The amount of times when I was doing telephone customer service and we would have IT departments from major companies calling up about the most basic things was astounding. Also the amount of times somebody would be all

Last month I unexpectedly got laid off from my full-time marketing job. It was super shocking and scary and felt like a break-up. But in the last month I have picked up part-time jobs that I love, I have traveled, and I've had more time to reflect on what I really want to do and what brings me happiness. Sometimes that dreaded unemployment is a blessing in disguise.

i got let go from a job on my very first day because i didn't show enough "drive". this was my first of three promised trial shifts at a cafe/deli. i arrived early, chatted to the manager, customers started coming and then she just fucked off somewhere. i had to then assume what i had to do so i had the girl at the front help me learn the coffee machine and waiting tables and such--i was on my feet, working constantly all day, exhausted. i was confused at times and had to stop and consider because i literally had no guidance or tasks given to me by the manager, and i'd never had a job before so i didn't know what to do. i did my best the whole day and didn't have lunch until 5pm cus no one was clear to me when i could have my lunch break--i have autism and so the lack of structure was very confusing for me, and the hectic environment was so overwhelming that i had to cry in a toilet at one point that day. and then the manager sat me down at the end of the day, put on this "ugh this is so inconvenient" face and told me that she apparently saw me 'standing doing nothing' at times (because she gave me no instructions and it was my first day) and that i didn't show enough initiative (aside from the fact that i asked for roles and tasks all day from the other staff) or drive (i repeat, my literal first day of working in my entire life). i was promised at LEAST three trial shifts and was already put onto the rota for the next few months. but apparently being autistic and a bit shy and unsure with no help given meant i wasn't worth employment, and so she paid me for the day and said i shouldn't come back. it severely knocked my confidence for years, and although i earn here and there from art, i've never had a commercial go-to-work kind of job. i forreal will never forgive her for that.

Tomorrow is literally my last day at work. I'm kinda scary and I'm intimated by the whole unemployment paperwork. But I'm also excited. It sounds like you got "laid off" rather than fired? I think they also meant to say "laid off" in the video. Getting "fired" implies it was the employee's fault. It didn't sound like it was Rachel's fault she lost her job, just that the company closed down.

I don't come from a capitalist society so I never understand why somebody should be embarrassed about getting money that they have a right to... You guys need to think critically about the societal constructs that make you internalize classism. You don't need to "live for the weekend" or be ok with not having access to health services or paying for education ffs! You can grow up into great people even without those things. Also, "hard-working" is an aspirational trait that only people from capitalist countries have... Nobody else thinks like that? Westerners are so obsessed with being or not being lazy like honestly you won't get lazy if you stop thinking about it the rest of the world is fine without constantly pushing this "hard-work/laziness" narrative. Think about happiness, kindness, thoughtfulness, acceptance, passion make those things your central value and stop thinking about work as something you have to force yourself to achieve. Trust me, humas are working as long as they are alive it's like being obsessed with breathing, makes no sense.

I was going to get fired from my first “real” job, my dream job. Ostensibly because the department’s leadership changed, but also because I had been at the job for five years and it wasn’t going to grow enough to allow me to grow like I needed to. I was told after a couple months of my new boss subtly throwing me at job connections and interviews that I wouldn’t be kept for much longer, so I had to find something on my own or be let go. It was a really rough year after I left for the first job that would have me, but it turned out to be for the best because less than a year later I found my new dream job. And maybe in another few years I’ll find another new dream job. To be cliched: one door closes and another one opens. Just don’t expect them to move simultaneously.

    • @aliced.3966

Don't worry, not every job experience is one particular job experience. I liked my first job and felt quite good, but I was basically told I sucked (in "polite" passive agressive ways) and most of all I was told that I was always too lunatic, didn't notice things enough. It's taken me quite some time before I took the initiative for other jobs, and literally the one thing that has come out of every single one of my employers since the second job is that I see everything.
So the "it's not you it's us" is quite probably true. It passes, and you see it as no more than as the thing that led you to something better !
Give it time, January's not far behind, it's normal to be shaken up. But you'll find other jobs that'll match super well and that you'll love too, and your confidence will make you even better at it !

I definitely have the same problem that Gaby does with not letting people in authority shit on me. It's a part of my personality that I actually like about myself because some I strongly believe we should be able to fight back and having power doesn't give you the right to be an asshole, but on the other hand that obviously tends to backfire and definitely made my schooling rough and makes me nervous about entering the workforce.

Just got laid off with 25 other people at a job doing what I loved. Web development. After 2 years, this happened like you. Sucks, I’m on unemployment too. I feel like a loser every time I interact with unemployment and have to put in for the next two weeks.
It’s not enough money either, AT ALL.
Life is about money vs. time.
I relate to Rachel where she was like “oh I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.”
I felt that too. It’s a weird mixed feeling thing, cause now you have nothing keeping you down time wise and now you know a next chapter is going to happen some way or another. It’s been a month and a half for me.
Thing is it’s hard to try to sell yourself and gain clients and opportunities. It’s easier to work even if it was a 9-5 like me.
On the downside of 9-5 work, it’s super stable so you kind of stop trying to make things happen elsewhere a lot of the time. You can lose tons of time this way if you’re in a job you only like “so so.” Like most of adult life kinda time. So I’m grateful I was pushed cause I might of done that. Mine was in my field, but I do think my potential wasn’t being used fully. We had a lot of downtime there, hence the lay off. There’s pros and cons.
The rejection isn’t something I missed about seeking opportunity. Most of it is rejection. The interesting part is you don’t know if this amazing opportunity is like happening tomorrow. It’s a cool feeling.
So basically being unemployed, I get a lot of inspiring feelings and feel like I could really build something, but then through the week you are knocked down by some rejection, as well as unemployment treating you like a criminal. I did have a job interview last Friday. I passed 2 previous phone interviews then went in face to face. The building was awesome, such a cool place, the work fits what I’m looking for. The rush from that and doing well is validation and it does make it worth it.
Also, as a millennial I think our generation does it differently. One because a lot of us need to be satisfied in what we do. We see it all around us, people doing what they love to do online so it’s hard to keep us staying in something we hate. Where people in the past may have thought nothing more than average was possible because they didn’t have the internet.
Two is no companies offer retirement anymore if you stay. So, no more is Sally spending 30 years at the front desk.
Sally is moving to company to company finding what she loves to do. It’s not disloyal to do that either as the company will lay you off when you get old now with maybe 1 year salary, then you’re on your own. Those companies aren’t loyal either.
So I feel good that I fit into the world this way, and I don’t see it as a failure but instead a forced step that I needed to make anyway.
I’m sorry this is long and cringey that it takes so much space but I haven’t talked about this really, and this video helped me. Thank you jbu and Rachel.

I know that those are different situations but being from a 3° world country with no parent support, it is really hard to be unemployed... even if you do have all the credentials and diplomas... and you have pets to take care for. I really struggled a few months ago. I was in a good job and later I end up in a bad situation because of a bad boss. So not knowing when to eat or if your pets are not going to eat and if you dont have support from your family, it is stressfull. I am sure some of you can ask your parents but not everyone has that luxury. Be grateful. :)

I go laid off little over a month ago and I tried to get on unemployment figure it out in Alaska. It was the hardest shit ever, they were actually canceling programs a week into me trying to set it up. I clicked one button wrong and I was told I wasn’t going to get an unemployment for a month. so I just gave up and ended up getting some measly job that I’m working now until I can get a good job.

Almost all of my problems stem from working a job that I hate in its entirety and being raised that you “don’t quit one without another lined up.” If I had the balls (and less responsibility.. and fewer animals.. and no rent... and cheaper car insurance and maybe a flip phone and like a $2k head start...) maaaaaan, Id quit my job SO👏🏻 FAST👏🏻!!!😭😭😭

I was an extremely hard working employee but my job let me go because I complained about their infringements on employment standards. I had never had a job that made me feel so not good enough and ruined my self esteem as much as that one did. I wish I left that job when the problems started arising instead of trying to stick it out and then having THEM drop ME? wtaf

I lost work because the company went bust, it's really stressful when you feel like you have no control over the situation. With that said the camaraderie between colleagues became better because it was as if we were on a sinkin ship, so might as well make the most of it until the bitter end. It's tough being unemployed though, my thoughts go out to all those looking for work, it ain't easy x

Got fired for the worst reason a few summers ago from a doggie daycare place. I had been a super reliable worker and always tried my absolute hardest there and they loved that about me. Then one week our clock in/out machine was broken so we had to write down our arrival and departure times on a sticky note until it got fixed. The last shift I worked that week was on the third day of me not getting any sleep in a row (due to insomnia) so my brain wasn't functioning well and I accidentally wrote down that I got in at 7am instead of 8am. Got a call from my manager two days later saying they had to let me go because they couldn't have people there who would lie about when they got in to work (and that was even after I had explained what had happened that had caused me to write that and they had known for months that my insomnia had been especially bad and thus I had been functioning on barely any sleep for a while, so this wasn't new information for them or anything). I just find it crazy that I had a reasonable explanation for it, it was an honest mistake and I apologized profusely for not having been awake enough when writing that down to have realized my mistake and they still fired me without a second thought despite my manager and the owner saying to me THE WEEK BEFORE THIS that I was one of the best, most reliable workers they'd ever had there. Although I was sad to not be able to work with the dogs there anymore, honestly I am glad I got fired because I was able to realize that I didn't want to work for a company that would let go of a reliable, respected worker for one honest mistake that really didn't do any harm to the business. And I realized that I could do much better than that job!

i was fired once over the phone because my coworker threw a full bucket of liquid bleach at me and i reported her to the manager. i've quit a number of jobs for reasons including 1) my manager literally shit on the floor, and 2) my manager pulled a gun on me when i refused to do something illegal. all different jobs i had before i was 21.

I think there are "reasons" why they've done this 3.0 thing. We can only speculate on the whys, and it's not our business. I'm just happy we're still getting this. Whatever this is. I hope they're both happy with their other solo projects and glad they can still work together as well. It's all good. Please don't ruin it by demanding more than they are willing to give. It's not like we're paying for this anyway.

Oh... I only remembered the reason that someone commented hating on those two mediums but I just wanted them to know that more of us loved those.
Of course I'm psyched for their personal projects and a well wisher for their mental health so if these mediums encroach on that I want them to prioritise themselves

I've had two jobs and the one I worked at longer I got fired from. My manager didn't value me as a worker. (I got three hours a week.) But for the sake of fairness, I'm confident I was wrong for that company.

Somebody has probably already said this but unemployment compensation money is Not from the governments money at all. Your employer paid a tax to the state that manages the funds based on your incomes and a tax to the feds that pays for their oversight of each states program, which is also determined by a formula from your wages. it's your money already, whether you ever use it or not. It's like insurance or even a savings account that is a benefit for you from your employer So of course theres no need to feel bad about receiving it as it's your money already and not a handout from the government, in fact the government makes money from it, as it goes in their pot from all employers interest free! They owe you!

My boyfriend has a super cool and well-playing job but it’s kind of on contract, so sometimes he does not have work and has to go on unemployment and I think people don’t think about situations like that. Like the stigma around unemployment is that people are just lazy, but it seems like that’s hardly the case
