      Yup, I think the only way to really do a faithful adaptation of the book is to give it the "Game Of Thrones" treatment; A big budget series on cable or streaming service. The first book alone is so dense that it probably has enough material in it to do two 10-episode seasons.

      I think that's the base level of it, but on a deeper, more personal aspect it's about Paul facing his inner demons.
      Like he said earlier in the movie, his family has been facing the Harkonnen's for centuries; they know everything about their mortal enemy, their hatred for them is boundless, hell even look at Gurney's feelings for them, and with how close he and Paul are I'm sure a lot of that rubbed off on Paul.
      Now Paul learns that these people who are essentially worse than the devil in his eyes are actually his ancestors; imagine the internal conflict that must be going on there. He already doesn't want to continue down this path because he knows it will end in a galaxy wide genocide, now on top of that he learns he is Harkonnen - the people who are eaters of planets, slavers, genocidal maniacs, sadists, the list goes on - and everything he and his family were fighting against for generations will become his identity. He will essentially go against his genetic coding, everything he was taught since birth, and become the most loathed and detested machination of his psyche. I can't even begin to imagine what that must feel like.
      I'm sure this goes even deeper if you were to fully study it, but that's what I have for now. Paul essentially sacrifices every moral belief of his character, and for what? His life - his true life - is forfeit.

    The nukes didn't miss. Paul aimed for the mountain to blow a hole through it so the worms (and the storm) could get through. The storm winds will render shields ineffective (I think this is what the movie is trying to depict with the flames coming off the emperor's ship), which is necessary when worms are around so they don't go into a frenzy and kill each other. This is why it was critical to time the battle with the storm. Paul also couldn't aim the nukes directly at the army because atomic attacks on humans is outlawed in this universe, and comes with severe penalties. The great houses would have responded by basically whipping the Fremen out with their own arsenals. In the book the emperor actually tries to charge Paul with illegal use of atomics, but Paul responds, almost humorously, that he merely targeted a "natural feature of the desert" because it was in his way and he was "in a hurry to get to you."

  • @Kuoropoika1
    @Kuoropoika1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

    14:56 They never explained this in the movie, but if you hit a shield with a laser gun, it will cause an atomic explosion that will destroy anyone and anything even near the event. That's why they used the laser only after the thopter was destroyed.
    You also can't use shields when travelling in the desert, because it attracts the worms like crazy. That's why Harkonnens use laser guns on Fremen, because they know that they don't use shields. At around 3:53 one of the soldiers yells "No shields" because the shields would cause the worms to attack.

    • @unanimousarts
      @unanimousarts 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For those that haven’t read the book, in the first movie, Dr. Kines explains why shields aren’t utilized in worm territory. Some insight is given during Paul and Gurney’s sparring session. But you’re right, there was no direct explanation regarding lasguns or bullets. They do show what happens but a first time viewer might not immediately catch on without a formal explanation.

Meanwhile the ones who the great leaders, Leto I and Paul, loved in reality were the unofficial wives.

Also Lady Jessica and the baby, Alia said that Paul was blinded by love. Even the Emperor said that Leto, Paul's father, followed his heart and that made him a weak man.
    All of this is to point out that even though Paul promised to marry Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), he would still love, and be with our girl Chani. No worries! Lol

    One change they made that results in confusion, but was for narrative efficiency:
    The houses didn't honor his ascendancy... in the book they do, but the holy war essentially traverses the galaxy because the fremen essentially create this exclusivistux religion based on Paul being their messiah, and its like a crusade to enforce that belief.
    But if the houses, in unison, didn't honor his ascendancy, then his honor based coup/duel/marriage wouldn't be helpful, since that was done to smooth the transition of power, essentially following the rules of the transition of power instead of a full revolution.

    5:55 "Are we supposed to have subtitles?!" - Yes. Though there are none for this scene (because Chani translates it for him) you should have been able to see the translation of what the Harkonnen troops were saying at the beginning
    17:48 "Dude can't get enough of those oil baths" - It's not oil, it's processed Spice. They stated in Part 1 that, aside from being a mind altering hallucinogen, it has enermous health benefits and can even extend life. The fact he is using them so frequently is a direct result of Leto's attempt to kill him. He survived but his lungs were most likely so damaged by the poison that he needed constant spice baths to keep him going. It's also why he had those floating things attached to him. It's basically like someone walking round withan oxygen supply attached to them
    20:14 "Is the baby the messiah?!" - No, she means metaphorically. The baby however will be born fully conscious as a result of the Water of Life - which is how she is speaking to Jessica in the womb. Imagine not even being born but having the awareness of not only an adult but someone who can see the future. It's really crazy how the prophecy was written as a way to control the Fremen
    But the prophecy is also coming true (the whole Desert Spring's tears when Chani's secret name means Desert Spring etc for instance)
    It's such good writing because it really makes you feel like there's something else guiding this entire thing

    • @Mascifin
      @Mascifin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The writers of the prophecy -- the Bene Gesserrit(probably spelled wrong) -- have foresight and guided the creation of these cultures for millennia. Paul, who gains perfect foresight, mentions that there are many futures and he chooses his way through them; that alone means the concept of the prophecy is bullshit, because that would require one true future.
      It truly is simply a way to manipulate populations.

    • @crabuki1273
      @crabuki1273 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Akshully... the book is DENSE, but also very good, so I certainly recommend it. This is the best adaptation ever, but they had to leave out vast amounts of world building. One of which being: The Bene Gesserit seed TONS of worlds with the same prophecy as part of their "Missionaria Protectiva," as a way to protect any future Bene Gesserit sisters who end up on one of those worlds. They all know the story which was planted and can therefore lean into it, filling one of the roles in the prophecy, which provides them protection and resources via the local population, who see prophecy coming true before their eyes. However you ARE right. The strategy of seeding religion, the story told, is created based on spice visions of the Bene Gesserit, and so they were indeed describing what they foresaw. Thus on most worlds it was merely a survival strategy, but on Arrakis it was a history of the future.

    • @TheDoctorIWho
      @TheDoctorIWho 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are, like many, mixing up "the prophecy" the Bene Gesserit implemented with the Kwisatz Haderach-prophecy of the bene Gesserit. On Arrakis, like on any other planet the Bene Gesserit implemented religions to give members of the order in need a way to live or rule the society they are stranded in. The Kwisatz Haderach on the other hand is the result of a Bene Gesserit breeding program. In Dune it happens to be coincedentially that the Bene Gesserit in need is at the same time the mother of the Kwisatz Haderach. "The prophecy of the Fremen" was made to rule over them but it was not ment to free them. That only happens because both prophecies came to fruition at the same time at the same place.

    • @tiagofialho7015
      @tiagofialho7015 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The prohecy is a story created of the visions of the bennegesserits. It is they're "narrow way" to secure the humankind future they saw. So...Yes, they manipulated a society to achiev said visions and in essence, the prophecy is both, fake and true .

    14:47 that is a perfectly valid question because the movie fails to explain a vital piece of information. If a laser hits
    A shield there is a good chance that a catastrophic explosion of both the shield generator and the laser will occur.
    With the Thopter flying around they couldn't risk using lasers and the thopter could then spot where the laser beams are coming from and Target it.
    Generally to use a laser against a shielded vehicle is suicidal.
    30:17 like in the Cold War if one side uses nukes the other side it's free to do so. So blowing up the other side cities will result in mutual assured destruction. There is a treaty among all the houses stating this. But that only applies against their troops or their cities. Paul will find a loophole.

In the books it's revealed that Gurney and Duncan would go all out training with each other to keep their skills sharp and out of every 10 times they fought Gurney would win 6 out of 10. That's why he was the War Master who was trusted with knowing where the Atomics were and not Duncan. Gurney was the superior warrior and battle strategist.

    The mechanics of worm-riding make a lot of sense, in pratical terms.
    The hooks are use as reins like with a horse BUT have a far more important role.
    When the hooks attach on the armoured segments of the worm carapace, they expose the sensitive flesh beneath it. The coarse sand is abrasive to the worm flesh, so it prevents the worm from rolling over, submerging and kllling the rider.
    Awesome world building, right?

    Flags are very important on battle fields also called standards they are rally points if you get separated from your unit that’s where you work your way towards. Also dune marriages are political arrangements not actual marriages. Paul needed to marry the emperors daughter to become de facto heir and inherit his choom company shares. All the great houses buy shares in the choom company that controls spice production. He also needed the emperors power in the landsradt kind of galactic parliament where the emperors power is balanced by the power of the combined great houses that’s why in movie one he needed to be careful about wiping out the atredes family. If the emperor moves against one of them the others will band together because they could be next and fight the emperor.
