I think its good that you test the vehicles before the update and after the update, because then you can show "hey look this update really made a big difference, and here is how"
"All of our compressors need a 12 volt battery so since the CT runs on a 48 volt system I'll have to go to a gas station." ??? As you point out, the truck has standard outlets for you to plug in your air compressor or even a cordless one which you almost certainly already own. Likely, he was thinking about the Rivian's built in air compressor and how "cool" that is. Personally, I've always considered the Rivian's flashlight in the door, portable speaker under the center console, and even the onboard compressor, gimmicks that sell the truck, and then quickly break or become outdated just to take up space. Kinda like the compass in the stock of Ralphie's Red Ryder BB gun from "A Christmas Story". Does anyone actually put a compass in the stock of their deer rifle?
Could never hate ya Tommy. Thanks for doing a revisit after the update. You guys are covering this thing in an objective manner and that is especially challenging with how polarizing this it is.

I think it's good that you tested the Cybertruck offroad before the updates. It's interesting to see the difference that an over the air update can make.
I don’t recall a modern Subaru needing internet connectivity upgrades to accomplish anything… I sure don’t remember any solid axle long wheel base 1990s 4x4s needing anything other than a knowledgeable driver or mechanic.
@@JoeOvercoat It's actually very cool how the OTA update can utilize existing hardware for new uses as time goes on. No longer does your software stay at the production year, it keeps getting better with time. Tesla is a tech company foremost, not a car company...
I can tell you from experience in cookware that stainless steel absolutely scratches, bends, and dents, it just doesn’t rust. It also reacts with some materials causing pit marks, but not sure if that would afflict the Cybertruck. I should look into old DeLoreans to see how stainless steel really holds up over time.
Great video. I'm glad you did both videos with and without the update to show how much it improved. Alex did a stellar job with the camera work. He's A horrible spotter but a hell of a camera man lol.
AMAZING! You get tires for most of your rigs (eg Ram 2500) - get them for the CT - Tsportlime has smaller wheels to get more rubber for rock crawling and off roading - also allows less pressure and smoother ride. Once Tesla or someone else offers off road bumpers - get them. You did for the 2500… You should try to work with Tsportline - they have some amazing stuff for the CyberTruck!!!
It’s pretty cool to see the before and after results of the offroad performance update. It’s crazy that that much capability can be gained from an over the air update.
Gotta love coders 💻, they can do WAY more than your average GREASE MONKEY. The same coders that did this update are the same who code Space X rocketships to come down by themselves !!
Hate is a strong word ;). Real car people appreciate good engineering, glad to see it's improving. Hopefully they take this video as feedback to make it better in the future too
I do appreciate good engineering, and this thing has very little of it. Granted it's pretty good off-road now, but it still sucks at everything else a truck is supposed to do
@@yissibiiyte yeah I'm yet to see anybody carrying long pieces to timber or ladders on one yet. The 48 volt architecture and steer by wire is pretty interesting though

Amazing results! I’m not a fan or a hater. Just a car guy that likes something different. And it’s doing things that a Raptor should do and also will ride as good and quiet as anything else.

EVs and off-road are like peanut butter and jelly. Instant and linear torque, low center of gravity, silence, multi motors, no clutches and transmission shifting. Crawling on low speeds doesn’t consume a lot of energy. And downhill recuperation returns what you wasted when climbing. Then you can camp in your vehicle in “camp mode” keeping desired temperature like in capsule hotel, without running an engine.
Smooth brains try to pretend that you'll run out of battery - but it's not the case! They are wildly efficient offroad because they do not idle and they have regen. ICE vehicles have to bring a bunch of fuel cans with them. None such issue with EVS. Also, I think the longest offroad stretch in the US is 74 miles - and it's not particularly technical. A Rivian did the Rubicon trail recently. EVs can go pretty much anywhere ICE can.
Good points except for downhill recuperation. You're hardly ever if ever moving fast enough downhill off roading to produce the power required to even kick in the regen mode.
17:00 seems like you'd want the rear steer enabled on sand because it lets you wiggle all four tires if you start to get stuck to "bit" into the sand out to the side and pull you forward. Normally people just do this with front tires but you have the rear tire movement. -- same for mud or snow I'd think.
yep. I used to put too much stock in the engine. Now I know it's really all in the diffs. My wife has a Grand Cherokee with open diffs and it sucks in deep snow compared to my truck with LSD.
It’s amazing how people that whine about “American made” are the ones that hate Tesla and moan about EVs. From top to bottom Tesla is the most American manufacturer.
You realize why people hate EVs right? It’s not because they just hate EVs but it’s because the government wants to kill off ICE engines before all the infrastructure is built to support mass adoption. ICE engines are actually pretty clean these days nowhere near where they were probably even 10 years ago but they want to outlaw them? No one wants what they’re forced to have
Yep, I’ve even herd people assume your a liberal if you drive a Tesla. Hu?? Why, only liberals like fast cars that are cheap to drive and made in the US? Ok..

@@tommydevine9993it doesn't need air, I think that's the main point of that statement. You could put one on the moon or Mars and it would drive around just fine.
Need to consider all factors. Will it do as well as a purpose-built rock crawler on rocks? No. Will it do as well as a dune buggy in sand? No. Will it do as well or better than almost any other stock extended cab pickup with a 6` bed? Yes. It will both keep up with or beat other, similar trucks on the trail and it will also keep up with or beat sports cars on the road, and beats other stock trucks in tractor pulls. It's also bullet proof (for hand guns), rust proof, sledgehammer proof, will be able to drive itself, will likely get top safety ratings since Tesla always does, is as nimble as an SUV and super easy to drive... No other truck has CT's full range of capabilities. If you find a vehicle that can do any one thing better, it won't do as well on other metrics.
Way to go guys tommy that clip of you getting mad is still hilarious. And you have grown so much and everything bro it’s incredible to see it Alex. Outstanding filming job
Great video going through the off-road settings! I’m definitely not a fan boy, but the departure angle on any truck is going to be the Achilles heel. Any Raptor I’ve used would have dragged the rear there, but that isn’t what they were targeting when they built it, and I feel like this isn’t what they were targeting when they made this. But it is still impressive it went through it all, just don’t run out of electrons!
Impressive. Most regular trucks aren't able to handle a rock crawl course without significant modifications. For all the crap Tesla is catching over the truck, its definitely capable of modest off roading.
The difference is the ones that off-road well feel like crap on the road. The Cybertruck on Sport mode feels like a large car, it still holds corners, and it accelerates like a sports car still. You don't feel bumps and there's no floaty feeling. It's super-quiet inside, the sound isolation is really impressive. I love this truck. I'm getting lower-clearance bumpers and off-road tires, quick-disconnect sway bars, and it will be a monster offroad too.
@@domg7359 Basically this, they've made something more road-oriented but that's also highly capable of off-road, which makes perfect sense. Lets be real, most people buying the Cybertruck, any Jeep, or Raptor, are just not going to go off road, they'll rub off a small splash of dirt they get from a puddle every now and then. :) I personally think they've done a really good job with that balance.
I'm impressed, thank you for taking it back to Moab after the update! Is it my Jepp? no...but it's a far better Truck that the normal full sized trucks offroad! This is what I've waited for for months, someone to do a real 4x4 trip on sections of the trails I've been on in my Jeep.

@1:10 you said if it were a Jeep Gladiator ect you wouldn’t have to do any disassembly before hitting the trail but Jeep say in their manuals and have done since about 2006 to remove the side steps or running boards before going off road further Jeep also says to remove the bumper end caps too so far more disassembly required (as recommended by Jeep) before going off road than a Cybertruck.
Hahaha dude the trails you would need to do to remove those end caps , the Tesla wouldn't even get past the first obstacle. The approach angle isn't even on the same playing field . And rubicons don't come with side steps, they comes with rock rails. But plenty of jeeps with steps have conquered 6-8 trails all day. Btw no ev is doing a level 5
@@fastfed LoL Dude! my comment was, as recommended by the manufacturer since he stated that Tesla recommends removing this items before going off road. I can't imagine having to unhook my trailers every hundred miles at a super charger. I think I would like a wrapped, lifted and accessorized Cybertruck as daily driver, but Damned it is Butt UGLY as stock. After sitting in one, I want one even more. And more sites will need pull thru. But for camping, I’d just go 150 miles per day and stay at a campground to charge overnight.
Electric trucks can't do long distance towing well. But they can basically do everything else; much of it better. A very large majority of truck owners never tow or only tow short distances. Some will say range is a problem, that they can't do a 1000 or whatever miles between pumps, but very few bladders can handle that anyway. I never drive more than 3 hours without stopping.

The difference in the performance between your last off road adventure and this one is mind blowing. This is a true testament to the sheer power of a single Tesla OTA update. Regardless of all the haters, buying a vehicle that keeps getting better through ongoing updates with added features and improved software is impressive and commendable!
It's not like the OTA update magically gave it lockers. They were always there but just blocked. Unblocking a feature that was already there is certainly not impressive.

Your videographer captured some stunning angles of the Cybertruck. I’ve always liked the truck, well not the first month, but after it grew on me. But some of those angles make it look like a masterpiece!
As it should be used? Lmao it’s absolutely terrible as an off road vehicle. It can’t even handle a car wash without breaking unless you put it in “car wash mode”. It’s an unreliable, poorly made piece of trash
And what do you mean by "doesn't break unless you put it into carwash mode" 💀 All Teslas have that so that the system doesn't think the car is being vandalized or something lol. You know how sensitive Tesla sensors are.
I can definitely see an aftermarket metal bumper appearing. The stock bumper is as it is because they care about aero (i.e range), but if you care more about off road performance and not as much about freeway, aftermarket is the way to go
This is what I’m talking about. Part of the whole experience is to experience the air software updates think that didn’t exist 5 or ten years ago. That’s the magic of a modern cars, the modern ELECTRIC cars and the magic of Tesla brand.
CT is a pretty awesome package. It's not so much that it gets 10s in any one category, but it gets 7s, 8s, and 9s in every category which is super impressive. It will beat other stock, extended cab pickups with 6'+ beds off-roading and in tractor pulls, and then go and beat sports cars on the road with your whole family on board, building supplies in the bed, and a trailer hitched behind.
@@jamesp6283makes me think of a terex truck bed. They don’t seem useless, seems easier to get gravel, sand, dirt out of then sweeping around wheel wells.
@@jamesp6283 For what I would put in the bed? Just as useful as any other full-sized (but non-8' bed equipped truck). Better video, get a spare, (and a pump) change the pressure and try it again..? You pointed out one of the best things about owning a Tesla, it just keeps getting better over the years of ownership as a result of the OTA updates🤓👍🏻👍🏻
To be fair there are other factors than software updates to consider. You can't for instance update the extremely dated design of their cars with a software update. Or fix atrocious panel gaps like you see on the CT. Love Tesla and their mission, but they do a lot wrong
Those plastic fairings are all for aerodynamics so it can make the range numbers. my tacoma doesn’t have them however its not like it gets great highway mpg.
I did a summer travelling around welding a crack repair kits on New Holland combines. Would have been so cool to pull up in a Cybertruck and plug my stick welder into the 220 volt outlet and get er done.
I think your thinking of the plaid, when u mentioned the 1000hp number, the beast CT trimotor has 845hp...great video, its amazing what they can do with software updates
Yes, the Plaid has carbon fiber wrapped rotors for more RPM while the cybertruck has hairpin stators for a stronger magnetic field and more torque. Can't wait for them to combine both and get ~1'600 hp. Hopefully in the roadster.
Here's an idea. Make a mini truck out of this design language. Something the size of the original tacoma, give it 300 hp and call it a day. If the price was 30k, it would sell by the bucket loads.
@@rickpetzold3035 Those people put in the reservation just for the IG. They also thought it would cost 40k. You can't even get close to that price in any iteration. There's no legitimate auto reviewer that is giving it a glow review. It has many many flaws.
Nice report. I can see people modifying the CT with aftermarket bumpers, real off road wheels and tires ( so you can air down). And different rocker panels for sliders. It’s too bad Tesla didn’t make the wheel wells larger for bigger tires, but guys may be able to mod those also like I had done on my Tundra TRD. I am glad you liked the steering for off road it makes total sense. The steering wheel sizes is awesome. No need for a large wheel with steer by wire. It will be interesting when the rear wheel steering gets improved I.e. more degrees added with the planned update. I was happy to see you not baby the truck like many will do because it is a truck after all. A full size truck isn’t the greatest on steep approach angles but it looked like it did well. I forgot to add that soon I think you will see Baja style spare tire racks above the bed for a spare tire.
Tesla should offer steel high clearance bumpers as an option from the factory eventually, though I think some aftermarket companies already started to make bumpers like I think unplugged performance is selling a high clearance steel bumper for the cyber truck
Once the after market gears up it will eat this trail for breakfast and a lot worse. Tesla made a road truck and added off road a lot of those compromises were needed but hurt the off road and they are easy for the after market to make as it's stuff they already make for ice off roading body kits, lift kits etc

The Cybertruck is handling this much better than I expected. Would many take a 100k truck offroad? No, but these will get cheaper and it bodes well for other EVs.
Ya but buying evs used is not a good idea due to battery life span the older the battery gets the less life span it has and then will eventually need replaced which is a 20k or more replacement and at that point you better off getting a new car
@@johntheux9238 90% of these cars are lithium ion, and it doesn’t matter how many cycles a battery can handle it’ll still be a 20k replacement at the end of the day when the battery goes flat at the end of its life and once you hit 10 years of use you dont know when that batteries gonn a die
after 10 years current battery tech will be dirt cheap and the new battery tech will be worlds better and longer lasting. just put in the new battery tech. get 1000 miles of range by 10 years
If that trucks software is worth the $, you would not have to air down out in the sand. And you could stop anywhere and not worry about "getting stuck". Toyota CC system will and has(I have done it)dig you out of any sandy hole you accidentally or purposely dig yourself into. 😏 Yet seen anyone from TFL use a feature of any 4WD vehicle out in the sand demonstrating their abilities to do that. Including a Toyota product. I think it would a good comparison to others. Like doing a drag run. Which system can crawl out of a sand hole best.
Lets do some math, I know it's scary but bear with me for a minute. 20-100kWh per day would be 60-300 miles per day in an average EV. That's a fudge-ton of driving. Most people barely drive 20 miles per day per NHTSA. The most my house has used in a month is 800kWh, the least is 360. I live in Colorado where it goes from under 0F to well over 100F, HVAC is far and away my biggest energy user. You don't see people whining about how air conditioners are ruining the power grid, yet they'll use more power than EVs. You also don't see people mentioning how much power drilling and refining oil uses, hint it's a fudge-ton. As we cure ourselves of the gasoholism we'll be using less energy for that so more can go towards the EVs. I digress. When I got my Chevy Bolt my power bill did not double, it did not triple, it barely increased. Side note: My insurance didn't go up either. Turns out most of that is just greedy insurance companies and people buying $100,000 cars. Get a more reasonable EV and a decent insurance company and you're golden. 360/30 == 12kWh per day. 800/30 =~ 27kWh per day. To just double my power bill I'd have to drive at least 50 miles per day in the best weather, and well over 100 miles per day on a snowy/super hot day. Almost nobody drives that much. BUT even if they do they'll still save money because it is sooooo much cheaper to charge at home vs paying for gas. Here electricity is 14c/kWh and gas is $3.40 per gallon. Assuming a 25mpg car that's 13.6 cents per mile. Taking my Bolt's 4mi/kWh that'd be 3.5 cents per mile. So even if your home energy bill doubled you'd still save money over paying for gas in an average efficiency car. That's also ignoring maintenance and negative externalities of burning gas near where you live, and no mention of how much more fun EVs are to drive, nor any mention of climate change.
you think this Cyber Truck in daily driving is going to use more electricity than cooling my house in AZ summer... I'd love to see that napkin math... BTW, our 2 non cyber truck Tesla's we currently own cost us less than 75 bucks a month, out of the 600-800 dollar electrical bill in the summer.
@andrewt9204 I use hold in VFD applications all the time without issue, and without cooling. Tesla has liquid cooling for its inverters, motors and batteries.

It’s always amazing to me to see the improvements in a Tesla with new software updates like what we see here. You mean you weren’t in extract mode when you got the bumper rash? Great feedback to the Tesla team on the stiff suspension. Finally you mention how steer by wire is an off road game changer. Thanks for bringing the truck out with the new updates.
It must be nice to have something you buy get better after you buy it. Even though you prepaid for these features. Most vehicles just get progressively worse after purchase. To have more features added after purchase must be at least somewhat refreshing

But it is still impressive it went through it all, just don’t run out of electrons!
That cinematic of the sand was epic!
Impressive. Most regular trucks aren't able to handle a rock crawl course without significant modifications.
For all the crap Tesla is catching over the truck, its definitely capable of modest off roading.
17 inches of clearance is insane. Raptor R w/ 37'' is only 13''. Take the bumpers off this and it'll be in a different league.
The difference is the ones that off-road well feel like crap on the road. The Cybertruck on Sport mode feels like a large car, it still holds corners, and it accelerates like a sports car still. Agree. No reason everybody needs to have EV only
Electric trucks can't do long distance towing well. But they can basically do everything else; much of it better. A very large majority of truck owners never tow or only tow short distances.
Some will say range is a problem, that they can't do a 1000 or whatever miles between pumps, but very few bladders can handle that anyway. I never drive more than 3 hours without stopping.

Love your work Tommy. But I can’t help but notice how the truck looks like Tommy Boy doing Ballet. Even left a mark.
Good point
What people never mention is your house uses about 17-20kW a day and your Tesla uses 20-100kW a night. Your power bill 3-5x higher.
I'm certain Tesla could program the motors to hill hold without applying the brakes. I bet it will come with a future update.
Maybe. Motor stall will heat them up extremely fast. For occasional use it would work well.
@andrewt9204 I use hold in VFD applications all the time without issue, and without cooling. Tesla has liquid cooling for its inverters, motors and batteries.
Cybertruck has an optional air compressor which you chose to not have, to air up the tires.
Good to see it do offroad things. Instead of being a grocery getter!
You got that right!
Best offroad Cybertruck video yet. Thanks!
The CyberTruck redeems herself!! Yeah!! Love this truck!!
It must be nice to have something you buy get better after you buy it. Even though you prepaid for these features.
Most vehicles just get progressively worse after purchase. To have more features added after purchase must be at least somewhat refreshing
Until they take those features away or it becomes a subscription service. You know it's coming. That's why I'll admire it from a distance.
It’s amazing what a software update can do! Imagine how much better it will be in a year - once they collect more data to make more improvements off roading!
Data should have been collected during R&D instead of using paying costumers for R&D.
@@TonyStone3000 data was collected during development - it’s why they had many Release Candidate CyberTrucks on the road way before they launched the “Foundation” series - data still is being collected. You never stop collecting data, especially after you ship a product lol. The hardware items that weren’t usable on day one, like the locking differentials should have been there on day one and I fully agree. This software we are just now seeing was likely in development before it even launched. Which is why I am excited to see what they come up with in a year after they have sufficient data from their customers.
I saw a General Lee Tesla Cybertruck today at Fort Campbell, KY. Strangest thing that I’ve ever seen. Wish that these comments would let me post pictures.
If im not mistaken that may have been Kid Rock's 😂
Great job Tommy! Thanks for going back out with the new “software” upgrade. Pretty amazing. You look like your dad more and more everyday.
Usually happens with peoples kids lol. But ya Tommy is doing awesome last few years on TH-cam . I think car content only is holding him back . He could def be a streamer
Why is anyine driving on tires at 50+ psi your recommended tire pressure from factory is on your door jam and normal trucks run 35 psi. Hearing 40 psi on rocks hurts alot in my brain thats like 100 psi on ice not good
Please do a long offroad trail to test range difference between pavement and dirt.
Is there any chance that you can do same path in real time with the Cybertruck, and a 1500 ZR2, Tremor, or equivalent Ram to make a real-world comparison? Anything like that coming soon?
I'm curious how much battery you used doing the off-roading and the sand running?
There are little adjustable step down converters (good for 200-300W) you could install in your car compressor or make an adapters cable, ore use the 120/240V outlet. The tesla doesn't share it's built in compressor?
This is excellent feedback for the Tesla engineers. A couple days from now they will push a software update to improve any opportunity identified.
BTW, FSD 12.5 will be “pushed” to the Cybertruck. 🤷♂️ It just keeps getting better!
You guys need to do an experiment to determine just how much a tire contact patch increases when "Aired down" to lower pressures. I really think the contact patch gains is very very little with lower pressures...a myth-busting discovery is in order.
YEAAHHHH! The old farts in the balcony from the Muppet Show are gone. The son with no bias and a CT with off roading software and you get an honest review.. Thanks appreciate the effort!!
Very very good update that did the whole trick for all those that wanted to run off road this will bring so many cyber truck owners out to the trails 😅
should get yourself a milwaukee air compressor, rather than a 12v one.
Or a co2 tank. Oh ya , everyone needs electricity these days.
@@96kylar Storing energy as compressed air is underrated!
@@JahyMoonwalkerco2 is a gas
Gas is fine. But 120v is fine as well. You are carrying a massive battery.
I recently got the M18 compressor. It's amazing.
I think the scatch looks good on it-fits the design language of the truck.
Great review. Too bad this won’t generate as many clicks and likely no automotive journalists will share this. Jalopnik or Reddit won’t discuss this. But the fact you did it anyway is awesome!
11:54 Inevitable due to the sway bars, only way is to get some disconnecting ones.
