Imported in 1969, this Powerset had many special features and facilities. This was due to the fact that these trains were imported for special tourist train journeys. Its aim was to provide maximum comfort for those engaged in such luxury travel. These train sets were manufactured entirely in Japan and imported to Sri Lanka.
The total number of compartments in one train set (including engine compartments) is five. The special feature of this train is that there are drive compartments with front and rear engines for each train set. (All previous power packs had only one drive compartment with an engine and the other an unmanned drive compartment). With two engines, this train was able to run successfully even on the upcountry route. So one train set had two engine compartments and three passenger compartments. The maximum number of passengers per seat was 100.
All compartments were air-conditioned and featured a special dining room compartment for long-distance passengers and a special kitchen for food preparation. It was also the first power train to be brought to Sri Lanka as a power train with "INTERNAL CORRIDORS" so that the compartments could travel to each other from inside the train. Also, all the doors in the cabins were equipped with a vacuum system for the driver to open and close.
Other facilities included a music system for the compartments, an audio system for listening to songs, etc. The train was pre-booked (whole train) and operated in such a way that it could be used for tours.
It is the only train set with engine number 718-719 for the blue AIRPORT EXPRESS train running between Katunayake Airport and Colombo Fort. The train was first introduced to Colombo from Katunayake Airport to guests at the 2010 IIFA Awards. The S5 train was repaired and used for this purpose and was later operated for a period of time to provide services to passengers arriving at the airport. The train is currently operated by Airport & Aviation Services. It can be booked through the company for travel from the airport to various destinations in the country (for foreign tourists).
The other train with engines 717 and 720 collided with another train near the Wilwatta railway station in 1970, destroying the power supply engine in compartment No. 720 on one side. So that part of it was repaired and converted into an engine-free drive cabin, which for some time was used for driving on Non Mountain roads.

මේක ගැන එකක් කිව්වෙ නැහැ . මේ S5 හිතාචි දුම්රියේ අභ්‍යන්තර මැදිරි මාරුවීමට ඇති දොරටු (internal corridors ) සියල්ල සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ස්ව්‍යංක්‍රීයව දොරටුව අභියස සිටගත් විට් ස්වයංක්‍රීයව විවෘත වෙනව. ඊළග මැදිරියේ දොරටුව අභියස පසුකල පසු ස්වයංක්‍රීයව වැසෙනව. මේ දුම්රිය 1970 උඩරට ධාවනය වූ මංගල ගමනේදී මමත් මගේ සහෝදරියන් දෙදෙනාත් පියාගේ වරප්‍රසාද වලට ලැබෙන පාස් මගින් බණ්ඩාරවෙල දුම්රිය ස්ථානය දක්වා ගමන් කලා. මේක සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම වායුසමීකරණය කල දුම්රියක්. මේකේ මැදිරි උණුසුම් කිරීමේ හැකියාවත් මුල්කාලෙදි තිබුණ. මේ S5 දුම්රියේ එන්ජිමට නැග්ගම හරියට ගුව්න් යානයක කොක් ෆිට් එක ව්ගේ. තව එකක් තමා මේ දුම්රියයේ එන්ජින්වල ශබ්දය ඉතා සුමටයි. මගේ පියා බදුල්ලෙ සහන දුම්රියස්ථානාධිපති ලෙස සේවය කල කාලේ මම බදුල්ලේ සිට බණ්ඩාරවෙල ට පාසල් ආවෙ. බොහෝ වෙලාවට මෙම දුම්රියේ සතියකට දෙවරක් එන්ජිමේ ගමන් කිරීම්ට අවස්ථාව ලැබෙනව.

Why don't you arrange S 5. As intercity train in between Negombo Colombo Fort or similar route for office travelers even little higher ticket fare as most of willing to go with these train facility. It is very sad to see S 5 idelling at Dematagoda yard

Still i remember when I was a little child in 1976 s 5 crash happened near wadurawa station i went to see the incident with my father and still i remember name s of both drivers one s name is aariyadasa he lost both of his legs and other one s name is silva he lost one of his leg engine was perfectly directoryed but both of drivers miracleasly survived
