  • The Roger Moore Bond movie called 'For Your Eyes Only' features a Lotus Esprit turbo, which Bond drives to Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites. In this video, I take my Esprit there to re-live those classic moments in the film and find out more about this chic Italian ski resort. The full story is in this month's Octane Magazine, which is on sale from Wednesday 27th May.

In 1982 I took my mates to see the movie at the drive-in in my dad’s Peugeot 504, and was excited to see two 504s chasing Bond’s 2CV down the (Greek) mountain. This was just after the white Lotus exploded, so Bond grabbed a lift with the girl.

Hi Harry, My father has a 1981 Esprit s2.2 which he has had since 1982, as the second owner. It was his daily driver and commuting car for over 30 years, now she gets used about every other week. The car has done about 140k miles, and it is a real testament to Lotus engineering. It's never had a restoration, just been lovingly cared for and carefully maintained over the years.
2 years ago, we drove it to classic le mans. I've driven it plenty of times, but never over that kind of distance. The driving was incredible, the handling sublime. The car just ate up the miles, and as driver or passenger it was easy to forget we the car was almost 40 years old! We camped just off site, and covered 1200 miles all in.
I love the Esprit, and it's great to see another one on the road being driven "properly"

Cortina was home away from my home, Venice. As a teenager, I would spend most weekends and some weeks skiing in the most beautiful spot of the Dolomites. As a four years old boy I saw the Winter Olympic games, and I stayed for one month at the Miramonti Grand Hotel with my family. That year I also witnessed the first solar eclipse of my life, seen through primitive smoked shields. At the bob sleight track event, one bob sled went straight over one curve and hit a tree, I believe the driver died. I remember the tree shaking, all its snow falling down the branches from the hit, and the sirens and the red spinning flashlights from the police and fire engines. One winter we rented a large apartment that had a close view of the Olympic trampoline, long after the games, but that piece of beautiful, elegant architecture, still was an iconic part of the landscape. Anyway, thank you for showing this video that brought back so many cherished memories.

My brother and I worked on The Spy Who Loved Me he worked in Special Effects and drove the motorcycle sidecar pod that blew up the bedding truck plus assisted in all the vehicle effects. I was the transport manager for the catering dept. Drove out to Sardinia from Pinewood and helped cater for the chase scenes, flew back to London and ram rodded a 2nd convoy out to Venice for the crossing to Alexandria for the Egyptian scenes.
I have spent 7 years in Egypt working on construction projects, of course the 1st visit was the most fun and having to spend time with Roger Moore, Barbara Bach/Star and Richard Kiel. Even assisted Cubby Broccoli cook a meal for the entire crew in The Valley of the Kings 500 miles down the River Nile.
PS: The vegetable Broccoli is named after Cubby's father or Grandfather.
For Your Eyes Only Ken my brother had the job of preparing the 2 CVs for the Corfu scenes, there were 5 cars in all one kept standard as the Pretty Car. The other 4 had different equipment added, an arrester hook the catch the car on the downward chase through the olive grove. They were fitted with larger 4 cylinder GS engines, roll cages etc. At the premier Ken drove a stunt man and his girlfriend to the cinema and did a hand brake turn and deposited them at the front door.

3:05 it's not the wastegate you hear when changing gears, it's the dump valve
bleeding of pressure in the induction ( intake) compressor side to keep the turbo spinning so it'll spool up quickly when applying throttle again when in next gear and also reducing load/stress on the turbo shaft when the throttle closes (when changing gears).
    Cheers!

    • @ImperrfectStranger
      @ImperrfectStranger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think you'll find that these era Esprit's didn't have dump valves. My (later model) 1989 Chargecooled SE definitely didn't. Some owners fitted aftermarket ones on their cars for the reasons you said.

I know some cars do not have one. I had a Citroën xantia tct and it did not have one.
It probably depends how much boost the engine is designed for and the diameter of the compressor intake. A larger intake daimter will probably bleed of pressure easyer.

I thought Harry was being a baddie, momentarily - doing a Dominic Cummings - but the snow was a bit of a giveaway. Although 'For your eyes only' was made in 1981, the styling of the Lotus Esprit and the Roger Moore connection gives it a 1970s feel - in the best possible way, of course. Harry was doing a pretty good Bond impression too - shaken not stirred.

    Great story thanks.
Pinewood studios was used for rock group rehersals in the 1970s and i was there with a top group not long after the making of the Bond film. Outside the entrance to our studio was a car, covered up, looked intriguing to me so I had to look and it was a Lotus Esprit. Obviously used in the movie and missing engine/gearbox, suspension and mechanicals, but had a chassis, I was very interested to find out more about it and if it was for sale as I was looking for my next hobby project and this was perfect. It was one of three cars used for filming, I was told, one for driving shots, one for under water and this one for interior shots. To my amazement it was for sale and i was asked to make an offer, so did some research only to find that the original gearbox was from a Citroen Maserati. Very dificult for me to find one of those so I didn't make any offer, as much as i would have loved to own that J.B.Esprit.👍🏽👍🏽🇬🇧🇬🇧
