The 2024 Ford Ranger Is Now My Favorite Midsize Truck, But Is It "The Best"... Maybe?

- The 2024 Ranger is the perfect example of what's good for one person might not be right for another. For 2024 Ford has completely redesigned the Ranger with an eye on horsepower, improved towing, Baja running (in the new Raptor) and a wider bed for more practical weekend warrioring. What you won't find are: a long bed, a short cab, a 2-seat model, manual transmission, hybrid or... a sunroof. Yep, no sunroof. But since I'm not interested in those things but I would love a tasty 2.7L V6 under the hood... I'll take a Ranger...

I really really wish trucks went back to a bench seat being the norm. Fold down arm rest/center console and I’m happy. Put the shifter back on the steering column and move the cup holders and boom.
No argument here. -Travis
i agree except the bench seats ..having option with the back seats with flat floors is better than just bench seats with no flexibility
Noone under 60 wants that shit
I’m team Tacoma
got the weirdest flash backs to my dads truck reading this comment.
I ordered mine with the 3.0 V6 Diesel here in Brazil. It has 250 Hp and 450 lb ft (61.2 Kg m)
Cleaning the lense and saying how your mother cleans your mouth was for me the automotive scene of the month. 😁
If you enjoyed that you should check out our behind the scenes from this event. -Travis
Great review love all of the tech specs!!
I have a 2021 Ranger. That truck doesn’t need more power. 270HP and 310 torque it’s enough, but we love power. Men never will complain about that.
The 2.3 is the more practical choice, the 3.0 is "for the boys". -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide the 2.7 should be just right for it
I was going to go with the 2.3-liter model. The big reason for me is that the 2.3-liter is the most reliable of the EcoBoost enginesI was leaning towards the 2.3-liter model. The primary rationale behind my decision is that the 2.3-liter engine has demonstrated superior reliability compared to other EcoBoost engines. And it's more than enough
The 2.7 is a jeckle and Hyde. Reliable in the F150 and problematic in bronco. Hope ranger has the sorted v6 because I foresee a lot of people opting for it.
🤞🏼 -Travis
The first gen 2.7 Ecoboosts weren't great. Lots of leaks and valve issues.
Does current gen 2.7 still use a wet belt to drive the oil pump? That would be my concern as someone who is currently affected by fords 1.0L recall due to catastrophic engine failures caused by the wet belt wearing and the particles clogging the oil pump pickup. Also I have heard plenty of horror stories about ford's 10 speed transmission. Wonder if the trans is the same between 2.3 or 2.7.
A handful in the bronco that they fixed.
@@0HOON0 and yet are still on the road..
thank you for the review. The weather made it real to many of us
It was real cold. -Travis
Alex and Travis, Every pickup ought to have the built-in bed steps. I don't know why some brands continue to resist this obvious innovation. 🤔 Kudos to Ford for offering a locking rear differential in their RWD truck. For those who really don't need 4WD, a rear locker can be very helpful for dealing with the occasional sticky situation. Old timers may remember when the Ranger was the top trim in the F100 lineup. As such, I would like to daydream of a single cab Ranger with an 8 foot bed as a modern interpretation of a 'right-sized' pickup. 🤩
Unfortunately that will live only in your daydreams..... that or a very custom build. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuideClearly, you have never experienced the joys of a 'right-sized' pickup like the F100 with a three on the tree transmission. 😉
@@rightlanehog3151 I learned to drive on such a beast back in the 80s. Three on the tree, RWD, V6. I fear no winter weather after that.

Dumb comments like this are posted on every video with tons of up votes, yet none of you buy what you supposedly want.
I loved my Mav Lariat 4k tow but needed more tow. I liked the way the Mav drove and handled all our around the house needs and after TDing the Ranger I ordered the Lariat almost fully loaded. I have no allegiance to any brand and I looked at all the other midsizes but they just didn't click for me personally. Was going to wait for the 2.7 to come out but I won't be towing alot so i wanted better mpg for the times I'm not towing.
Cheers
Yay for rear amber turn signals! That is all. I'm sold.
Easy enough then. -Travis
Except a big FAIL on fact that lower does not light up. Looks constantly as if burt out. Ugly!
Maybe it's the fog light?
@@zoe7657I should have made my joy more targeted to the rear amber turn signals. It bugs me to no end that these haven't been mandated on US spec vehicles.
Glad to hear you like the new Volkswagen Amarok, but with a different engine.... At least in my country the Amarok is very successful because it is very comfortable to use every day. :)
It would be fun to have a VW version in North America. -Travis
You had me at locker with 2WD, rare, useful and absolutely brilliant!
Ranger has it! -Travis
I made sure my 2wd f150 had a 3:55 locker, it’s great for snow or mud
This has to do with most all pickups now. With electronic park and brake how well does it handle when it gets wet electronic parking brake when you broke a boat in the water?
I like the style of this but I’m hesitant after my Dad’s experience with his 4cyl Bronco. Lots of little problems, like windows not rolling down/up correctly and software glitches in the infotainment. It’s been in the shop several times now and it isn’t even crossed into five digit mileage.
That's what warranty is for but if it's a big concern there are other competitive offerings. -Travis
Most plandemic trucks have suffered with quality
I like the looks, I think the "grr my truck so angry" styling most brands go with is way overdone. The MSRP on the Raptor is even competitive with the optioned out Tacoma TRD Sport/Off-Road, and that's before Toyota adds the extra charge for the hybrid.
The Raptor is a compelling value. -Travis
A Ranger Lariat would be perfect for what I want except it doesn’t have a heads-up display, 60/40 split rear seat, rear AC vents; and no ventilated seat options. I know I’d be missing these features for the price I would have to pay without them.
This was a LONG overdue redesign, but it still seems and feels like a half-measure. It is 2024 and the top trim doesn't have: sunroof, ventilated seats, HUD, keypad entry, 60/40 folding seats, or rear vents. Most of these things don't need to be standard, but for them to not even be available options is just a swing and a miss.
The quicker Ford can fix those errors AND offer a PHEV option, the quicker they can dominate the mid-size truck market. I will happily "upgrade" from my Maverick Lariat FX4 to a Ranger Lariat FX4 PHEV as soon as they become available.
Powerboost or regular hybrid. Whichever fits the platform. Ridgeline to me is still the winner if not towing regularly. Much more spacious and tried and true naturally aspirated Honda V6 with in bed trunk. Most people use their trucks like crossovers. Maverick is the Hybrid option but with the dealers taxing everyone it ends up selling more Ridgelines. May as well once dealer pushes you into $36k+ on a Mav...
@@allanedwards2347 if Maverick hybrid was available with AWD and 4k towing that'd be amazing. Ranger hybrid with 4x4 and respectable towing (5500 or better) would be perfect.
Having the Maverick currently, I would truly appreciate the increase in bed size that comes with the Ranger; while it is a minimal increase in length, it is a considerable increase in overall volume that's massively beneficial for transporting gear or any material that can utilize the entire volume of the bed instead of being constrained by one particular dimension.
Ford's pretty up front about wanting people to just buy an F-150. That's why they treat the Ranger like the ugly duckling of the lineup.
@@allanedwards2347 People say "tried and true V6". Do you not remember 80s and 90s engines? Even Honda's were lucky to last 100K miles. Turbos have been around forever. Yeah 80s Saabs sucked. I got my first turbo ever in 2020 Ranger and it absolutely blows away any NA I ever had. I live in northern Wyoming and drive a lot at elevation, The low end torque is amazing and even at altitude it doesn't turn into a lugging shit box.
@@theglowcloud2215 Only in the US. Outside the North American market, the Ranger fills the role the F-150 does in NA. In Australia where the Ranger is developed, it sells amazingly.
Which has a better reputation for reliability and longevity the 2.3 or the 2.7? 🤔
Thank you Ford for not using gobs of shiny piano black plastic, especially around the center console. Well done!
Alex, Awesome Video 😎 BTW it's 70 deg. in Boston MA and it's Snowing in CA..😮 How Crazy is This 3/19/24?!?🤣😂🇺🇲
We would have taken 70 degrees. -Travis
The good mpg is also because it's a 2wd. I wonder how much of a penalty there would be if it were 4wd.
fueleconomy daught guv says the 4-cyl version gets (combined/city/highway):
2WD: 22/21/25 mpg
4WD: 22/20/24 mpg
The reason the combined rating is the same is the difference rounded off to the same figure. Might be actually something like 22.4 mpg combined for the 2WD.
Pretty minimal. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I think it's a good looking truck but my experience with Fords has been mixed. I'm somewhat spoiled with Acura (Honda) cars and SUVs . However, I think I'd find myself regretting a Ridgeline because I don't consider it a truck (old ways of thinking). 😎
I do have a soft spot in my heart for the Ranger because I do own a 2004 XLT. Having said that, this new one it's a really nice truck. My only complaints would be not having a 60/40 split on the back seat and the lack of storage under it.
Ranger is to Ford what Le Baron was to Chrysler: a name that's applied to whatever, whenever.
What I dont get is the dampener shock.. didnt they used to have it built into the actual hinge?
That I'm not sure of, I'd have to ask Ford....or Alex. -Travis
That’s a new torsion bar that’s been added, it helps with the closing of the gate when in the down position, along with the opening of it. I’ve seen other reviewers close the tailgate with two fingers

the rear passenger air vents are in the front
Does it come with free chiropractic adjustments after to push the start/stop button ? 🙃😂
Oh it's not that difficult to push. -Travis
Could the shift lag be corrected by Ford with a tune?
It could, but it seems like this was a deliberate choice to better care for the transmission. -Travis
Funny how the Honda Ridgeline has one of the shortest length yet the most roomy
And the less useful
For comparison, my 4000 mile old Ranger Bi-Turbo diesel runs mostly in full time 4wd [4A on the selector] and manages 36 UK MPG on your type of highway driving, which is US 30 MPG
Those are pretty good numbers. -Travis
There's a new Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and now Ford Ranger. It's an interesting time to be in the market for a mid-size pickup truck.
The Honda Ridgeline better get a new model soon, or else it'll be left in the dust.
There's a risk there, yeah. -Travis
Unfortunately the 2.3L I4 is GDI only, the V6s are both dual GDI and port injection...

I am fond of thr previous gen that had the good old 3.2 tdci 5 cylinder manual and some iterations of Mazda Bt 50 too with 6 cylinder diesel manuals ....usa its petrol petrol petrol....
It makes complete sense for Ford to put out a hybrid Ranger eventually. They'll be the only ones that can claim they have a hybrid truck in every size category from small truck to midsize, to full size.
They have options for sure. I'd love to see them be first with a PHEV midsize option. -Travis
I’m glad Ford just released the best offering in the segment 🎉
It's a strong showing, checks a lot of boxes. -Travis
The steering wheel in my Maverick and in this Ranger is way better than they used to be in pick-up trucks. Pick-ups used to get boring almost 2D steering wheels with very little styling.
That's interesting how Ford didn't use the same "locking" mechanism for the rear seat bottom as the Maverick ....though the Ranger doesn't have nearly as much under-seat storage.
I like the V6 option!!!
Turbo or naturally aspirated? -Travis

I'd expect that RAM will release a response to the Ranger Raptor at some point. They'll probably put the 540hp 3.0 Hurricane high output engine in. They'll need a midsized truck first though.
Ram *_Dakota_* is supposed to be imminent.
The midsize truck is an important first step. -Travis
Inline 6 would be hard to fit in a small truck nowadays.
@The-fs5wn it may be difficult, but since it's going to be RWD based, it's possible. Or they'll just develop a supercharged or twin turbo version of their 3.6 V6 instead. I don't know if RAM will be willing to develop a new engine for just one truck though.

Most new vehicle shoppers don't change their own oil. -Travis
Alex, what is your evaluation of the "start stop" engine technology? I had a rental car that the engine stopped/started and it was so very annoying. I hated it. Is there any way to buy this truck with an engine that doesn't do that? Is it really worthwhile?
I'm not Alex but I can tell you that it's a function that you're able to turn off if you'd prefer it that way. Honestly it's not something I would turn off in my own vehicle but for those who don't drive with it on a regular basis it does feel different and it would take some time to adjust to. -Travis
Those interior panel fitments are like early 2000s Pontiac class. I hope it's just early production...

Can't say I noticed any glaring panel fitment issues myself. -Travis
It’s certainly the best pickup truck in Europe. This and its badge engineered sister, the VW Amarok, both built in South Africa for the UK. The only variant we get that is built in Thailand [where Australia gets all models] is the Raptor in V6 gas and 2.0bi-turbo diesel. Personally I own the Wildtrak trim 2.0 bi-turbo diesel which is very refined and particularly economical considering its 205hp and 500Nm torque. As far as looks go, the original T6 I also own is a far more handsome beast. However and apart from a driver’s seat that no longer tilts independently front and back and some cheap black plastic on the rear bumper. Hybrids are on the way late this year from Thailand and South Africa. It is a pity America don’t get the diesel duo, the 2.0 in three power levels, single and bi-turbo, and the V6 three litre that was previously fitted to the F150 and Range Rover Sport. In Europe, all but the coil sprung rear end Raptor and the top leaf sprung Amarok Adventura have a 2250lb load capacity and 3.5 ton [7700lg] towing limit. This may mean that our springs are stiffer at the back, although there are several leaf spring versions fitted across the range with the Wildtrak being slightly softer unladen than some of the more basic models. Nevertheless the Wildtrak retains a 1060kg carrying capacity. Otherwise ours and your models seem identical.
Diesel is very out of fashion in the US right now. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide For vehicles under two tons it is also out of fashion in the UK. Diesel fuel is actually 10p/litre more expensive than petrol, which I guess is around US $0.40 per US gallon more.
Almost all pickups and large SUV’s like the Defender and Range Rover are sold with diesel engines here and the Ranger, Hi-Lux and Isuzu and VW Amarok are only available here with diesel engines. A small proportion of Range Rovers are sold with petrol engines but very much a minority. SUV’s in the Discovery Sport and Kia Sorento class have increasing sales as petrol mild hybrids and some plug-in hybrids.
that isnt true. We would love a diesel in tis truck. It would be the number 1 selling engine. We just dont get the option because emision regulations. The US model would require a DEF addon which would make it worse and everyone would want their DEF deleted and that is super costly not to mention highly illigal nowadays. I would love a diesel, but ill wait for the 2.7 instead, not because its out of fashion, but because it just isnt offered. If I was rich i would import one from the philippines . They have the only diesel rangers that are left hand drive. Hopefully the US can get some small diesel options soon. This DEF bs has gatta stop...@@AAutoBuyersGuide
@@billygames7107 DEF/Adblue is fitted to all European diesel Rangers and it is not an issue. I have three light vehicles with DEF and not had a single problem. The fluid is cheap and it uses about a quart every 4000 miles, so needs topping up every about 15,000 miles with 15 litres. It is very cheap fluid when bought in 20 litre cans at oil distributors or parts suppiers or agricultural stores and machine dealers. If you have early generation DEF vehicles or have issues with current systems, then those systems are below par. Most vehicles seldom if ever have an issue with their DEF performance. It significantly reduces exhaust gas recirculation volume requirements, which is a huge advantage long term.
So funny that we’re used to calling these things midsize. They are pretty dang big.

At least Ridgeline gets closer than the pathetic bed on this Ranger. I mean, under 5 feet? Cmon ford. That's not a bed.
@@AAutoBuyersGuideI'm sorry Travis but that's an old trope that (the industry likes) keeps getting repeated. Yes, some folks do (and increasingly have to), but 6 ft beds have been available in compact/midsize for decades.....just because you want a 6-ft bed doesn't mean you want the behemoth rest of the full size truck, by a long shot. A compact/midsize with a 6-ft+ bed means, especially for singles and smaller family couple, much more useful for camping, play, hauling, work, projects, Etc,...for those still not necessarily needing/wanting the extra height, width/girth, weight, fuel use and (historically) cost of the bigger trucks. So, I guess for those wanting the longer bed it's on to the Tacoma and Frontier,...fine, but even they restrict on some models versus others. Ie, Toyota - some lesser trims yes, but no on TRD (both Off Road and Pro I think), but yes on Trail Hunter. Odd. You need a spreadsheet for this stuff anymore!
Otherwise, exterior design much cleaner on the Ford, IMO.

For me the styling on this new Ranger is just okay. Out of all the newer models I still thing the GM twins look the best followed by Tacoma and then Frontier. Wish the Ranger looked a bit more aggressive is all. Ford is overloaded with F150's right now so the reality is you can shop for one under 50K if you aren't picky and get a lot more for your money then spending 40K+ on a Ranger.
The Canyon may be the top of the looks department for me but there's a lot more to a truck than the look. - Travis
The 2024 Ranger looks like a Grand Maverick.
I'm suprised that Americans aren't getting the full catalog of Rangers, especially because Ford is a US based company. Here in Europe we're getting another engine option: the 3l turbo charged V6-diesel plus the Wildtrak trim level, wich is the "outside-USA"-equivalent of what Americans know as the Tremor-Trim in the F150: wich gives you more offroad capability (AT-Tyres, center- and rear-differential-lockers and the auxiliary buttons like in the Raptor, but unlike the Raptor keeps the leaf-springs and can be optioned with the 3l V6 Diesel (meaning less compromise for work duty).
We never get the diesel options in America
Ford is US based but as you said Ranger is a global platform - and Ford basically ignored it in the US for a decade. Now one US plant makes it, and it’s just coming online.
Ford in the US doesn’t get it. They’re brain-dead from all the F-150 sales, it’s all they care about.

It's difficult to make a diesel meet the current emissions standards. That coupled with the price of diesel in the USA means it just doesn't make financial sense. Diesel in the 1/2 ton offerings never really took off and only GM is left trying but the take rate is fairly low.
I think the answer is likely market research. Diesel costs more and the majority of folks buying midsize trucks don't want to spend more, otherwise they would be looking at full size. -Travis

31:55 you say multiple times 2.7 under THIS hood. do you have the 2.3 or the 2.7? no sleep aside, come on now... tat has a 2.3 under teh hood
We were driving the 2.3. -Travis
im aware. I was just pointing out you said 2.7 under "this hood" a bunch near the end. Get some rest.. ✌ @@AAutoBuyersGuide
At these price points and now negligible size and gas mileage, a certfied low mileage used F-150 is the better choice, more options, more durable and better resale value and now the fullsized trucks are coming with either V6 or 4 cylinder engines. So yes Ford did a great job on the Ranger but at this size and price, the Maverick really should have been the Ranger. Most people don't need the power and towing difference of the two. So like Toyota does with suvs, redundancy. So again for me there are just better options and no need to ever buy one of these new ✌🏽❤️
Used vehicles will always have a better value argument. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Travis thanks for your timely response, I'd argue precisely why I see no need to buy one new, especially when a low mileage vehicle nowadays even with a bit higher mileage still looks, runs, drives and feels new, so it's just not practical to buy new especially with nowadays prices but for some YOLO 🤪
Idk man this truck seems very compromised compared to its completion, no standard push to start, no bed or cab configuration, no sunroof, no ventilated seats. The powertrain options are killer but I feel it’s just missing a lot of stuff and it just comes off as boring to me. Trucks like the Canyon, Tacoma and Colorado all have more features and stuff that’s gets me excited, this just seems boring except for the Ranger, and this is probably only me but really don’t like the vertical screen layout, it looks very aftermarket Tesla knock-off to me
Compromised or simplified? -Travis
Did Ford really had to have you out in a blizzard? Why not in the middle of a hurricane instead.😊
A hurricane doesn't have as pretty of a backdrop. -Travid
Still can’t be the Tacoma with a stick shift and no turbo charge engine.
If you get a new Tacoma they're all turbocharged engines. -Travis
Ford missed it with the Ranger, AGAIN! How can an "American" company not build a mid size truck specific for America?? TACOMA WILL STAY WINNING! 🌮
Tacoma may stay on top, but how did Ford "miss it"? -Travis
Your fanboy user name says it all🙄
Nobody likes chrome on their truck….
That's very much not true, even if chrome isn't the rage right now. -Travis
I like chrome it looks better than greasy black plastic or jet black polished plastic that gets all scratched up
I don't mind chrome. I don't like all the black out everything trend--eps seeing folks black out their rear lights (unsafe).
I don't like chrome or piano black plastic 😄. Chrome is too reflective and doesn't look modern. The piano black plastic scratches way too easily and then looks bad. Same for the shiny black "pockets" in the rims. Got tiny scratches too soon. I'd rather have maintenance free rims like I had on my 2004 Taurus.
Painted bumpers will rust and stain faster than chrome finish. Enjoying my chrome-package F150 XLT
That is nice, but until Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge can produce a more reliable engine than Toyota or Honda, my money will go to Toyota or Honda.
No manual transmission. Fail
Far from the only truck that doesn't offer a manual. It's a dying breed sadly. -Travis
No to the Maverick, its simply ugly. I'm down to 3 choices, the Frontier (for its looks and V6), tand maybe this Ranger, although yes it looks somewhat carlike up front. Tacoma no go with the 4cyl.
It's not a V4 Travis. SMH. It's an inline 4.
You're right, I misspoke. -Travis
I'd rather buy the Coma with an exploding front differential. They are supposed to be better. See tfl truck.
We saw TFL Truck at the event, we drove the Raptor together (video coming soon). -Travis
Those toecoma’s do break easily
You guys look ridiculous getting snowed on & being soo serious....
We're committed to the job, if you want less serious you should be sure to check out our "behind the scenes" for this shoot. -Travis

And Toyota will continue to outsell the Ranger if you only offer it with limited body styles and options. This doesn't really seem like a complete redesign based on what I'm seeing here. There is nothing here that makes me want to use Ford's configurator to build one for myself.
Toyota will sell more 2 doors, sure, but I can see this cutting in to their 4 door sales. -Travis
The 10-speed transmission reliability is definitely not there
Wrong
Nope...
What suits your fancy instead? -Travis
It is so ugly. How boring. No extra cab + 6foot bed.
It might be nondescript but I can't see how it's ugly. -Travis
Another overpriced scrap metal. I see lots filling up with these because no one will be buying it. Dumb ford. Lol.
What's the over under on seeing manufacturer incentives for $3k, $5, and $7.5k? I'm thinking 3, 5, and 11 months out.
If you have scrap metal like this available let me know, I'll come pick it up. -Travis
Could we actually get some MEN to review these trucks.?
Feel free to replay the video if you missed that part. -Travis

Whatta hell kind of comment is that?
@@IamGroot786 pretty straight forward. You tarded?

You could have removed the snow from it before presenting the truck... That was lazy... sorry.
