    A tarp and a bivvy is the ideal combo for me ... lightweight, and optional rain cover if
    the weather's grim. But there is a lot to be said for bivvys with a midge net. Also
    stops snakes coming in, for warmth, not that that's much of a problem in the UK

    Been really enjoying the videos. I have just bought the Salamander. I already own the Oex Phoxx 1V2 but it can be a pain pitching inner first especially when it's raining.
    The reason I went with the Salamander is it will come in handy when I am out shooting Astro. As it's quick to pitch and will give me somewhere to chill out while the camera is doing its thing.

    First off, loving the new intro! I just did my first sleep in a normal bivvy last night. Not sue I slept that well but maybe that was the excitement of star gazing. All in all I enjoyed it though and would definitely do it again soon. No condensation issues at all.

    spot on mate - just bought one, and hopefully up some mountains with it. For one night even if it is sweaty i'll be fine. Beats faffing up 4000 ft in a hoolie, and low profile for winds. Great channel mate, and always very very deatiled reviews. thanks again and ATB

    I think I'd be the same and go for a bivvy, the hooped bivvy is so close to a tent! I think a bivvy bag and tarp just give you a lot more options 👍

      Bit silly of it really, all you need is a place to put that pole in a "normal" bivvi and some kind flap, done.

    im not really into bivvy bags but i did find this an interesting vid dan . i think i would go more for the normal bivvy bag .rather than a hooped bivvy . if i was going to the hassle of putting poles in the bivvy bag you might as well get a one man tent ? thats just my opinion ? like you dan i think the other style has more uses ?

    You don’t need a tarp for hooped bivi but you do for the bag. I only paid £84 for my Salamanda, I too struggled to get hooped pole in position. Did a back garden wild camp in mine last weekend, first bit of OEX kit I’ve purchased.!

  • @ToiletDuckify
    @ToiletDuckify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For a bivvi bag, the British Army issue goretex one is far better, and cheaper (got mine for about £30 on eBay). It's also twice as waterproof (10,000mm HH) and breathable.

      @vvs3796 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree.. they r great, in a worst weather u feel protected. but they are a bit heavy and bulky for long hikes,so i was looking for lighter and smaller alternatives . but they can cost a fortune, so i m not sure if it's worth it, since expensive doesnt always mean quality. bush pro bivi could be an option but again i have doubts about quality ..

    A nice concise video and good to hear your view on the pros and cons. My feelings would come down on the bivy bag rather than the hooped. That's more because I would probably have a tarp over the hooped anyway, as if it is going to rain you are likely to get yourself and your kit wet getting in and out of the hooped. And in that case you may as well go for the tarp plus the lightest sleeping system option (i.e. the bivy bag). Keep up the videos and keep well.

    Thanks for doing this video Dan. I find I get condensation in my Bivvi bag, regardless wether my head has been in or not. Mine's the Alpkit Bivvi but it looks almost identical to the OEX? So, I was thinking of getting the OEX hooped Bivvi, hoping there would be not only a bit more room, which there is, but with the vents I was hoping for little or no condensation. Looks like I'm going to get condensation either way. When you have the hooped bivvi door open a bit, do you still get condensation? Thanks Dan. Paul
