A very very well done review.
The people involved with making the external and internal design of the latest generation of Peugoets are working wonders.
The 3008 and 5008 are wonderful to look at.
My wish is I hope those engineers and designers are given another lets say 3-5k euros in selling price point to play with in the next generation of models to make them flawless
    - no cheap plastics in interior
    - glove box fuse box switch on rhd cars
    - no ugly stalks
    - adaptable flap on cup holder to adapt to circumference of bottle/cup
    - remove gloss black arches and in the interior
    - Panaramic roof on middle specced cara and not just top of the line GT specced models. These pano roofs are game changers imo just not enough people have yet to experience them to notice how nice a feature they are relative to a blocked out roof liner.
All in all love the direction Peugeot bave been steering the last 2 or 3 years.
You have a great well explained review here and im so pleased you are able to get your hands on one as one of the "little guys" at your subscriber level as opposed to the likes of autocar, evo & topgear who just smoke cigars and waffle on about the handling of cars like all buyers do is buy every single car on earth to see how it handles on a track.
Thumbs up, a comment and a click of the bell for the YT algorithyms.

French car electrics are legendary for their poor quality, they used to say that if you wanted to scrap your Pug/Citroen, just have the engine bay steam cleaned.
I had a 306 from back when Peugeot actually made a car that was worth the hassle of owning one, and that got to a point where going over a minor bump would randomly turn off/on/disconnect one two of the following...... The wipers, the headlights, the tail lights, the ignition coils, the lambda sensor or just the entire ECU.

Longer range version would be nicer - and likely still affordable (ish). Plus a hot hatch version.

I used to enjoy EV spotting when on a trip somewhere. It was easy to recognise a LEAF, an i3, a Tesla. I always had trouble telling Zoes from Clios but Souls weren't too hard to tell apart from their combustion version (probably because I had an EV one myself).
I can't keep up with all of these new cars, though. That's doubly true when we have these cars that are near identical between their EV and fossil variants.
Great that there are so many new EVs on the road but I'm a bit sad that my days of EV spotting are perhaps not over but certainly a lot trickier!

I tried this car and I really liked it. In the end I opted for an MGZS simply because I thought the 208 might be too small for our needs and the main gripe was no dealer within 60 miles plus Peugeot have a questionable reputation for customer service. That was enough to sway me away from what appears to be a good little car.

  • @jsouto77

I really like this car. it very much reminisces the 2016 audi a1 that is gathering dust and rust here now since the mrs got her hands on the SR+ model 3. She loves the way the model 3 drives and its not abdicating anything from the little a1 which looks great and is a dsg 1.4 petrol. I think you are right when you say they missed opportunity here. If that little car was not so strangled for power for the money, I reckon she might of been sold on it.

If you compare it to it's direct competition it hits a nice balance handling wise, it would have to compromise the mass market ride quality to get more from it. I've taken mine for "spirited" drives up Irish mountain roads and it's never disappointed as long as I remember that it's not intended to be a GTi. That being said, I'll be on the list for a GTi/Peugeot Sport version if they can get one to market and I think you are right that they need to do it.

Ahhhhh,.... The range. The second biggest reason I chose the Zoe over this (number 1 was the cramped and comically small rear seats). My ZE50 Zoe gets and absolutely guaranteed and rock solid 220 miles in summer and you have to really push it to get under 180 in winter (so far). For a car with a 50KWH battery, the e208 just doesn't have the range that it SHOULD. The ZE40 Zoe went further and it had 10KWH LESS capacity. And is three years old.

I was dithering between this and the Corsa-e but the poverty spec e-208 is worse than the lower-spec Corsa-e. The conventional controls on the Corsa and I that I managed to get a corsa-e at a good price without having to haggle made me go that way. For me, it looks as though it has been supplied pre-shunted. Furthermore, it's cluttered in design, all around, and the black wheel arch surround makes it look as though the arches are far too big. The front seats also seem to be quite claustrophobic, but that might be a camera effect. You also seemed to be very cramped for foot space around those apparently offset pedals.
At least we agree about the nasty piano black plastic and the ridiculous glove box which would struggle to contain a pair of gloves! From a usability perspective, it's generally not bad at all, and the range is adequate.

    1) when coming to a halt at, say, traffic lights, do I have to employ the P brake in ADDITION to the electronic brake each and every time?
    2) still on the subject of that front P button, must it also be pressed each time the gear toggle is moved from, for instance, B to N mode?
    3) that speed limiter (forget cruise control), which in my opinion is stupidly placed behind rather than on the steering wheel - how precisely does that facility work when you can't see the darn thing?
After the simplicity of my Zoe, the Pug's functionality in these things seems complex and bewildering.

Pretty car but do you go for the Corsa same car cheaper and you get knobs! Then the ID3 arrived and then the 500E. Trouble is all these cars are 30K plus.
Still Dacia will come along and give you one for half the price.

I love the look of this little car, I currently drive a mk3 Skoda Fabia, which is a great first car, in my opinion. I would love to drive this and I'm desperate to get an EV, it's just sad, personally, that my finances don't currently line up and I'm loathed to get this or any car on PCP or HP, not keen on the interest rates.

Definitely need to make an alternative to gloss black plastic. Everything looks covered in dust and you've only had it a short while. You'll need to clean it on a daily basis. I know the camera is probably going to make things look worse but that'll show up scuffs, scratches, anything. I had a phone made from similar material and after 6 months it looked like I'd taken a knife to it on purpose.

I think they look great, especially in the blue or the yellow. The side profile is very reminiscent of the 205GTi. I'm slightly disappointed to hear that it's not brilliant to drive - that seems like a missed opportunity. If I had to swap my Zoe (40) for something, it would probably be this, but the price to change is too significant - you could get a Zoe for around 17k a few years ago and now everything in the segment is >23k. On charging - what is the taper like? It's all very well having a headline of 100kW, but if it tapers quickly then that's meaningless.

It's fine to drive, really, always a bit of a personal thing though. I drive a BMW (petrol) at the moment, great car but not electric. Tried the e208, thought it was absolutely fine. Preferred the Mini, but it's a bit small... Give it a go if you're interested!

Hmm.... I think those pillars front and rear are a no no for me. I’m short, so need the seat forward that then brings the A pillar too much in my line of sight, especially at junctions. It’s not uncommon in modern cars. Otherwise I quite like it.

Put another identical motor in, albeit at the back. Sorted. Also, Honda worked out that the shiny plastic on the display behind the steering wheel of the gen 8 Civic was getting scratched to buggery, so come facelift time, they changed to a textured sort - Peugeot should take note.

Thanks, not keen at all on those large black wheel arches. Good review, but not for me, too small, slow and limited range, definitely a good second car, but not a primary driver.
Yes as a hot hatch it would be fun and have great appeal.

Heavy cars ride better than lighter versions because the ‘load’ % is smaller and thus suspension tuning doesn’t have to be as compromised.
Why BEVs are regarded as only having acceptable ride is a mystery to me.

I have the DS3 E-Tense which looks so similar to the E208, and the battery and motor are the same so real world range at 70mph will give you a poor 125 miles in the summer, unlike the lies they will tell you of over 200 miles. I have done 12k miles in my ds3 and at 56mph I can get 175 miles but then at 150 I need to look for a charger. I am giving back the DS3 as its a motability car for my autistic son and spending so long charging, when we can find chargers that are working, its just not practical so I am going to a Peugeot 2008 Diesel as they really do look amazing. I will in 3 years, when it comes to the time I hand back the next motability car check how the electric cars and chargers are doing. We are so limited on the motability scheme for decent range BEV's, there are none, yet..

Nice review, but saying it slaps competition in the face, I don't think so. The e208 was one of the options for a Fiesta replacement and the Zoe came first. Fair enough the interior isn't quite as well crafted and refined but there's certainly more space in the Zoe. I also found the infotainment system easier to use, with a much better Nav system. As for range, Zoe wins as well with easily 230 miles during the summer, and the power doesn't tail off above 50, it keeps giving. As you mentioned we're all different but from a family perspective the Renault wins with the Peugeot second. At the end of the day it came down to internal space and range.
