I think you could do a video on how your jig was made. It would be awesome to see something like that!

    John,
Good to see you back in action, as I had noticed awhile back that you were out of service to us for several months!
Why don't you use a file guide with the hand filing to ensure that you are getting the right depth into the cutter? How can you tell you are putting the correct pressure vertically on the file so that the profile you create is the ~4/5 file depth (1/5 of the file diameter above the top plate) that I understand is that which is optimal? Pls., don't just say "I've been hand filling so long that my muscles automatically know how much up pressure to use to ensure the optimal height of the file in the cut".

I will leave the filing for the people with patience

Applies to standard saw chain as well right? Please do more of these!

Yes, sometimes it's faster to grind back close to the chrome- then finish it with a file.

What kind of stone do you run on grinder? I have Oregon grinder i don't use any more. No matter how easy i ground and tried not to overheat chain, it would and be hard to hand sharpen after having been ground. As i watched you grind i said to myself he's overheating chain, but i was wrong. Nice set up for hand filing, especially for rakers after grinding.

It from Diamond Grinders - has Diamond abrasive. $100
I clean it with Brake cleaner.
The stone discs don’t work well- constantly “dressing “ them to keep the correct profile shape.
The other big difference isy Maxx grinder grinds into the tooth for both left and right cutters. Many other brands grind in on one side and out on the other. Not an even sharpness on each side.

So where did you get the materials and what would one need to make this other then the bar ? I really like that ! Very informative...Keep the videos coming.

My local welder/fabricator friend made that up for me. Just a simple cam over lever with a spring. I'm surprised someone hasn't made a universal type that would bolt onto a bar. It's really nice to file chain held securely with good lighting, comfortable height.

Thanks for all the tips, and showing the close ups. How long do you normally get on a chain on the harvester, if you don't hit a rock or something? Are you only logging in the winter? It seems ice especially dulls the chains quick, but snow not too bad.

      Your welcome-
Tough to put a number on chains/volume of wood cut.
In a perfect world- I’ve run one chain for an entire day (no sharpening) and fell and
buck 14 MBF or 25 cords or 60 ton (not sure what measurement your using)
Not uncommon to mangle a chain from cutting into a rock or the ground. Deep snow
Is a challenge to cut low
stumps and not hit the ground.
I log year round however winter is when we really try to put the wood out.

Thanks! Yeah, I love cutting in the snow. But, hit rocks hidden under the snow sometimes too. It is bad with a 28" bar, but probably a lot worse with all the power that harvester has.@@gameoflogging

I can't understand how the file can produce a better edge than grinding. New saw chain is ground...isn't that good enough? Do you file your new chain before using? Once I learned how to grind chains, I got rid of my files cuz the grinder makes a damn near perfect edge.

I don’t approach the issue as an all or always.
The grinder at the chain factory uses a very high tech grinding solution that is sprayed on the tooth as it’s sharpened- allowing for a faster grinding disc speed resulting in a good smooth cutting edge. I’ve been to the factory. It looks like a washing machine when it’s grinding.
I’m using the grinder as a way to repair a chain that has been damaged. It’s simply faster.
Yes, I can leave a better edge on the teeth with a file than what I get with a round grinder.
