You just don't know how glad I am to hear all this man the crusaders was something in their days even they call himself a jazz crusaders way back when I just love this song way back home scratch man it's just oh it just brings so many memories
Born in 1983, the first time I listened to this song was in 2001 at Atteridgevile , South African . My late uncle Bra Rocks Ramodike introduced me to Jazz. Part of the induction was this song. I never looked back. This is bigger than music. WAY BACK HOME.
We played this song at my dad’s funeral a few weeks ago. This is the first time I’ve listened to it since that day. I was scared of finally accepting. I miss you dad.
I love this music. When I hear this it reminds me of yester year when we went to clubs to enjoy music and fun and laughter with friends. There was no threat of violence ,just a relaxed atmosphere with some real soothing sounds. I miss these days.
I was sixteen in 1981 when I heard this music over the radio. During those times radio was the most mode of communication in South Africa. I used to play the song on my cassettes player. I like the way Mr Henderson is introducing the band members. The sexophone by Wilton Felder is amazing. Rest in peace guys. I am Molefe Masombuka from South africa.
My boys. A jazz supergroup. My 1st jazz album. Way back home with the intros always makes me 😭 Rest in peace to the ones that are no longer with us, for you are at home.
Okay I’ll admit it. It was 1975. I was on a 30 day leave from the Navy visiting family in Sacramento, California. I walked through the door of my favorite Aunts house, and what was playing but this newly released album by the Crusaders. I knew of them before but not quite like this. This, this was different. Well, let’s say I’ve had a love affair with The Crusaders ever since. Thank goodness good music can never die. ~ Peace
Are you kidding me? I have seen the Crusaders in their prime, and Wilton Felder's Sax playing made me weep like a little baby! So much soul, jesus you had to have seen them live and with Larry Carlton..
So I am 24 years oldfrom New Zealand never ever heard this song before, just 5 years ago my father-in-law introduced me to this song and i just love it so much, the sax, the piano, its just so captivating and soothing, i whistle it most days and it always makes me smile and feel good about music because this is real music ❤
I am a staunch lover of this Group especially Joe Sample (may his Soul find eternal peace). every-time I listen to this track I get filled with the nostalgic memory of my Childhood in Mahikeng.
Thinking about my ma. She loved the "Jazz" Crusaders! and Joe Sample. Gave me my love for jazz. Forever grateful to God for my mom. I almost made it without shedding a tear. Great memories. Love you ma and thank you for classy taste.
Hey guys, I see a lot of well wishes for Wilton when he died but lets not forget Big Daddy. Wayne Henderson died last year and he will be greatly missed. If you look at who he worked with and produced, you will be blown away. He was a father to me more than my own father was. I miss you Big Daddy!
You were very fortunate to have lived there. Us South africans were far away but its rhythm reached us although we were so much far apart. Thank you for your comment Bro.
Every day I play this song before I go to bed. It is my every day routine. The Crusaders will remain best group. ever especially The song "Going back home. The song has become my anthem. Rest in peace guys. You will forever ever remain our heroes " May their soul's find eternal peace.
I was only 13 when my older sister made me listen to the Crusaders. She was my guardian, as our mum had left to seek a new life, and our dad was away working in Russia. I was raised, schooled , fed, and protected by our local Hells Angels chapter. My sister was only 18 years old at this time but not once did I feel a burden to her, or the Angels. They told me I could I be or do anything. The music genre doesn’t always fit with the sub culture. I’m 57 now, and my sister is 65. She still treats me like a baby, as do my extended family of Angels. Support your local 81, and they will support you. Peace. X

In the early 70's, I was about 12 years old when I heard this beautiful tune by the Crusaders. It was the tune that made me fall in love with smooth jazz.
This album came on the tail end of the 60's revolutionary period of don't trust the government, fight against the establishment mindset where people were simply getting tired of protests, the war in Vietnam had just come to a end, Nixon was being impeached, the impact of the civil rights legislation was beginning to stem the tide of the racism of the past for African Americans... This album and this very song revitalize Jazz in a manner that a more mainstream audience resonated with. This was called the Freedom Song for a great many social activists of that era... and in 1974 then it came out many people could passionately feel the pain, joy and hope of the future for those who had been suppressed for so very long and the beginning of a new dawn in the era of Blacks finally seeing real hope for the future... I was 14 years old but I remember vividly what this jam meant to so many not only in America but across the world. hey JGD! Yes, I looked around and couldn't find it posted so I took the liberty of uploading it on the day it was reported Joe Sample had passed. A classic indeed, and those were the days...it still sounds as hip as ever. Enjoy!

Thank you so much . This song and me go way back & come way forward. Love the introduction , toss up between Jerry butler's intro on the live version of ' Make it easy on yourself ' the arrangements on that album blow away the Radio versions. Especially his vocals on ' i dig you baby' can't find that anywhere. But believe you me took years for this song to comeback to TH-cam. And for that i tip my hat , and i don't even wear a hat.
Bliss. I've just realised after listening to this that I had always ignorantly thought of them as a fusion band (who I've loved since I was a kid), but this is so Blues drenched, as is Hard Times and even So Far away on this lp, that it is pure jazz, along the Bebop to Spiritual axis. They lighten up in the studio, and are their deeper natural jazzy selves in concert.
I am a serious crusaders fan in regards to there music. I knew Mr sample passed immediately, but I'm inexcusably lax as to Mr. Felder's passing. only one left. damn.

This brings back a lot of memories. My dad played the CD version of this album. I hadn’t thought about it before, but the late David Sanborn sounded a bit like saxophone player Wilton Felder.

When I get down I play this classic jam and I think of home, all you have to do is make it home, whether home is in the heart, your mind, a physical location, the arms of your lover, or the embrace of a friend. I think sometimes our Creator chooses moments or people to speak to us, to plant a beacon of hope. When I get down I play this classic jam and I think of home, all you have to do is make it home, whether home is in the heart, your mind, a physical location, the arms of your lover, or the embrace of a friend. As long as you make it home it doesn’t matter if the world makes sense because it’s going to be ok because you made it
home. I hope these incredible musicians knew how much they touched the world. This isn't music this a signal of hope.
They don't make music like this anymore....
From my hometown, H-TOWN!
Jazz is meant to played live, with a responsive audience like this. Wilton Felder's solo goes straight to the heart man. "The Crusaders please" :-D
Oh for those school days .... and friendships etc
