  • If you’re looking for a funky small city car then there’s now a lot of choice in the lower-priced EV market. We conduct a group test of six 30k cars (which can all be leased for around £300/month) to crown a winner. In test 1 we take each EV for a quick test drive to assess road manners and general civility. They need to make a good impression as the three worst will be eliminated.

    Bizarre set of parameters to test city cars. I would have thought manoeuvrability, visibility and ride comfort over rough surfaces would be key criteria. Also, eliminating cars based on a subjective views in a single category seems flawed thinking. Surely scoring all the cars in all the categories would produce a fairer result. I suspect one of the reasons the Zoe has been such a good seller is that not only is it a decent car but its always offered a reasonable range, making it an easy car to live with. (BTW, the range you quote for the Fiat is wrong). The Honda is undoubtedly a good car but for someone with limited access to overnight charging (which is common in cities), it’s poor range could be a major PITA as well as making it virtually unusable for even the shortest weekend trips outside of the city. And then there is the price…..

      The Zoe also has a major advantage for city use (at least if you live in France), if you are reliant on public AC chargers which I think might be the case for a lot of people, it litteraly stomps the other four cars on charge speed thanks to its 22kW AC capability.

    • @IanMcc1000
      @IanMcc1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riccardomarinoni6733 Plenty of cars have a larger battery than the stated usable amount. Battery degradation is related to the amount of DC fast charging more than anything else, extremes of temperature notwithstanding. The Honda e will rarely be charged at a DC fast charger, because owners will be mostly charging at home. This is true of most EV owners at the moment, but this will change when EVs are the only cars for sale. If looked after, the degradation on newer EV batteries tails off at about 80-85% so most. This percentage is reached quicker with DC charging. All of the current generation cars have good battery management systems to prevent/minimize degradation and it looks like many of these cars will see out well over 200k miles.

    GOOD tests for a City EV, would include, "we randomly parked it in a full supermarket car park,
    to see how long it takes to find it, due to its unique looks", then, "we tried to cheekily emerge from a side road,
    into slow moving City traffic to see how many cars would go past, without letting us out", LOL,
    and the classic, "we drove it at 20 mph, down one of those streets, with 3 speed bumps across its width,
    to see how easy it was to avoid the speed bumps", then there's Tetris Test, "we got 3 passengers,
    one small, one medium and one large, to see how long it takes to work out, WHO sits WHERE".

I'm glad I test drove alot of EV's including brands I'd usually disregard. I ended up chosing the MG5 long range for the same price. Yes, it's not a city car but its not really as full length estate (shorter than my Prius it replaced), so parking ect is a breeze. Its much more comfortable, bigger (for a family of 4), better range, nearly double the charging speed and not to mention it has 7 year warranty. Interesting, the Honda e is certainly impressive, although, what is most important in a modern EV is firstly range, secondly range and thirdly range. Picking a car that the also offers a lot of space can‘t hurt either, plus it should also be easy to operate as well for all the basics, e.g. the AC. If I had to dig deeply into confusing and lagging touchscreen menu structures to control and set climate control, it is a no go for me. Among all tested cars, the Renault covers all these basics well. The Fiat also, spacewise not so, but everyone has different needs, in my opinion, the Renault, among those cars, is offering the best overall package and besides of the missing ACC, feature wise it ticks everything I would wish to have in an EV. Spaceship style cockpits are certainly fun to have and look at but what is really important here is having great range in summer and winter time.

    Once again Rory Reid does the old "good for the shops" quip. My 24kwh Nissan Leaf doesn't have as much range as any of the five featured cars and I drove it on an 890 miles round trip to Scotland in two days. Most people don't drive more than 35 miles in any given day. Also "City Cars" implies good for pootling around the city. But, you'll be lucky if you do a total of 80 miles while driving around a city all day. So, these cars are clearly more than just city cars. People really have to get over this range nonsense. For 90% of drivers it's never an issue. For the rest it may be an issue once a year. And if you're going to go mental about range then let's remember the Zoe had easily the most range, but you chucked it out of the running after the first round. Consistency?
