Last time I grew my hair out was to try out the man bun undercut. It was an easy goal since it didn't require that much commitment to grow to the "bun length". I always kept my hair short, so it was intriguing to see what would happen. I didn't know about proper hair care though, so I washed my hair every day, conditioned it too and used unnecessary products to style it. When I reached that "bun length", I was losing hair like crazy. One pass though it with a comb and there was tons of hair, and I also noticed it started thinking on my head too. So I cut it with size 1 again. Not long after I started wondering what long hair would be like again, so I started researching, and your videos helped me a lot. I started washing twice a week, sometimes once (depends on how dirty it gets because of gym, job etc.), started using higher quality shampoo, conditioner and coconut oil. So far I'm 5 months in and it looks so much better than last time (also because I left out the undercut, so far I'm letting it all grow), I see much less hair in my combs and it feels good too.
So I just wanted to say thank you, your videos motivated me to keep with it and dedicate some time to learn about myself and my hair.

    • @kingscy9

@@djswirleyI have a similar issue with hair falling out. Perhaps it looks like you're losing more hair because said hair is longer so when bunching it, it forms a bigger ball than if you bunched the same number of hair's cut short.

Not complaining (because I have a full head of hair at 55), but not really sure what a realistic expectation should be as I'm going/growing through this COVID period. My hair hasn't been this long since before I joined the US Army in 1983. I'm still in that awkward-growth-length phase. ty

So, I used to wash my hair pretty much everyday for my entire life (I'm now 27) because nobody ever told me that that is not how you're supposed to wash when you're in the shower. I used to have nice, smooth, pretty straight hair which would fall down the sides of my head. Now, however, my hair is extremely frizzy, especially in humid conditions. I reckon I have type 2c low-porosity hair from the information I've gathered.
Now, I started growing out my hair almost a year ago and I have about 7 inches worth of hair on my head, wavy towards the roots and more curly towards the ends. Until recently I never really paid much attention to hair care, but I figured maybe I can ake it easier to manage if I use the right products and the right routine.
At the moment, after doing a fair bit of research and some converesations with hairdresser's, I currently shampoo once a week, usually in the evening after some kind of sport activity. I use conditioner in the shower every day, either pureology for damaged hair or l'oreal coconut extraordinary oil mask. I dab my hair a bit and add in a home made salt spray, then towel dry my hair a bit paying attention to not scrub, and just dab and scrunch. Then I add a smidge of 100% natural coconut oil from the supermarket and use my fingers to spread through from root to end. Sometimes I use a boar bristle brush but I've heard it may damage my hair, especially when damp. Then I just let it air dry. I think I'm getting fairly decent results but still my hair tends to kind of just sit there and not fall down the sides, and I reckon I could still improve y routine somewhat.
    Any tips?

This is awesome. So easy to over-complicate hair-care with even 1 uncommon option (like dyeing/lightening - way too many steps in addition to regular ones). And the more you damage or customize your hair, that much harder it gets to manage it. Here's some useful general hair-care information, in addition to this video's:
    - Straight/wavy: coconut oil is awesome, and generally cheap. You can have a shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask with it (untested). 3 times the protection (giggity). You can even cook with it (assuming it's coconut oil ONLY, not a hair-care product with it included)!
    - Any type: wash less often (as reviewed in this video). Regardless of hair type, don't make any extreme/sudden changes (except healthy ones, like better ingredients), to allow your body to adjust to them.
    - Any type: still want to shower everyday, but not ruin your hair? Use some sort of shower cap. Not sure, but there are specific hairsprays/products for those who sweat/produce too much scalp/hair oil - which you could use under the shower cap (as per instructions).
    - Fine/high-porosity: use coconut oil-based leave-in conditioner (as per bottle's and video's instructions).
    - Use a silk or silk-like pillowcase. It helps keep hair shaped smoothly and optimal. They're cheap on Amazon.

I like fresh smelling hair. I can't imagine waiting 2 or 3 days to wash it. I also don't want to drag dirt and pollen and smells my hair absorbs and oil onto my pillow. That's a great way to aggrevate your allergies and any skin conditions - especially acne and blackheads. Also, most partners will appreciate a daily wash and clean smelling hair. This no wash thing seems to be a weird fad.
My hair is semi coarse and wavy and oily at the scalp. I use a gentle shampoo. I massage the shampoo into the scalp to clean and stimulate it but I stay away from the ends and just let the shampoo rinse out through them. Then i put a natural conditioner with coconut and other oils on the ends and allow it to penetrate for a minute before rinsing. It seems to work for me. And I get zero tangles and no breaking. I also sometimes rinse with cold water. It's good for your skin too.
This guy has fine hair so he has to baby it. His routine apparently works for him since his hair always looks nice and he clearly works hard at it. And it helps to be handsome. Lol It's important to tune your hair care routine to your hair and scalp and lifestyle and health considerations (and significant other). There's no one size fits all.
I hate to say it, but the best thing to do across the board is stay away from the blow dryer. It damages your hair at any setting except cold and then what's the point. I let mine air dry. Then just as it's almost dry, i gently brush it against the style. Then 10-15 minutes later gradually brush it back into my final style. That gives it volume and shape. It's easy. It just takes an hour.

Hello, Trav. I'm 25y old female. I ve highly porous, dry, thin, brittle, wavy hair. My scalp is very dry as well and I ve tiny-particle dandruff. I used to color my hair as well, since I have premature graying (14y). For two years I performed massaging my scalp with fingertips every day, shampooing and conditioning with ogx products, applying castor oil and black seed oil masks. After such a routine, my hair quality was tolerable and I was able to comb my hair. But then, I moved to another country and stopped performing all of this. I had to cut my hair very short. Why is it so difficult to get long healthy hair? Its so time and money consuming to get normal hair.

I have grown my hair for 2.5 years, in that time I've had no cuts and wash it about once every 10 days. I'm impeccably clean, I used to wash my hair at least alternate days when it was short, but my hair now stays clean and oil free for days. Even on the day I wash it it isn't greasy.

I'm an every day washer, basically because I sweat a lot. I have type 1 and 2a, fine, dense, with high porosity, oily scalp and dry ends. How do I keep my hair fresh and smelling good, on the days I don't wash? And how do I keep it from getting all over the place while sleeping (I twist and turn a lot).
