    This is a front wheel drive drift in Assetto Corsa. Many people say you can't drift FWD cars, or that you simple shouldn't. But, in this Assetto Corsa Touge Tutorial video I'm going to be showing you exactly how to do it, and when it's useful.
    In my opinion, drifting an FF Car effectively is even harder than drifting rear wheel drive. Not only does it take a bit of practice and a lot of bravery to pull it out of the bag in a run. But, a driver needs to have a solid understanding of the theory behind driving an FF car in a performance manner.
    For instance in a real wheel drive car, you are being pushed from behind around a corner. If you break traction on the rears, they will still spin whilst in oversteer and push you around the corner in a drift. But, in a FWD car, the oppositeis happening. You are being pulled around a corner. Since the application of power is pulling the car forward, as soon as you break traction on the rear, the rear tyres will naturally fall into line with the fronts after steppingon the throttle. This makes it impossible to gain momentum in a drift like a RWD car does.
    So, now you're probably wondering - in what world is a front wheel drive drift useful if all you do is slow down while performing it? Well, let me tell you.
    Front wheel drive cars tend to have a lot of understeer because the front wheels handle both the accelration and steering, increasing the traction load on the tyres. Therefore, under heavy load, such as in a long, fast corner, or tight corners such as hairpins, understeer is almost guaranteed to happen at some point.
    TO get the grip back on an understeering vehicle, the demands on the tyre tread needs to be reduced. That means using less steering angle, and trimming off speed. Inexperienced drivers will often panic and slam on the brakes This keeps
    the tyres from regaining grip, making the understeer even worse.
    So, to get around a corner without losing time, we must initiate a FF drift. Understeer is likely
    to occur at either the entry or exit to a corner, and this is where you should initiate the FWD
    drift, to minimalise the understeer which will lose you time either through letting off the throttle or decreasingthe steering input. By drifting at either the entry or exit of a corner you won't need to steer much any more and
    minimalizing the chance of understeer.
    If you've watched any of my videos in the how to touge series, youll know that a lot of methods are reused, and the front wheel drivedrift is no different. There are 3 main methods we can use to induce a front wheel drive drift. But, as always, it's what you do
    after the drift initiation that counts. So, you can really use any drift initiation method. But, these are some of my favourites
    to use in a ff car. These methods will help you reduce understeer, as you will be able to line your car up to the exit of a corner much earlier. Meaning, you won't need to steer and throttle at the same time whihc will reducethe chance of understeer greatly.

      Not sure if trolling or just ignorant...
      You're drawing a distinction between powersliding and drifting, but powersliding is drifting. And then what you are describing as "convention drifting" is powersliding. Powersliding is using power to break traction and propel the car through a slide/drift. Drifting is simply any time your rear wheels slide in a controlled fashion to create oversteer. There are lots of different ways to initiate a drift, regardless of drive wheels. To think of one style as "correct" or "convention" is close-minded and wrong. Different cars + turns need different methods of approach. To say fwd cannot drift is uninformed, and to say the only way they can even attempt a drift is to powerslide is even more uninformed.

    so thanks again for providing a tutorial indepth enough that it could be used irl

  • @TSRB
    @TSRB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    There seems to be some confusion about the difference between what a drift and powerslide is;
    "Essentially, a drift starts before the apex, while a powerslide starts after the apex. With a powerslide, you keep things tidy up until you hit the apex. Once there, you put the power down-which, in a rear-drive car with good power, can make the back end step out to varying degrees. In a drift, the slide starts much earlier. Your goal is to induce oversteer going into the corner, not on your way out-sometimes using a clutch kick or a tug on the handbrake to get the car sideways ahead of the apex. Any time you're oversteering before the apex, it's a drift.
    So now you know. And next time one of your friends incorrectly calls a powerslide a drift, or vice versa, you'll be able to point out exactly how wrong they are."

      Try it out on a low grip surface like gravel or grass first. You should be able to initiate it at slower speeds (like 40- 50kph).

    Something not spoken of that could affect FWD handling, especially turn-in and understeer, is selecting/adjusting for parallel steering or anti-ackermann instead of the typical Ackermann steering arrangement. Also, if your rear end toes OUT on compression and IN on droop, then braking and lift-off will be more stable, but once you start the weight transfer and load up the side opposite to your turning direction, you'll essentially have rear-steer. I'm not saying this is ideal or that you SHOULD do this, but it's kinematically what WOULD happen if you had toe IN on droop and toe OUT on compression in the rear. Play with it, if you can.

    In low grip scenarios drifting is a LOT faster in fwd cars, pointing it towards the exit allows you to get on the power way earlier and it's a lot less awkward trying to balance acceleration and steering.

    In assoluto racing, i do a simmiliar techinique when entering corners, tho I release the gas pedal as I continue on the corner, occasionally pressing the gas pedal gently while maintaining the powerslide. It's a bit fun but it's hard when I'm doing it in the touge map because I do not have enough speed to do the weight transition mainly because the gap between two corners isn't big enough for me to accelerate my 321 hp civic. I already used short gearing on my EK9 to reduce the acceleration time but it barely does a difference, so i just use the handbrake to cut off the understeer, just like master shinggo does.

    Hey sim racing bloke, is it faster to have some skinny ass tires on the back of an FF? in my mind they arent doing much and the skinnier they are the more power you can have while still doing somewhat of a slip angle, treating it almost like a wierd AWD.
