terrifying fanaticism can get, and instead they played it off for cheap laughs.
@@Eagle3302PL actually they showed his transformation in quiet scary way. I think it may be cultural difference, but I’ve seen Dune 3 times in cinema, and no one laughed. I do not what exactly is so hilarious about Stilgar in the movie, especially after his words clearly show he is getting crazy about Paul.
Also people laughing show that humans do not realise how fanatics are dangerous. In real life it is the same. I know because I’ve lived with this kind of people.
Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (the one who tested Paul with the Gom Jabbar) is Jessica's biological mother/teacher. Jessica's parentage was kept secret from her as well from the Baron. Only the higher up Reverend Mothers knew of this, no one else.
OHH I didn’t know she was Jessica’s mother. That makes sense considering their relationship in the first book.

The reason that they didn't use the laser on the copter right away is because in Dune, hitting a shield with a laser causes a nuke-like detonation that would kill everybody that was in that fight, Fremen or Harkonnen alike, including the person holding the laser weapon.
Great reaction, guys ! Now go see it in the big screen. I went to see Dune 2 in 4DX with my son. When the grandfather worm appeared, the whole theater started to shake like an earthquake was taking place. My seat was bucking like a bronco trying to throw me off! I needed a seatbelt, and the seat was slamming into my back. It just got more violent when Paul got on the worm. I reached for my son, concerned for his safety. I found him screaming with joy, having the time of his life. As Paul rode the worm, my son and I let go of our seat, raised our arms and raised our feet off the floor. The whole theater felt as if it was to going to tear itself to pieces. The music was deafening beyond belief. My son and I rode the worm with Paul. It was an incredible and exhilarating experience. Someone should make a riding of the worm amusement ride!
One thing the films didn't explain is how the shields worked. You can't use a laser (lasgun) on shields because it would cause an atomic explosion, killing both the shield wearer and the one with the laser. So when the Fremen were attacking the spice harvesters, if they shot them with the laser, the ornithopters would get them and they couldn't shoot the ornithopters with the laser as they had the shield...

Keep in mind House Corrino and his army The Sardaukar have been in power for 10,000 years ! They are the premier fighting force in the galaxy. Up until they meet the Fremen.
It helps show Frank Herbert's idea that the human culture of the galaxy has stagnated, with little or no technological or philosophical change in 10,000 years, too.
The Sardaukar didn't really have to do any real fighting for a long time by this point though. They were all reputation.

Well, I don't want to spoil it all for you. But the restrictions of cinema compelled the director to make some changes and switch a few things around. If Chani just sticks with Paul, a lot of tension vanishes. So much more. But the basics hew close enough to the book.

@@Kawi-RR Not make any sense at all? She isn't the same as the book, but within the context of the film she makes clear sense. Her group of Fremen are skeptics, not fundamentalists. Calling her angsty or a crybaby misses the point of the film's arc in regards to that.

I was exhausted too after watching Dune 2 in IMAX. It was an amazing experience but so much to take in: visual impression, the sound, all the things happening in the film. I needed half an hour to process everything afterward. I wouldn't have minded if they had split this first book into three parts.

I can't imagine any movies going that well after Messiah. Possibly a mashup of Children and God-Emperor? I know the unfilmable is occasionally filmed, but the other two canonical books strike me as really unfilmable.
They are a handful of movies that have come out recently that are must see IMAX experiences; Top Gun Maverick, The Batman, Dune and Dune Part Two.

The reason they don't use the beam weapon on the Thopter is because the interaction between the beam and the shield is catastrophic for everyone involved. The reason they van use it on the harvester is because they don't use shields because shields cause worms to attack in a frenzy.

The part where Paul rides the Worm for the first time is all practical, they had a stuntman ride on a physical copy of the worms top while they pelted sand at them and used a wind machine
The set design and the filming in infrared and in imax put this movie in a next level tier. There are no movies like it right now. It is amazingly unique in such small details but huge in such impactful ways. Perfection is in the details. Every actor in this franchise is exactly who should play their role. The casting director alone deserves an Oscar.
I have such admiration & gratitude for how well done both movies are & the care that you can tell was put into making them. I've been impressed with Timothee's acting for a while, but when I watched Beautiful Boy with him and Steve Carell...I was blown away. It's a bit of a tough watch, particularly if you're close to anyone who suffers from addiction but he was INCREDIBLE in that movie & Steve put on a beautiful performance as his dad too.

Its so fun watching people come into this world and love it. This is the 5th version of this I've been exposed to and I have never read the books. 2 games, a movie and mini series. I really hope they make more. There's an older Knights movie with Timothy that I was first introduced to him as an actor "The King".

To me, this felt like watching an incredible documentary! Like this was a real life adventure that we were just tagging along with. Absolutely incredible stuff for such a extravagant Sci-Fi movie, to be able to feel like this could've actually happened! 10/10, best movie I've ever seen!

It's not made very clear, but the atomics are used on the shield wall... the formation of mountains and rocks that protect the city from sand storms and worms. With the opening created by the atomics... both the storm and the worms are allowed to attack directly.
The wormriders open up the scales on the Worms to expose its sensitive areas. This irritates the worm and stops it submerging back into the sand.

I noticed the allegory between Paul and a particular religious figure that was done really well. LOVED this film, seen it in the cinema. The "turn" when he goes south doing his big speech amongst the Fremen I felt my blood pressure go up, goose bumps & it felt powerful.

They couldn’t use the lasers first in the scene where they first started attacking the crawlers. Lasers against shields causes a nuclear reaction. that’s why they had to use surface to air artillery to take out the copter first or it would take out the Freman with the lasers, preventing them from being able to take out the crawler.👍

The "in-universe" reason the Fremen do not use lasers to take down the ornitopter is that lasers tend to cause a nuclear explosion when hitting a shield... The harvester was not protected by a shield because while active shields tend to attract and enrage worms. So the Fremen knew it was safe to use the laser against the harvester while very dangerous to use one against the ornitopter.
