Jocko is such a good dude. Without knowing me at all, he cornered me at a jiu-jitsu tournament once. I was competing under a different team but he saw I was there alone. He still says hello every time I see him, asks how things are going, and encourages me to keep training.
As someone who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 3 years ago and having never smoked, watching this leaves me angry and inspired at the same time. Before I was diagnosed I was going to the gym, benching over 220 lb, playing flag football with people half my age, and overall in pretty good shape. Since treatment my fatigue has been off the charts and sometimes I don't even feel like getting out of bed. Radiation to the brain has made it impossible for me to run or ride a bike. The point being, before being diagnosed I always felt like if I just worked hard I would achieve my goals. I know now, that is not true, but know this. Resilience is not bouncing back to what you were, it's bouncing back and being okay with things as they are. Point is you can't always control what happens to you, but you can *always* control how you react to it. So find what makes you happy and do it. No excuses! Thanks to Joe and Jocko for reminding me to stop being a pussy and get on with it. #rockoutwithyoursocksout

Hey Joe you are so right. i'm 52 yrs old. Long story short. Been doing the Jujitsu thing for 3 months now. Diet is strict. Down 25lbs resting heart rate 59-60. No more blood pressue meds. 5 days a week brother sharpening the sword. thank you for the inspiration.

Joe, I listen to your podcast regularly and this particular one has stirred up change. I'm 32 years old and have been on dialysis since I was 17. I had a transplant from 21-28, but have been on hemo dialysis since 2012. Because of this I have watched my body deteriorate to the point where I struggle heavily to walk upstairs, or anything physical. I don't want to blame dialysis 100%, I have strayed away from putting my body through any physical strain, because of the pain. I live with pain, so I didn't want to put extra on myself, by me doing that I've went from 5'7 190 pounds to 155 pounds. I have no muscles at all, my 5'2 120 pd wife could probably beat me up. My wife and I had to do IVF to conceive a baby and thankfully she's pregnant. So, as I'm sitting in my office Monday listening to this podcast something clicked, I need to stop listening to that bitch inside of me, I have been stressed about the how am I going to walk with, hold, play with my child if I cannot take care for myself. So, Monday the first time in 7 years I joined a gym, and have gone four times this week. I want to thank you and Jocko, for just calling people on there bullshit. We all have struggles and from here on out I'm not going to let my disability define me. Thank you for your podcast, my wife and future child thanks you as well.

hope this story is true, really inspiring if it is.really rare in my life i saw aperson get out of depression by listening to some advice.Edit:gramma correction
It's Joe's aura of charisma and the sense of a supportive community he built, not just advice. Of course someone has to be ready and willing to take the responsibility to just change those little things that add up getting out of that hole.
I think the biggest thing for me is how even though he has all these accomplishments and seems like he's larger than life, you look at him and his personality during these podcasts and he's just a regular dude. I get to thinking this is a guy that worked his way up from nothing and the way he is now is a result of all his work. Not saying that I'm thinking I can be famous and rich, but what I'm going through is gonna pass. Only thing is it won't go away on its own I have to work for it.
afoninja121 brother, Life is Suffering... there is no way around it, there is no way to avoid it, we all at some point feel like this life is not worth it. To be in a place and a living situation, even a job you didn't want to do or you hate it, or when something horrible happens to you or one of yours, soo many times you will feel helpless and there is no way out. What has worked for me through my life has been the same as for many others. I make it a point to challenge myself each day with some form or physical activity, take myself into a real physical struggle. I stopped watching regular TV, I feel like it is all poison for your mind. I pick a goal or a book or an experience I would like to have and I go after it with all I got. In other words, as Jordan Peterson said, it is your responsibility to give your life Meaning because it is only through a meaningful life that all that suffering is bearable. Never give up, keep fighting, no matter how bad it is and how much it hurts. God bless.
me: "into what? and where?" truth lord: "dude you don't even know, hopefully you find the light soon man" me: "what?, i mean like where exactly is your evidence coming from?" truth lord: "i'm done with you man you aren't ready for the truth, peace."
a little over a year ago I was a suicidal heroin addict. A pain pill addiction from a replaced shoulder while in the military snowballed into a full blown heroin addiction. Death seemed better than the feeling of withdrawals! I wanted to die. I was fed up. So I headed to the doctor and asked for help. After the detox I got heavily into diet and exercise and now a little over a year later I am back! My health is damn near perfect both physically and mentally! I had to re-wire myself and man did it pay off! I eat well, train hard, and am in bed early so I can be up early! Life is great and I'm happy to live each and every day! My advice to anyone battling demons is DON'T BE TOO PROUD TO ASK FOR HELP! Ask anyone...don't bottle it up because that can kill you!
Jason Peeps Good job, spot on about re wiring. Exercise is the key to life that's for sure. Glad you got clean :) , Ive known to many people who've od.
after about a month I started noticing how much better life is without opioids/heroin. a month sounds like a long time but compared to the 25+ years of drug and alcohol addiction it pales in comparison. it all boils down to good ol fashioned discipline. just know this man...it gets easier and you WILL feel so much better once you're out of that opiate haze! you could also give suboxone a try. 2 of my friends went that route and are having sober fitness fun with me almost every weekend! just remember, you're gonna want to have a plan for coming off the suboxone as it can be addicting as well. but you wont be in that opiate haze and can function like a normal sober human! good luck man...hopefully you have a bit of a support system with ya...I tackled it alone and that made for a tougher road! but most junkies manage to fuck over all their friends before rock bottom hits haha
well, the camera adds 10 pounds, and they use a 3 camera set-up, 2 on Matt. So, 20 lbs extra? Not enough for all that jacking in pic. hats off to the Seals.

nah those endless discussions about MMA are boring Better would be to have Jocko fight in the UFC as a kind of cameo fight. And if he whoops ass, make him a regular contract fighter.
This was the first podcast I've heard. I have a long commute to work every day ,and was thinking about downloading audio books to help pass the time . TH-cam suggested that I watch this podcast, so I did this morning and evening. I've been aware of Joe's existence for quite some time My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed watching fear factor and listening to Joe's commentary during ufc fights. My first sighting of jocko, was on a video of him explaining why he gets up so early, and the benefits of doing so. This podcast contains two successful guys, who have a great outlook on life. Not only was I entertained by the content but I felt uplifted by their stories and highly positive attitudes. Many of the topics of their discussion rang out to me. I had a discussion today with a coworker about how I changed my life when I was 25. I served in the army in the early 2000's, got out, tried college (hated it) worked in a warehouse ,when I found out I was going to be a dad (at 24) ,went to night school for a year and a half, three nights a week four hours a night, started my electrical apprenticeship (4 years worth) took my journeyman electricians test and passed. I could've easily stayed in that warehouse, but I made the choice to better myself and to provide a better life for my family ( now 3 kids) it sucked working 8 hours then going to school at night, but it payed off . Joe , you rock! Jocko, you have a new fan ! I'll be checking out more of both of your podcasts!!! I couldn't ask for two better guys to get me into the world of podcasts! Also as a suggestion for a future podcast...... joe , jocko and Dwayne johnson. Three successful, motivated, genuine guys who are extremely positive! It would be epic. SUBSCRIBED!
41:50 I just picture it like the game Fallout, and we're sitting here listening to random recordings from the old days, and we discover a vault of JRE episodes and get to listen to this again at that time... "Good old Jocko... went out fighting the machines" lol
Let me start by saying, I'm sure that out of all your subscribers you get many messages like this, but I just NEED to say your podcast has been a contributed to a major change in my life; due to the sheer amount of experience and inspiration you bring to your audience. I've been in a very dark place in my life for a while. Yet, i listen to your videos and the insight it brings to my life keeps me going. anyways. thanks dude. here's to meeting my idol someday *thumbs up* *

I love the fact that Jocko is modest about his intellect while being someone capable of the level of social commentary about modern american society in this interview.
10:25 willpower is complex. There are multiple “models” of willpower in research. One of them is how HRV (heart rate variability) is a physiological measure of willpower and is improved by exercise. How to increase willpower: 1. Meditate 2. Exercise 3. Eat clean 4. Sleep well 5. Don’t judge yourself 6. Save decision making 7. Be yourself/don’t pretend to be something else. 8. Willpower is like a muscle.

BJJ Fiend seems inconsequential when its the entire earth that needs a good clean. And having a clean domain doesnt make you an empathetic, compassionate person, as evidenced by J. Peterson. You should have a clean home, simply because is gross not to, but to pretend that it has any baring on the other aspects of you life or the world at large is just moronic. I work with surgeons that save lives all week and get shit faced and party their asses off on their days off. JP is just trying to discredit the youths that despise him with that 'clean room' bullshit. Their cars arent even clean.

Doing a lot better since and my anxiety attacks happen much more rarely now.
Sky's the limit, now. Congratulations.
Tweeting your comment link @ Joe in the hopes it helps him notice it. He saved my life, too
hope this story is true, really inspiring if it is.really rare in my life i saw aperson get out of depression by listening to some advice.Edit:gramma correction
God bless.

a little over a year ago I was a suicidal heroin addict.
Glad you got clean :) , Ive known to many people who've od.
thanks man! and same here...way too many funerals for sure!
after about a month I started noticing how much better life is without opioids/heroin. a month sounds like a long time but compared to the 25+ years of drug and alcohol addiction it pales in comparison. it all boils down to good ol fashioned discipline. just know this man...it gets easier and you WILL feel so much better once you're out of that opiate haze! you could also give suboxone a try. 2 of my friends went that route and are having sober fitness fun with me almost every weekend! just remember, you're gonna want to have a plan for coming off the suboxone as it can be addicting as well. but you wont be in that opiate haze and can function like a normal sober human! good luck man...hopefully you have a bit of a support system with ya...I tackled it alone and that made for a tougher road! but most junkies manage to fuck over all their friends before rock bottom hits haha
also, buy yourself some GABA...I used it to help with sleep because getting through the nights was the toughest!
Jason Peeps thats awesome brother, keep it up, keep reaching up higher
I just finished his book, Extreme Ownership. It's a must read.
Definitely follow up with Dichotomy of leadership. Amazing book.

Is it just me, or does Matt Damon look jacked in this podcast?
CAN'T UNSEE!
well, the camera adds 10 pounds, and they use a 3 camera set-up, 2 on Matt. So, 20 lbs extra? Not enough for all that jacking in pic. hats off to the Seals.
Jo Po That's Matt Damon????
Yes it is. Not a lot of people know this but the name 'Matt Damon' is not his actual name, it's just an alias used in hollywood.

For me no ads is so clutch! When other podcasters start advertising it throws a wrench into the conversation. I understand that people need to make money so maybe other podcasters should do their thing before or after the podcast is over.
Would pay to see an interaction between Mr. Jocko and Joey Diaz.

10:25 willpower is complex.
There are multiple “models” of willpower in research.
One of them is how HRV (heart rate variability) is a physiological measure of willpower and is improved by exercise.
How to increase willpower:
1. Meditate
2. Exercise
3. Eat clean
4. Sleep well
5. Don’t judge yourself
6. Save decision making
7. Be yourself/don’t pretend to be something else.
8. Willpower is like a muscle.
