Soul Food Movie Description:
Matriarch Mama Joe has held her family together for 40 years around a Sunday dinner of soul food. When diabetes hospitalizes her, the dinners stop and tensions among her three daughters start to break the family apart. Two of the sisters feud continuously: Teri is jealous of Maxine's marriage and irritated that everyone assumes her corporate salary is open to the rest of the family's uses. Thank you for this reaction. Rewatching this movie as an adult i’ve come to the realization that the family treated Terri like garbage. They used & abused her. The movie made Terri look like the villain because of her standoffish demeanor. The reason why she was negative Nancy was because Max stole her boyfriend & married him, the family made her pay for everything & her marriage was on the rocks. Max was a lowkey bum. Bird was probably still messing around with Simuel because she didn’t set any boundaries & she went behind her husband’s back to Simuel to get him a job. Fun fact: The late Whitney Houston & Halle Berry were considered for the role of Terri.
I ain’t gonna lie, if I heard my family fighting over my comatose body; I’d definitely pop up to tell them to chill tf out 😂

I’m not sure if you would be interested but they actually turned Soul Food into a tv show in the early 2000’s. It has different actors playing the characters but season 1 of Soul Food pretty much follows the same beat as the movie. The characters would then grow into their own in later seasons. All the episodes are available for free on TH-cam.

It was interesting watching this reaction. I felt this way the first time I watched this as a child. I viewed Teri and her relationship in the same way as well. But you live a few more years and revisit the movie with older eyes and its crazy the new way I saw each character. #TeamTeri but more importantly #teamtherapy 😂

Terri is both a victim and villain, she was snooty, and threw alot of things in ppl face cause she was the most stable but she was also a victim cause in turn of being the most stable the family put a lot of responsibilities on her….my real villain is Bird 😭 she was outta pocket a lot in this movie
I think some of it was a defense mechanism. It was clear their mom favored Maxine. I got the feeling that growing the family made fun of Terri for being more into school than boyfriends. I do think she did see herself as superior but only because she needed to make herself feel worthy in some way. You are definitely right that they expected her to do a lot and then were angry when she no longer wanted to.
