- Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Dune: Part Two (2024). The spice must flow and Denis Villeneuve sure brought the fire with this one!
This Epic Sci-Fi lives up to it's genre. The sheer scope of some of the shots in this are breathtaking. Greig Fraser's cinematography is elegant, beautiful and immediately transports the viewer right back to Arrakis. This is the next chapter in the Paul Atreides saga and we can honestly say we were surprised, not only did they hit the level of quality we were expecting, they surpassed it. This was truly a cinematic feast!
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, "Dune: Part Two" (2024) picks up where its predecessor left off, following Paul Atreides as he embraces his destiny as a leader and warrior on the sands of Arrakis.
The visual effects were top notch, especially during that Sandworm sequence!
With a stacked cast that was able to deliver some solid performance this film has a lot of elements that we found enjoyable. Timothée Chalamet is fantastic as Paul Atreides. He gave us a nuanced performances that left us wanting more and asking ourselves: what comes next? Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan all do such a phenomenal job with their roles.
Austin Butler is eery, creepy and magnetic all at the same time as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. You never know when the guy is gonna snap!

y'all should check out 'Dune' from the 80's to see how it holds up to these versions....I didn't get to see this in theaters so y'alls reactions & commentary gave me the same vibe which I appreciate

just fyi, D U N E freek ah zoid again, in the gladiatorial combat scene the color is shot that way to depict the atmosphere and the type of star that orbits G Prime, the star shines differently there, this is the way it looks all the time on the surface.

She is a Reverend Mother but more. The sister of Paul. Not as powerful as he but still very powerful from the Sisterhood breeding program. In the books she can do a few things even Paul cannot.
She’s not a Reverend Mother. She has all the powers of one but no control over the Other Memories. And sadly that will be her undoing.

In the final duel, I love the way Paul has incorporated Jamis’s behaviors: the catchphrase but also beating his chest for focus. The friendship with Jamis that never was, was this bittersweet element running through several scenes
I was a little disappointed we didn’t get the full funeral scene for Jamis. In the book, the Fremen do it by having each person in turn say “I was a friend of Jamis”, then speak about their friendship. Paul has to do this as well. The visions add this wonderful dimension to it.
I like this dynamic more after he drinks the water of life. It really encapsulates that Paul is living in and being impacting by possible futures as well as his present. In the timeline that he gets visions of , the one where he’s a friend of Jamis. This one makes a big impact on him in the film. The changes in him after he drinks the water is because of the knowledge he gains. He is resolute in his actions to become the one because he experiences all the bad outcomes in his visions and this even makes him appear cold towards Chaani
Jamis was a friend and taught Paul the way of the desert. But the catch is, the desert is cruel and the way to master it even crueller.
Furthermore, Jamis serves as a mentor, through Paul's dreams. You can say that the ways of the desert were in fact learned from Jamis for Paul, even though we don't really see it spelled out, it actually happens in dreams, where Paul is looking at all those future paths, and in many of them Jamis is alive and mentors Paul. That's how he already knows so much when the Fremen meet Paul. Subtle and amazing, for the few eyes and minds that will catch this.
Its such a shame that Jamis would die so early, since the desired path "willed it" to be that way, but even from the grave, the dreams work in different ways, which pretty much make Jamis way more alive and useful than one would think.
I think in his vision of the holy war in the first movie, Jamis was with Paul on the ship looking over Caladan. Like he is in a way always by his side.
Javier Bardem channeled every single Arab uncle in this movie, his little happy feet dance when he hugs Muad'Dib as he becomes one of them is so cute

When Paul said "bring them to paradise" He was so reluctant that he really didn't want to say it

In books Paul relised, that whether he wins or dies in his duel against Feyd Rautha i irrelevant. Not even his death will not stop the war. If he wins they will think him unbeatable and if he dies, they woul think, he sacraficed for them.
They will in fact lead over 60 billion people to “paradise” in the course of 12 years

If you can find them look for the great John Schoeherr's original illustrations of Stilgar (and others) in the first publication of DUNE (Analog magazine). Hugely influential.
It's sad the movie picked Stilgar to collectively represent the Fremen's relationship with Paul, because in the book he's not that cartoonish. Paul is bummed out to see his friend becoming a disciple, but it's not overt like that.

@@alanfoster6589 I get the logic, but I would have used a throwaway character instead of Stilgar. If you read the books, you appreciate his strength of character. Definitely wouldn't use him as a rubber chicken just to make a point.
Paul making the Emperor himself kneel and kiss the ring of the man he betrayed is such a vindication for the audience, one of my favorite scenes in the film.
I was disappointed that kiss was lukewarm. I would have made the Emperor bow again and put some spit on it. 🤣😂

For me that vindication scene was when he uses the voice on reverend mother mohaim, that was just so fucking fire 🔥
It's so powerful that despite being able to make the emperor do it with the voice he doesn't use it instead willing the emperor to his knees. Even better when it's straight after displaying his use of the voice on mother mohaim.
Important detail: When Feyd mentions he had a dream about the witch, she didn’t plant that in him. That was a clue he also has foresight in his dreams like Paul
Edit: Also, Paul’s “May thy knife chip and shatter” wasn’t a callback to Duncan. It was a callback to Jamis who had his first kill in a duel against, as Jamis said to him. Remember in all of his visions the two main people he saw were Chani and Jamis before taking the water of life and called upon him from the afterlife in the desert, as he was his guide in the desert to fremen, before they even met. Which means he was guiding Paul from the afterlife all along, even before Paul met and defeated him.
Actually that part was a callback to both. The salute he does with his blade before the fight, is the same salute that Duncan did before fighting the Sardaukar in Part 1, while the words, "May thy knife chip and shatter", as you say, are from Jamis.

I agree and I felt like I was one of the few that noticed that. Definitely shows that there were multiple Kwizats Haderach candidates. But I think what they were referring to was him doing Duncan’s salute. I love that he combined Jamis and Duncan’s things tho.
@@McKamikazeHighlander he did that in part 1 before fighting Jamis too. That salute is part of his training, but yes also a salute. That was already established in part 1 tho.

Marriage is for political purposes...Chani becomes his concubine. In the books Jessica tells Chani that history will call them wife, as Jessica was concubine to Duke Leto I. Remember, he foresees that Chani will come to understand.
Yeah, but I don't love that. I understand about the political marriage, but Channi accepting who Paul has become when he is not exactly who she fell in love with in the beginning doesn't ring true.
The book is even more grim than the movie. Chani is OK with the deal because it serves their purposes. They made Chani a lot more critical and outspoken to hammer the point down, that the ending isn't something to celebrate. Same reason Jessica is a lot more sinister in the movie.

She is from a culture where concubines and multiple wives is normal. Making her having western sensibilities was unnecessary.

The spice harvesters from the harkonnen look just like gigantic Ticks...
Love the vehicle designs and how they show us the scale in comparison to people!
Fits so well...leeching off the land, like actual ticks do to animals or people...and you have the Ornithopters that look like dragonflies. This is what good writing is all about.
IIRC the Harkonnen design for the films is based off insects, so this checks out.
Yes, and this ties back into how the body of Baron is tossed into the desert and insects start crawling on him, thus now the karmic retribution is paid back for all he took from the desert.
And their suits in the beginning look like big ants walking across the land. So when you see the barons dead body in the desert with ants crawling over him, its like he was given a taste of his own medicine.

@@wackyvorlonI don't understand why people keep assuming this. Modern movie technology effects and camera work can make a cg puppet of a two year old very believable today. Use baby pictures of Anya Taylor Joy as the model. If we can de age RDJ or Michael Douglas, we can get a proper 2 year old or newborn Alia. They had every chance today to make it work, and pussed out. Alia deserved better.
@@faded1to3black honestly, this is an incredibly hard undertaking. And the times I’ve seen it done it has usually been jarring. When it comes to the human face even very small mistakes are glaring. IMO they made the right choice.

This sequence was shot during the eclipse in Jordan in late 2022. The cinematographer calculated the exact time and angle to shoot this from to get the lighting and composition to make this work.
The insert shots of the eclipse are practical too. Pretty great.

It's funny but when you rewatch part 1 and part 2, it's tearjerking how much Paul's and Stilgar's character changed.
Paul loses his innocence and becomes more vengeful while Stilgar stops being a parental figure and sees Paul as a divine messiah
It kills me cause its the split second of Stilgar being regular, but its like he woke up from dozing 😂

Remember, we are told that the prophecy is artificial, planted by the Bene Gesserit. However no matter how hard Paul tries to avoid following it, circumstances make him do things that lead to the fulfillment of the prophecy.
Which raises the question…. Is the prophecy really artificial?
Also, dont judge Paul too hastily about the arranged marriage and Chani. In the kneeling scene, Paul didnt even look at Irulan and turned straight to Chani. And the books explore this dynamic in much more detail. Chani is the only one for him.

The "fake prophecy" came from the Benis. What we do not know is was the prophecy a "seeing" from a Beni or an outright fabricated one?
@@bullpup33in the books, it’s a standard prophecy that has been planted by the Missionaria Protectiva on many worlds. The complication comes from the fact that it was planted a long time ago, and while Jessica knows the original form she doesn’t know how it’s evolved since then.
This is visible in the scene with Shadout Mapes, she is using her skills to feel her way through the conversation and guess the right answers to her questions. It’s all fraud and manipulation.
It's not artificial, the Bene Gesserit really believe in the Kwisatz Haderach. They just spread the prophecy in Arrakis and let the people alter it as long as it fits their purpose (that explains why they call Paul Lisan Al-Gaib or Mahdi, the idea of the Green Paradise, or those minimal differences)
The cololuseum scene wasn't necessarily supposed to be "black and white" per se. If I rember from the books their sun absorbed color, rather than producing it. That's why you see skin tone, and some color when they're indoors and in the shadows. There's no color in the sunlight. I loved the way they filmed this.
They filmed it in Infrared! Which is why it does such a great job of looking not quite right. The infrared wavelength light interacts with skin very differently and gives it that ghostly translucency.
It was actually Filmed with Infrared cameras. And yes, in the books their sun is black and quite literally sucks the color out of anything. That is why the Dresses of the Bene Geyserite went from black to white.

Aw man... the relationship portrayed between Chani and Paul is different in the book, and so is the relationship with his mother.... I loved the movies though!! Such a different ending between them. Last paragraph in the book,
“So you say now,” Chani said. She glanced across the room at the tall princess.
“Do you know so little of my son?” Jessica whispered. “See that princess standing there, so haughty and confident: They say she has pretensions of a literary nature. Let us hope she finds solace in such things; she’ll have little else.” A bitter laugh escaped Jessica. “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives.”

Thank you for this comment. The book is by far superior, which is most case with movie-book adaptions. But still I'm happy with Dune's success because the movies will act as a gateway to the books which are timeless and incredible achievement by Herbert.
Good point. I was very surprised by the changes to the ending, but it makes sense. Dune Messiah is the most important book in the series for explaining what Herbert meant, but it would make an awful movie because there is very little forward motion in the plot. The different ending sets up an opportunity for Denis to tell the story while keeping up the epic style of the first two films.
It surprises me that people gets surprised by Paul saying he will marry the emperor's daughter, the moment it was told to her there was only one way her family could stay in power my most immediate thought was "well, she'll have to marry Paul" like it was just so obvious to me, but my sister went with me to watch the movie and she also got surprised, just as you two here. I think that's exactly why Paul told Chani just before that he loves her, so she knows his feelings haven't changed and that if he does something like that it's not bc he forgot her or bc he wants someone else, but bc he has to.
Anyone with any understanding of royal systems and houses and all that should have seen that coming.

When Paul takes the water of life, it's not 50/50, it's the first time in history a man survived. Keep in mind that the quote in the book was "Many men have tried. All have died."
Also, she didn't "save" Paul, he survived without any assistance. He is the kwisatz haderach, the Dune Messiah. With all their manipulation, the witches have real power. Paul can see and do that which the women like him cannot.
It's a man who's a son of a Bene Gesserit. He has powers but is not a messiah.

It is impressive to see Jessica's change after taking the Water of Life. Throughout the first and up to this point, fear has always accompanied her, so much so that she had moments to still her fears through the Litiny of Fear. Afterward, that fear is gone.

Seeing Stilgar's belief in Paul being the Lisan Al Galib so strong that he would willingly sacrifice himself for it reminded me of what the Oracle spoke to Neo about Morpheus in _The Matrix..._

Definitely going to be the movie of the year, it’s easily one of the most incredibly visual sci-fi movies ever and it’s going to blow streamers minds.

He says this in the first film the first time he interacts with spice then says it again as Gurney approaches him.
I've heard commentary that the first time he says that in the spice fields. It's a dual meaning. He DOES recognize Gurney's steps - he'd mentioned it before back on Calladan.
...BUT...
The Fremen name of the Great Worms is Shai-Hulud. Which also means - "old man of the desert".
So - is he in fact saying, while he is in the influence of his first intense exposure to the Spice Melange and the opening of his senses of prescience,
- "I recognize your footsteps old man" to Gurney?
To the oncoming Great Worm?
Or TO BOTH?
In the second film it's far more direct and less ambiguous - it's Gurney there for sure.

Fun fact: Austin Butler confirmed in an interview that his kiss with Stellan Skarsgård was completely improvised. When I found out about that, I was so shocked! 😳👏
To be honest, it actually looks improvised.
That's pretty a crazy thing to improv that but also it's perfectly on brand with the books cause the Baron and Feyd's relationship is a lot more sinster (basically the Baron has pedophilic desires towards him and it's implied that he was abused in that way as a child by him) so the kiss is a good way of implying that without losing the PG-13 rating they were going for.

Had the pleasure of experiencing this in theatres and it took my breath away. If Dune Part 1 was all about the world building and set up, then this was the payoff with an interesting third chapter (Dune: Messiah) still to come. There were changes made from the book but they were mostly for the best IMO (though I did wish the battle scenes were longer lol). Every frame of this felt so immersive and cinematic and the performances were great across the board. The final duel with Paul going toe-to-toe with Feyd-Rautha was so well done (intense, brutal and hard-hitting). A TRUE SCI-FI EPIC.
Agreed on all points. It’s funny you say you wish the battle scenes were longer because in the book they’re all but skipped. The atomics scene is like two sentences. The entire big battle at the end is set up and then it’s all conversation after that. So grateful Denis filled in the blanks a bit lol

My favorite part of the Geidi Prime coliseum scene is the fact that it's not black and white just for the sake of doing artsy black and white. Denis had the idea that Geidi Prime's black sun would act as a color vacuum. You see colors/pigment in their skin at night or in the interiors.
Also the opening is incredible. Did you guys notice that Paul might be dreaming at the beginning and talking to his sister. I thought her still being in the womb but talking to Jessica made those scenes so much creepier. The three major antagonists in this movie who manipulate things are Gaius Mohaim, Baron Harkonnen and Jessica!

This whole movie is filled with jaw dropping moments but she was right about the sound design. That whole sandworm scene sent chills down my spine. Did you notice the main theme of dune 2 played for the first time halfway in the movie. Pure brilliance.

The black and white is actually inferred cinematography. Denis wanted Giedi Prime to have a black sun that absorbed all color, his cinematographer suggested the sun would radiate infrared light which bleaches out all the colors. Notice the black cloaks of the Bene Gesserit in the colosseum turn white under this light frequency.
The production had to do extensive testing with sets, clothing and makeup to get the visuals to work as the infrared cameras saw light very differently than the human eye (different materials absorb and reflect infrared differently than they do color or even traditional black and white) and the tones kept coming out all wrong before they worked it all out.
Pauls sister IS in fact communicating from her mothers womb she is a POWERFUL psychic.

I won't lie, I'm a little sad Feyd-Rautha already died. I feel like he could've stayed for the third movie.
Well he dies in the book so it was important to adapt that correctly. But if it's any consolation, they made him more badass in the movie and a better fighter, in the book Paul beats him with ease.
His death is a huge thematic moment for Paul and solidifies Paul's transformation into Muad'dib once and for all. The story would make no sense if he'd remained alive.

When the reverend mother tells Paul "Consider what you are about to do" and he claps back "Silence!"...is in itself a call back to the first movie when she tells him to put his hand in the box, and the visions he seen there. (When he starts squirming with his hand in the box she tells him "Silence".)
This in a way puts the reverend mother on the spot, in essence pointing fingers at their manipulation, and that what is going on now is the result of that so they'll HAVE to suffer the consequences.

Paul is the messiah more or less. He has all of the power and prophecy to do this. But the fact it feels so wrong is definitely intentional. It’s showing how dangerous messianic figures can be. The vision he had in the first movie did come true, warriors waving the Atredies banner spreading across the universe in a holy fire. Billions are killed. Paul is no hero
like Jesus had the option to decide, he was tempted. Jesus couldnve lost the battle otherwise there's no merit to his achievement of sacrifice on the cross. Paul Atriedes didnt win against the enemy of Power, maybe if he did it wouldve been a different story, a more spiritual development

They were about to take Him by force not because He had lost control or influence, but because He had gained it...
One of those times where the director just "gets" the author's vision, making changes in the story to focus on certain elements, while still keeping to the themes and intended aesthetic of the original. When I left the theater, I simply felt like, "yeah, that's pretty much Dune as I imagined it", and that's something pretty special.
Apparently Villeneuve started planning this when he was a teenager and in love with the book.
An absolute masterpiece. So many awe-inspiring moments...Paul doing his ride of the grandfather worm, the scene of that armada of worms coming out of the sandstorm and just ripping through everything in sight of the Emperor's army...even little things. When Fayd Rautha took out Sietch Tabre and finds that one woman fighter left who stayed behind as a holding action while the others escaped...that was the same one who in the beginning argued LOUDLY that Paul was an imposter. But she eventually came to accept him and willingly stayed behind to delay the Harkonnens, knowing her life was utterly forfeit...for him.
We haven't seen a movie this good in a long, long time.
The road Paul took was the only one he could take that allowed him to have a semblance of control of the events that were to come and the Crusade that was to come with the Fremen burning the Galaxy down
This is exactly right. This is something Herbert does an excellent job portraying in the books. Paul is constantly trying to deal with situations and nuances that only he can perceive. He is tormented by this. This is something it's truly hard for the film to portray. Paul is trying to select the path(s) with the best possible outcomes. That doesn't mean ANY of those paths are ideal. It will be interesting to see if they work to let the audience into his inner world around his dilemmas more, as the films/shows move forward.
I really like the way the worked with this in the Sci-Fi Channel's production of Children of Dune.
Paul's unborn sister Alia, very much has her own thoughts. The Reverend Mother ritual dumps the memories of ALL PAST reverend mothers into the new one. Alia received those memories as well, she's already self aware, full of thought, before she even leaves the womb.
You said that his marriage to the princess was what his mother wanted, but if you remember in Part 1, as he is explaining to Liet Kynes about how he was going to make a play for the throne. How the Emperor's daughters are not married and he has no heir. The marriage to the Princess was strictly a political move. In the book, he tells her he will never bed with her or give her an heir. The bloodline ends with Paul's staying on the throne. Chani is his concubine who has his children.
The Bene Gesserit plan was to install a Mahdi that could be under their control.
But Jessica’s love for Leto had her bear a son and make her own plans in spite of the Bene Gesserit.
So Paul is actually the messiah the Fremen wanted and is on their side, not the one the supposed to be installed.

Just like in the movie she is constantly afraid but focusing on what's gonna happen to Paul. She didn't know anything about the plan.

I’ve seen this movie 10 times, majority in 70mm IMAX. TRULY cannot get enough. Seeing it again Friday now that it’s back in theaters for a limited engagement! If you’re near a 70mm screen, I highly recommend making the trip!

It was only on 70mm IMAX in 9 theaters in the entire U.S. at the peak of the run. I think the one theater (sort of) near me that had it, doesn't have it anymore. I've seen the film 3 times in theater. I'm going to try to catch it twice before it leaves. 🙂

I just love Paul's character. For so long, he resists his curiosity. Leto said in the first film "a man doesn't seek to lead, he is called to it", and it's crazy that that was foreshadowing the twisted ways his mother was manipulating the Fremen, making more and more people believe that Paul is their destined leader, that he was called to their world by the divine. And if course Paul feels helpless to stop it, but is also not wanting to die on account of Chani. So the only solution (to him) is to drink the Water of Life and fulfill the prophecy.
I also think Paul does want the Fremen to be free, but the way he's doing it is almost a complete destruction of the Fremen culture entirely.
It's just so good. Frank Herbert was insanely forward thinking.

Those demon costumes from the hooksmen are meant to represent bulls. Leto’s father was killed in an arena fighting bulls for sport. The Harkonnen are true villains of the Atreides and are mocking their final destruction using painful iconography of their family. True sadists.

as a veteran fan of the 80s Dune, i really love how the new generation, of directors, writers, actors, audiences... and reactors, awake to this brilliant piece of sci-fi. even though the 80s condensed version had its own merits... Sting was in it, for one... anyway, you are really great giving us a unique, and fresh, perspective, as part of a new generation and writers background, always adding value in your videos. many congrats!
Stilgar is the perfect example of how to bring comedy to a very serious film without disturbing the seriousness of it. Him glazing Paul the entire film is just perfect, and that last "Lisan al-Gaib" made the entire theater laugh.
Also, seeing this film in a dolby cinema was the second greatest film I've seen in any theater, second only to avatar 2. When the worm riding scene came up, the entire room felt like an earth quake, and the seat shakers were shaking so hard i thought they were going to break. It was unbelievably immersive. It even made me want to buy seat shakers for my own seats at home to get that experience at home when i get the 4k bluray in.

I love these movies so much. I sadly couldn't see the first film in theaters, but I so far have seen Dune Part Two three times in theaters: once in digital IMAX, once in 70mm IMAX, and the most recent just at my neighborhood theater. Amazing experience every time! I keep getting chills every time Paul enters his "villain arc" (so to speak), striding towards the assembly in his black cloak, with Hans Zimmer's amazing score. Another favorite sequence is of course the entire Geidi Prime part, from the infrared coliseum scene, to Lady Margot Fenring showing one of many ways the Bene Gesserit operate.
You guys are on it!! Very nice. This movie truly is an amazing achievement. One of the best this century IMO.

Herbert wanted to warn us that there is no such thing as prophecy.
Fate and prophecy are man made things. People are too easily swayed by charismatic people into doing what they know to be wrong, just because "the universe" is telling them.
The truth is; Paul had the choice to listen to his father and not seek vengance, and not bring Jihad to come. But he CHOSE to listen to the prophecies, which he knew were created by the Bene Gesserit, for his own selfish wishes to save Shani and gain control.
This is incorrect.
The bene gesserit planted the seeds of religion but the planet itself ran with it and made it grow. The visions WERE NOT CREATED by the bene gesserit. That is a natural ability heighted by exposure to the spice then fully formed when drinking water of life. Based on this there is no evidence Paul was selfish. That is wrong. His choice is based on curse of knowledge. He is a victim of being put in a unwinnable situation so he chose the best action he could based on his prescience. Herbert's messaging was very muddled and executed very poorly. He ended up giving Paul an out by giving him presience. From what your saying by that logic Dr Strange is evil for letting Tony and half of earth being killed because it the "Only way".
Paul's face at the end was that of reluctant and distressed protagonist who had no choice to save humanity and fremen by starting the war and having a political marriage.
Herbert's true message is be cautious of not just charismatic leaders not because they are good or bad but because of systems and cults that consolidate power to one entity or leader and how that potentially can be devastating for you.

No. Sorry. That doesn't make much sense. Herbert played with the concept of fate, and even funnels Paul down a depiction of an inevitable outcome, calling the Jihad itself essentially unavoidable past a certain point. Paul does not have a choice, other than to die, or kill a certain number of Fremen, along with himself, which would have just kept the Fremen down under Harkonnen rule permanently. Paul is quite literally stuck to a path. The closest thing he has to a real choice is when he abandons the golden path because he just can't take it any more after everything he has had to do.

The whole idea of the Kwisatz Haderach is to create a Bene Gesserit Guild Navigator. Someone who has all the past knowledge and the ability to see all possible future paths to lead Humanity into a “better” future. Paul dreams it but he’s too scared to act on it. Leto II will enforce it.

Dune, I think this film perfectly shows what humans are, especially in their most vile aspects. Thirst for power, lack of empathy, desire to impose one's will, ability to deal the lowest blows to ensure one's survival, belief in fairy tales when they suffer, etc. The Fremen suffer and look for a way out of their miserable situation. So they were manipulated by the power-hungry women who are unscrupulous and ready to do anything to achieve their goals. Others want to retain their powers at all costs and others want to have supreme power. In these power games some are lost like Paul's naive girlfriend. She dreams of a world that does not exist and cannot exist! Paul himself is only the result of this incessant war between the powerful clans of the empire and the burning desire of the Fremen to free themselves from their oppressors. I also see him as a victim and a traumatized being. As I say, it’s the history of the world! Power struggles produce traumatized and embittered people who will not hesitate to do harm when the opportunity presents itself. Can this end? Unless there is supernatural intervention, I don't think so. I think that if humans could be peaceful beings on their own, we would know that. Maybe after this life we will have peace, but even then it still seems like a fairy tale!

I saw this movie during the fan first even t with friends who have read the books. We knew the end, but it still didn’t soften the blow of Chani. Excellent work by all in this film.

So Jessica has been training her entire life as a Bene Gesserit. She has the training and mental and emotional maturity to handle thousands of years of memories and trauma from previous reverend mothers. Alia being in Jessica’s womb will inherit all those powers but without the emotional maturity and experience to process them. Alia will be known as “preborn”, being born with all that power right out of the gate. Preborn’ s are forbidden because they are at risk of “abomination”, being consumed by all the former personalities and going wildly out of control. Women are XX chromosomes so they can only unlock all the female memories. Paul is male so XY and he unlocks ALL of his genetic ancestors male and female. In the case of Alia….I don’t want to spoil anything for later films but having all the power of that knowledge and no training…..yea….
Watching this in Cinema is a treat! When they played Gom Jabbar during Paul’s first worm ride was overwhelming, not to mention the seats are vibrating and the cinema feels like It’s shaking. When Paul said ‘Long live the fighters’ I almost want to stand up and scream *”Addaam reshii a-zaanta!”* or *”Lisan Al gaib!”* 😂 I had to stop myself because I’ve been hyperventilating all throughout the film. 😅
This was spectacular and heartbreaking. Paul made the ultimate sacrifice by becoming someone he didn't want to be - in a way he gave up his soul, and in the process he gave up the love of his life. In Part One, when Jessica explained to him about "The One," Paul said he was part of a plan, and he looked incredibly sad at realizing his own mother had created him as a weapon - now, in the last part of Part Two, when the Bene Gesserit plan reeled him in, he became that weapon in his mother's hands. We saw that she too saw him as an instrument, a weapon, more than she saw him as her child and as a person. She is using him in a way that is as cold and ruthless as Feyd - as a Harkonnen.

Dune lore is complicated!
The worms are new ones, in the books ( i don't think they mention it in the movies) the trip south is a 20 thumper trip, which means they need 20 different worms that are called in to reach the southern sietches
I saw this in an IMAX theater opening weekend, and the experience has stuck with me. This was one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever had! I was utterly entranced by what was on the screen and loved it from start to stop!
Paul taking the emperor's daughter's hand has nothing to do with love, it's a concept called Concubinage, it's a political/strategical marriage. Paul's Mom and Dad weren't truly married either, they were concubines, that's why in the first movie he tells her "I should've married you". He truly loved her but couldn't actually marry her for political reasons.

Concubinage is an interpersonal and sexual relationship between two people in which the couple does not want to, or cannot, enter into a full marriage. Concubinage and marriage are often regarded as similar, but mutually exclusive.
That, and Paul has to take Irulan’s hand as it’s his only legitimate route to the Throne, although the great houses initially still refuse to honour it, but a lil holy war clears all that up

Also, I wouldn’t say Paul drank the Kool-aid. He says “there is a narrow path” after he drinks the water of life. He is walking that narrow path when he takes control and when he says he will marry Irulan. To achieve the goal, this is what he has to do. I think the bigger question is does Paul remember the goal? Is it to free the Freman? To continue to avenge his father’s death? To take over spice production? The narrow path is dark and morally ambiguous to be sure. I also think that Jessica didn’t have a real choice when Stilgar asked her to be the Reverend Mother. Her choice was to do it or she and her children would be dead. If Paul wasn’t Lisan al-Gaib they would have been considered spies and dealt with accordingly - their water would go in the pool.
Stephen Spielberg said that the scene of Paul riding the worm is probably the best thing he's ever seen in a movie.
It was one of the things that made me smile, seeing the lasguns fire a continuous beam just like they say in the books and not a bolt like Star Wars.
i read somewhere recently that Paul knew that the desert mouse was called Muadib because of the numerous lessons he received about about the Fremen and their land( we even see a clip of him studying the desert rats in the beginning of Dune 1). So it’s not a coincidence that he chose that name and it’s entirely strategical that he acted like he didn’t know it meant the one that points the way. He just let them believe it was a coincidence

I had the opportunity to enjoy it twice in IMAX, completely satisfied with the scenery, CGI, the pace that the film takes and the spectacular performance that does not disappoint from each one of the actors.

There is no personal bond between a Fremen and the Worm they ride, they're essentially wild animals.
The Fremen hooks they throw pull up the Sandworm's plates, revealing fleshy areas the worm doesn't want exposed to sands, this keeps them from submerging whenever a Fremen rides.
Interesting to see how this diverges significantly from the books.
I appreciate that you guys actually picked up on the fundamental message of Dune and colonization/genocide. One of the few people that actually understood it and didn't take it as a hero movie.
I really do think the water of life ritual wouldn’t have killed Paul but Jessica used Chani to legitimize his legend. That’s the way I see it, at least. Makes it quite fascinating/twisted.

Had to wait until I had seen the movie before watching your reaction to it. It's like experiencing the movie again with you guys in the room. Making reactions videos comes with with some decision making for sure. What scenes to include etc. And I think you guys have got that process down to perfection. You select the exact key scenes to capture the experience, and of course both of yours knowledge of composers of the music, directors, and everything else adds to the experience. I complimented you on another video before, and I don't even remember exactly what I wrote. Maybe I'm repeating myself. But I just HAVE to say that you guys are the BEST! There are lots of Stilgar memes...but I think the humor is missing how awfully tragic his character is: he is the biggest example of what Paul means when he says, "these people used to be my friends, now they're my followers." Stilgar starts a simple man of faith. But by the end of the film, Bardem's eyes are different in every frame...he portray's a Stilgar that's gone beyond human, and has become a fanatic.
The tragedy of the story itself is nailed by the Emperor (masterful performance, albeit a brief one, from Walken). When he tells Paul he didn't like his father basically because a weak person follows their heart...The Emperor doesn't intend this, but this is ultimately a reference back to part one, when Leto tells Jessica, "I should've married you." BOTH these characters paid the price of following their hearts. Leto was supposed to marry a highborn, and Jessica betrayed the sisterhood by bearing Leto the son he wanted, instead of the daughter they wanted. Because they loved each other.
This is all super important because in that moment the Emperor tells Paul his father was weak for following his heart...Paul still has a choice to be with Chani. But Paul isn't more like Leto, in the end: and doesn't follow his heart.
