Short Story from a true game lover: When I was 5 my house burned to the ground. We had NOTHING left. My Grandfather got me a PS1 (was new at the time & simply called the Sony Playstation, I'm talking an OG 1996, square body, eggshell white build) And I got donated a copy of the Original Air Combat as well as a few other classics such as Spiro & Crash Bandicoot. Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War was my favorite of the series. The story was great and the music amazing. Definitely a classic from the ps2 era. It came with the preorder for AC7, and I marathoned it before even starting AC7.
As a kid i would sit in the living room for hours listening to post grunge grinding to beat ace combat 4 and the story was freaking amazing and slammed you right in the feels. best thing ever.
Glad you understand why, even though it's relatively small, the Ace Combat community is extremely loyal. If you're going to play the other games, I'd recommend the "Holy Trinity" with 4, 5, and Zero on the PS2. 4 goes through the events of the last war with Eurusia, 5 is about the last war involving Osea, and Zero is a prequel to 5 and involves the Belkans. You'll notice that the planes feel more agile and lighter, so dogfighting can get really intense, especially with Zero. Also, more planes in general in each than in 7.
I hope they rerelease/remaster those games for the ps4 tbh, cbf to go hunt down a ps2, my copy came with 5 for the ps4 though and I love it, especially the arcade mode.
As a fan who's played other Ace Combat games, it's a nice return to form after Assault Horizon. One thing I wish they kept with the campaign mode is having some type of control with your squadron, like picking their planes or being able to command them on missions. The multiplayer is really fun and you earn nicknames for doing things, even from the campaign that you use in multiplayer.
@@AA21711 Thanks for the reply bro, that's a pretty old comment! I'm realizing that I've aged a lot in 3 years after seeing my last comment and barely being able to understand it, haha. I was probably just super sleep deprived at the time.
This might be a little late. I’m looking at ace combat games. Never played it before and I want to be a pilot when I grow up. What game is best for ps4? Are there any better games instead of ace combat? Just looking for something fun and what you mentioned here is very interesting.
I appreciate the honest review. Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies arguably has one of the best stories. It took me until I was an adult to actually comprehend who the protagonist was in relation to who I was as the pilot.
Arguably the best story of all the Ace Combat games. Don’t get me wrong, 5 and Zero were good, but storytelling of 4 was just flawless compared to the rest. Remains one of my favorite video game stories because of how real and captivating it felt.
I'm lucky to have a PS2 and i got Ace Combat Zero a few months ago (After loving 4 and 5 for years) and i thought they could not make a better weapon for a plane than the Falken's lazer.... I get the Morgan then everything blew up and i was found wrong.
Ace Combat 4 holds the most nostalgic value for me since it was the first game in the series that I played as a kid. It's still a really great game, and AC5 really ups the anti in a number of areas. Most notably in its storytelling. As far as AC7 is concerned, I'll have to see where it ranks for me personally after giving it a little more time to stew. That said, I absolutely loved this game and it's definitely going on my best of the year list.
AC4 was my first entry into the series. But when looking at the AC7 game, i was almost a little disappointed seeing that the interface was essentially unchanged (though fabulous graphics of course), so to me, was almost an 'already seen this' type of feeling.
I had Ace Combat 4 as a little kid on PS2...I sucked. Think I'll pick this up and give it a try. I'm not big on flying airplanes in games (I generally can't play them very well) but I'm open to give it another try. PS Hopefully, I won't have my curse carry over from Battlefield. Whenever I spawn in a flight based vehicle I immediately hear beep beep beep (or in the case of BF1 we just blow up). Here's to hoping I'm not as bad at this game.
It's a really good game. Been playing the series since AC4 and all of these games have a great story. First few missions should be forgiving for a new player. After a while it does get a little difficult.
It's worth trying out. When I first played AC 5 as a kid I sucked balls at it, but after many failed attempts I learned and got pretty good. Now flight sims are one of my favorite genres in gaming.
4 was my first, which is probably why I love it the most. And while I remember being pretty good with it, I was for the longest time stuck on the last mission. Suffice to say, I would have been pretty useless on both attacks on the Death Star.
Thank you for giving an honest review to a series you know little about. Im a HARDCORE fan of this series (Ace combat 4 is the game that made me a gamer) and after putting nostalgia aside this title TRULY holds up to the glory of the older ones. It has a 20 mission campaign, great soundtrack, plenty of callbacks to previous titles, and enough improvements to truly be a next-gen entry for the series. As a player of AC Infinity though, I was honestly hoping for a little bit more in the multiplayer. Everything they had in infinity was so much fun, and would be fairly easy to implement into their current system. I have high hopes for the future though, Im sure they want to release content updates and more as time goes on.
Late as hell to the party here, but Ace Combat 4 stands out as the #1 game in the series for me. The story is great and compelling despite being told through (excellently drawn) pan-across shots of stills. And the opening animation where you're being launched off a carrier in a F4-Phantom-II was beautiful in an era where polygons were still all the rage. Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies was the true beginning of the series as we know it today. Excellent detail, tons of radio chatter, compelling story, and killer soundtrack. You can't ask for more. All that said, The Liberation of Gracemeria for the oft-derided AC-6 is still the best Ace Combat song ever written.
The jet head for the thumbnail is awesome! Ahahaha cheers, keep up the great videos. For a long time, these videos help me decide on games. Especially with today's games being all too often unfinished on release. Thank you.
If anyone is looking at this game during black friday sales i have a pro tip that has made the game insanely more fun. Make a playlist of songs like “free bird “, “holding out for a hero” and stuff like that, destroying whole enemy regiments in a A10 Warthog while listening to free bird is now one of my favorite passtimes.
Every mission In the campaign is super immersive. Like sometimes you will won’t really know what the hell your reason for doing this is and you will catch a convo between two pilots that just sucks you right back into the action
The game’s dynamic has changed a lot from the previous games but one thing that I like the most is that there are various times when the characters referenced locations, situations, and even other characters from previous games and it’s great. Definitely a game worth playing
my eyes almost popped out of my head when i seen ACE COMBAT. I think the last time i played was on PSP when i was in high school (2008or9). always loved ace combat, hope it's for pc!

@@SoloBoardGamingKnight Yeah, the game doesn't do enough to teach you G-force turn, which is actually necessary to dodge the missiles. Regarding weapons, PLSL is the answer to all your problems :D Ground targets, airborne targets, nothing survives PLSL. Enjoy!
If you're new (ik this is far from release) Make sure to learn post-stall maneuvers. Change speed to knots and below 500 press the brake/accel + pull up nose all at once to flip your plane 180. It takes some practice and I recommend looking up a video to see how it is done. Good luck Aces
Shattered skies indeed.. It was a huge favorite of mine.. But story wise.. Not saying that shattered skies isnt the GOAT.. Becuase it is. Unsung war really took it there story wise
Chopper.. That was ruff lol.. Nah i feel you tho.. Meagalith on shattered skies was probobly one of the best orchestrated last missions of all time.. And that music.. Remember that music?
Air Combat was brilliant when it first came out, as was Ace Combat 2, that never made sense to me at the time but in hindsight knowing that the first game was called Ace Combat in Japan it totally makes sense, it's been much too long since I last played any flight games.
Ace Combat Zero or as it was called here Ace Combat: The Belkan War is one of my fondest chidhood memories growing up. I just loved playing it as a kid. My mates would come round and wed dogfight through all the different maps while some times actually playing highway to the danger zone ahaha. So good.
I enjoy the campaign, but the VR, oh boy this baby is meant to be played on the VR. I really feel like a TopGun pilot, looking at my target by turning my head instead of rotating the left analog stick, give me superb visibility and freedom to do menuever and feel scared and excited doing that. I just wish we get to play the entire campaign on VR. It's hard yes, I wish Ace Combat and VR have a future. Multiplayer, I like it....Enjoy the PvP. But PvP is not my kind of multiplayer. I hope for coop. Ace Combat 7 is now my new best Ace Combat game, I like to see how Ace Combat 5 Unsung War.
I HATE CABBAGE Thats what DCS is for. For me Acecombat satisfies my fix to feel like being an Ace pilot while DCS satisfies my fix to feel like an actual pilot. A lot of people from the DCS community actually are hardcore acecombat fans and they sometimes recreate some acecombat missions in DCS.
@@GTChucker86 I tried DCS, problem is the rig can run it but the game crash constantly and is virtually unplayable. I bought the MIG 21 package but till now I gave up trying to get the game running. What i love the most about Ace Combat is the goddamn story. Ace4 was my first game in the series. God, what a beautiful game, the story was epic, as well as all the missions
I’m 32 and the old ass Ace Combat games are the reason I play inverted now. Played the hell out of it and it molded my young brain into playing every shooter and every game inverted
@A Ace 4 has a nostalgia buff for me. Ace Combat as a whole has some indept lore and story. Is 7 better? Graphically yeah. Dose it have more options? Sure it dose. But the story, is what makes every game special. And I love 4s story.
I finished this game and I 100% agree with you. The story is super engaging as you said and it’s just a fun game to play overall. I’m really glad the progression system works very well and you get a fair amount of MRP which is basically the currency to buy planes for those who don’t know. And you still get a decent amount of mrp for replaying missions. This game is great
TBH. I have played all the ace combats. Ace combat 04 was my first video game I ever played. I am deeply in love with the OG storyline. For those that dont know: Ace combat takes place in a world much like ours, but the continents are jumbled up. This world is called Strangereal. In this world, meteors rain down from the sky quite often. For this reason, super weapons were built to target the meteors. But whenever war breaks out, they are turned onto humanity. Typically, the only way to destroy these weapons is with the help of the romanticized aces of the skies. The world building is incredible in this series. The lore is very very deep and exciting. AND As this video states, the production quality is very high in every aspect for a genre that rarely exists anywhere else. It it a true original series that you cant get anywhere else. RECCOMENDED ORDER: ACE COMBAT 04, 05, ZERO, 06, 07. Ace combat ZERO is a bit of a hard one to get around your head because it goes back in time in a separate country, but it helps build the intercontinental relationships of Strangereal. I highly recommend to anyone of any age group. 04 and 05 have seriously high replayability... much more than 07. Mobius one... OUT
Matt Chilton 👍🤘 It drives me crazy how people can’t tell the difference between Ace 04 to Ace 05 ! I started with 04 anyway but trying them all , it is The Best so far Not just because of nostalgia , but Feeling like A Pilot !! From the Introduction too the Craft , too the Sfx , Flight characteristics of each plane , Music and of course Story ! Hopefully they’ll realize that That Was What Ace combat should be striving too be ?!
For a first timer you got everything right on the money. I'm happy you liked it and I hope more people support the genre. In my opinion ace combat zero was the most intense from a gameplay an story telling aspect... It makes you feel like a legendary ace pilot all the way to the last mission. If your gonna start anywhere start there.
Started playing this game about a week ago and I've always seen it in the xbox ultimate section but I started researching the modern for the USA and I downloaded the game....love it
My age maybe showing but.... I remember get a demo disk many many years ago for my grey playstation with ace combat on it. Man that was so long ago. Yet AC7 still felt like it was made to the standards you'd expect from games back in the day.
Justin Hamblen it has the “feel” of games back when they were challenging! I remember when I bought Zone of the Enders just for the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo disc! Those were the days!
I have a little more than 50 hours in ace combat 7 and I am still absolutely in love with the game and can't get enough of it! The story is so immersive with the characters and I loved 4, 5, and 6. 6 being my absolute favorite. There are a few irritating things about 7 that I don't want to get in to but I love it.
ace combat 3 was my first play to love ace combat series, and this is the reason why i love aircraft. just can't stop playing ace combat assault horizon while waiting for this
The game is around 10 euros now in the ps store. I guess I'm gonna buy it. I remember playing Ace Combat a lot, not sure if It was on PSX or PS2, but I think that game is the reason I'm still playing everything with inverted vertical controls.
I played this on gamepass first time I ever tried this type of game and man I was blown away with the quality gameplay. Man I'm hooked! I played on easy first to get to grips with it but quickly restarted on harder mode . Its gems like this that gamepass brings to the table for people unwilling to take a €70 hit on something they may not like . Happy gaming chaps
3:01 Newcomer huh? That target leading was superb for an airman. I'm really surprised that, you as a new player, got connected to your aircraft so quickly.
DUDE ace combat 5 back in the ps2 days was amazing. my dad actually got the throttle and joystick set up for it and he actually played through the whole game too. the story in 5 was amazing

Im sorry, is everyone going to ignore 5:19! Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War was my favorite of the series. The story was great and the music amazing. Definitely a classic from the ps2 era. It came with the preorder for AC7, and I marathoned it before even starting AC7.
what!! i didnt know that ahw missed opportunity :/
Yeah unsung war was amazing. I sunk many hours in as a kid on the ps2.
As a kid i would sit in the living room for hours listening to post grunge grinding to beat ace combat 4 and the story was freaking amazing and slammed you right in the feels. best thing ever.

I love how in 4 your objective is destroy stonehenge but in 7 you protect it
Great memories 🤧
Love it
Glad you understand why, even though it's relatively small, the Ace Combat community is extremely loyal.
X is also pretty good
@@Blupl1776 Yep, X has hands down the most variable campaign in the series, rivaled only by jp version of Electrosphere

I appreciate the honest review. Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies arguably has one of the best stories. It took me until I was an adult to actually comprehend who the protagonist was in relation to who I was as the pilot.
I remember playing that as a kid and being obsessed
Arguably the best story of all the Ace Combat games. Don’t get me wrong, 5 and Zero were good, but storytelling of 4 was just flawless compared to the rest. Remains one of my favorite video game stories because of how real and captivating it felt.

I'm a longtime fan of Ace Combat and am loving AC7.
Ace Combat 5 is probably my favorite.
Hamilton, you bastard!!! Lmao
I had Ace Combat 4 as a little kid on PS2...I sucked. Think I'll pick this up and give it a try. I'm not big on flying airplanes in games (I generally can't play them very well) but I'm open to give it another try.
PS
Hopefully, I won't have my curse carry over from Battlefield.
As a kid, i start playing the first ace combat release, all i can do is go highest in the sky or crash on the ground
teddies1992 the last few missions I’d say are a little more than difficult for new comers especially is they aren’t using expert controls

So good.

For those that dont know:
Ace combat takes place in a world much like ours, but the continents are jumbled up.
OUT
