It's not complicated; a date is a prearranged going out for entertainment purposes. A date as in some time other than today or right now. Going out as in not staying home. Entertainment as in an activity that is enjoyable. It's been that way since the late 19th century (when people started dating). Intent is not part of the definition; if it was, then one person could be on a date, while the other one might not be!
Having a normal human between these two really puts things into perspective.
