Love Harry but.. He took it there for the axial noise but 'wanted to keep the singing noise'. It's clearly the same noise just at higher speed/ revs. Crikey I was wincing.
Ian and Harry sharing the screen. How cool is that. Two of my favorite characters. And, better still, it seems like Harry's first visit to Ian's shop. Neat to hear them go on.
I love these journeys with Tyrrell's Classic Cars workshop. Looking forward to it and hopefully no major issues for you Harry. The drivetrain removal will be epic for sure.
That noise could still be a bearing, I have heard that noise before and it can be a section of bearing shell that has disintegrated, so when you load the gear shafts with throttle the bearing rollers push harder into the the bearing shell and make a noise as they drop into the missing part of the shell.
Yep, I reckon it will be an output shaft bearing. The noise is present in all the gears. I can't understand why Harry ignored it for so long, but I guess he does have a reasonable selection of alternatives.....
Iain's face was a picture. How he restrained himself from shouting at you Harry to stop is a miracle. That sounds really nasty and expensive and I have to say that I would have thought you would have had it investigated a long time before. 1600 miles on fresh oil? They may have topped it up but I doubt it had a full oil change!! Anyway, this will make an excellent series to follow. Regards to you two gentlemen, Cheers, Bob
Watching Iain's face during the test-drive was priceless. :D I'm also loving all the comments saying how the car should have been nursed back to the garage there and then. It's been making that noise for at least TWENTY THOUSAND KM, (maybe miles - I didn't pay that much attention to the units) albeit it less and less quietly, one more hard drive is going to make naff all difference to the outcome. It's going to need a full gearbox rebuild as it already stands. Throwing that amount of grinding paste around is going to abraded if not completely eroded the case hardening on the gearwheels, worn the synchros and any of the rotating interfaces. May as well go for it one last time before overhaul. Harry, this is going to be a great journey to watch. Looking forward to future chapters already.
Hopefully we'll see lots of under the skin footage of the Countach, the spaceframe is amazing. Lots of cool engineering for a car that was basically designed in the seventies.

My belief is that if this was any other car Harry would've had this in way way sooner. But his love for his Countach has put him in a bit of denial over that noise!! Man is a legend.
You two are literally like the David Attenborough of car World. Both of you have so much knowledge and experience that if I'm being honest there's really no other automotive journalist that can even come near your level.
Five words you never want to hear: "Your Countach gearbox sounds bad...." Also, Tyrrell has millions worth of cars in this shop (not to mention a tractor) and there are 2 bicycles near his shop's front door!! Looking forward to this one!
This Countach, is the car, in the color that hung on my wall and will always occupy that space in my heart. Just beautiful! Iain Tyrrell is the exotic whisperer. Couldn't be in better hands obviously. Eagerly awaiting the content that follows.

Italians and gearboxes don't mix. In the 90s I worked in a FIAT garage and at one point was able to almost blindfold a gearbox overhaul. That Harry has been daring for so long to continue driving with that sound, that is having guts.
Harry, have considered PPF'ing the car? I think the cost of respraying the quarter over and over again does outway the cost of PPF. (or maybe omly the parts that are prown to chips?)
Yeah when he says 'Well there's nothing you can do about that' I was thinking, why not PPF at least the lower flares? Double layer it there & you'll reduce 99% of the chips.
I think that, at the moment, the gearbox is of more concern that the paint! There's a good chance that this could become a static-display non-running model...
@@abarratt8869 or it could just get repaired? Why would it be static display? Cost of repair will be expensive but not compared to value of countach these days.
First of all, the beginnings when Harry walks in and gets so distracted by all of the automotive splendor that he gets a bit furled is priceless. Secondly, the way that Tyrrell reassures and calms Harry that he can fix the problem is wonderful - so calm and confident and assured, Tyrrell talks him down. Thirdly, this is the automotive equivalent of waiting too long to go to the dentist...."OMG, I can't believe this........how long has this been this way?......Oy, that's bad........I can fix it!"
I know it's going to hurt your wallet big time, but I am delighted that we're going to see another project with Iain. The two of you are a delight to watch.
As a builder of these exotics, I have no doubt there is a special angel protecting you from both an unscheduled rapid disassembly during that test drive, and Tyrrell's tolerance for abuse.

I had a truck like 12 years ago that had a major part (Carrier bearing) go out while I was in high school, but it went another 50k miles before said critical part finally gave out completely. I was in my early 20s when it finally gave up the ghost. I got used to the whine after a while, but the moment my truck sounded like a jetsons car, I knew it was coming quick.. Just didnt know it would take 6 hours to do it lol. But when it failed, It was a horrible experience. Truck shook like crazy at 55 MPH and wasnt much better at 30 the last 3 miles home.
No kidding I had actually the same noise in my Impreza gearbox a few years ago. Turned out a bronze ring had split, partially mangled as crumbs and this let some gears had excessive axial play. The gears scrubbed together and made this grinding noise.... exactly the same as in your car. Ended up doing a rebuild of the gearbox, but it was needed anyway. I really hope you have the same sort of issue.... fingers crossed !

It’d probably make for a very sought-after film and book in the future when mechanic repairs of such extend and complexity become more and more rare. Plus it’s simply an homage to the outstanding construction and car design.
Yeah, def sub to Iain's channel, so you don't miss out!
Go ahead and do it then B. Willroth ;) we are waiting..
@@epicon6 precisely! He’s not a TH-camr, he just know people are into what he gets up to and we should be fucken greatful.
For a motoring journalist Harry's mechanical naivety is astounding. I'd have turned around again at the gatehouse and pushed it back.
Zero mechanical sympathy! Holy mother of God just stop driving it Harry!
Love Harry but..
He took it there for the axial noise but 'wanted to keep the singing noise'.
It's clearly the same noise just at higher speed/ revs. Crikey I was wincing.
But he sure knows how to create content! Look at all of us talking about it! Just awesome.
@@TheLukanda 👍🤣🤣🤣
@@ElliHarper
Well, what would you do with your super rare, super expensive sports car if the noise carried on getting worse, brains?
Makes a Lambo sound like a Lada. Ian's facial expressions are priceless.
I thought it was the Lambo tractor.
Ian and Harry sharing the screen. How cool is that. Two of my favorite characters. And, better still, it seems like Harry's first visit to Ian's shop. Neat to hear them go on.
That's the first time I've suspected Harry of not having perfect mechanical sympathy. The Saab story kind of put me straight 😄
At least he does prove his point about the countach being quite a solidly built thing!
It is piss poor really. The car deserves the best care and should have had it a few years back.
@@jamesrobert4106 it’s all fixable. His other cars needed attention before this.
@@Lou-f He has done close to 11000 miles with that noise!!!
@@Lou-f if you know you can afford to get the gearbox rebuilt when the time comes it doesn't matter.
"How long has been making that noise?"
"Oh maybe....12,000 miles?"
Harry and Iain both legends. For slightly different reasons haha
My two favourite channels in one! Can't wait to see the journey on this one!
Great video with my two favourite car guys. Looking forward to the updates
How would this explain the very unclean oil fluid? Looked like there is tons of material in it...
@Marcel B.
Yeah that's more than just a bearing, that's a lot of swarf.
Regards to you two gentlemen,
Cheers, Bob
A grimace, if ever I've seen one!
taking a car to ian is one of those places where if you ask how much, you cannot afford it.
Lots of cool engineering for a car that was basically designed in the seventies.
amazing "how they all come with gremlins " italian exotica and such like " a jaguar v12 rebuild was £24 grand "i reckon at least £50 grand this time ?🚗
Funny, I was thinking it all looked a bit homemade!
@@scottnaish-theheartpatient2016 nahh, I think you can get a completely overhauled destroyed box done on them for £25k
My belief is that if this was any other car Harry would've had this in way way sooner. But his love for his Countach has put him in a bit of denial over that noise!! Man is a legend.
Looking forward to following this project…. always a pleasure to listen to Harry & Iain talking cars 👍
A LOVE WATCHING MY TWO FAVORITE AUTOMOTIVE GODS, CRUISING IN A COUNTACH WITH SMILES FROM EAR TO EAR.... FANTASTIC HARRY!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
2022 and Countach still looks phenomenal.
I think it was a Lamborghini tractor so that's okay.
@@barriegibson The first two would be nice....'Your Countach'!
Imagine getting him to service your bicycle!
10s of millions! The 3 Miuras alone are worth ~10M
I love Ian’s mechanical sympathy/dismay here while Harry is very comfortable with the noise as it’s been making it for years.
7:40... Iain is politely trying to say... 'It might be a good idea if you stop and turn around now, before it all goes horribly wrong'!
This Countach, is the car, in the color that hung on my wall and will always occupy that space in my heart. Just beautiful! Iain Tyrrell is the exotic whisperer. Couldn't be in better hands obviously. Eagerly awaiting the content that follows.
Ian’s face when Harry tells him it’s been making that noise for 12 years. 😳😳
I can't believe he has driven it for 12 years sounding like that, maybe if it was a £500 snotter but a Countach?!
😂😂😂
That was funny
They all do that, Sir.
@@TheDoosh79 my £500 snotter gets treated better than Harry's Countach.
Iain is the GOAT. He clearly did NOT want that car to be driving! Very cool to see 2 of my favorite English gentlemen in one video!
Good to edit out the elbow greetings. Young new fans a couple of decades into the future would've thought you were a secret society 😊
I would have heard enough after 200 yards and turned round. Can’t wait to see that engine and gearbox being lifted out, going to be epic.
Good luck with the gearbox rebuild. Never a dull moment at HG. Absolutely love this channel✅👍
Rebuild, or, quite possibly, replacement...
Just love these two together on video talking cars! I can honestly watch it all day long. Can't wait to see the entire series on repairs of his Countach! Gonna be awesome & very informative (as Iain is a savant for Lamborghinis). 👍👍
Surprised you continued to drive it! Iain was clearly expecting to break any moment!
Yep, I was cringing, I was thinking surely Harry is going to take the hint any time soon now, only for Harry to boot it even harder down the road. :) Maybe he should re-name his channel No Hints Harry. :)
(Also shows Ian does not watch Harry's Garage I'm sure that was the car Mrs. Metcalf was wrapping her animal print scarf around the gear shift to deaden the sound on a road trip, a while ago. :)
@@RobG001glad Im not alone! Astonished Harry implied it had always been like that! Bits in the oil might prove preferable to discovering the root cause!
I love watching the gentleman Iain. Your channel introduced me to his channel and I’ve been a big fan ever since. I’m looking forward to this Countach repair footage on hopefully, both your channels. 👍🏻
Thoroughly looking forward to seeing a Countach rebuild with Metcalfe detail! What a treat.
Second month of 2022 and Harry's making up for 2 out of the 3 rebuilds being finished with a Countach engine-out, holy moley.
I can’t wait for this series. Going to be one of my favorites.
Poor Iain! Harry was really testing your nerves, I was gritting my teeth the whole trip! When Harry said 'That's the noise we want to get rid of.' I thought, well keep doing what you're doing Harry the noise will stop soon enough. :D
Poor Ian is just waiting for absolute destruction the entire test drive! 😂 Probably wondering how the hell it's not blown up yet!
I love both of these guys channels watching from Los Angeles. Harry is very lucky to have a master mechanic to work on his cars.
It's going to be interesting to see, when the gearbox casing is removed.
I look forward to that one.
Harry and Iain - my two favourites. I look forward to seeing the engine etc. out.
Oooo... this is going to be interesting! looking forward to seeing that engine, box and diff coming out in one go...
One of my favorite videos of Harry chatting with his mechanic. This had me laughing and cringing at the same time. That poor gearbox. I can’t wait to see the removal video!!
Excellent episode. I want to hop into this restoration journey. I hope all goes well. This car is beautiful.
this Lambo fixing up series will be the most popular on your channel...this car is rock star that transcends all age groups..
It’s moments like this when the ownership of Italian V12s is best experienced vicariously.
British cars are in a league of their own too 🤣
Italians and gearboxes don't mix.
HARRY took his Ferrari to the SAHARA !!!!! so do you think he's going to PPF anything
@@markthoughtswithukrainemas2072 So, if that's the case, especially then he REALLY should.
The look on Ian’s face says it all!
Looking forward to dual episodes on the repairs. The first one I saw was at Mosport . It was so new no one knew what it was! Turned out to be Walter Wolf's car. Saw it some time later in downtown Toronto. The sound bouncing off the buildings was glorious.
Will the GTS score the loudest db meter reading for a 992 on the bit of bumpy road? Countach does still look amazing, early version Gandini hexagonal gauge cluster is amazing.
We all love Harry because he is not precious about his cars. They are made to be driven and used properly.
If that's being happening for 12 years, that is one strong gearbox. They sure don't make them like they used to.
Isn't this the complete opposite of hoovies and the wizard? So understated and very very nice to watch.
Although I would have stopped after a mile.....
Great, we should get to see this on two of the very best Auto sites available.... great scenes of you and Iain whilst driving, a couple of big kids....with serious toys.
*Hi Harry. So sorry that you are having gearbox issues with your Lamborghini Countach. I'm not sure if I'll be able to pay the rent and buy food three months from now, but when I saw this video I put my own selfish worries behind me, and my heart went out to you. Stay strong.*
Great video again Harry, two of our favourite channels… Harry’s garage & Tyrrell’s classic workshop! Brilliant!
Iain: oh that’s a terrible noise Harry (whilst looking at new Patek Phillipe watches on line).
Ain’t gonna be cheap H!
Perhaps Harry can part pay him with his Patek! .)
We are in for a great series with Harry, Iain and a Countach! can hardly contain my self!
Looking forward to this journey Harry 👍
Good video as always
Cant believe how much oil that thing has swimming around in it.
I had a gearbox oil change on my c max taxi ( powershift)
And it took 11 litres 😳😳 according to Evans halshaw ford dealership!!
Only found out as I questioned the 250 pound price for the oil change!
You two gents need to do more vids together. So entertaining, informative and well presented. Best on TH-cam 👍🏻
