Lamborghini Countach QV update. Extracting the engine & gearbox at Iain Tyrrell Classics

  • My Lamborghini Countach QV is at Iain Tyrrell Classics because the gearbox needs attention and the only way to see what's wrong is to remove both the engine & gearbox from the car. It's a big job and you've never seen an engine hoist as big as this one!

I had the privilege of a few days with a Veyron a couple years back and I find the Chiron far nicer to look at but the Veyron had a similar effect - until I got inside. I think they look a little too pristine and perfectly solid from a distance, especially on film, but in person they have a little more presence. It's the interior that really does it, though, obviously very different to a classic - there's clearly a lot more weight, solidity and structure to everything but the materials, the design and the tactility is genuinely amazing.
But, like the speed, it absolutely doesn't come across without actually sitting inside the things, like how we all know a Tesla is fast but you can't really get the feeling across without driving one.

Harry, since they took the engine out, let them do whatever they have to do to make it work perfectly and you don't have to come back in a couple of months to take the engine out again to change the clutch or some other gasket or tune up the valves. Being the owner of a Countach you should not skimp on maintenance costs. If Iain suggests you do something else while the engine is out, you shouldn't hesitate to do it.

Swabs, clamps please nurse, scalpel.... I found I was holding my breath through that “operation”! It would be really interesting to know what it costs to change a clutch on a Countach. I had the chance to buy a black Countach in New Malden about 35 years ago, not a lot of money either. Having watched this, I think I made the right decision to pass on that opportunity!

I can't believe the engine has to come out for a clutch change at such frequent intervals (depending on your driving habits). A pity the engineers didn't design it so that the engine dropped down considering the overall length as now this whole process has to be repeated in reverse.

I don’t see why keeping an engine and engine compartment clean is only for a garage queen 🤔 especially a classic car like the ones Mr T works on as getting rid of all the grit and grime makes it easier to see where an oil leak is coming for and it’s sooo much nicer to work on a clean car than one covered in 40 year old muck. Although I agree that cars are to be driven, these cars here are also to be looked at in awe and it’s just a bit more satisfying to look at something that’s clean….and looking at Mr T’s video from today I guess he agrees 😏
