You brought back 50 year old memories. When I was 14 I went to a "wilderness camp" in Wyoming state, USA. We climbed a mountain, the entire top of which was scree. On the way down the kids I was "with" thought it'd be funny to leave the New York City kid behind. I got down to the tree line, found a fence, which I knew we hadn't crossed, then a creek, which I knew we hadn't crossed, so I knew I was lost. As it was getting dark I headed back up the mountain as I knew that's where they would first look for me. Found a clump of rocks that formed a triangular "cave" that appeared to be uninhabited. Took my Boy Scout poncho and did my best to cover the entrance. Next morning I heard people calling for me. Fortunately reunited with camp. Explained what happened and adults were impressed; fellow campers actually envious! 1973 and still vividly remember it.
Yes it sounds like your lack of sleep is due to maybe not much exercise ,or your rooms too warm experts say you sleep better ,when it's slightly cool .

Love your videos. When I was in the infantry in Canada, during training sometimes all we had for an hour or two at night in -35C weather was our Therm-a-Rest, down sleeping bag and Gore-Tex bivi. It was a blessed reprieve that made me more appreciative of all the relative luxuries I now enjoy in my post-military life.
I infrequently visit a former Canadian infantry training area in British Columbia. To train cave explorers in vertical rope skills, Using fixed steel installed for military climbing . Other found relics were brass unit insignia, cartridges, live munitions, etc. WW-2 training was done for the Air Force and Navy also.
One of greatest feelings in the world and life generally is being warm, dry and cosy in a wilderness setting during stormy weather particularly during the colder months. All that wonderful fresh air howling around, the pelting rain and the clear stars above make for a magnificent connection between you and wild nature. Every human on earth should know this feeling.
Howling winds and passing storms, all sane people are wrapped up warm in front of a lovely fire, with a nice warm mug of cocoa. Not our Claire; she's up in the mountains with not much more than a glorified bin bag to spend the night in! Amazing woman.
Yet somehow, I kinda envied her. Or at least her attitude and sense of freedom. Scary conditions, but seemed to not really give a toss. Now researching Bivvy bags!
@@frankmcnally01 No, I was speaking as someone who gets drawn in to Claire's videos, as so many of her audience do. In my younger days, I did many of the things that Claire now showcases, and feel a strong connection to what she advocates, and her philosophy.
Thank you so much. I live in Alaska and have been jeep camping for the last 7 years. I’ve worked and camped in subarctic temperatures always prepared. I love how you put this into an emergency scenario and still conveyed that staying calm could mean the difference. You’ve inspired me to tread outside my comfort zone with a bivy.
This is cool! In the military - we call this hard bagging, and it is sometimes used to sneak a couple hours of sleep when the tactical situation permits. A couple of tips going foward would be to store your sleeping bag inside the bivvy bag and then store the both of them in a 60L drybag. The reason for this is it prevents a lot of the water getting onto your sleeping bag, as you mentioned in your video, during the unpacking and packing. Dicipline in this sort of situation is what will keep you alive should you find yourself staying out for more than one night. Keep the sleeping bag as dry as possible at all costs! Another tip is to ditch the layers of clothing at night. Never sleep in wet gear - It has a double effect of preventing the sleeping bag from effectively warming you (especially GORETEX), as well as potentially bringing water and dampness into your bag. The way I like to do it is I have a couple of spare dry bags where I keep kit that may be slightly damp at night, in order to wear it the next day or at night should I need to get up.
Done most of my camping in a bivi bag or sometimes with a shelter sheet. Never owned a tent like the open freedom. So well done, especially first attempt in winter. To lessen the time in the bivi bag try walking more in the low light (safely of course). Then cook under torch light. Have some great camping memories in a bivi bag in the Lake District. The more you use bivi bags the more used to it and better sleep you will get. The benefits the close to nature, that night sky. The memories you can do it.
It takes you back to Maslow‘s hierarchy of needs. Instead of focusing on all our first world crap, we focus on shelter and cease to worry about whether we will be accepted at some stuff shirt social setting.
It's good to camp where you can still see the lights of a town in the far distance. Those lights give you a sense of assurance and comfort when you're camping alone.
I have never used a bivy bag, but I did switch from using tents to just using tarps for camping. I always felt closed in with tents and didn't like it. With a tarp you can vary the setup according to the conditions, and can usually have one side raised to provide a view. It makes me feel more connected to the world around me. My last overnight camp was a couple of years ago now, but I still have fond memories of it. I live in the Yukon, Canada, and had just hiked to the top of a mountain in a place in southern Yukon called Cariboo Crossing. The mountain top looked a lot like the place where you were in this video. When I got to the top, I found a spot similar to what you had and pitched my tarp really low to the ground, like a low pyramid. I used a hiking pole for the center, and gave myself just enough room underneath to be able to get in, with just enough sitting room. The rain started just as I finished setting up, but I stayed snug and dry, and even had one side raised enough to have a good view to enjoy. I imagine that a tarp and bivy combo would work very well. The tarp would keep the wind and rain off of the bivy, and I think it would be very snug! By the way, I am now 73 years old, so you should be able to look forward to many, many more years of exploring and enjoying the outdoors!
Heyy, the Yukon looks so beautiful! Totally agree with you, I don't very much like feeling enclosed and I love being able to lift the side up on a tarp - I just tried the Pyramid recently and was relieved to be able to open it out in the morning. They're so versatile. It is soo amazing that you're still able to do this in your 70's! 😮😍 I'll be 40 next year and I can only hope I can keep doing this for a long time yet. I have a connective tissue disorder that affects my joints, ligaments etc so I'm making the most of doing what I can while I can. I carry a bivvy . I’ve had a tent torn to shreds and was able to get tucked in between a rock and a fallen tree. A bit uncomfortable that night but I was able to get back to safety. I took what was left of the tent with me… leave no trace….
Good idea. I already use a sleeping bag on a thinly-padded surface at home. I go to sleep at night imagining that I'm outdoors (yeah I'm weird). Don't know why I didn't think of sound FX. 👍
There are multiple ways to experiment with how to protect yourself during harsh weather conditions. I went through a couple of nights in northern part of Norway in outrageous cold and windy conditions (-35c) in January. Due to the wind I gave up putting up a tent and instead in a sleeping bag and bivy rolled up in a 3m×3m tarp. Woke up in the morning with the tarp completely hardened due to the frost - but bivy & sleeping bag all good. Slept warm and comfortable.
I love bivi bags. As well as being super light and the best way to camp, they come in handy for a surprising number of other things - keeping a casualty warm, keeping kit dry overnight, carrying kit when your bag unexpectedly splits open. Mine stays in my bag even if I"m just hiking. Great vid - thanks!

Why can't we hit the like button more than once? Claire, you are definitely mad, but that was really good practice in the event it ever happened for real. Just a little tip for you, from someone who used to do this stuff for a living (army life ehh) but who now likes a warm bed instead......if you put your sleeping mat inside your bivi bag, then if you roll over in the night (as I was prone to do) your sleeping mat won't turn into a kite and disappear into the night while you sleep.....if you get my drift!

I use a bivvy bag when i go cycling and camping for a night or 2. So easy to use and as you said make a massive difference in wind and rain. Used mine at dinorwic just after Christmas and stayed in a little cave shelter. One of best nights sleep I've had. Loving your vids ❤😊
That was a delight, thanks! I started using a tent about 3 years ago but since the 1980s I've been a goretex bivvy bag camper. For me it's all about learning to wriggle - out of your kit, into your gonk bag, back into your kit, without getting out of the bb. Also, the rucksack is shoved inside a heavy duty dustbin bag outside and the boots come in with you. All your clothes are your pillow. The big issue was: cut-down sleeping mat inside or larger but wet one outside.
Great adventure! I've done this a few times in the Scottish mountains since getting a bivy bag last year. Gives so much more flexibility in where you sleep compared with a tent that needs to be on flat ground. And you can find sheltered spots behind rocks and things where you would never be able to fit a tent. Find it's actually warmer than a tent as well, as you're in a smaller enclosed space as long as you keep the wind out the face hole. Only done in relatively good weather so far though - so it's good to see it would be useful in stormy conditions as well.

This is my favourite of all your videos . It looks so cosy with just your face showing , experiencing the weather while you’re all cosy warm and dry . Your voice is very calming and similar to one of the presenters of ‘night tracks’ on radio 3 .
Cool little experiment, reminds me of when I was in the military. I'd suggest you get one of those small pumps for your mat and pillow so that no moist enters either of them. Mould can get in the mat and pillow from blowing them up with your breath.
Pretty rigorous experience, Claire. Good video. In Japan several years ago, I was at the hut near the summit of Japan's second highest mountain Mr Kitadake, in the Southern Alps. It was June, but cold, maybe 10C, 3000 m, 20 knot wind, blowing rain. Before sunset I saw a bird trying to get over the ridge, it was flying sideways. I chose to sleep outside in the fresh air and blowing rain over the dorm room with 20 snoring men and an unvented kerosene (paraffin) heater. My asthma was going nuts. I had an REI Minimalist Bivy (Discontinued, $12 parking lot sale.) It wasn't as nice as the one in the video. It had a big mesh panel facing straight up. I had all kinds of plans on how to make this work with rain, but none of them with me. Immediately, it was obvious, just twist the bag and the mesh, away from the rain. What water did puddle in it was well below my air mattress. I was also hunkered down behind some large drums. One of the best nights of my life. My air pad was inside. You don't want that blowing away. So I think a bivy should be waterproof up the sides so you can turn away from the wind and not soak up water on the ground. And something bivys need more of: Strong attachment points so you can anchor it. (Sleeping bags too. Every use a rain fly on a very slight incline and wake up half out of the bottom of the fly?) A bivy should also have some space above your head, that's where your phone, camera, GPS, wallet, glasses, water bottle, etc... goes. I love my bivy. Used it a lot. We want to be outside, that's why we hike. With a bivy, you're never inside. I've used it outside in rain, inside a tent, in the back of my car, in hostels and hotel rooms. There are few things in life better than being warm, cozy, and dry while breathing really cold fresh air. I've done this down to -10f so -23C? It is a bit daunting to climb out in the morning. I think some of the fancier bivys are too heavy and elaborate. They weigh almost as much as a tent. And you don't want any space inside, you want the bivy to be slack over your body. Space allows water to condense. No space is dry. That's another argument against the expensive ones (and every single one I've ever seen on Go Fund Me.) Your tent should look puffy and your bivy should look slack. Last year sailing across the Pacific I slept in a SOL Bivy I paid $25 for on Amazon. (SOL is Stay Out Longer). It's more like a water proof mummy bag cover. With a fleece liner and a down quilt (just one from Costco, not that current fad nonsense) it was warm and cozy. And it held up for over 30 nights good as new. That surprised me. No room inside for an air mattress, but a definite carry for emergencies. The only thing lighter and cheaper would be a very large heavy duty plastic garbage bag. You should always carry at least one for everyone you are with. What I learned about preparedness. Most people aren't, so you have to have extras. But get a basic bivy and sleep outside. it's a superpower.

Thx for sharing. Me sitting on the sofa, drinking a hot Glühwein and enjoying your sometimes crazy but always good adventures, your positive spirit, you loving nature. Especially when remembering there isn't anyone else, so you do not only experience the often bad weather conditions but additionally are filming this by yourself, which means e.g. to get out a lot out of comfort zone even during the night, setting up the camera to create interesting scenes etc., so in fact multiplying the efforts of what we see ... You're amazing.

We used something similar in the Corps, it was called the USMC 3 Sleeping System. It included the 3 season and extreme cold weather bags. Extremely expensive.
Your bivi bags have been your best friend in many videos. Mostly saving you from tent problems. But using it as your main shelter in that weather did seem a bit mad. But if anyone could make it work and be smiling throughout it's you. Thanks once again for taking along.

This brought back wonderful memories of family camping in Cornwall. Myself, my Wife and our two young boys camped for two full summer weeks every year in Cornwall and there would always be at least one stormy night of wind and rain. The frame tent rattled and rolled, it never failed us but we would cuddle together in our bags and listen to the storm in the pitch black unable to sleep because of the noise. Not quite what you went through but it always filled us with a sense of adventure and danger!

I simply chuck my sleeping bag on a downmat on the ground (no bivvy bag). The sleeping bag is waterproof & breathable, so can withstand any weather thrown at it.
You seriously do amaze me Claire. To purposely go out in bad weather and sleep in a bivvy for 16 hours. You must be mad. (In a good way.) I think that is a fantastic idea, you have your safety net, (spare tent, short distance from the car). To actually stick it out all night, I take my hat off to you. Very well done. I slept in a TAS bivvy bag during winter camping in Melbourne, Australia. Our worst temps are -3C because Australia. Bivvy adds +10 degrees, so in -3 it was 7 inside the bivvy. Add a $50 sleeping bag and some old army wool blanket, it was closer to 15-20C inside, which is optimal temp to induce sleep. Never slept better in my life, mate.
Haha, I'm just like that at home. When I take the rubbish out on a winter evening I'm such a wuss with the cold that I wonder how on earth I do things like this 😄
Brings back memory of my first wet weather bivy bag night in 1998, on top of Mount Binga, 8000 feet straddling the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique - I was alone, I wanted to walk light. My bivy bag was Gore Tex - high-tech wonder at the time... But it didn't feature a zipper, so I had to take position with slightly elevated upper body, so the hood would actually cover me. The problem is rarely the first night, but the next - when the bag hasn't quite entirely remained dry after the first night.
Excellent video. I’ve been thinking about getting a Bivy but I’m unsure how it will fit me. I’m a big guy. Great to see how it works without a tent in fairly nasty weather conditions. Love your adventurous spirit!
If you can find a British army Goretex bag you should be okay. I'm 6'3" and there's room to store boots etc inside the bottom of the bag to prevent them freezing.
Claire, fantastic video and love what you do. Pretty much every British Squaddie has been in this exact situation, after a route march, with heavy gear and ammo, then have to get up at 3am for a guard duty, it's not much fun, I can tell you. But with great training and reliance of your personal gear, we made it through. I watch your videos to chill out to, laugh in the appropriate places and whince at the others. What you do for wild camping is amazing, I for one would gladly follow you across any trail. Great job 👏 👍

So many people spoil it for the likes of us, leaving a mess and not being prepared if anything goes wrong. love watching your video's they are outstanding. I miss doing this sort of thing. I never used to use a tent but family life has caused me to gather a collections of them.Well done for introducing younger folk to the joys of a comfortable night in the rain without a tent.
I absolutely applaud you for going for it! I think it is important to be mentally prepared for bad situations but actually trying it several leagues better. Having experience with miserable survival scenarios makes you calmer and more self assured when going gets a bit tough. Next up, camping in a field of cows?! 😂
That was fantastic. I can't believe you slept that much! I have only slept in the open a handful of times, in Utah, Idaho and Nevada, but I vividly remember the sick of waking during the night to find the stars had moved while I slept. It was a primal experience.
Well done you! That's something I've always intended to do, but in the summer not the winter! And using my ever-present orange survival bag (and expecting my sleeping bag to get soaked with condensation...) But watching your video has made me think about getting a proper bivvi bag. But being confident that you can actually survive in an emergency scenario is a great confidence booster. I once had to sleep in a sodden (synthetic) sleeping bag(after falling into a river!) and wasn't at all sure it would work, but after a chilly first half-hour it was fine and by morning the inside of the bag was more or less dry from my body heat. After that I was no longer paranoid about getting my bag wet.
Haha just had memories of a mate called Ian Fox who slept in a Bin Bag having misheard his two brothers who were in the Para Regt and had mentioned Bivvy Bags :)
Do you get many visitors at night. Like field mice foxes etc. ? I remember having myarmout of my bag one night and a little field mouse came and perched o the back of my hand. I had alight on and it looked at me and wasnt afraid. We started at each other. It had small round little eyes. Perfectly round. Quite cute really. Then it scampered off. Nice vid. It's good to get confidence like that for survival. I'm ex military. Our instructors always repeated the important message that its physical but mainly mental. They would always get us to achieve things to get confidence. Like lighting a fire with wet wood. Not easy but ok if you know how. Keep up the good work Wildbeare.😅❤😊😮🎉❤❤❤

In the Army I used to watch the guys set up ponchos and stuff, I just got my bivvy bag out, it was set up so that it had my sleeping bag inside already and stuffed into the top of my bergan, my therma rest I would slide between the bag and bivvy, if it was a cold month I would tape to the thermarest a foil emergency blanket, I always managed to sleep well, the only difference is that the bivvy was pushed into the top of a bergan so if attacked at night, it could be stuffed into it immediately. But I have slept in some really low temperatures, wind and rain, but the best part was hearing the rain on the outside always made me sleepy. You made a common mistake and that everyone forgets the wind switches direction at night, this also happens near the coast. But you always make it fun and please keep up the good work, Like to see you use British Army kit for one video like to hear your opinion. All the best

It's a very good choice to experiment your worst case scenario, especially if you're serious about going outdoors because mishaps will happen but you'll be prepared. Big props!
Lovely. I ❤ the vibe of your video and being part of it in a way. The choice of Satie was pleasant too with shots of the Milky Way. I did something similar but in our winter of -26C on the shore of the northern most part of Lake Superior. The sound of ice cakes forming at night with the tide, changing it from water to 5m of ice off the shore. Centimetres of snowfall.
I've done this often, love sleeping outside, on one's own is best. One of my best experiences was sleeping on top of the cat bells in the lakes on Bonfire Night, just down from the top watching the fireworks and then sleeping. Walking up when the first walkers hit the top around 9 am. Or near the top of Skidhal Lakes in summer, which was quiet, and also the sunrises were some of the best I've seen. In the morning, when you feel new and refreshed.
Claire, you’re showing us the power of the bivi to get through the cold night after losing the tent to the wind - great survival tactic, we should be practicing ourselves and so glad the outcome was a comfortable scenic and pleasant experience! 🌱🌿🍄🙏
Having spent a fair amount of time in a bivy bag if you don’t mind me making a suggestion. Try a military grade bivy. They are a little thicker and slightly more rigid with a zipper that quickly opens if you need to get out fast. Under high winds they are far more comfortable. The one you had honestly made me think you were sleeping in the leg of one of those Wacky wavy inflatable tube men they use on car lots 😂. Lots of respect for a fellow solo camper and hiker. You have a great attitude and wonderful personality that is easy to enjoy. Thanks for the video.

Love your videos. When I was in the infantry in Canada, during training sometimes all we had for an hour or two at night in -35C weather was our Therm-a-Rest, down sleeping bag and Gore-Tex bivi. It was a blessed reprieve that made me more appreciative of all the relative luxuries I now enjoy in my post-military life.
I ditched the bouncing bomb and used 2 snugpacks together, can't beat it.
I infrequently visit a former Canadian infantry training area in British Columbia.
To train cave explorers in vertical rope skills, Using fixed steel installed for
military climbing . Other found relics were brass unit insignia, cartridges, live munitions, etc. WW-2 training was done for the Air Force and Navy also.
One of greatest feelings in the world and life generally is being warm, dry and cosy in a wilderness setting during stormy weather particularly during the colder months. All that wonderful fresh air howling around, the pelting rain and the clear stars above make for a magnificent connection between you and wild nature. Every human on earth should know this feeling.

Howling winds and passing storms, all sane people are wrapped up warm in front of a lovely fire, with a nice warm mug of cocoa. Not our Claire; she's up in the mountains with not much more than a glorified bin bag to spend the night in! Amazing woman.

Thank you so much. I live in Alaska and have been jeep camping for the last 7 years. I’ve worked and camped in subarctic temperatures always prepared. I love how you put this into an emergency scenario and still conveyed that staying calm could mean the difference. You’ve inspired me to tread outside my comfort zone with a bivy.
This is cool! In the military - we call this hard bagging, and it is sometimes used to sneak a couple hours of sleep when the tactical situation permits. A couple of tips going foward would be to store your sleeping bag inside the bivvy bag and then store the both of them in a 60L drybag. The reason for this is it prevents a lot of the water getting onto your sleeping bag, as you mentioned in your video, during the unpacking and packing. Dicipline in this sort of situation is what will keep you alive should you find yourself staying out for more than one night. Keep the sleeping bag as dry as possible at all costs! Another tip is to ditch the layers of clothing at night. Never sleep in wet gear - It has a double effect of preventing the sleeping bag from effectively warming you (especially GORETEX), as well as potentially bringing water and dampness into your bag. The way I like to do it is I have a couple of spare dry bags where I keep kit that may be slightly damp at night, in order to wear it the next day or at night should I need to get up.

It's really good to push yourself in a controlled situation. Like you said, it gives you confidence when things go bad for real.
Done most of my camping in a bivi bag or sometimes with a shelter sheet. Never owned a tent like the open freedom. So well done, especially first attempt in winter. To lessen the time in the bivi bag try walking more in the low light (safely of course). Then cook under torch light. Have some great camping memories in a bivi bag in the Lake District.
The more you use bivi bags the more used to it and better sleep you will get. The benefits the close to nature, that night sky. The memories you can do it.

In my 40s I did a PADI Rescue Diver course. The most important thing I learned was not only how to rescue others but how to rescue yourself.
It's good to camp where you can still see the lights of a town in the far distance. Those lights give you a sense of assurance and comfort when you're camping alone.
Maybe when you first start camping. Now if I can see anything man made from where I'm camping I don't even feel like I'm in the thr woods lol
When I'm camping, I find if I can sense the presence of any other humans it kind of ruins it for me 😆
I have never used a bivy bag, but I did switch from using tents to just using tarps for camping.
I always felt closed in with tents and didn't like it. With a tarp you can vary the setup according to the conditions, and can usually have one side raised to provide a view. It makes me feel more connected to the world around me.
My last overnight camp was a couple of years ago now, but I still have fond memories of it. I live in the Yukon, Canada, and had just hiked to the top of a mountain in a place in southern Yukon called Cariboo Crossing. The mountain top looked a lot like the place where you were in this video.
When I got to the top, I found a spot similar to what you had and pitched my tarp really low to the ground, like a low pyramid. I used a hiking pole for the center, and gave myself just enough room underneath to be able to get in, with just enough sitting room.
The rain started just as I finished setting up, but I stayed snug and dry, and even had one side raised enough to have a good view to enjoy.
I imagine that a tarp and bivy combo would work very well. The tarp would keep the wind and rain off of the bivy, and I think it would be very snug!
By the way, I am now 73 years old, so you should be able to look forward to many, many more years of exploring and enjoying the outdoors!

Heyy, the Yukon looks so beautiful! Totally agree with you, I don't very much like feeling enclosed and I love being able to lift the side up on a tarp - I just tried the Pyramid recently and was relieved to be able to open it out in the morning. They're so versatile.

I carry a bivvy . I’ve had a tent torn to shreds and was able to get tucked in between a rock and a fallen tree. A bit uncomfortable that night but I was able to get back to safety. I took what was left of the tent with me… leave no trace….

Good idea. I already use a sleeping bag on a thinly-padded surface at home. I go to sleep at night imagining that I'm outdoors (yeah I'm weird). Don't know why I didn't think of sound FX. 👍

There are multiple ways to experiment with how to protect yourself during harsh weather conditions. I went through a couple of nights in northern part of Norway in outrageous cold and windy conditions (-35c) in January.
Due to the wind I gave up putting up a tent and instead in a sleeping bag and bivy rolled up in a 3m×3m tarp. Woke up in the morning with the tarp completely hardened due to the frost - but bivy & sleeping bag all good. Slept warm and comfortable.
I love bivi bags. As well as being super light and the best way to camp, they come in handy for a surprising number of other things - keeping a casualty warm, keeping kit dry overnight, carrying kit when your bag unexpectedly splits open. Mine stays in my bag even if I"m just hiking.

Why can't we hit the like button more than once? Claire, you are definitely mad, but that was really good practice in the event it ever happened for real. Just a little tip for you, from someone who used to do this stuff for a living (army life ehh) but who now likes a warm bed instead......if you put your sleeping mat inside your bivi bag, then if you roll over in the night (as I was prone to do) your sleeping mat won't turn into a kite and disappear into the night while you sleep.....if you get my drift!
Top tip. Put your sleep mat inside your bivvy bag. Keeps it in place and secure

I use a bivvy bag when i go cycling and camping for a night or 2. So easy to use and as you said make a massive difference in wind and rain. Used mine at dinorwic just after Christmas and stayed in a little cave shelter. One of best nights sleep I've had. Loving your vids ❤😊
That was a delight, thanks! I started using a tent about 3 years ago but since the 1980s I've been a goretex bivvy bag camper. For me it's all about learning to wriggle - out of your kit, into your gonk bag, back into your kit, without getting out of the bb. Also, the rucksack is shoved inside a heavy duty dustbin bag outside and the boots come in with you. All your clothes are your pillow. The big issue was: cut-down sleeping mat inside or larger but wet one outside.
Great adventure! I've done this a few times in the Scottish mountains since getting a bivy bag last year. Gives so much more flexibility in where you sleep compared with a tent that needs to be on flat ground. And you can find sheltered spots behind rocks and things where you would never be able to fit a tent. Find it's actually warmer than a tent as well, as you're in a smaller enclosed space as long as you keep the wind out the face hole.
Only done in relatively good weather so far though - so it's good to see it would be useful in stormy conditions as well.

I'd suggest you get one of those small pumps for your mat and pillow so that no moist enters either of them. Mould can get in the mat and pillow from blowing them up with your breath.
Pretty rigorous experience, Claire. Good video. In Japan several years ago, I was at the hut near the summit of Japan's second highest mountain Mr Kitadake, in the Southern Alps. It was June, but cold, maybe 10C, 3000 m, 20 knot wind, blowing rain. Before sunset I saw a bird trying to get over the ridge, it was flying sideways. I chose to sleep outside in the fresh air and blowing rain over the dorm room with 20 snoring men and an unvented kerosene (paraffin) heater. My asthma was going nuts. I had an REI Minimalist Bivy (Discontinued, $12 parking lot sale.) It wasn't as nice as the one in the video. It had a big mesh panel facing straight up. I had all kinds of plans on how to make this work with rain, but none of them with me. Immediately, it was obvious, just twist the bag and the mesh, away from the rain. What water did puddle in it was well below my air mattress. I was also hunkered down behind some large drums. One of the best nights of my life.
My air pad was inside. You don't want that blowing away. So I think a bivy should be waterproof up the sides so you can turn away from the wind and not soak up water on the ground.
And something bivys need more of: Strong attachment points so you can anchor it. (Sleeping bags too. Every use a rain fly on a very slight incline and wake up half out of the bottom of the fly?) A bivy should also have some space above your head, that's where your phone, camera, GPS, wallet, glasses, water bottle, etc... goes.
I love my bivy. Used it a lot. We want to be outside, that's why we hike. With a bivy, you're never inside. I've used it outside in rain, inside a tent, in the back of my car, in hostels and hotel rooms. There are few things in life better than being warm, cozy, and dry while breathing really cold fresh air. I've done this down to -10f so -23C? It is a bit daunting to climb out in the morning.
I think some of the fancier bivys are too heavy and elaborate. They weigh almost as much as a tent. And you don't want any space inside, you want the bivy to be slack over your body. Space allows water to condense. No space is dry. That's another argument against the expensive ones (and every single one I've ever seen on Go Fund Me.) Your tent should look puffy and your bivy should look slack.
Last year sailing across the Pacific I slept in a SOL Bivy I paid $25 for on Amazon. (SOL is Stay Out Longer). It's more like a water proof mummy bag cover. With a fleece liner and a down quilt (just one from Costco, not that current fad nonsense) it was warm and cozy. And it held up for over 30 nights good as new. That surprised me. No room inside for an air mattress, but a definite carry for emergencies. The only thing lighter and cheaper would be a very large heavy duty plastic garbage bag. You should always carry at least one for everyone you are with. What I learned about preparedness. Most people aren't, so you have to have extras. But get a basic bivy and sleep outside. it's a superpower.

We used something similar in the Corps, it was called the USMC 3 Sleeping System. It included the 3 season and extreme cold weather bags. Extremely expensive.

This brought back wonderful memories of family camping in Cornwall. Myself, my Wife and our two young boys camped for two full summer weeks every year in Cornwall and there would always be at least one stormy night of wind and rain. The frame tent rattled and rolled, it never failed us but we would cuddle together in our bags and listen to the storm in the pitch black unable to sleep because of the noise. Not quite what you went through but it always filled us with a sense of adventure and danger!

I actually prefer to sleep on a mountain without a tent and no bivvy in the winter. I simply chuck my sleeping bag on a downmat on the ground (no bivvy bag). The sleeping bag is waterproof & breathable, so can withstand any weather thrown at it.

I slept in a TAS bivvy bag during winter camping in Melbourne, Australia. Our worst temps are -3C because Australia. Bivvy adds +10 degrees, so in -3 it was 7 inside the bivvy. Add a $50 sleeping bag and some old army wool blanket, it was closer to 15-20C inside, which is optimal temp to induce sleep. Never slept better in my life, mate.

Brings back memory of my first wet weather bivy bag night in 1998, on top of Mount Binga, 8000 feet straddling the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique - I was alone, I wanted to walk light. My bivy bag was Gore Tex - high-tech wonder at the time... But it didn't feature a zipper, so I had to take position with slightly elevated upper body, so the hood would actually cover me. The problem is rarely the first night, but the next - when the bag hasn't quite entirely remained dry after the first night.
Excellent video. I’ve been thinking about getting a Bivy but I’m unsure how it will fit me. I’m a big guy. Great to see how it works without a tent in fairly nasty weather conditions.

If you can find a British army Goretex bag you should be okay. I'm 6'3" and there's room to store boots etc inside the bottom of the bag to prevent them freezing.

Pretty much every British Squaddie has been in this exact situation, after a route march, with heavy gear and ammo, then have to get up at 3am for a guard duty, it's not much fun, I can tell you. But with great training and reliance of your personal gear, we made it through.
I watch your videos to chill out to, laugh in the appropriate places and whince at the others. What you do for wild camping is amazing, I for one would gladly follow you across any trail. Great job 👏 👍

I miss doing this sort of thing. I never used to use a tent but family life has caused me to gather a collections of them.Well done for introducing younger folk to the joys of a comfortable night in the rain without a tent.
I absolutely applaud you for going for it! I think it is important to be mentally prepared for bad situations but actually trying it several leagues better. Having experience with miserable survival scenarios makes you calmer and more self assured when going gets a bit tough. Next up, camping in a field of cows?! 😂

That was fantastic. I can't believe you slept that much! I have only slept in the open a handful of times, in Utah, Idaho and Nevada, but I vividly remember the sick of waking during the night to find the stars had moved while I slept. It was a primal experience.
Well done you! That's something I've always intended to do, but in the summer not the winter! And using my ever-present orange survival bag (and expecting my sleeping bag to get soaked with condensation...) But watching your video has made me think about getting a proper bivvi bag. But being confident that you can actually survive in an emergency scenario is a great confidence booster. I once had to sleep in a sodden (synthetic) sleeping bag(after falling into a river!) and wasn't at all sure it would work, but after a chilly first half-hour it was fine and by morning the inside of the bag was more or less dry from my body heat. After that I was no longer paranoid about getting my bag wet.

Do you get many visitors at night. Like field mice foxes etc. ? I remember having myarmout of my bag one night and a little field mouse came and perched o the back of my hand. I had alight on and it looked at me and wasnt afraid. We started at each other. It had small round little eyes. Perfectly round. Quite cute really. Then it scampered off. Nice vid. It's good to get confidence like that for survival. I'm ex military. Our instructors always repeated the important message that its physical but mainly mental. They would always get us to achieve things to get confidence. Like lighting a fire with wet wood. Not easy but ok if you know how. Keep up the good work Wildbeare.😅❤😊😮🎉❤❤❤

In the Army I used to watch the guys set up ponchos and stuff, I just got my bivvy bag out, it was set up so that it had my sleeping bag inside already and stuffed into the top of my bergan, my therma rest I would slide between the bag and bivvy, if it was a cold month I would tape to the thermarest a foil emergency blanket, I always managed to sleep well, the only difference is that the bivvy was pushed into the top of a bergan so if attacked at night, it could be stuffed into it immediately. But I have slept in some really low temperatures, wind and rain, but the best part was hearing the rain on the outside always made me sleepy. You made a common mistake and that everyone forgets the wind switches direction at night, this also happens near the coast. But you always make it fun and please keep up the good work, Like to see you use British Army kit for one video like to hear your opinion. All the best

I live in BC, Canada, we have grizzley bears, wolves, cougars, coyotes, etc. alot of animals that can kill. You are lucky.
We have seagulls, absolute arseholes and I’d take a bear over one of them tossers any day
There are also wolves in Europe, bears too. And wild boars that can be dangerous. Snakes. I wonder what would Australians say though. I'm sure they could easily score off on us. 😂
And in all 3 , it’s the people who are the most dangerous to you.
I'd put a ring on it! Come visit the Olympic Mountains in the great Pacific Northwest and there's a spot in our nature school just for you! Keep it up!

Lovely. I ❤ the vibe of your video and being part of it in a way. The choice of Satie was pleasant too with shots of the Milky Way. I did something similar but in our winter of -26C on the shore of the northern most part of Lake Superior. The sound of ice cakes forming at night with the tide, changing it from water to 5m of ice off the shore. Centimetres of snowfall.
I watched this a few months ago and it inspired me to sleep rough in odd places in a tent for three weeks in Shetland, Orkney and Stornoway.
I've done this often, love sleeping outside, on one's own is best.
One of my best experiences was sleeping on top of the cat bells in the lakes on Bonfire Night, just down from the top watching the fireworks and then sleeping. Walking up when the first walkers hit the top around 9 am.
Or near the top of Skidhal Lakes in summer, which was quiet, and also the sunrises were some of the best I've seen.
In the morning, when you feel new and refreshed.

Having spent a fair amount of time in a bivy bag if you don’t mind me making a suggestion. Try a military grade bivy. They are a little thicker and slightly more rigid with a zipper that quickly opens if you need to get out fast. Under high winds they are far more comfortable. The one you had honestly made me think you were sleeping in the leg of one of those Wacky wavy inflatable tube men they use on car lots 😂. Lots of respect for a fellow solo camper and hiker. You have a great attitude and wonderful personality that is easy to enjoy. Thanks for the video.
