Splendid presentation, thank you. The top plate of a round filed tooth has a hollow grind. Yes, the concave face might have a bit of a sharper edge, but just like a knife, the hollow grind won't hold a sharp edge as long as a regular flat edge.
I wish I could get paid to stop and hand file my chain. Out here on the West coast stopping to file is a good way to get fired. I always have two extra chains ready to change out as needed. I never hand file, chains are ground with a square grinder. We cut for 5 or 6 hrs, many times I get the whole day in on one chain. Very good tips on the hand filling. Thumbs up...
👍I haven’t sharpened a chain on the job for 35 years. All done on an SDM-4 Still some trying to figure out the hand filing. I’m seeing $12/file. Considering time and inconsistency- just not worth it for production cutting.
Now if “they” would only make square ground chain with a square ground it might make a good selling price piece of equipment. I don’t know about how well the pieces of carbide will hold up but it’s an interesting point of discussion.
Sorry this is so late- just saw it. The word “safety” is tricky. The different depth gauge designs are all about reducing the force of a kick back off the upper tip of the bar. It’s a good topic to cover. I’ll put a video out asap.
Great video, such an underrated and under supported channel. Thanks for your time on this, the explanations are great.

Sir, perhaps offtopic, but could you elaborate on the difference between a safety chain depth gauge and a standard chain depth gauge?
The depth gauges are the same, it’s the other “stuff” on the chain that makes it (the chain) difficult to deal with.
