How To BALANCE Protein & Moisture for Strong & Healthy Hair

  • Does your hair have a balance of protein & moisture? Do you want strong, shiny, healthy, hair? You need to balance your protein and moisture. If you don't have enough of one or the other, your hair will be dry (needs moisture) or weak (needs protein).
If you want to know how to find out which one you need. You need to do the hair elasticity test, which I explain in this video.
The secret to strong & healthy hair is having a perfect balance of both protein and moisture. But how do you do that? And how do you know which one you need?

I'm really appreciating your videos... even though I'm a girl 🤣 They are thorough and first time that I am finally starting to understand my hair frustrations. I have fine, wavy, post-chemo, frizzy, crazy hair. I have straightened the life out of it for years... plus it's coloured. I have just ordered the recommended shea moisture protein set and the living proof frizz set as I now know that it is moisture overload, instead of feeding the beast. I think right now I have high porosity, fine and low density hair. How long can I expect balance and what would be a good set to get for balanced hair.... it also freaks out with coconut rich products.

Wow. You saved my hair in one night! I was always confused about the concept of Protein, Moisture, and Porosity, but you explained it so simply and thoroughly.
I was frustrated that my hair would still be poofy and frizzy even after using moisturizing products, but now I noticed that I literally have no protein in my hair products, so I over moisturize my hair. And I thought putting water on it every day would help 😅
After using a shampoo and conditioner with protein, and doing with my regular moisturizing wavy hair routine, it looks so much better. Thank you for this video.

According to this video, i have a good balance. Because when i stretch my hair strand, it stretches and then just bounces back. It doesn't break or anything. But my hair is still pretty dry which sucks. I am also medium porosity. Honestly no matter how much i read or watch about this, i still don't understand. Because it's explained differently everytime :D

68 years old, fine dense 2c white hair to my waist. To keep my high porosity hair in check (non full washing, conditioning days), before I brush/comb my hair I split it in two and dampen the bottom half with a fine mister. I then treat each damp half with 2 drops argan oil, 2 drops grape seed oil, and two drops hyaluronic acid, which I rub together in the palms of my hand, work into hair, and comb/brush. I let it dry into its natural waves, and it is good for the day.

After growing out my hair a few years ago, it was noticeably very frizzy, tried everything, best I found was Redken Frizz Dismiss line, but what a pain so many products to get only a barely satisfactory result. So I finally tried a full Keratin treatment, what an incredible difference. Its not for everyone, but now I just get up and go.... comb/brush no need for styling products, wash it twice a week. Truly life changing.... Just an fyi... for those who are debating trying it.... one important note, your hair is much straighter afterwards... no more poorly formed curves and crazy waves (never could achieve decent curls or waves anyway

Firstly thank you for all the concise well presented information your channel has to offer Kudos to you good sir.
I find myself here after 4 years of hair grow out, strangely not due to a hair length goal or anything though. I just got tired of going to the barbers and caring about how my hair looked and before i know it a year had passed and that "awkward stage" was well an truly over (bless up my beanie hats).
Now my hair is down to my waist and not in the best of shapes as this whole time I've pretty much neglected it with the "tie it up and forget about it" approach. Sure i wash it but there is no routine i stick too at all save trimming an inch off the ends when i find myself sitting on it (gotta say this hurts when it happens).
Think it's about time to take better care of my locks, thank you again for pointing me in the right directions.

Brahh! I have been watching a bunch of your videos for my INFO on these hair stuff and in all of them I found at least 4 voice cracks! I used to have this problem a few years ago and I kinda figured a simple solution for it!
The reason number 1 could be your water temperature! I used to drink very cold waters and that caused me voice cracks like hell!
The reason number 2 could be this that you are not drinking enough water when you are speaking for a long time!
Next time have a glass of water behind the camera and every 4 to 5 minuets have a drink.
Hope that helps! thanks for the video..thumbs up

    • @Milkiestrawberri
      @Milkiestrawberri 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

apple cider balances the ph in your hair and gently cleanses it. some people would rinse their hair with acv instead of shampoo especially those who do (the no poo method) if I'm correct.
Coconut oil is good for moisture but if not used properly it can cause hairfall..
I'm not an expert though. it's just what i find.. it's a fact for the acv..

I specifically really like how you're so science based! One concern/question I do have though, that I'd love to see you do a video on, is who is funding these studies? If, for example, Neutrogena donated 90% of the funds for a particular study, and they came to a conclusion that seems to support neutrogena products, that might be a bias worth reporting on. I think it would be really cool for you to do a video on the legitimacy of grooming science as it relates to the funding of those studies. Thanks so much for the content dude, can't wait for the next video! :D

Solution is cheap and simple drugstore products, my hair has never been better when i switched to the Sunsilk shampoo and conditioner, it's like 2 or 3 bucks here in Norway, basically just sulfate and silicone in a bottle but does the trick, it doesn't try to fuck with my hair shaft in any way, and in the long run this has proven to be the best for my hair, i stay away from higher end products as they always contain compounds that fuck with your hair, by the time our hair comes our of our scalp that's the hair you have until it sheds. I would honestly recommend people to ditch expensive saloon products for drugstore stuff, pretty much everyone i know that have amazing hair only use cheap stuff, that just leave your hair alone.

Hey just to let you know I wouldn't trust that study about sulfates. Both authors are employed by UNICAMP which has a relationship with Natura (a cosmetic manufacturer) as does FAPESP and CNPq, the organizations that funded the study through grants. One of the hair samples used in the experiment was donated directly by Natura Cosméticos S.A. The experiment only compares water to SDS (also known as SLS), but does not include any other sulfates (e.g. SLES) or surfactants. The immersion washes had the samples soaking in solution for over an hour each wash. It's unrealistic to assume your hair is setting for an hour in any surfactant solution. Of the water temperatures chosen, 40C is the absolute max temperature anyone would want their shower temperature to be (roughly 104F) and highly unlikely it's staying that temperature for an hour long shower. They're using the outdated Lowry method to determine protein content. The paper even states "SDS does not damage significantly the cortex, although extracting more proteinaceous materials than water", which suggest most of the damage is probably on the cuticle layer. You're more likely to damage your hair through chemical processes such as bleaching or perming, and through application of heat using hair straighteners and curlers.

Hey @toastloop - I've put out several videos since this one on how I've changed my mind about sulfates. Thanks for calling out the importance of knowing who funded studies though!

WOWWW, I’ve been going in a serious spiral the last few days to figure out my hair type If it’s protein or moisture overload I’ve watched over 100 videos etc etc , came across yours and your PDF for “whats your hair type” just saved me! Thank you, thank you for taking your time to design that for people like me. 🫶🏽🫶🏽

Hello from Australia. Hi Trav. I have been using kerastase for 15 years. Lately I mixed their ranges and used extra macadamian ranges. I found out that I have protein overloaded hair. I have found Mike video about hair like yourself. I asked him about my problem. At first he asked me what I used . I replied with a big hope that professional hair would save me but no replying until now. I don't think we have hair professional s like in USA. I haven't seen them on you tube.
Anyway, you are the last source would save my life. I have checked hair porosity like you recommended. It broke and dried.
Now could you please please recommend me what shampoo or how to do with overload?
    Heapssss thanksss. Xoxoxo

Big question. I wet my hair in the shower every day. It’s the only way to tame the mess in the morning. I only wash 1 or 2 times a week plus a cowash 1 or 2 times in between. My hair is a frizzy mess in the morning. How do I calm it down with out getting it wet?

I am confused: According to the elasticity test my hait should be perfectly finde, but when it is dry it gets really dry and frizzy. I have curly hair if that helps finding a solution

Can I use argan oil when doing the L.O.C method? Also when doing this method does my hair have to be fully wet to do this or when it's damp (towel dry until damp)?

    • @src3360

      It should be towel dried.
Spray on the liquid of your choice, spray on your oil of choice then apply the cream. Gently comb hair to distribute evenly 🤟🤟🤟

The past 6 months or more I’ve been using Garnier Fructis which says it has “active fruit protein.” I’ve always had pretty fine hair that sheds quite a bit, but recently I’ve started to question if it’s been shedding more then usual. I put my hair in a braided hair style I used to do all the time and even though my hair is even long now the braids felt smaller and less full. I’m starting to worry that maybe I’m experiencing an overload of protein. I’m not really sure what to do or how to be certain.

I have very similar hair to you. My porosity is most likely high, because my hair dries in two hours or so. I started using the ogx protein shampoo and conditioner. Maybe I used too much conditioner, but it left my hair looking insanely flat unlike Aussie miracle volume shampoo/conditioner I was using. I did the elasticity test, and my hair strand broke right away when I started to pull on it. After I shampoo and condition I started putting some coconut oil in my hair. With fine hair would it be better to just apply the oil at the ends so it doesn't feel so weighed down? Also what is the best way to add moisture to my hair? This is my first time growing out my hair, and I need help. Thank you.

do you know the curly girl method? you should do that cause i have a feeling that long hair looks weird on you cause you're taking care of it the wrong way. example combing it when you shouldn't. washing often and such?
      just a guess tho.. goodluck!
