My all-time favorite quartet!! My favorite bass player, my favorite drummer, my favorite tenor saxophonist obviously, and my favorite pianist sometimes!! I can't decide if I like him more than Herbie or Monk or Bud Powell. They're ALL my favorites. It's cool that Coltrane decided to put their separate names on the album cover instead of just the John Coltrane Quartet.
A great musician Trane, he went through all the styles of jazz with great knowledge of cause and humility, from romantic ballads to the cry of pain and awareness of the evils on this planet.
A great and very unique Coltrane album. Coltrane plays the melodies only, no improvising. I saw an interview with Larry Carlton talking about this. Larry says that he was told from reliable sources that this was because "Coltrane didn't like his reed that day"!
'Trane recorded this LP to prove a point...well more than one point!.......to his critics. Many thought he couldn't play a ballad this proved otherwise , it also showed his respect of the jazz tenor tradition grounded in Hawkins, Prez, Webster, Wardell Grey, Don Byas etc. and ....he does improvise on this set but no extended solos.
I’ve been looking for this at the vinyl shops, no luck. Glad it’s here. So much to learn from as I play along, phrase by phrase, trying to get it right. In my own way of course.
Though Alto and Soprano saxos are not my kind of saxos (baritone saxos as Gerry Mulligan being the further I accept in such tones) , if I want to hear some good Coltrane cd, this is the one. In what Tenor Saxos concern, as the Coltrane's one, Ben Webster and Stan Getz are my prefered ones. Am far from liking Coltrane's tone pitch. But this is totally on the Mainstream Jazz Line and is an awarded cd. So, you'll find here what one expects from the best jazz. 🤔👍🎶❤️🤗🙏
Naisu!
I drove a cab in New York many years ago. Driving along the river, late at night, listening to 50's and 60's jazz puts one in sync with the city.

This is the album that opened up my ears to jazz almost 50 years ago.
11/30/24 - I'd only ever heard his name before now. Honest to Pete - I melted in the first measure!
coletrane is a master with the sax
A great beauty this music due to the undeniable talent of John Coltrane and his musicians.Marvellous really! It remains in our sensitivity for ever.
INCREDIBLE!!! That's the only word that I can say about this album.

Just incredibly beautiful!
Coltrane was a genius.

still love his music!!

I saw McCoy Tyner down in Baltimore Billie Holiday's old place. He wouldn't shake your hand-his fingers? Too Risky!😊

Pure American Magic
Nivel …….My lord ❤
the only Jazz that I can listen is John Coltrane and Vagif Mustafazade’s
Here because of Murakami's "Norweigan Wood".

Sage Francis - personal journals.
Atmosphere - lucy ford or god loves ugly
Denzel Washington should play John Contrane in a biopic movie
🥀🌱😀
I have original vinyls of Trane! Bought a record player too!
It’s all in the subtle off timings of everyone.. & just nice sound recording over all
