Guido’s mum diary entry was bittersweet. Thank you once again for the gift of Italy every week, I will never look at olive oil the same again, not will I hesitate to pay for good quality oil. Godspeed
Oliveoil is always present in italian cuisine. It's way healthier than other fat. I don't know if in Italy oliveoil is expensive, but in Portugal (my country) it's a bit expensive, even though we produce a lot. Italy, Portugal and Greece produce a great amount of oliveoil. I think Spain and the south of France, too, but I'm not sure.
The ending brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of my grandpa's words in Lebanon. Out of all the crops harvested in the fall, the olive season was the most special. They sang songs, laughed, told jokes, ate and made lots of memories. A lot has been lost. What remains is at the mercy of time.

Ahh finally let go the ladder and got my ☕ 😉 Oh, Kylie, why am I sat here with tears on my cheeks over a film about harvests? Just the testimonies, from young Guido to those wonderful octagenarians who have spent a lifetime tending those groves ( and vines ) .... to watch them fading..... it is too much to bear. Maybe I'm feeling it more on this year when so much feels threatened, so much loss....? The thoughts from Guido's mama were so poignant ♥️ Or maybe it's just that you have a unique and precious talent for capturing the Beauty in every moment; and yes, it is difficult not to over sentimentalise the real and hard lives of people ( you never do). The most enduring art places pleasure and pain side by side and challenges, I laughed at the 🍇pickers' jokes, resolved to be more thoughtful in my purchasing of olive oil and wine, and felt my heart soar at the stunning Tuscan landscape. Then watched it all again. Utter joy. So many thanks 📸😘😘

Thank you, thank you, thank you for opening my senses with your soft voice, Italians, Albanians, Old folks, and a young master. I can taste the olive, the grape. Fantastic.
This was an incredible documentary of the current status with the olive and grape harvests.-so well photographed and edited, and so much information. It is truly sad to lose this art, this passion for the completion of the year's toils, this simpler and more connected life style. It is currently the way everywhere, the young leaving the country for urban opportunity. I have been observing the slow beginnings of the return to the rural connections, the return to the country and agricultural life. I feel anxious that the farms can be saved before too much connection and tradition slips away. I want to be hopeful that these wonderful farms can be saved. It was interesting to hear that both the grape and olive harvests are now 30 days earlier than years ago. Thank you for an incredible video. It was beautiful.
Wow, such a poignant and sad but moving piece of cinema. Guido seemed to have a heavy heart as he spoke of the competition and lack of authenticity that is happening because the world would rather have convenience and mix oils over culture and true olive oil as it once was. His dad's years of knowledge and love for his productions is so heartwarming and the pride that Guido and his family have for their work and livelihood. I would definitely love to spend a long time and help in this ancient tradition. To hear of how it used to be a social event and honest hard work that was shared by many to now not be that anymore is such a terrible and saddening revelation. I enjoy supporting local people and hope that the traditions that his and his family and others who are true to this line of production continue to get the recognition and credit they deserve. Also I loved seeing their dog playing with you all during the filming :) Thank you Kylie, Guido, his family (including the lovely waggling lab) and to the workers of the land Xx

Thank you for another beautiful video. The diary entry at the end was beautiful and sad. My husband and I were fortunate enough to visit Tuscany in October 2018. We visited a family that owned an olive grove and were lucky to bring home fresh olive oil, but it was very sad to hear that how hard they were struggling. I can't even imagine how hard it is to work on an olive grove or in a vineyard, and I don't know if it matters, but I appreciate every one who breaks their backs to produce such beautiful foods and drink that are often far too taken for granted. I hope this video inspires others to appreciate hard work and those who value what they do and what it means to them.

Hi Kylie, I am watching your video, and enjoying it. It is great to hear the conversation you’re having with Guido. He speaks beautiful English. He is A DORABLE! When I was in Italy in 2018 with my brother, we were in Montecatini. As we were driving on the highway through Tuscany, we saw numerous, what I thought was abandoned homes and farms, all along the highway. It was very sad to see that. I can’t wait to go back to Italy! Hey, you two are together a while now, MIGHT he be THE one? 👍😀
Beautifully executed. It speaks the truth and removes some of the romantic perceptions people have about agriculture. I myself have always looked at Olive Oil and Wine as an artistic endeavor and being an artist myself I have a very high regard and respect for these people. My family originated from Trento before they came to the United States. Thanks for exposing the efforts that go into producing these wonderful gifts from the land, and the people who give us these gifts. Great job.

Such a beautiful video! We still make wine ourselves here in the United States, each fall, still gathering together like they did in the old days. This video is especially meaningful as many years ago our family came from Albania to Italy and settled there.
As a student I participated years ago at a ''vendange'' at a small vineyard own by family friends in Provence. There were hired workers and friends and students who all worked together. I remember the lovely meal we all shared at the end. Joyful memories. Kylie, you have a special talent to listen and to capture images of important traditional activities such as the vendemmia and the culture of olive oil. Guido explained so well the difficulties with the commercialization of olive oil in Italy. I always try to purchase oil from local producers rather than from a big company. Farmers and growers have to be encouraged.
Oh how I loved this…… the diary entry at the end from your Mother in Law was incredibly touching as well as true. Thank you for sharing the beauty that is Tuscany
Residing in Maui, Hawaii we happily support local farms, roadside food stands and Farmers Markets. We purchase most fruit and veg, in addition to tea, coffee, macadamia nuts, honey, and more. Have the fondest memories of bartering for local venison, pork, and fish. We learned so much from harvesting Pipinola and Achiote pods with friends and their older relatives. It was extremely difficult to keep up with their speed and stamina! The recipes, stories, and love shared during these times are forever cherished and priceless!
Kyle I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Well done! This touched my heart and brought back special memories of being with my familia during the harvest season. And yes, Guido mother is absolutely correct about the happy times during the harvest and working the land. I am not that old, only in my 50's, but I was raised right and appreciate all the times with my familia and respect for my land. I work hard and enjoy it in the end during the harvest! Again I will say, your boyfriend is gorgeous!!! If he has a brother I would love to meet him! Hahaha! I am single and Portuguese! Well at least part, also part Swedish! Thank you for the lovely video!♥️
A touching and absolutely beautiful documentary. It saddens and scares me to think of what will happen when the old farmers die out. Guido did not say if 'bitterness' is also a characteristic of a quality oil; I have always equated bitterness with a high antioxidant content? P.S. the black and white pics are heart-wrenching and fabulous. Felt like I missed out on some great times. And Guido's mother is a hell of a good writer -- a poignant, glorious and poetic piece of diary.

This was a stunning reminder of this. We take so much for granted.♥️ thank you Kylie for your effort to show so may different facets of this life🙏🏻
Hi HH, fully concur with your observation of how changes have disturbed the rhythm found in our early lives. Now 88, I too am sad at the decay in quality of life and the future ahead for my kids & grandkids!
Thankyou Kylie that was beautiful to watch. I love Olive groves and vineyards and it seems like the harvests used to be a huge celebration and rewards for their hard work. Just like fruit picking in Australia most of the work is now done by travellers and many locals would not have the stamina or will to do the work for a megr wage. There must be a way or incentives to entice young people back to this work.
I've waited for this episode for the last couple of weeks and I just want to thank you for taking us through the process and more importantly interviewing and talking with the locals. I fear this ancient tradition will be lost if we and our youth don't become involved and help keep it alive. Hotel desk said the the Galleria dell' Accademia opened at 8, 4 blocks away & cost 1,000 lire (US$ 1.50!).each! She grabbed my hand while we strolled slowly as the masterpiece came majestically in view! We both were sobbing uncontrollably to honor Michaelangelo, at 25 years, creating this gem from a piece of spoiled marble by a hack!! ps: Wife Joy lived another 52 years and we BOTH revisited our memories at least a few times a year during that span of time!! better than anything on tv now and better than a lot of other TH-cam channels :)
I live on a small island off the coast of maine. I heard my grandparents speak of the "old days' and how everything is different now. My parents time was different than for my grandparents, and I hear them speak of the old days when things were better. I grew up in a time that seemed simpler and quieter than it seems today. I have yet to bemoan of the past. The one thing I have learned in the life is that the only constant is change. One day, people will look back at this present moment and call it the "good ole days". Thank you for the lesson in grape and olive harvest in your part of the world. Your beauty and grace always makes what is viewed just that much better. All I can offer you is to enjoy this beautiful moment, feel the aliveness of this now. The world is a beautiful flow of love and passion. Thank you for sharing yours :)

Yes, Charles, Kylie is truly a blessing to us all. Especially in these difficult times, her indomitable and positive, passionate spirit, which comes shining through her words and images like the Tuscan sun spreading its luminous rays on a summer's day, is a powerful elixir of life and joy for those who are feeling downtrodden and oppressed in their circumstance.

An island off Maine sounds pretty marvellous and romantic in its way.
@@jeanbb3283 Been windy and cold the last days, didnt get above freezing yesterday. The wind off the water can be so cold. There is a saying in these parts, " If you cant stand our winters, you dont deserve our summers". I was born here, grew up here, so I am used to it ( Island life ). It is not for everyone. It sounds romantic, and it can be romantic. And it can be like living in a fishbowl with 350 other fish. Everyone knows everyone's parents and grandparents. haha, wow, where did that come from ?
The diary reading part is very touching.
" No more the echo of laughter,
suntanned smiling faces and the flash of
coloured headscarves at harvest."
So beautiful. So interesting. So sad. The last bit of this had me bawling like a baby. I am still hopeful that the tides will turn soon and there will be a return to Mother Earth. Hope that those who work with their hands will be revered, respected and well paid. Jobs cannot be “stolen” if the local people do not want them. I will always be an optimist and appreciate the simple, yet grand things in life. Made with love, perspiration and integrity. My next sip and taste of these gifts will be exquisite. Thank you Kylie for giving us an informative, nostalgic and futuristic insight. ✌🏻❤️🍇🍷🥖🧆
Here in WA State, USA. We are returning to the land in droves. Some due to covid, many list jobs, but also a renewed sense in being one with your land no matter size of your lot. It is so wonderful to see. I pray this also happens in Italy.
There are not enough of words in English or Italian to show my gratitude for this video. So lovely presented. I will never take for granted the purchase or use of olive oil and wine. Both being good for the soul and the heart. Thank you Kylie for sharing a wonderful moment with the world.

The thoughts from Guido's mama were so poignant ♥️
Or maybe it's just that you have a unique and precious talent for capturing the Beauty in every moment; and yes, it is difficult not to over sentimentalise the real and hard lives of people ( you never do). The most enduring art places pleasure and pain side by side and challenges, I laughed at the 🍇pickers' jokes, resolved to be more thoughtful in my purchasing of olive oil and wine, and felt my heart soar at the stunning Tuscan landscape. Then watched it all again. Utter joy. So many thanks 📸😘😘

you're so brave going up and talking to the strangers! its beautiful
Also I loved seeing their dog playing with you all during the filming :)

❤❤❤ Can you please share the address of this place. I would like to visit and taste the fresh oilve oil and by few bottles from this farm.

Love, love, love this! I bet that olive oil tasted amazing. I’ve also never seen how people work out in the vineyards before picking and harvesting grapes so that was a real treat to watch too!
I follow Nikki Positano. That was one of my dreams when I went to Italy in 1978, was to go to Positano. It didn’t happen. I’m praying I’ll be able to go there next year.
Hey, you two are together a while now, MIGHT he be THE one?

Beautifully executed. It speaks the truth and removes some of the romantic perceptions people have about agriculture. I myself have always looked at Olive Oil and Wine as an artistic endeavor and being an artist myself I have a very high regard and respect for these people. My family originated from Trento before they came to the United States. Thanks for exposing the efforts that go into producing these wonderful gifts from the land, and the people who give us these gifts. Great job.

The recipes, stories, and love shared during these times are forever cherished and priceless!

with industrialization and modernism we have lost the desire to attune to the tender rhythms of the earth.. we prefer the easy way nowadays.
I have a big terrace where I do gardening, the day I bought one olive tree I felt rich, a strange feeling that I can not explain, is something ancestral for us, Mediterranean people. Interesting and informative. Is there a way to purchase the families olive oil? I would love to support them and enjoy good olive oil.
I was just about to ask!
Yes I think many of us feel that way and I would be happy to pay whatever they need to make it worthwhile.
It would be great to figure out a direct sales channel, and basically a small pop-up processing plant that fits into a semi truck so that farms like this can avoid the middle man, show provenance, and make the lion's share of the profit.
Same for me! My Nonna + Nonno were Italian farmers, so I truly appreciate these precious people and the gifts they produce from their land for the rest of us! Please count me in if there is way to buy their products and support their work!
