One of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done is taken a motorcycle engine completely apart, modified it (especially the heads, and put it all back together. Very gratifying to then have it start on the first try!
I would agree that experience is everything when you are working to tight tolerances and aiming for perfection. And it shows in the cleanliness / pride of Mr Tyrrell's Workshop.
Every new video in this series is a joy to watch. I grew up with a dad in the aircraft business, restoring and maintaining a fleet of DC 3's. The "hanger" had a full engine shop, machine shop, metal shop and so forth, and as a kid in the 50's and 60's, my dad would take me to the airport in the evenings or weekends for projects. The care, and special knowledge needed, for work like this is very nostalgic and familiar, although the Lamborghini's V-12 is nothing like the big Pratt & Whitney 14 cylinder radial engines, the craftsmanship required is the same. One of the best series on You Tube, IMHO.
I am a relative newcomer to bother these channels RF and I said aloud while I was watching this that these videos are some of the best things on youtube, period.
Such passion for engineering perfection. “If it feels right, it is right”. I do hope we never lose these skills. Electric just won’t cut it mechanically. And then there is the sound! Can’t wait. Great job Ian & Harry. Thank you.
Just fantastic. These guys should be on television ! It’s the best car show by far. What a garage ( museum almost) Ian Tyrell has. It’s an absolute joy to listen to the conversations about restorations and seeing the absolute passion about they both have about these supercars . If you ever need fancy having my classic Saab 900T16S in the garage as a charitable project ( because I don’t have Harry’s wealth) I would be delighted to lend it to you!!

Edge of my seat here in New England watching this intently. Just so you gentleman know, had you filmed an hour and talked about the motor's details accordingly, I would have been doubly happy to view it. My mild condolences to Harry for not thinking to get a 13th piston for his desk. This is very enjoyable stuff.
I could watch this all day long every day, between watching Harry just beaming with joy like a little kid and Iain with that Rolex diver placing a 50+ year crank into that block explaining the benefits of graphite lubricant it just left me smiling. This is what cars are about, the history and watching three older gentlemen maintain the legacy of these cars. I CANNOT WAIT to see Harry rowing through the gears after break-in and the look on his face.

Tyrrell's workshop/car heaven is just a couple of miles down the road from me, pass it many a time. Wonderful to see the magic that goes in here, proper engineering at work. A pleasure to see an engine rebuilt and explained in this manner. Listening to the conversation between two enthusiasts, without OTT music and time lapse. I think I prefer these to the car reviews. Order for me is 1: The Espada rebuild; 2: Harry's mad road trips; 3: the reviews
I particularly like the "old school professionalism" of Ian Tyrrell, no fancy stuff just good old hands on feel, something that's lacking in many motor repair workshops today.

I was about to make a comment about Iain not protecting his subby with either glove or sleeve. I then realised that he wears the watch in order to tell the time, not to be a status symbol. I have a great deal of time for this gentleman.

I have a GMT I treat the same way, it's my tough-as-nails watch that I never worry about getting knocks, which is why I bought it in the first place some decades ago, just like Iain did with his sub. When we bought them it was because Rolex represented great engineering, good design and you knew it would last several generations. They were also sort of good value back then too. Not now, though!
@@harrysgarage Quite, I'm sure that was their intended purpose, and pretty much the only consideration in manufacture was that they just kept ticking! I'm from a slightly younger generation so I've never known Rolex to be anything other than damn good but damn expensive. So my choice was Omega, my first Seamaster still serves me well, 19 years on. That said, Omega are creeping in the same direction, to replace my £1k watch with a modern equivalent would cost £3-4k. Way of the world, I guess. Cheers for the reply Harry, all the best.

I know the basics of how engines work, but was more interested in driving cars in my youth, but now I am enjoying watching it all happen in front of my eyes, and the tips from the mechanics are obviously from years of experience. This channel is so much more than the 0-60 times that 99% of channels focus on today.
I love Harry and his channel. I've watched every episode and nothing comes close to this quality of upload. I did get the impression today though, that if Harry could, he would probably marry his engine block. The look of love in his eyes as he looks after his little baby is something special.
You really should have bought that thirteenth piston, Harry! Beautiful! and 1mm piston rings? I'd need about 10 for each piston if I was putting them on. Iain amuses me sometimes, with 3 thou clearance on an 82.5 mm piston. Absolutely riveting video. It's good to know that craftsmen still exist.
The quickest 25 min ever. Iain i would modify the Rev gauge so when it Revs to 6000 rpm its shows 8000 rpm. I am sure Harry would be happy. Only complaint is the video should be 8 hours long. So interesting . Thanks.

Well done on the pistons, Harry! I've used Nick ARIAS' pistons since 1978, he custom made them for me for the MV Agusta motorcycle prototypes I was tasked to engineer and build for Count Corrado Agusta. When the bikes were finished the Twin-stage Turbo Bike was the most powerful motorcycle engine of the day. We were pioneers as well in that we plasma sprayed the piston heads to insulate them from combustion heat and drive more heat into the turbos....
Dow make a black plastic primer paint for bonding in plastic windows (Betawipe), gives the black edge to hide the adhesive and promotes adhesion. I used it on the side screens of my Ultima GTR.
I can honestly watch Mr. Tyrell take apart & rebuild an engine all day. Such precision and attention to detail! Whatever he charges, his workmanship shows it's worth EVERY PENNY!! Subscribing to his channel to watch the Muira preservation.
I just love the dialogue between Harry and Iain. I often have debates with people when I explain that as a mechanic in the 70's I rarely used a torque wrench, more about 'feel', a practice I still follow. Glad to hear my view is shared by Iain. It’s Sunday afternoon and it’s p.....g down with rain and I can’t get my weekend car out of the garage, the dog wants a walk and I’m thinking that this day is all but lost....and then another Harrys garage video hits town .......all is now good with the world.
I wish that there was a love button , but can only like. This took me right back to 1980, my 1st engine rebuild. My 1st car too, only a 74 M'reg Hillman Avenger.....I can assure you as much care and attention was given to that one. I learnt much from knocking out my mains and a service set of mains and end bearings. With much advice from Townsend Brothers in Brumagem. Carried over to completion and complete success. Adore your Espada, keep looking after your absolute 70's icon!

Yet another excellent video, thank you. However a little surprised that there was no use of a 360 degree engine stand. Makes life a lot easier to work around the block, torque settings and piston Insertions as well as limiting crank and bearing contamination. As some may know just a thread or grain of grit between the crank and bearing will easily bind. Please dont get me wrong, these guys know what there doing, I was just as tad surprised that's all. But great video again guys.🤗

Watching this makes me think back to the days when the first quartz watches came out and their accuracy and simplicity was touted as the future of time pieces. Just as now the electric vehicles being praised for their superior power and mechanical simplicity as the death to the combustion engine. Hopefully. as in the time piece world, there will be a renaissance in the appreciation for the beauty elegance and mechanical marvel that is the combustion engine. An electric car will never have the soul of a proper combustion driven machine. Absolutely beautiful!!
Well no one is wearing mechanical watches anymore, its either smart phone or electronic watch. The same will happen to the ICE system. In 10-20 years the roads will be packed with EVs, and a few petrol heads like Harry will still be driving their Morgans and Miuras.

Maybe electric is not the way to go. But how can anything really replace that beautiful Lamborghini V12.

Well a good experienced tech has "finger feel" and you know when stuff is tight enough. Only in modern engines has bolt stretch and metallurgy really made it where you cant just feel your way through torquing bolts. Im not saying you know what 160ftlbs feels like but you know when things in steel or alloy are tight enough
Marco, as a part owner of a 92 year old R-R Phantom owned in the family 55 years , whilst rebuilding the engine' on a budget ' which took me years and learnt so much from a late , old school brilliant engineer like Iain, he explained why the spanners in the tool kit were all of the ' correct ' ( short ! ) length to avoid excessive leverage.The 7/16" cylinder head retaining bolts are many , long and yieldy , and I was terrified at the thought of shearing one which would have been catastrophic but was reassured after this practice was used.2000 miles later, the engine is running beautifully with no problems !.
Wonderfull, watching an engine strip down & rebuild,awe brings back so many memories,as a mechanic in the 1960's,although been in a small two bay garage,& working on mainly ,4 cyl cars, Ford Anglia's Austin's,Mini's ect,then the attachment of starting a rebuild engine,Magic 👍👍👍👍

Why will electric not cut it mechanically? Electric motors in general are much stronger than their ICE counterparts.

Looks like an old 5513, from back when they used to be bought new as tool watches rather than Instagram jewellery with inflated prices!

Well done on the pistons, Harry! I've used Nick ARIAS' pistons since 1978, he custom made them for me for the MV Agusta motorcycle prototypes I was tasked to engineer and build for Count Corrado Agusta. When the bikes were finished the Twin-stage Turbo Bike was the most powerful motorcycle engine of the day. We were pioneers as well in that we plasma sprayed the piston heads to insulate them from combustion heat and drive more heat into the turbos....

Dow make a black plastic primer paint for bonding in plastic windows (Betawipe), gives the black edge to hide the adhesive and promotes adhesion. I used it on the side screens of my Ultima GTR.

I just love the dialogue between Harry and Iain. I often have debates with people when I explain that as a mechanic in the 70's I rarely used a torque wrench, more about 'feel', a practice I still follow. Glad to hear my view is shared by Iain. Iain, I will be catching up on your own TH-cam videos, a winter project!

It’s Sunday afternoon and it’s p.....g down with rain and I can’t get my weekend car out of the garage, the dog wants a walk and I’m thinking that this day is all but lost....and then another Harrys garage video hits town .......all is now good with the world.
I wish that there was a love button , but can only like. This took me right back to 1980, my 1st engine rebuild. My 1st car too, only a 74 M'reg Hillman Avenger.....I can assure you as much care and attention was given to that one. I learnt much from knocking out my mains and a service set of mains and end bearings. With much advice from Townsend Brothers in Brumagem. Carried over to completion and complete success. Adore your Espada, keep looking after your absolute 70's icon!

However a little surprised that there was no use of a 360 degree engine stand. Makes life a lot easier to work around the block, torque settings and piston Insertions as well as limiting crank and bearing contamination. As some may know just a thread or grain of grit between the crank and bearing will easily bind.
Please dont get me wrong, these guys know what there doing, I was just as tad surprised that's all. But great video again guys.🤗

Watching this makes me think back to the days when the first quartz watches came out and their accuracy and simplicity was touted as the future of time pieces. Just as now the electric vehicles being praised for their superior power and mechanical simplicity as the death to the combustion engine. Hopefully. as in the time piece world, there will be a renaissance in the appreciation for the beauty elegance and mechanical marvel that is the combustion engine.
An electric car will never have the soul of a proper combustion driven machine. Absolutely beautiful!!
Well no one is wearing mechanical watches anymore, its either smart phone or electronic watch. The same will happen to the ICE system. In 10-20 years the roads will be packed with EVs, and a few petrol heads like Harry will still be driving their Morgans and Miuras.
Harry & Iain, you are nothing short of geniuses. To talk about that automotive artwork so interestingly that my wife has sat through it all, totally enthralled! That says everything. Harry you could make the Yellow Pages sound interesting so thank you & keep it going whether it's the garage, testing cars or your farm, we love it all.That one you did with Lord JCB about hydrogen powered engines was incredible & so enlightening. Maybe electric is not the way to go. But how can anything really replace that beautiful Lamborghini V12.

Well a good experienced tech has "finger feel" and you know when stuff is tight enough. Only in modern engines has bolt stretch and metallurgy really made it where you cant just feel your way through torquing bolts. Im not saying you know what 160ftlbs feels like but you know when things in steel or alloy are tight enough
Marco, as a part owner of a 92 year old R-R Phantom owned in the family 55 years , whilst rebuilding the engine' on a budget ' which took me years and learnt so much from a late , old school brilliant engineer like Iain, he explained why the spanners in the tool kit were all of the ' correct ' ( short ! ) length to avoid excessive leverage.The 7/16" cylinder head retaining bolts are many , long and yieldy , and I was terrified at the thought of shearing one which would have been catastrophic but was reassured after this practice was used.2000 miles later, the engine is running beautifully with no problems !.
Wonderfull, watching an engine strip down & rebuild,awe brings back so many memories,as a mechanic in the 1960's,although been in a small two bay garage,& working on mainly ,4 cyl cars, Ford Anglia's Austin's,Mini's ect,then the attachment of starting a rebuild engine,Magic 👍👍👍👍
