Not sure if he still lives in the Seattle area, but Stix Hooper moved in down the street from me when I was in middle school. I had no clue who he or the Crusaders were at the time, but luckily my friend really loved them. Not sure how he heard about Stix moving in, but was adamant that we knock on his door and welcome him to the neighborhood, despite my insistence we just leave him be. Stix answered the door in an apron (whatever he was cooking smelled amazing) and he was incredibly gracious to briefly talk shop with some young aspiring musicians even while he still had something on the stove. Strange but cherished memory especially as my appreciation for this group only grows with time. Thank you for posting!
That’s a great story and a great memory that you have obviously carried with you through your life. I think it was Eddie Harris who said that in order to be a good musician you must first be a good person. Your story definitely reveals what type of person Stix Hooper is. Thanks for sharing this story.
Fantastic set. I find myself coming back to this frozen moment in time, and it never gets old. Wish this was avail on Cd or LP. One by of my favorite bands of all time. What a group of musicians … I love the early straight ahead stuff all the way up to the late 70’s recordings. Unique sound and great compositions, … grooving to - 50 years later ! With all that talent, how about a call out for bassist Rupert Hughes killing it all over here - and on Watts Happening - look out ! Never knew of him before this … set the stage for Robert Popwell to follow I’d imagine. Thanks for posting this.
So blessed to have met Norbert "Stix" Hooper, a founding member, years back before I knew how great this band was, and to have several of their albums on vinyl since finding out how awesome this band was. True talent, real sweat, devoted musicians making music that outlasts fads and trends. Bless their souls.
RIP Joe, he will be missed by many, what a talent through the years. I was fortunate to see them on this very same tour, they put on a fantastic show, all these guys for $5 at the door!!!
I was in Jr. High from 1969 - 1972, and in High School from 1972 - 1975. So somewhere in in the early part of the 70's I heard The Crusaders and Passport on FM Radio, when FM Rock Stations were independently owned and quite few them (the DJ's who had free reign back then) would spin a lot of this type of Cool Progressive Jazz. FM Rock Stations went downhill in the late 70's early 80's. Thank God for TH-cam! This is where I listen to a lot of my favorite music. Very rare do I listen to the radio. Late at night just so I can go to sleep. AM Talk Radio or an FM Classical Station. (And I downloaded Ad Blocker, so no ads on TH-cam to bother me.)
For great follow to this period Crusaders, reference can be made to Joe Sample/Randi Crawford live album release. And for some good contrast, the Marvin Gaye: Live in Oakland (audio CD) has Sample on keys and it’s simply fantastic comping behind Gene Paige charts. Crusaders were the heaviest cats on the scene, for a helluva long time.
I love "Treat Me like Ya Treat Yaself" by Joe Sample. From the album "Pass the Plate"... RIP Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder. Ony drummer Stix Hooper is still alive. Thank you guys for a life spent offering good vibes to all of us.
IT'S GREAT TO HEAR THE VERY YOUNG "LARRY CARLTON"" ON GUITAR HERE! JOE SAMPLE HAD BEEN ON A SESSION IN L.A. AND LARRY JUST HAPPENED TO BE ON THAT SAME SESSION, AND WHEN JOE HEARD LARRY NOODLING AROUND ON HIS GUITAR, LOOSENING UP FOR THE SESSION,, JOE IMMEDIATELY HEARD HOW INCREDIBLE LARRY WAS. AND HE ASKED LARRY RIGHT THERE,, TO JOIN THE CRUSADERS!!! THE REST IS HISTORY!!!!
I JUST LOVE THE TROMBONE OF WAYNE HENDERSON AND THE PIANO OF JOE SAMPLE...GREAT STUFF...IF YOU PEOPLE HAVE TIME,... GO...NOW.. AND LISTEN TO THEIR "BEST TUNE"........LILIES OF THE NILE...WOW!!!! EXCELLENT!
This is what a really tight band sounds like live. These guys were one of the truly great fusion jazz groups, much underrated, but their early 70s work is unique. RIP Joe Sample and Wayne Henderson!
I think the personnel listing on this video is incorrect. Although Robert 'Pops' Popwell was the bassist for The Crusaders, you can distinctly hear Henderson naming Luther Hughes during the final song. Luther Hughes does list The Crusaders in his bio, so maybe a fill in that performance or tour? The original 1972 studio recording bassist was Chuck Rainey.
Yes, it is. He is also in a video from a TV show hosted by James Earl Jones from the same year. Misnamed as Max Bennett. He must have at least made this tour or maybe more in 73.
The group was sounding very good here but they got even better IMO, check out this from Soul Power the film of the Ali/Foreman concert in Zaire. They only play 1 song in the film but I'd love to hear the whole set. Someone out there has it. That was the best Crusaders lineup. th-cam.com/video/T4fXGopN2bw/w-d-xo.html

Unsung Heroes is just that - an unsung hero of a Crusaders album. Grows on you. Then never leave you.
What can i say, the music just takes you away

All bow down to Stix Hooper. Incredible. Him and Joe Sample were made for each other.
And Wilton Filder on Tenor Sax. Wayne Henderson on Trombone. Max Bennett on Electric Bass. Larry Carlton on Guitar
Hey, and don't forget RIP Wayne Henderson. He was the meaty timbre in the Crusaders, and some great compositions also. Thanks for sharing this.
RIp Wilton Felder underrated jazz and funk master
Seattle today... listening 35 years ago still got that same old feeling
We are so special.... look at us move...
RIP Joe, he will be missed by many, what a talent through the years. I was fortunate to see them on this very same tour, they put on a fantastic show, all these guys for $5 at the door!!!
Underrated jazz band. So Far Away was magical.

Awesome cool energy inducing beat. Luv it.
Put It Where You Want It... I just never get tired of that tune, such a groove!
My 82-year-old mother loves this song 😊😊❤️❤️
Did you know The average White band covered this song also with lyrics ❤️❤️❤️
Playing this for my son right now.. He says it never gets old!
Just unbelieveble. Loved the Crusaders but I never heard about this recording! Thanks for sharing!
And the studio version is just as awesome
When listening to the studio version so far away at time stamp 526 Wilton Felder blew me away and I've been in love with this record ever since
What a find...Love this band. Joe was a favorite of mine truthfully. Such feeling in his playing along with all the guys.
Wow, never realised this existed!
Many thanks for posting!
RIP Joe.
I've never seen this album in the stores or in their catalog. Great live session, love it. Classic Crusaders.
It's a well known bootleg. Do we still have bootlegs?
Soul Jazz at it's finest and funkiest. Laawee!

Larry Carlton is still around, too.
Carlton at around 18 mins asking and answering himself questions!Beautiful!!
This simply kicks ass. Listen to what a real band sounds like, live!
Joe Sample's keyboard playing really stands out in this live set and I for one really dig it.

This was at Paramount Nw I worked there at the time. Bless Up!!
🙏
RIP, Joe and Wilton...

So funky, sophisticated and true.
RIP Wilton Felder.
Good stuff!
My turn out to Jazz southern Comfort I was 12 ridin ever since now 2021.
49 years since this performance was released.
To today's generation : THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE MUSIC.....
Another wonderful live Crusaders album is "live under the sky" recorded 1983 in Japan.
I think they played on the Steely Dan LP AJA Classic Proffesional Musicians How bot that "Street Life"
Larry Carlton played in some steely Dan studio stuff, Great Guitar player !!!
I missed this show. I miss the 70's. Lots missing here I guess but no lack of Soul.
Fucking Awesome
@James Hama Still alive and kicking...and you?
I lived in LA in the seventies they were the bomb
They even had the the New York boiz
worried
west coast 1 east coast 0
❤️❤️❤️
"Watts Happening" is more like the type of thing that they played when they were originally called: 'The Jazz Crusaders'...... real jazzy stuff.....
60's sound may have been better than that of the 70's, and that's saying a lot because they came nicely in the 70's.
The real sound l ever heared

Great KUNKY Jazz! (Aren't the video search times listed way off though?
I'm a crusader junkie
this ish is heavy
Je sais, ce n'est pas de la soul à l'origine, mais moi (bibi) l'entend comme tel en fonction des zics. C'est mon oreille. ;) Bref, c'est un régal.
It says # 9. is So Far Away (14:56) not # 8. There should be 9. songs?
im really high right now
Me too
Joe Sample and Wilton Felder changed my life, Everything else will be put through a spiral spectrum. I love everyone that disagrees with me.
