- In this video, I remove the carburetor from a Honda rebel 250, disassemble it for soaking.
This is what you need to do if your motorcycle is not idling without the choke, or is not starting at all after sitting too long.
If you let your motorcycle sit all winter with old gas in the carburetor, this is likely what will need to be done.

Good advice to take pictures, or video. Also, I suggest that as you take it apart, start laying the pieces down from left to right, or right to left, across the top of your work area. Then, instead of digging through a messed up pile of parts in the middle, you simply put it back together, in the order it came apart.

That would be a pretty strange Legend considering it was put back together that day.
Thanks to this video I was able to get the carburetor off to take it to a shop to rebuild. I had to get it done on a 07. Doing it that way I got by with only 1 hour of labor charge.

I have an 06 Rebel that the carburetor was never cleaned, this video seems it should help immensely, even though it is less than perfect.

Having problems with my main jet, I think you're the only Honda 250 carburetor teardown on youtube. (I've got a Nighthawk)
Just make sure it is clean. If the passages are clear, it has to work.

That was actually the slow jet and not the pilot screw that you thought you had to remember how many turns was needed. In which case, there's no need to remember how many turns of the slow jet.
My book (and just looking at it) pilot jet as having no threads or ridges to put a screw driver or wrench on (the 3rd jet in line after the other two he took out in this video). How does pilot come out? I'm not having idle problems so I didn't focus on it this time, but still curious since I haven't fired the bike up yet.

Hi! I made the same mistake as you when taking it apart and didn’t count the number of times I turned the screw… did you figure it out? If so please help, I cant find a video that has the same carb (my bikes a Honda FTR, but the carb looks the exact same)
Actually supposed to be screwed all the way in.
Only screw that needs adjustment is pilot screw (one with spring visible from outside of carb) screw that all way in then 2+1/2 out

I messed up so bad i never cleaned it. After a while it messed up with my clutch because i used the choke a lot

I don't know of any Honda Rebel 250 that has two carbs.

A double carb mod is available but gives nearly no real gains. Buy a single OEM carb. They were never made with dual carbs. They greatly complicate things.
Would it have been easier to unbolt it from the head?

You know you can take the limiter knob off the pilot screw right? And you have to for them to run right, 2 1/2 out

No matter how many times I take it apart and put it back together, my float bowl keeps flooding. I'm thinking that little needle has a rubber tip or something and needs replacing?
the needle is sticking. If you buy a rebuilt kit, you get a new needle. That is what I did. You can try polishing it.
Yeah, I tried that, cleaning the edges of the float valve. I just gave up and bought a another needle about 30 minutes ago on ebay. i think it has a rubber tip cone end instead of a metal end, at least that's what it looks like in the picture? Maybe the rubber has gotten hard or corroded away. The tip looks black like rubber:

That was for a Honda Rebel. I gave up on a GX200 small engine carb float valve that was doing also exactly the same thing, and just bought a whole new carb for $8 rather than just the needle (which cant be bought separately). I would assume the tip would be just a metal cone on these, but apparently not... they are rubber?

hey, how do I tell if my rebel 250 is a California model, whatever that means. I am trying to figure out where the gas tank vent hose goes to. Honda dealer says it goes to a evaporative canister, but I dont think mine has that canister.

I have acquired an abandoned 250 rebel. the fuel lines are all cut. have know idea how to hook them back up. the bike is a 204 but only 3k miles in like new shape. can you help?
There is only one fuel line and its about 6 inches long. Runs from thr petcock to the carb.
MrMalibug I need to know how to reconnect all hoses, not just fuel line. So atmospheric, breather, etc. any ideas where I can find a clear diagram / explanation?

Great video Mark. What all parts did you need to buy? I assume you needed a new float bowl gasket at a minimum.
I just removed my 96 rebel 250 carb yesterday thanks to your video.
HI, I don't remember if I used the same gasket. I bought a kit so maybe it came with one. I just took apart carbs on a shadow and I reused the gaskets no problem.
Don’t suppose u remember the kit u got do you?
I think now it had the gaskets and the float needle only. But they have kits that have everything. I got it from the Honda dealer.
Great thanks. I just tonight tore down the carb and I’m hoping to get away with just that super thin rubber gasket and the float valve.
Also hoping the lacquer thinner does the trick and I don’t have to buck up for the carb cleaner solution.

Can you cover the things that need to be reset to ensure operation? You never said how many turns for pilot jet, and do you know the setting for the mixture screw or the idle adjustment? I have an '06, but there's almost certainly no difference.
Actually I was wrong in the video. You just turn the jets all the way in. The idle screw you adjust as needed for the idle you want.

There is no mixture screw. You need to change the jets to change the mixture. It's a very simple carb. The screw on the side of the float bowl is to drain the gas out.
There is most certainly a "mixture" screw...Your hand grazed by it about a dozen or more times in the video. It is a fuel metering screw with a tab affixed to it.

It's on the bottom of the carb body, between where the bowl and cylinder would be.
well I found something out. In my case, the tab prevents it from being adjusted in a way that seems to make any difference. I have swung that tab from side to side and I can't tell any difference in how the bike runs. In the tear down, that was left as is, so no need to bother with it.
Hi Mark. At 1:34 you unplugged Y connector. Do they connect to anything? Also the vent line of fuel tank, does it connect to any pipe? Thank you
The Y connector drains at the bottom of the bike. I did not work on the fuel tank vent line. But I imagine it also drains at the bottom of the bike.
also don't forget ya'll hondas have cheap parts! the carb is cheap... like 80 bucks. also if it's a barn find old bike that been sittin you don't know if the float has a leak or any interior parts need to be replaced in the carb etc until you open it... then maybe you end up with a spare carb with a different sized jet hole for different altitude etc... also... wann make sure the boots are not cracked and air is not clogged up etc -that can act like carb issue. especially those boots... anything rubber or plastic that gets sun i'd check that first.
You say cheap parts but cheap parts on these old Honda's are high quality compare to nowadays. These are bulletproof. Cheap bolts.. yeah... Cheap parts? Not for an entry level bike

i think they are supposed to be unplugged, they are vents. but i'm not sure.
From what I know it is an overflow or vent. I know it leads below the bike and dumps on the ground if there is like too much gas not being used in the carb.

Go to Partzilla, type in your bike and go to to carburetor. They have factory parts /oem list and it’ll show you how the hoses go.
I followed to the T on this video.
I have 2 hoses that are loose and floating on their own. I know one should do that. The 2nd one i can't figure out where it goes. It has a mini tightner ring. They are long hoses. Can you show where those two long hoses go? Its not turning on.... Not sure if this has something to do with it not turning on. Any small things i need to check also? Please help :(
You ever find out where those hoses went? I actually have the same problem. I didn't keep an eye on them when i took it apart, cleaned it, still not running.
I just bought a 2001. My issues are the bike will only stay running on choke, but with choke on it hide very high. After warming up I can lower the choke, and sometime finess it to stay running by giving it gas without the choke on. But when I try to ride it, as soon as I give it throttle it wants to die, unless I snap the throttle really far(best I can explain) the bike jerks and is hard to keep running and dies. I can put it on choke and basically idle the way home. What is the problem?
Like I said in the video, the problem is most likely a plugged jet. Take the carb apart and soak and then blow some air through the little holes in the jets until they are clear.

What size manifold is that?
Carb is loose. Choke is still stuck. Help!
Those 2 screws on the carb…. One of mine are stripped real bad
On the fuel line side, the hose that comes out the side, and the one at the bottom of carb. Mine y in together but goes nowhere, i turn gas on and it leaks, im missing something...
So on the petcock side there's top left ... Think that's one y's to the bottom... Then drains under bike. Basically an overflow so if it's leaking could be due to rebuild. Bottom right is fuel and connects to petcock
Check float level. Google specs and use the ruler from a feeler gauge if you don’t have a small paper one. Needle and seat could be shot as well
Is 17.5mm -18.3mm in service manual if memory serves correct
Where did you find a replacement manifold gasket?
I made my own out of gasket paper
No gasket? There's an o ring there on the manifold

I cleaned mine three times and now it starts and idles but dies when I rev it slowly, doesn’t die when I rev fast like pumping throttle. Also, dies right away when I shift to gear even after I cut kickstand switch wires and have kick stand upward. Only other thing I did was cut 4” off of exhaust for some noise…..Please help! Bike was running smooth before all this.

you need to get a bigger jet for the carb
Thanks guys I fixed mine by flipping the little piece on the main jet that goes in before the needle I had put it in the wrong way, looks identical but upon careful observation I noticed that one end of the small piece was flat (where the long needle goes in and out form vacuum end) and the other end has a little curve allowing for better sitting from the part we screw in (the main jet from carb bowl area).

This video is to show you how to remove it. Since you removed the carburetor yourself you would obviously know where the hoses went.

You might want to remove the air cleaner boot and learn how to rebuild a carburetor.
This is a video for cleaning a carburetor not changing the jet on the carburetor which is unnecessary. The air cleaner boot was removed did you see it go into the can?
