    Looks like an OEX modern version of the Dutch Army Hooped Bivi. I think they could have included a side entrance zip.

    This is a great review and it looks like a very nice bivi. Trekmates have introduced two similar hooped bivis recently - the Squall and the Storm - and it would be interesting to know how all these models compare in terms of breathability, which is the biggest issue with many of these hooped bivis. I have a Dutch army hooped bivi, which is very breathable but a bit heavy, and a Highlander Falcon hooped bivi, which is lighter but also pretty good in terms of breathability.

    Hey man I just got the Salamanda recently - thanks for the vids, they really helped me choose. Stayed in it for a test run in the garden over the weekend, typically it rained so was battened down for the night without views! But otherwise it's grand, packs down amazingly small. Cheers!

      I'd like to know what you think a year on? I'm after a hooped bivi, but with so many choices, I can't make up my mind.

    • @boycy69
      @boycy69 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscar38 tbh I have barely used it. It's great if weather is going to be good, but if it rains then you're basically stuck lying down. I also found it hard to keep the footbox off my feet, which led to moisture wicking through to my sleeping bag.
      I've since bought a Big Agnes tent that packs small, isn't much heavier, huge space inside, and pitches without the flysheet when I want to look at the stars.

    Thanks for sharing this with us Dan. It looks like the OEX designers have looked closely at other brands and learnt from them. The raised foot end is great as is the ventilation system. I didn’t like my Dutch hooped bivi height - was quite low. This looks a bit taller maybe? Did you think you’ll be using it with a tarp so you can keep a rucksack dry? Cheers Dan and ATB - Ben👍

    Shame it doesnt appear to be stocked by Go Outdors anymore, id have gone for one of these! 5000mm = 5 meters of water in tests put on top of the fabric before it starts to penetrate the material. Its pretty reasonable but the best tents and jackets are now giving up to 10,000mm. The HH stands for Hydrostatic Head = the resistance of the fabric to water penetration, so this has a 5000mm Hydrostatic head, and the base is more waterproof at 7000mm HH, requiring a column of water 7 meters tall to penetrate the fabric. PU stands for Poly-urethane which is like an artificial rubber material.

  • @andrewbeal6866

    Just spent 3 nights in very wet weather. I seam sealed the stitching (thank god). Put a line off the top the hoop forward which keeps the bag tight. They originally advertise the fabric as breathable but have now removed the wording. The fabric is a dry bag material 100% waterproof, so expect a lot of condensation. Gortex and event material will also condensate and will leak after perlonged rainfall. So this tent will perform best on summit camps in high winds with plenty of ventilation. I combated the condensation by using my OEX Bush Pro Bivi bag..
    It is what it is, not a bad hooped Bivi.

    Interesting video but I have to admit I'm rather confused by this Bivi when it gets to the specs...
    I can understand the purpose of the OEX Bush Pro Bivvi. 450gr, fits in a large pocket, waterproof, breathable etc... Add a little tarp to and it makes totally sense for people who need an extremely lightweight and compact to carry shelter for bushcrafting, for a bug-out bag or maybe emergency scenarios like going on a hike and getting stuck in the woods for the night... I might even get one for myself for similar reasons.
    Yet I don't understand who this Salamanda bivi is for... 1.2kg is not that lightweight for a single wall shelter, especially considering OEX also had the OEX Phoxx EV1 tent. I have one myself. It's not perfect. If you're over 6ft tall like me it's pretty small and coffin like but for a one nighter, that does the job. Spec wise the EV1 weighted 1.25kg (50gr more... Not even the weight a lightweight gas stove) and looked a bit roomier. It had two walls to reduce condensation and provide some room for a little backpack. And once packed it looks about the same size as that bivi. Even the retail price was about the same...
    So I'm not bashing OEX by saying all that. I have several of their products and it's true that they're good quality for a good price. I'm just comparing two products of their range and I'm trying to understand why someone looking for a OEX shelter would choose the Salamanda over the EV1. I mean unless the OEX stopped making the EV1, I don't see what would be the benefits of that Salamanda Bivi over the EV1 tent.
    What do you think @English Woodsman ?

    • @englishwoodsman

      Hi mate great comment, it's just one of them thing great in one way but rubbish in another

    • @hammerhead2869
      @hammerhead2869 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@englishwoodsman Hi. Thanks for your reply.
      Yes I guess it's all about compromises as always with any type of gear.
      It's just kind of a weird move from OEX to have two products at the same price, that serve the exact same purpose when one of those products seems a lot better that the other one at least spec wise. I haven't tried that Bivi. I don't know how good or bad it actually is.
      But if that Bivi had been cheaper that would have made better sense to me.
      Or maybe OEX stopped making the EV1 and that Bivi comes as a replacement of the EV1 in their range. That could be possible as well...

    PU (Polyurethane) Synthetic Leather is a man made material that will represent the look and feel of Genuine Leather but in fact is NOT. This PU material is far less durable, considerably cheaper in cost, and may not last long if used often. Say them.personally I've found it depends on how rough you treat things as to how they last. also the information may be out of date - some fabrics have come a long way from what they were, take GoreTex - had to learn to be better.

    Bought a couple of these for a recent cycling trip, returned them after one night camping when a moderate dew was sufficient to leave our sleeping bags soaking, god knows what they would have been like in the rain. There's no way you can sleep in them without your bag coming into contact with the upper tent material which probably makes the problem worse. Maybe my expectations were a bit high but when I buy a tent I expect it to keep water out! Can't see how these could ever be called waterproof...
