I went through love-hate "relationship" with this Nocturne. When I was asked by Lanaudiere Fesitval to select 7 Nocturnes for the concert ( I never played any before - to my utter shame ) I had to quickly flip through the sheet music and pick ones I thought I might stand :-) This one was number "last" on my list of things to do. I didn't start learning it until it was almost too late ( those who watched my webcast of practice can confirm :-)). I dreaded the moment when I will get sick and tired of this sweetest thing ever written with its gorgeous but repetitious melody....
Then I had my "eureka" moment . it happened when I started looking at Chopin's metronome markings - in all other Nocturnes they were perfectly in sync with today's consensus - maybe little faster here , slower there... But this one - oh my God ! Lento Sostenuto marked as 50 beats per minute in half-measure ( 150BPM in eights ). You know how fast is it ???? Check-it out and see if you can keep up with Mr. Chopin LOL ..... i can't , I still play it waaaaaay under tempo .Let's see how many "critics" will leave comments saying it is too fast .....But , no matter what it makes a perfect sense- and suddenly my dread turned into astonishment at Chopin's genius. The whole piece is suddenly transformed from overly long sugary-syrupy chant to an exalted and impassioned speech- you make whatever you want of this speech , maybe it is a declaration of love ? after all - the piece ends with the most beautiful duet of two voices....
The Complete Chopin Nocturnes are now available on

Valentina is one of very few souls who knows the depth of the soul and can also communicate the passion, pain, and beauty so eloquently, in this case, on the piano. She has been given a great gift, and she gives that gift to us. Oh, thank you Chopin, the composer who is she is channeling.

I've always had a great love for Chopin. His style is unique from most composers...he had the ability to take a gentle, calm piece, such as this, and still give it excitement and energy that most other composers mightn't have done. You mirrored this ability, and whenever I look up a new song on TH-cam of something classical, I always check for a version by you, Valentina! Thank you for enhancing my TH-cam experience, you are an incredible pianist, and I love everything you play! Best wishes!

This is one of my favourits in terms of tonal contrast, lyricism, thematic materials/changes, and OH GOD the modulation. Lovely tempo too; far from saccharine. I wonder why they don't perform this more often at weddings - it paints love so truthfully in ALL its tonal qualities - sweetness, love, elation, sorrow, and so forth - beautified, of course, in the art of fiction so wonderfully realized by Chopin.

I'm going to play this nocturne in a few days for an audition, and I still struggle with some passages. So I thought, let's watch great pianists' version to see if I'm allowed to play it a little more slowly. It was such a relief to find this video, until I read the text above it ! For sure the melody is much more fluid when it's a little faster, but this is SO HARD !!!

I'm myself a big shigatsu fan and if there is no one there its maybe because the nocturne wasn't listed in the tracks of the anime.
Actually, I discovered this piece because of this anime.
But maybe there is no dat much "Shigaaaaaaatsu

MrKaheden I liked the anime a lot too (1st anime I ever watched), but I dont really like seeing comments like that flood these videos, and even less on videos with pieces that weren't in the anime.
But yeah, maybe they ARE amazed by her playing lol.

I mean this was barely in there for what, 1 minute? It was hardly even audible and wasn't listed anywhere else as being included, nor was it in the soundtrack. You'd really have to go looking for it.

Hi Valentina, I've been listening to your music for nearly a decade and in that time have learned the piano to a reasonable standard myself (though not nearly as good as you!) I've recently written a homage to Chopin and would love to hear your thoughts (if you have the time to listen, but no worries if not!) P.S. you are incredible!

I enjoyed this more than the Rubinstein recording. Although I greatly appreciate Rubinstein for his technique, and although some may disagree, I think Rubinstein's interpretation of the Nocturne is a little more severe than the lush, melodic, lullaby a Nocturne should have (IMO). You embodied elegant beauty.

For people who's concerned with music timing or tempo..let me remind you that this is A NOCTURNE for christ sake! not an Etude??! Music is an expression of one's soul through the technique called Rubato..not some metronome set at the suggested tempo. Either you like the interpretation or you don't.

Chopin himself used a lot of rubato. Heck, the entire romantic period was full of it!
Funny thing tho, Nathan Shirley (a pianist and composer) has said, although I don’t know exactly where he got this from:
“The funny thing is that Chopin himself used an entirely different type of rubato, one which is virtually unknown to pianists today.
He would actually keep the left hand very steady, "like the trunk of a tree", while the right hand (melody) we would let freely drift early or late with rubato, "the branches and leaves".
It is very hard to find even old recordings where this is done. Cziffra can be heard using it with Chopin.
The type of rubato you mention is more of the Lisztian variety which ALL pianists use today. This type can be further divided into the groups of robbing the tempo but giving it back at some point (used more for older music), and robbing and not giving it back (later romantic especially).
Anyway, I composed a piece of music where I use Chopin's style of rubato for the main theme, but I actually notated the right hand rubato as rhythmically accurate as possible (without getting ridiculous). Here it is-“
(the piece is called Twilight on the Lake btw. It’s here on TH-cam)

I can't read sheet music and I swear I don't know anything about music, I'm a lover who gets caught up in chords and travels to places where few would go. I love this nocturne and consider Arthur Rubinstein his best performer.
You, Valentina, were the second person who made me hear and listen to the song several times. Your hands play the piano as if it were so delicate that the notes could get hurt if you "missed" the touch. Sorry for daring to give my opinion. I know that piano is not an easy instrument to learn and requires many years of practice, but I am human and as such I observe and draw conclusions.
Congratulations! I wish you fall in love with Chopin and toast us with the most beautiful chords.

Lisitsa - you have a unique contribution to make. The way you hold you fingers - as if you are caressing a little child- the way you make every difficulty seem easy - all of this is really much less important than the visionary intensity you bring to your interpretations. It is mesmerizing.
