I usually try and blow my chains off before grinding but they still have residual pitch/oil. Have you ever herd of using a quick shot of brake cleaner on the stone to clean it up while it’s spinning, granted your angles on the stone are still good. The brake clean works well to clean the stone and does t seem to affect the stone as far as I’ve noticed. Great video. I’ve been square grinding for a couple years and still have some to learn. It’s truly an art in my opinion. I have a Simington

I use brake cleaner on my round grinder for harvester chain. I have not used it on my Silvey. I'll give it a try. Thanks for that tip!

Excellent video. I have been sharpening for while. I don’t know much, well very little about square sharpening. I want to learn. I work as firefighter and I teach my crew on chainsaw safety and maintenance. My question where did you get the chainsaw tooth prop from? Excellent tool to have I would be interested in buying one to teach sharpening to my crew. Thank you for gear video.

My local saw dealer (Husqvarna) had it in his shop. Said his distributor gave it to him. I have seen Stihl reps use a section of chain model which is about half the scale size of what I have.
Try asking at your local dealer.

Great video!! Curious if you've seen the square jig out there for round grinders and your thoughts on it if you have.

I have seen an adaptor someone made- small steel block that holds the tooth. 2 issues I think of is- holding the tooth tight given the 3 different gauges of chain used and dressing the stone in order to maintain the correct angles on the tooth. It looks like it works. I would need to try it before commenting on it's practicality for sharpening multiple chains on a regular basis.

Do you set the top and side plate angle of a “new “ disc with the dressers?

Yes, the new disc needs to be shaped using the dressers. It takes a few minutes. You need to go slow. I've seen some people use a hand held dressing stone first. That is faster. You get the edges close, by hand, and then do the final dressing with the dressers on the grinder. Once that's done, you just "dust them off" occasionally, as the stone gets dirty from the oil and pitch from the chain.

What I'm starting to realize about square grinding is that seems almost religious in nature. The adherence to ritual sharpening. Lol. And every body has a slightly different ritual interpretation. Just like religion. Trying to figure out what my ritual is going to be. ;)

Ha- yes. Some call it a cult. Others use the term “badassery”
Reality is, chisel chain is designed to be square “sharpened” either with a grinder or hand file.
In the early days, the grinders were so expensive, loggers would rent them. Trying to hand file and be consistently precise is time consuming.
For those reasons, most saw users reach for a round file. Round files work and the chain cuts.
However, with round filing, you give up some cutting speed, duration of sharpness, and smoothness “lack of vibration “.

Is there a price you would sell your grinder for?

    • @LGTrees
      @LGTrees ปีที่แล้ว

ha- sell? I've actually considered getting an insurance policy for it. Sadly, Silveys are no longer made. Maybe a gun safe for it would be the next best thing.

@@LGTrees Hey, you can’t fault a guy for asking! :) You’ve got a great grinder. I’m trying to get one to reverse engineer it, there’s a couple guys out there wanting to re-make the SDM-4.

@@Rhodesian_FAL I think there would be a good market for someone to do that. 30-40 years ago we all had to figure out on our own how to use them. Now, with TH-cam we can get new owners up to speed quickly.
