As a south african, I would like to say this song made us go through the difficult times of segregation in our country. I learned to understand that we were similar about how our brothers and sisters went through like us around the world although we were some thousands kilometres apart. Everytime when I listen to this song, it makes me cry.
Absolutely Molefe! It's still an "anthem" for me. I've been playing it quite a bit lately, as I ponder on the pain our fallen heroes must feel when they look, from their gravesides, at the happenings in our country of late. We'll overcome this too.
Just gone New Years Day 2024 and this song takes me back to high school in the early 70s. The nostalgia spectrum from exhilarating to sadness. Absent loves and friends with almost a foreboding of the future. Stay well everyone.
The first lick that Wilton Felder plays here is the purest and most fabulous sound I have ever heard come out of a tenor horn. Gets me every time. You've got to crank this WAY up!
The Crusaders produced so many signatures sounds, but this was indeed their anthem. And Joe Sample was at the heart of just about all of it. Rest in peace. Rest in glory.
We need a revitalization of jazz club in South Africa especially for the young talent. Standardbank Joy of Jazz but accessible to the masses. In Soweto, Spruit or Tembisa. Talent unnoticed 🎷🎸🎹🎤
My Dad introduced me to the Jazz Crusaders. I introduced the Crusaders to the next generation in our family and we all have love. Three Generations one family. Thanks so much and RIP Joe, Wilton! Thanks Crusaders!
This song makes me think about the stories my grandmother used to tell us about Uncle Wilton, Joe, Styx, and Wayne using the car to appear in dive clubs because that was the only place they would perform, and the food they cooked to make sure they weren't hungry because they couldn't eat anywhere either. GOD's peace Joe!
This song helped to get me thru high school and college. I am forever grateful that God put this song in the hearts of those who created it and shared it with the World. Thank you God. Thank you Joe Sample. Thank Wilton Felder. Thank you Wayne Henderson. Thank you Stix Hooper.
I'm sad so many that I can't describe, such a group, such music, you can't hear today, and that is music that touches so deeply in the center of the heart and soul, what kind of masters they were, each one individually, their eternal glory.
Seen the crusaders about 40 times. They always played is song last at every show. Wilton would always bring down the house with this baby. RIP Joe ,Wayne, and the Texas Twister 🙏.
Summer of 1982, Montreaux Jazz Festival. I was with fellow high school musicians, had never heard of the Crusaders. Our band director made it compulsory for us to attend their concert. Before the concert began, we all mocked these “old dudes”, thinking their playing was going to bore us out of our skulls. Wrong! About three bars into the first tune we were all hooked. Amazing, brilliant musicians! We all came back to the States and bought up all the Crusaders records (yes, records) we could find. Gratitude to Wilton Felder, Sticks Hooper & Joe Sample (and the rest).
SO SAD TO HEAR THE PASSING OF MR. JOE SAMPLE. ONE OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF THE JAZZ CRUSADERS, AND THE CRUSADERS. REST IN PEACE JOE. THE JAZZ CRUSADERS STILL LIVES.
💖 One Love, playing with One Mind+Lady's and Gentle Men! This is the ultimate Music of all time and everytime i play "Way Black Home! I feel good, even at 80yrs! What great and fantastic set's of hard working group are these? Blessed be God ⛪✝️🎇
This is beautiful, I teared up listening to this. Am sure alot of people can attach there struggles to this song. I have come way far and going back home.
Today I'm the lonest and saddest human being when my brother 's time was up my mother used to play most old most old school jazz and Way back home became my refuge and Compas , I could swing my head and everything seemed Alright and when my my mom time was up this song help keep it together. To the Crusaders Family Please accept my Sincere CONDOLENCE TO JOE SAMPLE: R.I.P
These brothers are one of the reasons I love and still play music to this day. The soul music of the Crusaders is deeply rooted in the black experience in America.
Joe Sample was the best! This song brings a tear to my eyes when I hear it. It brings back such good memories of seeing the Crusaders live. RIP Joe, from your biggest fan!
RIP Wilton Felder: Co-Founder of the Jazz Crusaders, saxophonist, bassist, and songwriter. He, like Joe Sample, also passed away at age 75, September 27, 2015.
Putting these men together was and can only be a glorious act of a knowing loving GOD thank you lord for the precious gift called the crusaders. I bet there was a amazing party when you all got back home. (Heaven!!!!)
I was a kid, listening to everything, literally, everything. But I was looking for the right one, the one that matches me. And heard the Crusaders music, that was it. And my life is ending slowly but surely. Thanks to them, it was unforgettable.
Man this is too much in one song Wilton, Joe, Stix, and Wayne have put together a materful track by the worlds best four piece bands in time. As we journey through life some how some way we will find our way back home
This song and "Put it Where You Want It" were the first two songs that turned me on to the Crusaders in the early 70's and I still have the albums(back then they were about $5.00 each).
Darn. I thought I knew music, but I never knew Wilton Felder wrote this wonderful song. I always associated it with Jr. Walker. So glad to be enlightened.
LOL! I feel you. I love this song as it reminds me of my father - what an amazing and wonderful man he is who has taught me how to appreciated good music. God bless my dad..
This is “right up there” next to my favorite rendition that was also done by a great Soul 🎷man by the name of Jr. Walker…. I’m sure both he and Winston Felder are trading licks of this song in Heaven 😇🙏🏽👍🏽✊🏽
The geration of SA since 2011 I thought and made to listen to this song in particular by my good friend Phakimele Mohoto, we friends and Comrade's at the time. We had a battle of Whisky 🥃 the two of us of Ball's and from that day till today 😂 it's never the same. You see that friend of my we used to discuss political matters with 😊and every time we discuss I'm talling you we will never agree to disagree 😂. How I love this soul❤ 🥃🥃🥃 Cheers to us my friend 🥃
July 2020 This is a tribute to Our Ancestors! Makes me think of my childhood, going down south in the summer to visit family and all the family members that have gone on to glory.
This is probably the best thing I have ever seen or heard. Joe Sample was the musical backdrop to my youth and for that alone, I feel truly privileged.
As a south african, I would like to say this song made us go through the difficult times of segregation in our country. I learned to understand that we were similar about how our brothers and sisters went through like us around the world although we were some thousands kilometres apart. Absolutely Molefe!
It's still an "anthem" for me.
I've been playing it quite a bit lately, as I ponder on the pain our fallen heroes must feel when they look, from their gravesides, at the happenings in our country of late.

I'm a Sax Man as well. I agree his first few notes just per perfect phrasing tone and feel. Just excellent!!!
The Crusaders produced so many signatures sounds, but this was indeed their anthem. And Joe Sample was at the heart of just about all of it. Rest in peace. Rest in glory.
I second you sir👏🏾💓🎷
One of the Dj's once said: 'Once you hear this song, it will play in your ears the whole week' And it does for sure. Its a masterpiece
Yes true you can keep humming it the whole week.
Indeed
It is true
True he was right indeed🎷🎹🎼🎶💓
We need a revitalization of jazz club in South Africa especially for the young talent. Standardbank Joy of Jazz but accessible to the masses. In Soweto, Spruit or Tembisa. Talent unnoticed 🎷🎸🎹🎤
My favorite Joe Sample, Wilton Felder performance. May these brothers Rest in Peace.
My Dad introduced me to the Jazz Crusaders. I introduced the Crusaders to the next generation in our family and we all have love. Three Generations one family. Thanks so much and RIP Joe, Wilton! Thanks Crusaders!
The first time I attended the Crusaders live was in Moretele in Mamelodi in the late 1990s with Caiphus Semenya, Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa
This song makes me think about the stories my grandmother used to tell us about Uncle Wilton, Joe, Styx, and Wayne using the car to appear in dive clubs because that was the only place they would perform, and the food they cooked to make sure they weren't hungry because they couldn't eat anywhere either.
