Tesla Model X is both longer and wider, just ab. The boxy design makes this look bigger though. Don’t think many Model X drivers say it’s too big for Irish roads so should be okay. Volvo EX90 EV will be slightly shorter but more expensive entry cost.

Like the colour/finish but this is everything that is wrong with the current penchant for SUVs merging with manufacturers producing insanely large/premium EVs. It's got the aerodynamics and weight of a shipping container and it's not particularly efficient. How much CO2 is baked into those whopping batteries and how long will it take to become carbon neutral? To justify this, you'd have to be carting your full 6-person family regularly 300km+ trips using b-roads (to have some sort of efficiency) that were big enough to be suitable to its dimensions. You could build 3 smaller, much more efficient city cars with the battery in this and it would be far more logical but, sadly, it's not the world we live in today. Mazda were onto something with the MX-30 in that regard, I think, but efficiency, packaging and those impractical freestyle/suicide doors let it down. Hauling all the weight and bulk of this EV9 around just to bring Jimmy and Josey the 1.5kms to school and back 5 days a week would be madness ... and yet I'm sure we'll see that. For those with more money than sense imo! Please God may I never meet one on the older narrow streets of Cork, on the narrow sections of Slea Head or on the Conor Pass.

I don't personally think smaller EVs need a battery such as the one in the EV9. Added weight and all that. What we do need is more choice particularly in the smaller car segment. Just as people have no issue paying 60K for a Skoda Kodiaq, people will buy this too. Seems to be a lot of interest in the 6 seater version also which would suggest it's not even about the seats. I would be confident saying that some people would be nervous driving a car of its dimensions.

Great review, obviously a big machine but dimensions are very close to the Q7 from 2015 onward. Maybe it looks bigger as it’s more slab sided. Gloss black body cladding will be wrecked in Ireland with overgrown hedges, briars etc. Horsey set will be looking for towing capacity. 200bhp Earth model sounds underpowered compared to similar large ICE SUV’s but the instant torque from an EV might make it work. 378bhp on the GT-Line is questionably too much unless it’s got impressive brakes.

    Nice review as always.
Advice to any potential buyers of new cars. Buy a new car that had its Euro NCAP safety tests done prior to May 2022, in which case you get to drive your new car, paid for with your hard earned cash, without the car assaulting you with a never ending series of beeps and bongs.

Mark. Yes excellent review.... but you know what is coming... ''Earth'' model? Kia is taking the proverbial! The size of a house! Heavy as hell. Ugly as sin! Why? Just why? Aimed at the USA '[pretend] eco tech market. In Ireland and UK with our roads! No farmer on his John Deere will give you a second thought on the school run. And who could blame them! You are in the ditch! Thanks Mark.... as always.

Why did you feel the need to use the brakes when heading into corners during your test drive? It is a Kia which has excellent regenerative braking (just like it's sister companies of Hyundai and Genesis). I'm driving a heavy Hyundai EV (Ionic 5 AWD) and rarely use the brakes .... You have five levels if regeneration available to you using the flappy paddles ... aids in improving efficiency by adding some electricity back to the battery.

Another good review. However the size of the boot is very small in comparison to the overall size of the vehicle. Presumably those buying this EV have a requirement for 6/7 seats a lot of the time, otherwise why buy it, but only 330 litres of boot space? Additionally the cost of this EV puts it up against very stiff competition, including vehicles from Audi and BMW, which it does not appear to be on a par with. Agree with your other contributor this car is designed for the US market and not for Europe. Your point about safety feature and cameras monitoring you in the car are well made. However car manufacturers are not listening to customers and keep putting more and more screens in cars which force you to take your eyes off the road frequently. There has to be a balancing point between screens and buttons which will provide an optimal safety solution while driving. Finally given the increasing costs of KIA cars I don’t think it can call itself a budget brand anymore.

    • @NobbyOnCars
      @NobbyOnCars  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Not for this vehicle they can’t call themselves budget but they’re committed to many different sizes / models over the future

    • @obk1404

It is no where near current BMW pricing. A new 30d x5 starts from 130k and that is before you spec 7 seat option. 50e is cheaper at about 100k but not possible in 7 seater as batteries take space where 3rd row should have gone.

Hi Nobby, thanks for emphasising the size and weight of this monstrosity. It is already bad enough with all the SUVs around, just see around in a Tesco parking lot, people are unable to do a simple reverse parking, the oversized lorries are all over the place. This size and weight is just plain dangerous, not even mentioning the wastefulness of this.
I'm curious to see how you'll feel driving this in narrow rural roads. I definitely don't want to see any of this coming at me, let's just leave it for Murica.

Great review. Price is very steep, but the premium quality will be much closer to that of a premium 'badge' than most will assume. There will be things that give the 'gap' game away though, like the upgraded sound system. I bet it's weak as. Huge car though for British roads. Just can't see it being a huge hit for that reason and the price tag.

Great detailed review Mark. Every question people would have has been covered in this review. The car is too big, too expensive for the Irish market. Why are manufacturers over specc-ing cars with every gizmo possible and thus pushing prices into the stratosphere? I know some are required for "safety" (which imo, are annoyingly distracting!), but the more gadgets you put in a lump of metal that is being bounced and banged all over our potholed roads, the more things will eventually start breaking from constant vibration. What I think most people want are smaller and cheaper cars, like the proposed Citroen EC3, circa €23k.

Easy to be damaged in any simple accident. And of course they will only be available at the dealer for god knows how many thousands of dollars a piece.
Of course, your insurance will pay, but who's premium will go up like crazy for just a headlight.
There is no need for headlights to be on the corner of the car and have all those lines spreading across the car except be anti consumer.
