When I was a boy of about 12 my father, a pianist, woke me at about 2 AM. Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson were on TV. Dad knew I was keen on the guitar and I always tried to participate in the Friday night jam sessions at our home. So, Dad got me up and the two of us sat in front of the B&W television and were mesmerized by the genius pouring from the tiny speaker.
That was my intro to Joe Pass and now, nearly 50 years later his musicianship still astounds me.
Thank you for posting this. I will watch it again and again. Whenever I see Joe Pass performing solo I am taken back to that night.

You are so fortunate to have had this musical connection with your dad. I did too. Our living room contained a grand piano and a Conn theater organ with full pedal board. A few evenings a month we'd play duets, mostly blues-based with lots of improvising. As I went through my mid-teens I experienced typical adolescent rebellion and would instigate lots of silly arguments. Our music sessions kept us from losing touch completely and by the time I turned 19 we were reconciled. I have no doubt music enriched our relationship and might well have saved it.

    ahhh...
I've seen Joe a bunch, particularly around this time.
    Never with Ella, though.
Last time was especially unforgettable - with Sarah Vaughan at the Blue Note, Greenwich Village NYC, 1989.
Was newlywed, my wife had been raised on classical music and ballet, and she was so blown away (she's a very accomplished classical pianist and ballerina). She loved that I turned her on to jazz... most memorable jazz evening was a table for 2 at the jazz café on the corner of our street and Broadway, practically at arm's length from McCoy Tyner... I saved up $ for a month for that - and wow, was it ever worth it! Changed her life!
Music has given us all so much; we should never take it for granted, we are fortunate. Joe shares the top shelf with the greatest of the greats. I'm obviously a guitarist... 'nuff said.
    Peace and Alohas, y'all

I feel that Joe can have one of two effects on current and prospective guitar players. The first being to run straight for your guitar and sit down and play, and the second one being for one to go "oh, hell to the no!" and never touch a guitar again in frustration of how brilliant he is and how effortless he makes it look!

I love it at 2:53. Check this out--
After "Virtuoso Joe" dazzles us, as usual, with his incredible, fluid, bebop, saxophone-like lines with ease, WITH HIS EYES CLOSED!
He gets surprised by the camera close-up but, like a true and rare pro, doesn't miss a beat, or a chord, or a lick, and he cracks a sweet, warm smile and just keeps WAILING, folks --Whoa!
Joe, we sure miss you, and thanks for everything you did for music and art. Your legacy will live FOREVER.
Most of all, thanks for your courageous example of conquering your heroin addiction to deliver us "the goods" (as in, excellent and timeless music) for many, many years while you were around on this here planet Earth.
Thanks, Joe, for giving me your precious time and energy after your live solo concert performance to answer my question about which chord you used on your composition, "Two Track Trip", from the obscure Guitar Player Magazine record you recorded a half a decade earlier at that point.
I could tell, Joe, were tired after the performance giving it your all --and, most of all, of the usual, "You're great, Joe!" fawning fan stuff by all the people who mobbed you on stage after the gig because you could have told me to "Get lost!"
    But NO!
Joe, you calmly thought for a moment, --and I'll never forget this, --you told me the EXACT chord, so I could understand, --being a novice at that point, --in how to figure out what it was by your straight forward explanation of Jazz Music theory in a just a few minutes. WOW!
People, I stand before all of YOU, --past, present and future to say, NO money could buy, and, NOTHING, could compare to those few minutes with the sadly late, but great Joe Pass.
Joe Pass, may you be firing up that ole Jazz bandstand where ever you are! We LOVE you, Joe, and always will! ;_; [then wipes tears from eyes]
    Peace.

Joe Pass is marvelous to behold and listen to, he has so unique a sound and style, the "mother of smooth"... I do have a dozen Joe Pass old vinyls here... but I must confess, that I never could make him one of my musical favourites, because of that cool smoothness, almost no dynamics in the music, and somehow it just keeps on and on... You can't tell one tune from the next, unless it's a very famous one. But the moment Ella steps in... the duet is so damn good.... amazing.

I graduated from high school in '75. I only started to get how good stuff like this really was. However, even a few years later, NOBODY I knew would have gone to a jazz concert with me. I lost out on so much. I should have called my older cousin in St. Louis - he was aware of everything that had to do with great jazz and blues. This is too good for words.; so was he.

  • @HarryHipster

Due to my jazz-loving parents I came to see and enjoy this marvelous duo some years later in the 80's at a very similar concert in my hometown Düsseldorf. I assume it to be one of their last visits of Germany. Ella was nearly blind and had week legs due to her diabetis, but what a voice she still had! This remarkably wide range from tender to sharp, from sweet to expressive, from playful to groovy was still shining through. And what can one not like about Joe's playing? His skills are impeccable. Few people know that even a metal guitarist like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath quoted Joe to be his idol. Ella and Joe, they both were undisputed masters and icons of their category. I am thankful for having seen them on stage during their lifetime. And thanks also for the upload.

The warmth, the generosity, the interpretations so eloquently played out, it is as if they are sitting right here playing only for me. With Ella Fitzgerald, the talent is simply stunning buttery goodness and then you get not just a guy on a guitar but you get Joe Pass and his unequalled ability to somehow be the entire orchestra on one instrument. What gifts they both shared with us all. Probably one of the best live jazz performances ever, for my own list.
