LIFE IN A HISTORIC COUNTRY FARMHOUSE IN TUSCANY, ITALY (Renovating A Ruin Part 3)

  • Buongiorno! This episode I interview the caretaker of the farm where we're renovating the chicken coop and turning it into a little rustic one-bedroom apartment. Egisto has lived on this hill in Tuscany for 81 years and has much to teach me about the history of the farm and the old-fashioned way of life in the countryside in Italy. Spring is almost here so I tried to film the flowering trees and plants that are now in bloom. I believe it is respectful to think about a place's history before starting a renovation or construction project so this is a little tribute to the bygone era and the dolce vita that is slowly disappearing from villas and country farmhouses across Italy. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

    Thank you so much for watching. The music in the intro is ‘Fantastica’ from 1958 performed by Nicola Arigliano. While I know many people love the ‘renovation’ part, I also want to create a community here who believe in researching a place’s history and cultivating a sensitivity to what has come before us. Hope you like it. 😊🙏

    Kylie, This episode really brought back the memories for me of my grandparents, who were farmers in Greece; the way Egisto was explaining this history and life of the farm reminded me of my own stories from my grandfather. I am saddened to hear of the pain and suffering the farm went through during the war, all of Europe suffered. I saw so many parallels with my family as we come from a farming village too, to hear of the farm’s partisan history; reminded me of my village’s own partisan history, it’s such a tragedy. I hope to see more historical profiles, I love history and seeing this episode was so wonderful.

    When I visited Assisi a few years ago I admired and loved the old ceilings in many of the buildings there, both the museum or the restaurants etc which were made in historical buildings. I don't know what those design of ceilings are called but they rise up in a dome shape and are made with many bricks? Maybe similar in your stable/barn or any wine cellar? The Italian architecture is very special and can understand the strict planning regulations to enable retaining this type of historical architecture.

  • @Ceelle2
    @Ceelle2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lovely property...a lovely home. I thought the buildings were older than the 30's...but I guess they were designed to look as if they have always been there. The father of a former boy friend was a partisan that fought near the Swiss border...he and others used guerilla tactics to thwart the Nazi's.

    Listening to Egisto, brought me back to the years when my father told me similar stories from his homeland in Greece (sadly he has passed) and I have to admit I am quite emotional. It's vital that we persevere to maintain and preserve all that was, to be able to not only talk about history but see it, feel it, living and thriving and showing us the road they had paved, for us to walk on today!
    Many regards and the warmest hugs to the amazing Egisto, and a million thank yous to you Kylie! Sometimes I need to thank technology...without it, we wouldn't be able to enjoy THIS!!! xxx

    Fascinating - thank you, Kylie - beautifully conceived, filmed, and edited as always! Documenting Egisto's memories has taken you to a new level. I live in France now, and they are still trying to come to terms with what happened during the Nazi occupation in the last war. Like Italy, this southern region - under the Vichy régime - sided with the invaders. Just two years ago in our next commune they erected a little engraved stone monument on the verge of a track outside the village. It commemorates (after so many years) a 14 year old boy who was thought to be a 'collabarateur', helping the local Résistance by carrying messages They took him there and shot him, dead. It is very poignant . . . we must never forget.

    Kylie, thank you ever so much for this wonderful video! Your content is always so inspiring and beautiful, I cannot tell you how much my family and I enjoy your videos! I just loved hearing about the history of Guido's family farm, what a treasure trove of history! I actually did my Bachelor Thesis on the Italian Resistance during World War II, and this video was just a beautiful tribute to the partisans who sacrificed so much during the war. It was also wonderful meeting Egisto! What a wonderful friend and mentor for you and Guido. Thank you for your artistic eye, for being a creator with a sensitive and sentimental heart, soul, and spirit. Thank you for sharing your love of history and all things "old fashioned." I pray that your channel flourishes for you like never before, and that you will be granted unexpected and unprecedented opportunities and favor on your building project. Thank you so much for sharing the beauty and magic of Italy with the rest of the world. Take care, and may the Lord bless you abundantly today and always!

I know that you and Guido will do justice to the renovation of the property because you take the time to understand the historical aspects of the land. On another note, the surroundings are stunning ~ such a beautiful place to wake up to every morning! You are truly blessed. My gosh, your life, it is like the most beautiful of dreams, and Guido the handsome Prince. You live in a gorgeous area, rich in history and culture, everywhere the textures of nature and cultivation. I live in such a place as well, different of course, but still beautiful, a place thats good for my soul. I am like Guido's caretaker, a working man, feet planted firm on the earth, I can imagine the difficulties of the concept I am about to ask, have you ever thought to invite people to pay to come and work on this farm? I for one would love to connect to this land with my heart and my hands, and maybe there are others. It could be more trouble than it is worth, but to connect to a place like this by helping plant, harvesting, mucking out the stalls, to me this would be such a good pleasure. Thank you again, for sharing your life in these films, it is obvious that you are very passionate in what you do and I enjoy experiencing such passion, as I feel it in my being as well. I wish you much joy and love Kylie, thank you.

    • @KylieFlavell
      @KylieFlavell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Charles! Yes, I once asked Guido the same question. Not even to charge people but just to find a way of sharing some of the work. Some of their olive trees, for example, are still heavy with olives because it simply got too expensive to pay people to pick them all back in September/October. He told me that many of the jobs require people who know how to do the work and the average holidaymaker wouldn’t be able to do these agricultural tasks with the right expertise. Although it sounds like you would definitely have the skills!! All last spring Guido was out pruning the olive trees with Egisto because they get overtaken by these really robust weeds that can damage them and it took him about 4-5 hours per tree. Using the tractors and other machinery becomes a bit of an insurance issue. But it’s certainly something to think about. I’ll bring it up with Guido again.😊

    OH MY GOSH what an incredible episode. I love history and really enjoyed learning about the history of the farm which seems so elegant to me and I love stone as my father is a stone mason and always told me about the Italians and told me that they were the masters of stone construction. He worked with many Italian immigrants here in Canada in the 50s and 60s building in my hometown. I also went to school with many first generation Italians and I was also a first generation Canadian as my parents immigrated from England and met each other on the boat immigrating with their families to Canada when they were 19 years old
    Canada has a rich Italian culture and I absolutely love the dream real life you have living on this historical beauty in Tuscany. I actually cried while watching the people in the pictures you shared of times when people danced and celebrated the simple life and realizing how things have changed so dramatically today. I can remember my parents going to dances and having many get togethers and my mother cooking , what an incredible gift socializing is. I have 5 children and 3 grandchildren and when we are all together which has now been over a year , is the greatest gift life can possibly give me

      My heart fills with love for the partisans that change the world into a work of art
