I knew nothing about Dune before watching part 1 a couple of months ago. But all I got to say is this movie is badass. Timothée is quickly becoming one of favorite actors. Can't wait for part 3.

@@Gunnar001 I can see how it may be taken that way, but I see Feyd just being amused by it while still respectful. The saying basically suggests "you're totally going to lose this fight, but at least we'll both have given our all" which Feyd would totally be into
@@Gunnar001 I took it more as a kind of weak attempt to be cool by copying Paul. With a little bit of an almost childish "I know you are but what am I?" taunt. But overall, I think Feyd wants to gain respect by beating respectable foes.
And he plays a game of deception to kill Feyd-Rautha.
One of the sickest parts of the movie is when Paul says "We're Harkonnens...so that's how we'll survive...by being Harkonnen" with the look on his face and the way the lines are delivered...so sick...and then to top it off, the sick cut to hard hitting music and then seeing him walking towards the camera with a huge worm following him while exploding through the ground. I noticed so many reaction channels don't really take in the meaningfulness and the darn awesomeness of that entire segment - how deep and hard it hits - because they're still busy going on about Jessica being Baron Harkonnen's daughter, lol.
the soundtrack, cinematography, acting, edition, visual effects, dialogue, is so good on that sequence is a whole experience the first time
I watched this movie 3 times in theaters, and I noticed how in the beginning they took the water from the bodies of the harkonnens and then dumped the bodies for the worm to eat. But when they went and fought in that last battle scene, they burned the bodies which is against their culture, since they treat water as something very sacred.
That is because their messiah arrived, and they were willing to abandon old customs that would no longer be needed when Arrakis is a lush green paradise.
kissing the ring is such an immense moment. That is the ultimate moment when fate is sealed.
I love how Paul doesn't say anything, he just stomps his foot like he's dealing with a disobedient dog.

The more I rewatch it, the more I realize - he knew exactly what he was doing. He convinces Fremen he is their Messiah so they won't give a shit he is part Harkonnen, and so their highly skilled warriors help him win the fights ahead. Then he cuts all Harkonnen ties to the throne. He kills the Baron, Gurny kills Glossu Rabban, and Paul kills Feyd Rautha. He now has authority over it because of his birthright. Being Leto's son, he is also continuing the bloodline of Atreides - his children will be Atreides. And he is Duke of Arrakis because his father was. He marries the Emperor's daughter and gets to shape the world differently, fixing history, bringing prosperity to Arrakis, bringing the centuries-long war against Harkonnens to an end.
Holy War is a small price to pay for that.
He also now can command Sardaukar and Fremen warriors, the best in the world. Complete advantage.
Cudos to Jessica for defying everything she knew. She fell in love with Leto and decided to give him a son. If it was a girl, she'd be sent to Benne Gesserit from birth, never knowing her father or any other family, just like Jessica was, and she'd eventually be a concubine to psychotic Feyd Rautha. Instead, her son remains at his father's side as his heir, shows signs of immense intelligence and higher power, is capable of Benne Gesserit abilities. Good for you, Jessica.
I wouldn't say that 61 billion deaths is a small price to pay.....

A small price?? The casualties were 61 billion lives, the sterilization of ninety planets, and the "demoralization" of five hundred additional worlds. Furthermore, 40 different religions were wiped out, along with their followers.
Jessica to me is one of the very badass feminine characters of literature and cinema. Up there with other capable characters like Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, and Furiosa

This Chani is way more naive than Book Chani. She pushes Paul to marry Irulan for political legitimacy, and even Jessica tries to convince Paul to marry Chani for love because she and her Duke didn't and she regrets it. Very different from the film.
Point is Chani is Paul's true love and Irulan doesn't get an iota of affection from him.
@@Akaeus I disagree…. I think it’s pretty clear that Chani knows why Paul is marrying Irulan lol… they don’t have to spell everything out through dialogue, and she will reunite with Paul in the next film.. that’s basically confirmed so they’re not changing that.
This Chani is actually a character that expresses her own aspirations and goals. She knows why Paul is marrying Irulan, she’s upset that he’s caused a war and is using her people to do so giving them false hope in a false prophet.
In the books, there's a fair bit more mind games going on. For example, as long as Paul gets his duel with Feyd, it's a win for him in his book.
If he dies, he's a martyr. A tyrant dies and his rule is over; a martyr dies and his rule begins. The Fremen will carry out the Holy War in his name regardless.

@@brosnshowsEven if you don't read 'Dune' it's worth buying just to have the maps (showing locations like Arrakeen, Sietch Tabr, the Shield Wall, etc) and the glossary of terms which explains so much of the Duniverse's history and concepts.

I think there's also huge metaphorical significance that the Fremen burnt the Harkonen and Sardukar bodies.... like "Bish, you destroyed our holy water, we don't need it no more because we goin off planet." It's a sad philosophical change in their view of vengeance over sacred.

Bene Gesserit are in all the great houses because they're really useful and bring a lot of skills and value. Trained fighters, highly educated, intelligent, truthsayers, politicians, mentats. Good reactions guys, enjoyed it a lot.
They weasel themselves into anywhere close to power because they are hot and spectacular in bed. Everything else is a side benefit.

All the Great Houses have access to (tactical) nukes. Used for excavation, etc. One Chinese operative wanted to use them to help dig a transoceanic canal through Nicaragua (for some reason, some Nicaraguans objected to this idea). Anyone who uses nukes against people immediately would incur the wrath of all the other Great Houses. So Paul uses them to blow a hole in the shield wall, thus allowing the worms access to Arrakeen and its surroundings. Also, he wants to subvert the Emperor, his family, and his line. Not kill everybody.
I don't think Nicaragua or even Earth exists anymore in the Dune universe, lol. I'm pretty sure our current nationalities, well at least their names (Italian, Chinese, English, Russian, American, etc.) don't exist either, lolol.

The Harkonnens could claim that the Emperor commanded them to exterminate the Atreides, because the Emperor saw them as a threat. This would be a pretty easy deception to pull off, as all the Great Houses knew Leto Atreides was a rising star. If played right, the Harkonnens could have made it out as the overall victors.
Except Paul saw a path. A very narrow path…

So the Bene Geserit are basically just a collective Joseph Campbell with the story archetypes and each individual culture adapts it in their own way in terms of specific details, while keeping the general themes the same. When Irulan deciphered the pattern through a couple of broader paths but brings up the specific of the kangaroo mouse for the Fremen culture, that shows that Sisterhood are not only seeding actual persons with genetic and bloodline manipulation but also cultural anthropological manipulation of stories and legends, does one get a sense of how far-reaching, and effective, their efforts can be.
At the War Council, Paul drops the cultural "pointing the way" trope since he knows they will all recognize it. And then doubles down with the claim that no one but he can take the mantle, he knows that will piss everyone off to the point that most Fremen gathered pull their blades, ready for action. And then he goes after specific I guess leaders of factions, first with the guy who had a grandmother with a lost eye. Notice that the dude drops his eyes as soon as he references her. Upon acceptance of Paul's retelling, he and his whole retinue drop down in acceptance. And then the OG who gives his water to the dead, same thing. And then Stilgar, who had told Jessica that the Lisan-al-Gaib will bring a green paradise, and he uses the same phrase, to make him and his crew fold to his will. Too bad that it's all manipulation leading to a brutal dictatorship, but he got that power, and that's the nature of Frank Herbert's first novel, part two.
This is a great adaptation. I hope Denis will switch things up for Dune Messiah in a way that is more satisfying than the actual novel's plot line to largely satisfy readers and casual first-time viewers of these films.
9:33 it is not all from people. In the books, it’s explained that the Fremen also have Wind Traps that capture every drop of moisture from the air as well. The majority of all the water caches is from this moisture in the air.
That makes a lot more sense, really need to read the books to get the lore
There are so many details in the first book that Denis couldn t put in one movie. To better understand the world, here are few of them. Thousands of years before, there was a great war between people and computers. The intelligent machines became so powerful that they started a war against humans, the Butlerian Jihad. People won, and since then all AI machines were destroyed and creating or using them was forbidden. In order to replace them people created schools for humans that would replace computers. There were the mentats, practically human computers, experts in mathematics and logic (Thufir Hawat and Piter de Vries in part one). There were also the Space Guild navigators who under the effect of spice could fold space and time to find routes for interstellar travel ( because of thousands of years of using spice they no longer look human, can t wait to see them in Dune Mesiah). And, also, there were the Bene Gesserit schools. The Bene Gesserit were only women, were trained in 'the weirding way', they were fierce fighters, could use the voice to control people, they could also control their bodies to the cell (poison transmutation, deciding the sex of the babies, etc). They also had the breeding program, and marrying to great houses leaders gave them political control.
Also, Jessica had a boy because she loved very much Leto who wished to have a son. Leto didn t marry her because he wanted to had control over some of the great houses who hoped to make an alliance with the Atreides by marrying their daughters to Leto.
I dig how Paul tricked the emperor into bringing all his ships for the Fremen to use against the great houses

@@pat7917Doesn’t matter. Paul controls the spice, which means he now has control over the Spacing Guild (the only group in the galaxy capable of interstellar travel.) The Guild won’t risk Paul cutting off the spice from them. They literally need it to survive, as spice addiction withdrawals are fatal.
Paul and his armies can get as many ships delivered to them as they want and be transported to anywhere in the Imperium now.
The spice MUST flow.
At least, that’s how it worked in the books…

Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (the one who tested Paul with the Gom Jabbar) is Jessica's biological mother/teacher. Jessica's parentage was kept secret from her as well from the Baron. Only the higher up Reverend Mothers knew of this, no one else.

Concerning the biology of the worm, you asked, "Who the F*ck figured this out?" This movie is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's groundbreaking novel (he wrote six in total, and was working on the seventh before his death). And everyone asks how does one get off the worm? Frank thought of that too. They ride the worms to the point of exhaustion, and all the worm wants to do is sink deep in the sand and rest and sulk, so one doesn't worry about the worm attacking them. If their trip is long, they just call another worm. Frank Herbert's novels are extremely well thought out, and many facts Denis Villeneuve couldn't include (otherwise it would have been two, five-hour movies). Just a few are, why is there oxygen when there is so little plant life?, where does the spice come from?, what keeps the ground water from seeping up? I could go on and on, but if you want the answers, read the novel.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the reaction from all three of you. Usually, when there are several reactors, the movie gets lost with each person trying to out quip the others, thus missing so much of the explanations that were given along the way.
As much as I love these two movies, I was left feeling just kinda sad that so much really great stuff had to be left out. I'd have gladly watched at least two five-hour movies.

In the movie it's not even clear that Arrakis has underground water reserves. I don't think people that didn't read the books have even figured it out.
I would almost say that in the books Arrakis is the protagonist. Just in the first book Herbert lays a lot of clues about the true plan the Fremen have developed in order to start a positive feedback transformation of Arrakis ecosystem, to turn it into a lush paradise. In the movie there are a few subtle clues but it's hard not to overlook them for people that didn't read the books. For instance, the purpose of the "sacred" water supply the Fremen were gathering in each Sietch is not explained, nor is it explained what Paul meant by telling Stilgar that what he sees in the Fremens' future is a "Green Paradise".

You'd be very much correct. While the political and economic and cultural aspects of Dune have been emphasized a lot, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that the primary theme of Dune is one of ecology, as evidenced by how Herbert himself has stated that the primary inspiration for it, the very seed that planted itself in his mind, was when watching the encroaching sand dunes of Oregon and the battle between nature and humans there (the latter of which were trying to plant certain plants there to stem the advance of the dunes).
There being significantly less emphasis on this, and a variety of other changes, makes it clear to me that we still are very much in need for a more faithful adaptation, even though this one isn't all that bad and at least gets a lot of the other themes across quite well.

@@angelagraves865 Don’t be sad, the lore you like isn’t going anywhere. In my opinion, we need more time until those extra details can be adapted properly. A bad story interpretation can do a lot of damage… as much as I hate it, I would prefer to wait longer if it means we get a well-told story.

Great reaction guys! It will be interesting to what Denis does with ”Part 3”. In my ideal world as a dunehead, he could combine the 2nd and 3rd book (Dune Messiah and Children of Dune). They did that in a SyFy miniseries, about 4.5 hours total. You should check it ou (and ignore the camp factor and some cheesy TV effects). So, have a Return of the King -length final movie and, if done right, that would tie with the best cinematic trilogy in history (sorry SW fans - and I am one of those, too). Without spoiling much, it would give Anya/Alia (FANTASTIC casting, btw) a lot to do - she is one of the most fascinating characters in the book. Also, a tragic hero, along with Paul - and Leto II, his son, in the 4th book. God Emperor of Dune (talk about unfilmable...). Paul`s arc actually ends in Children of Dune (3rd book). Anyway, ”see you” at the IMAX a few years from now. And I`ll die happy. Two of my favorite books, each made into a great trilogy? What more could one ask for? :D. Notice how Paul is a part of more than one prophecy. One that the Benne Jessurite constructed for the Fremen and one that they themselves actually believe in. And then there’s all his skills and abilities in real time on top of all this prophetic stuff. How epic and culturally relevant can one story be ? ✌️
Dune 3 cannot come soon enough. However, this near perfect series cannot be rushed.
Swinging the laser would only hurt the fremen as well since they operate as seperate attackers, you have to assume your allies are taking harkonnens out and could be hit with the laser. Besides, in the book they have to save those laser for machinery and space ships.

I have watched SO many reactions where by the end of movie 2 they still don't understand how Paul's visions work as possible futures, whether or not the prophecy was true or planted, why Jessica could talk to Alia or how shields work. It was SO refreshing that you understood the nature of his visions before you even began. An intelligent viewing! 😊

The logic behind how the Harkonnens could pull off the emperor by denouncing him is explained by how the Imperium is structured. You see, in one side you have the Landsraad, comprised by the union of all the Great Houses, then you have the Emperor and the Space Guild, these are the three pillars that sustain the totality of the Imperium (the Bene Gesserit operates in the backstages, they don't hold any political power per si, but in reality it's them pulling the strings of everything in the shadows). So, how does it works basically? The Great Houses rule the planets (Atreides of Caladan, Harkonnens of Giedi Prime, Corino of Salusa Secundus/Kaitan and so on), the Emperor acts as their lord, keeping the Great Houses in check and guaranteeing there's a balance of power where no one of the Great Houses gets the upper hand over the others and puts the whole balance at risk trying to overthrow the empire. And the Space Guild is the glue that keeps it all together having the absolute monopoly of the space travel science, so, the whole Imperium depends on them to keep in touch with each other, things running smoothly and the economy flowing. But if in theory this is how things work, in action things are a lot less harmonious than it seems - power struggles and coups and murder attempts are so common through the Imperium to the point it became a cultural thing and every Great House learns since childhood to defend themselves, keep Bene Gesserit as Truthsayers to detect spies and what not, have poison detectors installed in their dinning rooms and even have specific words for poison in food or poison in drink, or developed technologies such as the hunter seeker we saw in the first movie. All that is allowed by the Great Convention (the rule book of the Imperium) within certain limits, for example, there is something called War of Assassins, in which two Great House's publicly declare war against each other and try to undermine the other through such methods as said above - sending assassins, working with poison and so on, and that will be ok to the Imperium, everyone will pretend they are not seeing it, basically, because it doesn't threaten the Imperium. The only rule against war in the Imperium is: atomics are forbidden and the Emperor cannot choose sides, he must work sole for the balance of power throughout the Imperium. So, if it comes to public eyes that the Emperor himself lend his personal army to the Harkonnens to end the Atreides, that would cause outrage through the Landsraad, because it would send a message to all the Great Houses: you are not safe, you can be next and the Emperor can take action against you. Basically that would mean all the Landsraad uniting forces against the Emperor who would end up deposed or even dead. The Great Houses don't give a damn about Harkonnens destroying Atreides or vice versa, because most of them would do the same - or is in fact doing it and it wouldn't change a thing for the empire, but include the emperor in that scenario and you have a different outcome. Especially considering that the whole Imperium know the fame of the Corrino's Saudaukar (basically the motive that keep House Corrino in power and the Imperium in check is their vicious army of Sardaukar, unrivaled through the galaxy - aside the Fremen, as we could see. And aside from House Atreides. The reason that made the emperor take action against House Atreides was precisely the fact that their military power was growing to the point of challenging the Corrino's supremacy at the same time that other Houses looked up to them, so they combined both power and influence.)
So, in conclusion, the Harkonnens could easily get a free pass from the Landsraad for destroying House Atreides, but it could never come to light that the emperor himself was involved into it - and that was the leverage the Harkonnens got over the emperor, which could have played in their favor if they didn't left so many loose points. By doing so they became a problem for the emperor himself and they need to be silenced with the Atreides. So it was basically a Mexican Standoff, Harkonnens - Emperor - Atreides

Chani being the skeptic in the movie works until one point - she gives him permission to go south when she knows full well that his visions lead to a great war beyond Arrakis as he gains control of the planet and then after he does this she gets angry like she didnt just give her blessing to do what he must to save her people. It makes her more 1 dimensional than book Chani. 33:33
One of the best movies ever. Paul's speech is probably the bet done scene I have ever witnessed, i literally lives rent free in my mind and gives me chills no matter how many times I see it.

It was very interesting to see how they integrated Islam and Middle Eastern culture into this movie I had no idea at first never heard of the books the clothing was the first thing that gave it away not to mention the visuals were truly impeccable the cinema experience was mind blowing

@@hannahali5317 In the book the term Jihad is actually used. It was replaced by the phrase holy war in the movie due to modern-day sensitivities.
The Harkonnen wouldn’t get in trouble if the plot against the Atreides with the Emperor came to light because Houses are allowed to war against other Houses, and Harkonnen have been against Atreides for centuries. They have an ongoing conflict that is technically legal. Are they looked down on with suspicion for attacking the Atreides in the night, totally. But only the Emperor technically committed a crime. Feyd himself would also be regarded more highly if he had restored the flow of spice and maybe defeated Muad’Dib, saving the Great Houses. He would definitely be a legitimate contender for Emperor.
Great reaction guys! I appreciate how much you focus on the lore and background of the realm and characters. It's been years... well, decades actually, since I read the books, but here's something I haven't seen anyone mention: in the novel Paul doesn't know it was Dr Yueh who betrayed the family. I can't remember when he figures it out but when Gurney Halleck shows up again there is a period where Paul suspects him of being the traitor. There's a LOT more that Villeneuve left out but that's my little offering. (UPDATE: I'm was wrong abut this. I'm not gonna delete the comment but I have been corrected about something in the thread.)
I think you have a few details mixed up. Yueh leaves clues in the ornithopter that they leave in so Paul realises it was Yueh within a day of the assassination. Then when Gurney arrives, Gurney still believes that Jessica was the traitor and he attempts to kill her but Paul and Jessica manage to talk him down. 😊

The burning of the bodies by the freman is also a way of showing their corruption. At the beginning of the movie they were taking the water out of the bodies even if it was contaminated they were taking the water out for use. by the end of the movie they were burning the bodies that is just showing the corruption of their culture whether they want it or not whether it's intentional or not
So to answer the question about the worms and Dune being a green paradise. Yes Dune used to be lush, until the empire discovered the uses of Spice. They decided to colonize the planet and rob it of its natural resources and over time they destroyed the beautiful green planet and turned it into a dry, arid, planet. Basically colonization 101, think Middle East, America, the Congo, etc… The stealing of resources and the destruction of a local ecosystem is a major theme of the books.

There are some really well made and informative videos on YT about the Dune universe. Quinn's Ideas is my favorite. Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians also put out great Dune content. Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station on YT is a fantastic source of Dune information. The guy has a literal PhD in Dune! His videos can be a little dry, though. 😬😆 But there are videos on how the Fremen got to Dune, why there's a ban on certain technology, the origins of the BG Sisterhood, the life cycle of the sandworms, the Spacing Guild and their Navigators (which was a *HUGE* part of the book that was left out), Mentats, the Kwisatz Haderach, and insight into the various characters, including Alia, who was four years old in the book and a fully awakened Revernd Mother from birth. And so much more...

They are more like a religious order that places advisors/ambassadors with the great houses and the emperor......Also the reason they need spice for space travel is that 10,000 years earlier humanity was almost destroyed by Ai and thinking machines. All the great houses send their daughters to be trained to varying degrees by the BG. BG work behind the scenes, and the daughers of the great houses who've been trained by the BG are loyal to the Sisterhood before all others, or at least they're supposed to be. On occasion a Sister will put something/someone else before the Sisterhood or disobey and order and pay for it, usually by exile to an unpleasant planet, sometimes death.
In the thousands of years after her death, Jessica's legacy remained far-reaching. The Bene Gesserit Sisterhood attributed her universe-changing decisions to having fallen in love with "her Duke." Her falling in love became known, for millennia afterwards, as "the Jessica Crime." Love isn't something the BG encourage among themselves.

I'm always conflicted with the idea of the Bene Gesserit laying propaganda or actual prophecy. If a god or deity does it, the people that spread the word are prophets. But to me, what makes a prophecy real or not is not who made it, but if it comes true.... and there are SO many webs to spin and contingencies to manage that it's still impressive. The Bene Gesserit didn't teach Paul how to put on a stillsuit. The Bene Gesserit didn't time the old reverend mother's death with Jessica's arrival, the Bene Gesserit didn't select the "grandfather worm, the biggest ever seen" to come to Paul's thumper. So whether it was a god, an all-powerful being, or a bunch of weirdo nuns with the Jedi mind trick... it's still impressive.

Audio needs to be addressed in your videos. Crazy amount of weird background static kicking in during random moments. Really unbalanced and quiet at times and just distorted others. Some parts are okay some are not.
Sucks cause you guys are really relatable and easy going to watch, and I can tell you guys really are into films and cinema which leads to fun convos.
I know trust me this issue was killing me. I will probably end up re-editing it and trying to fix it. Our reactions usually aren’t like that for audio. But I appreciate the comment anyways and hope to see you in some of our other stuff!

I think Lady Jessica had a choice the whole time. She knew the prophecy of the mother and the son, she gave birth to a boy. Its Paul you should feel bad for, 90 generations or cross breading and you responsible for billions of deaths. He also had to drink the water of life as he really had no choice. She just wanted to drop him off an go back to Caladan.

That's because movie goers are just enjoying his arc flourishing. But this also happened to book readers. After the first book, readers cheered for him as well. Frank seeing that then made Dune Messiah, to hit the point that he isn't the hero. He wanted to make it clear to us 😅

my thing is, the war was going to happen regardless of whether paul became the messiah or not. This whole argument of "paul is good or bad" is just a bad argument imo (but I do understand where people are coming from) because it's like...this is a person who has been given powers he didn't ask for. He didn't want to do any of this, but unfortunately, him being their "messiah" is his purpose. The Holy War was inevitable, and the path he took was one of the best paths where everyone, including himself, could benefit from. A lot MORE people would've died if he had taken a different path. I see all of this as damage control. At the end of the day, Paul is a human with a lot of power, and when you're put in positions of power, you're going to make decisions that everyone might not agree with. Not to spoil much of what happens in the books, but Paul reflects on what happened and is aware of his decisions and questions himself for it. I don't think anyone who is a BAD person is going to reflect on their decisions or care about the outcome. It's not as black and white as people try to make it seem, just like how humans for the most part aren't black and white. There's a lot of gray areas humans fall under. Even Frank Herbert himself said "that people should beware heroes, because of the cult of personality, as it leads them astray. Paul isn't a villain or "anti-hero", he's straight up hero. I found the lack of the battle at the end to be really really disappointing, all that build up for like 5 minutes of battle in a nearly 3 hour movie is really lame, really ruined the film in my opinion. 5/10 overall for that massive ball drop.
